PROFILE Firm Profile: Mad(e) in Mumbai takes its shape in madness of Mumbai city. This crazy patchwork of ideas, experiences and materiality is our repository as well as laboratory. It is a point where we begin. It forms genetics of our perception, speculation and practice. Our design methods and processes get groomed in this complex palimpsest. Understanding of this city percolates down to our thinking and our ideology towards shaping of environments. The chemistry of the city is meditated upon to discover potential fields for speculations and operations. The belief of our practice lies in looking beyond the visible for the unseen and for absurdities of things and places. Rather than confirming to good ways of building architecture/cities, it opens up avenue towards speculation and radical approaches that transcend the norms of design. It is a platform where ordinary and pragmatic reality is elevated to the heights of poetry and celebration through imaginative speculation. Incepted by Kalpit Ashar and Mayuri Sisodia, the studio is a platform for rigorous analytical and intuitive processes. It is a place for nurturing curiosities, cultivating ideas and exploring imaginations. Plethora of ideas are tried and tested through parallel working of the hand and the mind. Alchemy of the joy of making things with one’s own hand and delight of working towards highest standard of craftsmanship are cultivated. The designs are ruthlessly experimented and joyfully crafted through, models, experimental materials and drawings. The preconceived notions of using the materials are challenged to invent new possible physical realities. The works are celebrations of invented materials, building techniques and crafting skills. The endeavour is to shape timeless places that are works of pleasure and are enjoyed over time.

About Kalpit Ashar/Mayuri Sisodia Kalpit Ashar is an architect and an Urbanist based in Mumbai. He graduated with B. Arch (Gold Medalist) in 2005 from Kamla Raheja Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai. He completed his master’s education in Digital tectonics, self sufficient habitats and emergent territories from Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, Spain in 2009. Kalpit Ashar’s undergraduate dissertation was nominated for President’s Medals Awards 2007, RIBA London. He has won J. N.Tata Endowment, Kamla Raheja Foundation and Rotary Club awards. He was also a winner for IAAC study grant. After graduating, he was involved as a project architect with Charles Correa Associates working on various National & International projects. Through urban research and teaching at Kamla Raheja Institute he has continued his association with academic space. Currently he is a director at MADE IN MUMBAI, a young architectural practise involved with Architectural, Urban and Landscape design projects in Mumbai and as a design faculty at Kamla Raheja Institute for Architecture. Mayuri Sisodia is an architect and an Urban Designer based in Mumbai. She graduated with B.Arch in 2006 from Kamla Raheja Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai. She also undertook her master’s education in Urban Design from Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. After graduating, she was involved with Charles Correa Architects for many national and International projects. Her academic involvement includes teaching at Kamla Rahaeja Institute as a Design faculty. Her undergraduate dissertation was presented to Maharashtra Police as a real alternative for Urban Police Stations. She has also exhibited her work at Cities Methodologies exhibition for Urban Laboratory, Slade School of Art, London. She won Charles Wallace India Trust award for arts, 2010. She was a winner for J.N.Tata Endowment and Kamla Raheja Foundation awards. Currently she is also a director at MADE IN MUMBAI, where she pursues her interest in Architecture and Urbanism through multi- scalar design projects. Together they have participated in many national and International design competitions which include Evolo international housing design competition, New York, Mater Centro de Materiales del FAD matério, Barcelona, Freedom Park National Competition, Bangalore and Urban design competition for school of planning and architecture, Delhi. Their Competition winning entries include Revitalisation of Banganga Crematorium and Jogeshwari Civic Centre, Mumbai. They have also won International Competition organised by International Association for Human Habitat.

