Director
The Pearl Chamber of Commerce is very proud of the city of Pearl and we take every
opportunity we get to promote our wonderful city. Our hometown atmosphere is centered on family, church, school and sports. We proudly fly our flags and respect our veterans as well as all those serving in the greatest military in the world. Our devoted volunteers and civic groups are among the hardest working and most loyal people in the South—always striving to make a difference in the lives of others.
The business climate in the city of Pearl is booming with all of the smaller locally owned
businesses serving as the backbone of our vibrant community. Pearl is also blessed to have a wonderful collection of large national chains and many well known locally owned retailers.
The chamber is a wealth of information on all of the many events, activities and business-
related issues in the city. We invite you to stop by and let us tell you all of the many reasons that the city of Pearl is a great place to shop, own a business, live, and play! Sincerely,
Executive Director Pearl Chamber of Commerce

Officials Pearl is home to a catalog of interesting citizens. The city is especially proud of those who help make governing laws on the local, state, and national level. Gregg Harper is currently serving his 4th term in the U.S. House of Representatives after having been elected to Congress in 2008. His home is in Pearl with his wife Sidney and their two children, Livingston and Maggie. Prior to his service in Congress, Congressman Harper practiced law for 27 years and served as the prosecuting attorney for the cities of Brandon and Richland. Both he and Sidney are graduates of Mississippi College. In Congressman Harper’s work as a representative, he is committed to advocating conservative values in the challenges facing America. Senator Dean Kirby is another elected Republican official from Pearl representing District 30 since 1992. He is a member of nine committees and is the sponsor of 640 bills. His professional experience includes owning Dean Kirby Insurance Agency since 1979. Kirby and his wife, Jean, have three children. Representative Ray Rogers is also a native of Pearl and his alma mater, Pearl High School, named their stadium, after him. He owns an advertising company and is a former justice of the peace. Rogers was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1983 and has served District 61 since 1984. He is married to Shirley Greer and has three children. At 84 years of age, Rogers continues to serve his constituents and be a strong voice for our citizens. Thanks to these three honorable officials, Pearl has a strong voice in the government realm.

of the Year. The district is currently considered among the top performing districts in the state with a “B” accountability rating and is widely recognized for having top-ranked athletic, fine arts, and extra-curricular programs. A factor that has contributed significantly to the success of the school district is the symbiotic relationship it has with the community. Pearl citizens have long viewed the schools as the lifeline of the community. From serving as mentors and school adopters to belonging to numerous auxiliary groups, parents and other community members exhibit Pirate Pride. Students and staff annually participate in a number of community service projects including the Mississippi Food Network Food for Families Competition, Tackle A Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, and the Mississippi Blood Services Blood Drive, just to name a few. In 2007, the district embarked upon a strategic planning process that resulted in the development of the district’s mission statement. The mission of Pearl Public School District is to prepare each student to become a lifelong learner, achieve individual goals, and positively impact a global society.

