YV’s straight-talking agony uncle answers your problems

Dear Kat

My dad won’t let me go on holiday with my friends to Ibiza in August. I am 17, but I’m not a wild girl who does dumb things, I just think he’s being a control freak. I am paying for the ticket and my hotel and haven’t even asked him for spending money. I am hoping he changes his mind but I need a back up plan asap! HELP, Chelsea, 17, Luton

Hi Chelsea

Firstly, I think you should try and understand why your dad does not want you to go before you make a ‘back up plan’. If you have a discussion into why the holiday is important to you and he still does not listen then my advice would be to sit this one out. It sounds like he may think you are too young to go on a holiday alone and he may be right. You won’t be able to drink or go to clubs anyway (yes they check ID) so it would make sense to consider waiting until next summer. Let me know what you decide to do. K@

achieved 15 top 20 hits in the UK, and have sold over 10 million records worldwide. The group released their debut album, Always & Forever in 1993. In 2010 she featured on an Alicia Keys track Speechless. She started working on a new album in 2007, but ran into a series of delays. It is set for release this year. 14. STILL ON THE WESTSIDE?: US R’n’B star TQ is best known for his hit song Westside, which became a top 40 hit in several countries in 1998. Q released his latest album, Kind of Blue in 2010. 15. STUDENT OF THE WEEK Rosina St James FOR THE past few years, the 21-year-old London School Of Economics African and Caribbean Society president has spent much of her spare time mentoring young Londoners, including a prison inmate currently serving a six-year sentence. Rosina telephones her mentee once a week and is one of only a handful of people who visits him regularly. “I am determined to use my freedom to prevent others losing theirs over and over again.” Rosina is the current vice chair of the British Youth Council, overseeing the needs of over 200 member organisations including UNICEF UK, The Prince’s Trust and all the regional Youth Councils across the country. Her passion for politics has earned her an appearance on

BBC Breakfast, where she was invited to discuss the findings of a report compiled in partnership with the Department for Health on the visibility of nurses in schools. 2012 has also seen Rosina participate in a BBC Radio 4 debate alongside former Conservative cabinet minister Ann Widdecombe, where she discussed the barriers faced by women pursuing careers in politics. In May 2012, Rosina travelled to Mexico to act as a UK representative at Y20, the youth equivalent of the G20 summit. “I always ask myself: how can I apply what I’m learning? How can I use it to make a difference?” • Rare rising stars 2012

The UK singer tells YV’s Akilah Russell why music is the only love in his life right now “

I wouldn’t say that I feel like a heartthrob

I

T CAN’T be easy being a heartthrob, but rising star Angel has decided that his music is the only love he needs in his life right now. While thousands of his female fans, who affectionately call themselves his ‘Angelites’, will be glad to know that the only person their beloved is dating right now is the studio, I could not help but wonder if the modest singer is secretly enjoying all the attention that comes with fame. I was even more curious to find out if his newly found status as a sex symbol has actually registered with him yet. After an embarrassed laugh, he jokes: “I wouldn’t say that I feel like a heartthrob, I just feel like I play my position when I appear!” “One girl did tell me that she’d take a bullet for me and that was kind of crazy,” he says after I relentlessly pursue the heartthrob line of questioning. “But there are loads of sweet things, cute things, I’d be a fool to get into them but use your imagination,” he adds. Putting a swift end to my shameless investigation into his love life, he promises that he really is single

– Angelites there is hope! “I don’t have a girlfriend. I do have girls as friends but not one person that I am holding down right now. I am young, free and single and ready to mingle!” “He adds: “No I’m joking, honestly I am going out with my music right now. Music is my wife, I am dating that studio!” There is no doubt that the 24-year-old’s romance with music is one that is going well, as his latest single Wonderful has taken the internet by storm raking up over half a million views just a few days after its release. However, with over 15 years of performing under his belt it is no wonder the Island Records signing feels like his success has been ‘a long time coming’. “I am just happy that people are finally getting to recognise who Angel is. I did not necessarily feel like I wasn’t getting the love I deserved before, I just feel like it was just a matter of time, so when I say ‘finally’ it just means that I have the chance to show the world what I can do now,” he explains. Adopting a more serious tone he adds: “Please get this down. The one thing I want the world to know is that tunes like Ride Out, Gleaming and my

new song, How Can I Lose?

are songs that I have written and physically produced with the hands that God gave me. “I need to get that across because I went out the other day - and this is not the first time this has happened - but some guy came up to me and was like ‘your camp is bad [good] and your producers are sick’ and I was like, ‘oh my God all the things you’ve heard I have produced myself.’ It kind of gets me a bit mad because I do this. This [music] is what I do and I need people to know that.” Admitting that being ‘misunderstood’ has been a theme in his career, he tells me that from now on he is going to start filming when he is in the studio to show to fans and critics once and for all that he ‘actually does this’. • Wonderful is out now through Island Records www.thisisan-