Lotus Eye Hospital The project attempts to rethink the typology and experience of a hospital. Traditionally these institutions have been imagined as spaces of Isolation where sickness of the city is housed and closely monitored. These ideas of surveillance are deeply rooted in the insular typology of a hospital. This project is an endeavour to transform this typology into a space of collective healing. The architecture of a Hospital is released to elements of nature, enabling proximity to the cosmic processes. This corner plot in Juhu is nestled in a dense green foliage. The Building follows the sun and wind directions, and weaves through the green foliage. The Built form is sculpted to release patches of therapeutic Gardens, which are always in oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proximity. The movement is choreographed through the interwoven terraces, offering moments of intimacy with the large trees. The architecture of the hospital disintegrates into experiences of feeling the large trees over time.

Institution

Performance Centre The project was an endeavour to explore transient quality of architecture. The brief was to design a temporary performance centre which could be dismantled and re-assembled corresponding to different events in the year. The centre was planned to house televisions shows and audiovisual recording facilities with its support programs. A large column free space was erected by using temporary steel structure consisting of trussed column, girders beams, space frame and scaffoldings. A large span enabled a flexible space to build different scales of sets. The roof is formed by stretching tensile fabric over the metal framework. The end walls of the structure house the internal programs of the centre such as green rooms, studios, Lounge, services and administrative spaces. The industrial aesthetic of the centre is blurred by infill of variety of local materials.

Civic Centre The project is based in Pascal Maidan, a playground which for decades has been a battlefield between the Hindu and Muslim community, during Riots. The project conceives a civic centre, which could heal the sufferings of the community and initiate regeneration. This community driven initiation consists of a local police station, a sociocultural centre and recreational facilities related with the Maidan. Currently the landscape slopes down towards the playground by 4.5 m, the built form is housed in this sloping terrain. The architecture is choreographed through sectional strategy enabling different relationships with the playground. The landscape flows through the building and creates fluid relationships with the surrounding fabric and the Maidan.

Banganga Crematorium

Death is one of the complicated phenomenon in the life of every individual. Crematorium, as spaces of dead lie at the periphery of our cities and hence our mind. Removed from our everyday life, these heterotopias live as spaces of exile. The endeavour of this project was to change the perception of death from a disease to an important and inevitable metabolic activity of life. Banganga crematorium sits at the edge of the Arabian Sea and shares an integral relationship with its neighbourhood. The attempt was to stitch this crematorium to the city through weaving a multidimensional program. The project articulated funeral activities, public gardens and Social programs together in the institution through a sectional diagram. The street edge came alive with raised public gardens overlooking the sea. The edge building housed administrative programs and Funeral programs. A shrine, a Satsang area and a multipurpose platform project out towards the sea. The Pyres sit in the slopping landscape surrounded by intimacy of water. Barbecue Pavilion The project is a simple roof set in vast landscape of a Golf course in Mumbai. Being an extension to Willingdon Sports Club, it lies surrounded by cluster of old buildings with sloping roof-scape. The Project brief was to design a semi open Barbecue pavilion, which extends the dining area of the club towards the landscaped Gardens. We imagined this piece of roof as a light fabric plane, almost about to take off towards the sky. It could be read as a bird, a kite, a floating feather, or just a roof. It continues the rhythm of surrounding sloping roof-scape, building a harmonious relationship with the existing built forms. It is designed as four folding triangular planes that adapt to the edges of the patio. A magnificent Fur tree rises in the Patio, where the roof cranks to make space for its foliage to grow. Pavilion in the trees

This pavilion sits in a plaza surrounded by three educational institutions. The brief was to design an informal semi open pavilion for the local student community as a space for interaction and daily conversations. The plaza is shaded with foliage of large trees. The proposed design is an undulating roof plane that manoeuvres through the foliage of these trees. Its quality is imagined as fragile as a spider web. The structure for the roof springs up from the trees almost like its branches and spans the plaza. A thin translucent fabric starches across the framework shading the plaza and enabling the local youth a space to gather.