Fire Chief Carl Kibby
How long have you been with the Pearl Fire Department?
What are your favorite places to eat in Rankin County?
I have been with the Pearl Fire Department 27 years. I live in Pearl with my wife of 27 years, Tami Kibby.
Well, there are a ton of good restaurants in Rankin County, so that’s hard to say. However, I’m a big cook and I really love to make big meals in the kitchen and on the grill for folks. So I’d probably just say eating at home.
Tell us a little bit about your family. I have two daughters, Jessica and Kaleigh, and one wonderful grandson, Kaidan. Let me be the first to tell you, there’s nothing like a grandbaby.
Did you always know you wanted to be a fireman? If not, what drew you to the profession? I always knew I wanted to be a fireman. As a matter of fact, my mother would tell me that every time a fire truck passed by, even as a toddler, I’d rush to the window to watch it. While I was a senior in high school in Indiana, I was in night school to become an EMT. Once I moved to Pearl, I enrolled in paramedic school. I became a reserve fireman in 1988, and in May of 1990 I was hired full time.
Do you hold any special certifications? Also, what is a goal you have for the Pearl Fire Department?
What’s a favorite childhood memory? I had a really wonderful mother. She was so compassionate and caring, more than anyone I’ve seen. She instilled in my brother and me, at an early age, a genuine love for people. She always told me to never make a judgment but instead make a friendship. I have so many memories of her just going out of her way all the time to help people.
What’s the biggest mistake young people make today? One of the biggest mistakes by today’s youth is making decisions on the fly. Young people need to research and think about everything they do before they do it. I don’t believe in YOLO (you only live once) because it’s important to think about your actions and the consequences they may have in the short-term and long-term. I don’t think social media helps either; I’m not a proponent of Facebook or anything of that sort. Once you say or do something, it’s hard to take it back. So think about it before you do either.
Yes, I hold a lot of certifications. Actually, you name it and I probably have it. I am a SWAT medic, law enforcement certified, a certified rescue diver, and a hazards material technician, etc. My belief was always that I needed to lead by example. I can’t ask my guys to get something I don’t have. Something I’m passionate about is EMS because 80% of calls we make in this city are medical emergencies. In 6 years, our fire department has graduated 11 paramedics. By next year, we expect to have 16-18 paramedics. I always had the goal of having at least one fireman that graduated as a paramedic on each of our trucks to increase efficiency and better help our citizens.
What’s your favorite pastime?
What’s one of your favorite things about Rankin County?
If you love your job like we do, there’s stress for sure but it’s eased. There’s not a day I come in that I hate my job. It’s never been like that. However, I would say that the biggest stress is balancing your family and your schedule with this type of job. I also think it’s important to learn early on to not take what you see home. For example, I had to learn to still let my kids be kids and do things despite the things I saw happen to kids in the field.
I really love the people. I’ve never lived in a place where people enjoy helping other people in their community as much as the folks in Rankin County do. I love living here. Plus, we have great school systems, great businesses, and great political representation. It’s booming.
My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my family. I also like to be active in my church, Drakes United Methodist, and to go running and deer hunting.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? In 10 years I will be enjoying more quality time with family, a little time off, and more time outdoors. I just hope the good Lord grants me 10 more years.
What’s the most stressful part of your job?

Police Chief Tim Sarrett
How long have you been with the Pearl police department?
Share some things that you enjoy in your spare time.
28 years
Golf, karaoke, watching sports, spending time with my grandson Parker and friends and family.
Why did you decide to become a policeman?
Tell us about your family.
Since I was a small child, I loved playing cops and robbers (I never wanted to be the robber). I truly believe it was a calling from God for me to be a policeman. My mother named me Timothy from the Bible. The bible verse, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” This verse has always stuck with me over the years, that God had a plan for me, which leads me to this bible verse: “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:12
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?
What is the toughest thing you have experienced as a policeman? Multiple things have left their mark on me through the years. Shootouts, the Pearl High School shooting, the death of my training officer Andy Matthews and of course the death of Mike Walters. All of these have been hard and have taken a toll on me physically and mentally. The worst, only because I had to do it so much (hundreds of times), has been having to tell someone that their loved one, especially their child, will not be coming home. I have been an accident reconstructionist since 1991 and it still affects me even today. Certain dates, circumstances and families affect me hard.
My wife Sandy and I have been married for 27 years. It’s tough being married to a police officer. I think the hardest part is living with a man that has the mindset of trying to save the world. T.J. and Jordan, are our son and daughter-in-law, and Parker is our grandson. We have a daughter, Jessica, and a son Sam, the youngest and future Marine. God has truly blessed me with great kids. I am so proud of each and every one of them. They have been an instrumental part of my life. I learn from them every day.
Becoming chief. What an honor it is to lead the best police department.
Who is someone you admire and why? Ray Rogers. It would be hard to find a more compassionate, loyal, trustworthy and honest man than him. He knew my daddy and I can honestly say there is no one that has ever lived or breathed being a Pearl Pirate more than Ray. He represents the best of what Pearl, Mississippi is all about. When I grow up, I pray I am half the man he’s been to this city.
What is your favorite holiday and why? Christmas and Easter are tied. They are by far the most important days of the year.
What do you enjoy most about your typical day as a policeman?
What is your favorite childhood memory?
Communicating and helping people. I love seeing the look on people’s face when they feel like they have nowhere else to turn and I can help. Some days just a point in the right direction means the world to people.
What is the biggest mistakes young people make today?
What are three things on your bucket list? I am a simple man. My bucket list has been complete since I made chief. I would like to see all of my children graduate high school, get married and live happy and productive lives.
Being a kid in Pearl–playing sports, riding bikes, having great friends to play and interact with. Running track was my favorite.
Having the freedom to make choices, but not understanding the consequences of their choices.
If you could give one piece of advice to a young person, what would it be? Live your life daily in a way that would leave a lasting positive effect on your last name. Leave a positive mark on this world that would carry on from generation to generation.

