CHARLES OWUSU-BROBBEY, from south London, achieved one A* in maths and three As in physics, chemistry and further maths in his Alevels. The 18-year-old is due to start his engineering degree at Lady Margaret College, University of Oxford. Charles said: “It’s nice to know that you’re not alone. I didn’t know
anyone here and it’s nice to see that there are others striving for the same thing. “[Black students] get branded sometimes for the wrong reasons, but it’s great to see there are people here who are top of the class or even the top of the country, to be honest. It’s such a nice feeling to know that we are part of it.

UK rapper Paigey Cakey talks to YV’s Hazelann Williams about squashing her beef with Lady Leshurr, dusting off haters and embracing her alter ego
T
HERE HAVE been many Twitter beefs over the years. Some have kept us entertained, others have left us shaking our heads in dismay, and let’s be honest, some have been downright foolish. However, one beef on the social network site was particularly sad because it ended the friendship of two of the UK’s hottest female rappers. Back in July, UK rapper Paigey Cakey and fellow rapstress Lady Leshurr had a very public spat after Paigey Cakey announced the end of their friendship without explanation. The ending of a union between the two much-loved MCs left their respective fans upset and confused. But thankfully, the two have finally recon-
ciled and will be back in the studio together very soon. “After we fell out, we never deleted each other’s numbers and it got to a point where we sat down and spoke about our differences, the 20-year-old revealed. “It was silly because we are best friends, but we just fell out. We are going to start working on some more projects together. Leshurr recently produced one of my new songs, she added. As a result of the beef and the subsequent Twitter furore, the rapper, real name Paige Meade, is keen to brush off naysayers and haters for good in new track Same Way, taken from her brand new EP, The Next Paige. “I recorded the song a year ago. It’s a trap kind of tune
addressing my haters, she said. “I’m talking about brushing them off. That relates to when people say silly or petty comments about you, you’ve just got to brush them off. Even though there might be three or four haters out there who want to say negative things about Paigey Cakey, there are thousands of people who like and support what I do and everyone can relate to that. It’s a positive song. In the video for Same Way, the pretty rapper is as confident and outgoing as ever, but is surprisingly shy and reserved during our interview. “Paige is a humble person, she begins. “I can be shy at times. I don’t like to talk unnecessarily. If someone’s talking to me, I’ll talk back, but I kind of
keep myself to myself. Paigey Cakey is different. She’s full of energy, she’s confident, she’s just like fire, especially when she’s on stage. She’s definitely my alter ego. It’s like a different part of me, she’s like the opposite of Paige. Everything Paige doesn’t have, Paigey Cakey does.â€? Releasing her new EP through UK record label Always Recording, the rapstress is hoping to reveal a new side of her alter ego, much like US star BeyoncĂŠ and her on-stage moniker Sasha Fierce. “The Next Paige is a follow-on from my first mixtape which came out last year December, The First Paige. On that mixtape I was kind of finding my sound, finding my path and what I wanted to do. With The Next Paige, I know what I want to do and it sounds quite trap, hip-hop, drum and bass all mixed together and it has a lot more singing on it.â€? Oh yes, the petite star can also hold a note. She laughs. “Not a lot of people know that I was a singer before I started rapping, so I kind of put everything on there. I want people to find out about the real Paigey Cakey.â€? And her entertainment CV just keeps on growing, having previously turned her hand to acting. During her musical hiatus, Paigey completed a successful stint as Jade Fleming in
the BBC drama Waterloo Road. Although her time on the show came to an end last year, the star has more roles lined up and will feature in a new Noel Clarke film due to be released early next year, although she remains tight-lipped on her role and the film as a whole. Even when pushed. While she is fluent in both disciplines, Paigey Cakey admits she finds it more difficult to act “as it’s not as consistent as rapping. “The music is something I can do consistently every day, acting is not as consistent. When a job comes my way, I can take the job, but for now I’m focused more on the music and I’ve got a straight path with that, but I would like to do both, like Queen Latifah.

Though she’s been blessed with talents in disciplines that would make a lacklustre Britain’s Got Talent contestant green with envy, Paigey was considering a career in athletics or sports teacher before landing fame. “I was really passionate about sports in school, she reflects. “I won so many medals and trophies for running cross country. I came second out of a thousand girls in a five-mile run. I am now a roller skater, Any time I get, I am out with my red roller skates, and ice skating too. That’s the only kind of sport I do now. Same Way is out now through Always Recording. For more information follow @Paigey_Cakey on Twitter

Dear Kat, I know my girlfriend has been cheating on me, but when I ask her if she’s bored of our relationship she’ll tell me she’s happier than she’s ever been. I found out from trusted sources that she’s been seeing some guy behind my back, but I have no solid proof. I don’t want to accuse her only for her to flip the switch on me, which she does very well. To be honest, I can’t stand to look at her anymore. I know she can feel me drifting, but it just makes her clingier. I don’t know what to do. Anon, London

Hi Anon, It’s obvious she doesn’t intend on coming clean any time soon, so why prolong your agony? Ask her straight up! Tell her you’ve heard from credible sources that she has been unfaithful and you need her to be honest as it’s playing on your mind. Be aware of your tone and ensure that when you ask the question, it’s just that. You’re not accusing her; you’re trying to get to the bottom of the truth. Be open and willing to hear her out, even if you do believe the word of your sources. You may find out something that may change your mind. Listen, you obviously care very much for your girlfriend or you would not have taken the time out to send me this letter. All the best.