Shade for a Courtyard The site is a linear courtyard nestled within three commercial buildings. The brief was to transform this piece of void into an outdoor recreational space for the office community. A semi open triangulated roof system was developed for the courtyard, which plugged onto the existing edge of the building. The roof raised itself at the centre of the court forming a high volume and a sudden flood of light. The profile of the roof is lowered towards the rain directions. While at the edge it takes off again and harmoniously adapts to the surrounding building line. The landscape features, a water body, flower beds, grass bed and seating bring more life into the courtyard. These features enliven the courtyard offering the people a space to pause and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Revitalisation of Elphinstone Mills

In our city starved of public spaces and amenities, this project was an attempt to create a model of public domain in the Mill lands. It endeavoured to strike a balance between different stake holders in the mill lands, the real estate market, the Mill workers, the neighbourhood and the city. Being in proximity to the Elphinstone Railway Station, the project offered possibilities of creating a public space integrated with the Railway Station. The building followed a mixed use program consisting of Office buildings, Retail shops, institutional buildings and public programs. Keeping the old historical Mill building intact, an intersecting hybrid circuit was developed which plugged onto the existing building. The project developed a continuous network of public spaces, connecting the Railway station and proposed public park.

Luxurious Housing, Chembur

The project is a high end mixed use Housing situated in suburb of Mumbai. The monotonous and repetitive appearance of a housing building was transformed by shifting profile of the floor plate. Though, the housing unit layout remained uniform, the profiles of flower beds and terraces were choreographed to break down the volume of the building further. The vegetation was used as a medium to enhance the form of the building further. The first two floors were designed as shopping centre while Amenities and community spaces were allocated at regular intervals through out the building.

Housing in a Gaothan

The project was exploration in ways of living in dense urban environments of Mumbai. The project sits on a small piece of land in the Gaothan of Bandra. Located in a crowded urban environment, this project had to creatively respond to the extreme constraints of space. A four storey structure is made up of four houses occupying area of 200 Sq.m. The building occupies maximum foot print on the plot. The scale of the housing is shaped to give it a character of a single house. The lower corner of the structure is spliced to serve as an entrance the building. The top is chamfered too, to release a set of overlooking terraces.

Space scrapper This thirteen storey high end housing is situated in a suburb of Mumbai, Bandra. Surrounded by dense urban fabric, the project sits in proximity to the sea. The building followed a hybrid program with shops and offices on ground floors, three levels of parking and rest of the floors consisting of housing. The uniformity of the skin was broken by releasing the corners of the housing units. Along with these staggering voids, the scale of skin was broken further by different sizes of openings. Housing at Fort The project looks for creative alternatives for living in dense Urban environments. This seven storey structure sits within historical inner city area of Mumbai, surrounded by old heritage structures. Nestled in a dense Urban fabric, the regional built form is devoid of open spaces, natural light and ventilation. This project looks for creative alternatives towards rehousing 108 tenants of existing derelict buildings with sale component, new open spaces and amenities. The proposal involves amalgamation of three plots to maximise the building footprint. The design process revolved around designing a compact layout incorporating these housing units and their amenities. The buit form develops around a central courtyard, which filters light through out the building.

This project is redevelopment of a small housing society located amongst gardens of Dadar Parsee Colony. The tenants of this society envisioned a housing building to be shaped according to their own aspirations instead of being a general commercial development. The clients approached us for the project management and architecture design consultants to develop a design where their houses are customised to their own needs. The work is developed into four phases which include project feasibility study, conceptual design, inviting tenders from developers and architectural design.

This 22 storey structure faces the Five gardens on edge, while the proposed mono rail corridor on the other edge. The housing units were designed to face the gardens and the service core was sited towards the mono rail corridor. Each tenant had a different area requirement and are provided with one flat per floor. The housing units are plugged onto the service core and its profile varies towards the garden edge. The amenities and open spaces of the society are housed on the ground floor.