The new library was such an upgrade to the old one. The library is now in a state-of-the-art building and has highspeed internet computers. It’s a great place for kids and adults to come, learn and to do research. It’s just a great gathering place for the community.”

Events The city of Pearl is host to many fun and exciting events throughout the year. The Pearl Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet is in February of each year and is held at the Clyde Muse Center on the beautiful campus of Hinds Community College in Pearl. The catered banquet is a much anticipated event throughout the area with local business people, civic and charitable organizations, and city, county and state officials attending. Special entertainment or a guest speaker is always a part of the program as well as the passing of the gavel from the outgoing president to the incoming president. The awards that are presented are the President’s Distinguished Service Award, the Large Business of the Year Award, Small Business of the Year Award, Pillar of the Community Award, and Ambassador of the Year Award. In addition, the Pearl Public School District reveals their new award recipients for the upcoming year at the banquet: Teacher of the Year, Administrator of the Year and Parent of the Year. The Mississippi Street Road Association Antique Car Show is held in March of each year. The 2016 event is scheduled for March 18th and 19th. Spectators and participants alike, from all around the state, turn out in large numbers for this awesome car show that shows vehicles from 1949 and older. The car show is held in the parking lot of Trustmark Park. April is an exciting time of the year in Pearl because that’s when the Mississippi Braves baseball team opens the season at Trustmark Park. The Mississippi Braves, who moved to Pearl in 2005, is the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The M-Braves play 70 home games

from early April through Labor Day. Since the inaugural season, over 100 former Mississippi Braves players have gone on to play in the big leagues. From giveaways to fireworks and much more, the Braves offer affordable family entertainment all summer. Aside from regular game tickets, the Braves offer luxury suite rentals, picnics, birthday parties and more. Trustmark Park also hosts various college and high school games along with other events throughout the year. The M-Braves opening day is set for Thursday, April 7, 2016, against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves are also set to host the 2016 Southern League All-Star Game presented by Trustmark on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. April 22nd is Earth Day and the Pearl Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual recycling and document shredding event. Bring all of your old computers, TVs and other electronics for disposal as well as your documents, files and other confidential information that you would like to have shredded. April is also a time for spring clean-up in the city of Pearl. Residents can have the city grounds employees come by and pick up their old washers, dryers and other items that they would normally have to haul away. For more information call the chamber at 601-939-3338. May 6th is the date for the 2016 Pearl Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. A huge buffet breakfast always precedes the program. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is the official kick-off for the annual Pearl Day Festival that is held every year at Trustmark Park. A large carnival with lots of fun rides, games and all of your favorite food vendors will delight everyone both young and old. Arts and crafts vendors from all over the area

sell everything from homemade jelly and salsa to jewelry and handmade duck calls. Live entertainment is on the stage with local artists and dancers performing all day; then at night, a nationally known artist will hit the big stage inside Trustmark Park for a free concert followed by a huge fireworks show. Speaking of fireworks, there is no other place that you want to be on July 4th than at Trustmark Park for a Mississippi Braves baseball game, followed by the largest fireworks show in Central Mississippi! August is the month for our very popular Girls’ Night Out Fashion Show. The fun begins with a walk on the red carpet to the photo area where complimentary photos are taken. When the ladies reach their seat, a “swag bag” awaits them that is filled with all kinds of fun gifts such as jewelry, lip gloss, makeup mirror and great discount coupons. The buffet lines are filled with an incredible array of delicious food, desserts and drinks. With five retailers participating, 75 models will be strutting their stuff in all of the latest fashions. The fashion merchandising department, including faculty and students at Hinds Community College, choreograph the entire production. This event counts as twenty percent of the student’s grade for the semester. Each merchant emcees their segment and awesome door prizes are given away in between retailers. It is truly the best Girls’ Night Out event anywhere around! September means one thing in the city of Pearl— high school football. The Pearl Pirates and the Park Place Christian Academy Crusaders leave it all out on the field as they play their hearts out for their school and their many loyal fans. The Pearl Chamber of Commerce holds their annual two flight golf tournament in October of every year at the Pearl Municipal Golf Course. It is a lot of fun and all the golfers receive a door prize for participating.