Symbiotic Urban Commune This project attempts to address the redevelopment of housing in the Industrial landscape of the city. Its prime endeavour is to facilitate subtle relationships between the various classes residing in one built form. In this project, various communes with their sociocultural and recreational spaces are integrated in a single super structure as a cluster of communities residing vertically, forming a ‘symbiotic Urban Commune’. The project attempts to develop new habitat developed by the local communities, addressing questions of identity, locality and sustainability. Different communes share symbiotic relationships through their occupational networks. Events like sports and festivals are imagined as spheres of intersection between different strata. The sale component, rehabilitation component, recreational programs, amenities and open spaces are incorporated in a single super structure as cluster of communities residing vertically forming a ‘symbiotic Urban Commune’

The project closely looks at the dynamics of Housing redevelopment in the mill land neighbourhood of the city. The architecture of these housing in post industrial landscape has a difficult challenge of housing different socioeconomic groups together. This project endeavours to develop new imagination of housing typology, which sensitively integrates the different strata of the society. The sale and the rehabilitation component are configured in one built form and the conflict is addressed through appropriate choreography of their movements. The spaces for the existing chawl dwellers are imagined as an organic street opening into community courtyard around which the clusters of houses are arranged . Informal in between spaces weave through the neighbourhood enabling places for daily encounters. The houses for the sale component are imagined as a bungalows enclosing double storey void, which are located at the two ends of the built form giving spectacular visuals of the city.

Housing at Turner Road The vast majority of development in Mumbai take the form of residential housing, often standardised and cheap to guarantee a quick return for investment. We believe it is possible to build high density, economic viable housing that is also architecturally innovative. This project is explorations of the skins of housing buildings. The monotony of the typical floor layout and housing facade is broken by composition of circular apertures on the skin of the building. The size of aperture is varied in order to enable different qualities of light within the houses. The skin also has potential of becoming reinforced structural member which could transfer the load of the building.

Paradise Villa Paradise Villa sits on a thin wedge of land in a dense Mumbai neighbourhood. This ground structure is wedged in middle of sloping roof houses. The brief of the project was to restore the house, by keeping its older profile intact. Being a thin infill surrounded by tall structure, the prime concern was to bring light in the house. The skeleton of the roof was re-configured to form sky lights in the house. The sky light was positioned above a suspended metal deck. A staircase made up of a folding metal plate rises in the living room to reach this deck. One part of roof is released to sky forming an intimate terrace between the house and neighbouring stone wall.

Revitalisation of Andheri Sports Club

The project was an attempt to revitalise Andheri Sports Club, an institution along new Metro VEG corridor. This sports club is in a derelict and under utilised state due to insufficient programming of the complex. New programs were configured for the complex to transform it into an active urban institution. The programs include a media centre, new stadium, Public library, Performance centre, nature healing centre and public gardens. Existing built form and open spaces were articulated further to form an integrated and unified campus.

Rejuvination of D. V. Marg

The project attempts to re configure the experience of walking along the street-scape of D. V. Marg, Mahalaksmi. The street offers diverse experience beginning with busy Haji Ali junction to the landscaped edges of Willingdon Sports Club and other surrounding institutions such Drug addict centre, R. T.O and C.N.G. Station. The quality of street-scape is re-imagined through articulating it with its adjoining program. Uncertain Urbanism The laboratory for this project is Bora bazaar, a neighbourhood trapped within the central business district of Mumbai. The objective of this project is to predict directions for the possible urban growth of this precinct at the scale of an individual and neighbourhood. The site was tested with various parameters such as morphology, density pattern, sustainability and mathematics of growth. After evaluating pros and cons of existing redevelopment process, new strategies were developed which could enable the inhabitants multiple methods of redeveloping their plots keeping their own interest. Finer rules and regulations were formulated to align the growth towards equilibrium. To demonstrate these urban strategies further an alternative typology for housing and infrastructure were developed. The objective of this project was to configure community driven urban renewal through negotiations.

One of the weak areas of redevelopment policies in Mumbai is provision of temporary accommodation for the existing occupants of the building. The project proposed redevelopment of state owned plots at higher F.S.I. to provide temporary accommodation for the tenants of redeveloped building in the corresponding precinct. This transit infrastructure was imagined as a seed which could behave as a tower of amenities and absorb the infrastructural pressures of the inner city neighbourhoods. A hybrid program was developed for the typology which included, municipal markets, shopping plaza, Government office,parking tower and transit housing. The building was conceived as a self sufficient architecture which uses the natural resources of water, solar energy and wind for its functioning.

Tunisia Eco-opportunities

Fort Chilky is surrounded by the waters of Lake Tunis, a natural Lagoon situated between Tunisia and the Mediterranean Sea. This derelict site is an important chapter in the history of the city and is home to vital ecological processes. Our proposal aimed to rejuvenate the experience of this site by activating the edges and main central spine of the Lake. Through landscape strategy, new public programs are induced along the spine, which include a Museum, Public Baths, Agricultural Gardens and a bird sanctuary. These Programs are imagined as series of circuits that sectionally weave into one another to create a hybrid ecological experience. The landscape creates diverse sectional relationship and different intimate condition with water. It enables a public landscape to the city that enhances the city scape of Tunisia and sensitively activates the ecology of the site.

International Economic Terminal The aim of this project was to introduce an international business headquarters along the sea edge of Barcelona. The site is located at the beginning of Barcelona city while arriving from airport as well as sea. The project endeavoured to create a landmark gateway which could greet the international tourists at the entrance. The program of the gateway consists of transport interchange, office spaces, housing and hotel. The architecture of the gateway resembles a heap of stacked containers.

Aqueous Terrains

If you trace the undulating terrains of Istanbul, it reveals to you hidden valleys deeply embedded in the structure of the city. They reverberate with the rhythms of the seasonal water spring, originating in the hilly forests, meandering through diverse communities and dissolving itself in the depth of Marmara. These aqueous terrains are boundaries in themselves, isolated from their own surrounding, segregating communities and their social networks. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imagine community initiations in these ephemeral and agile landscapes, which listen to the seasonal rhythms of water. These initiations are places where water is collected, purified, circulated and celebrated. And through seasonal celebration of water, the boundaries between communities are blurred. These initiations are catalysts which synchronise rhythms of the spring with cycles of urban life,re- establishing the primordial relationship of man with water.

Urban Repository

The city of Istanbul is a dense palimpsest of diverse cultural and ethnic groups migrating from various parts of the world and Rural Anatolia. This leads to an interesting patchwork of languages, flavours, music, festivals, and stories coming from various parts of the world. We intervened in this vibrant landscape through the medium of a mobile Urban repository, named Orhan. This mobile installation derives its imagination from vending machine used by migrants in Istanbul, to make their own space in the city. The repository can take various forms, an archive, an infrastructure, a vending machine, a market, a street furniture, a home, a food stall, a newspaper stand, a garden, a mobile cinema. It is an Urban sponge which absorbs diverse character of the city and celebrates it.

Reserve Bank of India Exhibhition This travelling exhibition was a celebration of 75 years old heritage of Indian currency and history of Reserve Bank of India. The idea was to turn the rich and intricate beauty of these currency notes into a spectacle of the event. A fluid multimedia pavilion was designed to display these magnified currency notes. The idea was also to accentuate the rich experience of the currency notes. The information was projected through multimedia displays which engaged the visitors at multiple scales.

Butterflies

The brief of this project was to design a set of parasols for the gardens, set in a vast landscape of Willingdon Golf course. Inspired by the fauna of the landscape, we imagined them as fluttering butterflies. The Parasol was designed as a wing of a butterfly light and fragile. The angle of wings could be adjusted to seek protection from the sun. They could fold up in the evening and become a night lamp in the garden. The skeleton of the parasol was finished in lacquered aluminium covered with translucent batyline fabric.

Lantern

A suspended lantern was designed and constructed with planar sections and assembled as a cage with planar ribs, with an egg-crate technique. Varying cross sectional prototypes were put together to form this strange creature of light.
