The local roundup Made's North Notts Food & Drink Awards Judging The count down to the North Notts Food & Drink Awards has begun for the region's finest and the judges have chosen the finalists.

full and arduous day was instore for Made’s Gastronauts as they met to decide on the finalists of the inaugural North Notts Food & Drinks Awards.
Our judges arrived to a warm welcome, and breakfast, by our hosts for the day, The School of Artisan Food. A day of discussion, deliberation
6
and debate ensued – with the odd abstain, as you’d expect with local foodies working in the region and having one or two fingers in pies. And it was great to hear some of the experiences and tastes that had been enjoyed around North Notts. Like the day’s weather talks were changeable. At points
things would start to heat up, even getting a little spicy you might say. Maybe that was Made’s mistake for throwing in a few nuts… but in the end it was the perfect recipe for a balanced result. Made were thrilled to have so many entries from individuals, groups and organisations which the Gastronauts
whittled down to 48 finalists across 17 categories. And now it’s the job of the judges to decide the winners ready for the awards evening being held on 25 October at the prestigious Grand Hall at Worksop College.

Southwell Workhouse Infirmary Open To The Public Visitors to The Workhouse in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, have for the first time been able to see inside the infirmary that served the inhabitants.
T
his follows a major five-year project by the National Trust, with funding from the Welcome Trust, to restore the derelict building and unlock some of its secrets. The Workhouse was built in 1824 as a place of last resort for the poorest who couldn’t work and for those people suffering from unemployment. It is now the most complete workhouse in existence. Firbeck infirmary, built nearly 50 years later in 1871, provided medical care for The Workhouse. Later it became a care ward in the 1970s but had been untouched for decades after closing its doors in the 1980s. Based on extensive research, different spaces in the infirmary have now been created to showcase the history of social care over two centuries. The reimagined depicts how the infirmary cared for people when it first opened in the 1870s, through to its final residential use. Sara Blair-Manning, General Manager at The Workhouse, explained why the work was carried out.
“It’s three main reasons really. Its about sharing our wider story, so moving away from quite a static presentation of the 1840s to talking about everything. The 1820s all the way up to the late 1980s, when the last resident left this particular building. Sharing more of our stories and giving access, so not only conservation wise in terms of restoring this building and putting a lift in so that people can get actual physical access to the site, but also access to our 20 years of records that both the volunteer and researches have compiled, but also quite extensive academic support from quite a lot of universities and also the National Workhouse Network, which we’re a founder member of, so we’re utilising all that information. “And then final, it’s about talking about contemporary issues that are happening now and giving visitors, and supporters
an opportunity to compare and contrast whether or not society has made any real difference or any real difference or progress even.” Visitors will have access to several spaces, including the room of the last resident, which encourages reflection on how we care for vulnerable people today. Two rooms will also be dressed to focus on maternity care as it was in 1871 and a century later. As part of the project, library is now open to the public in the infirmary for the first time. Visitors can explore Workhouse records and archives, including letters, journals, oral testimonies and other material, which have taken volunteers 20 years to research and transcribe.
own perceptions of what the Workhouse and infirmary mean to them. Changes in the main Workhouse include a freer visitor route, encouraging exploration of the building as the segregated inmates themselves would have used it, plus new digital guides bringing Workhouse stories to life. For details and opening times, visit: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/theworkhouse
Sara Blair-Manning said the completed project allows the story of the next stage of the stage of the site to be told. “So, originally all the care provision would have taken place in the workhouse building, then in 1871 a law was passed where you had to have a separate infirmary, and then after the inception of the NHS - the building sits slightly outside of that because it was still run by the local authority, but it was used in different ways really, so it was used as single parent bedsit provision, usually for single mothers and then this building housed children and adults, but then just became, in the late seventies and eighties, elderly care provision.” . The infirmary includes studio spaces for seasonal exhibitions and installations encouraging discussion around poverty and social health care provision in the past, present and future. One of the first exhibitions was Dolls’ House, in which Dr Natalie Jones, Newark Emmaus Trust and artists from Warwick University have worked with young parents who are homeless – historically, single mothers were one of the highest intakes into the Workhouse – to explore the idea ‘what is your ideal home?’ This will develop over time as visitors add their

Fun In The Sun At The First-Ever North Notts Food Festival Chefs Brian Turner CBE and Dean Edwards were the star attractions at the inaugural North Nottinghamshire Food Festival in Worksop on 25 July. Festival-goers were treated to cookery exhibitions from the stars, as well as entertainment from comedy chefs Liver Cottage. Robin Hood Theatre In The Spotlight The Robin Hood Theatre in Averham is looking forward to a fresh look for the Front Of House, with a little help from Richard Carnill, Carnill & Co, and a few of it's volunteer friends The Robin Hood Theatre is a small public theatre situated in the countryside in Averham. Built in 1913 it became a public theatre in 1961. The theatre is still a bustling hub of entertainment for the community and visitors from further afield today. The team behind the daily working of the theatre is currently looking to update the front of house, along with ongoing maintenance that is required and is always on the lookout for some extra assistance in the volunteer department. This includes restoration, fundraising, improvements and general running of the theatre during the performance evenings. Made were invited along to see the work in progress and have a sneak preview of the new plans for the front of house after Richard Carnill, the owner of Carnill & Co in Southwell spoke of the theatre’s wish to upgrade.
Carnill & Company is a shop that houses a unique lifestyle collection. It reflects Richards love for European design. Richard Carnill himself, has considerable experience renovating homes both in Europe and the UK. He saw this as an opportunity to help out the theatre by putting forward his interior design services. He has created the design for the front of house that will bring the theatre up-to-date while in-keeping with it’s style and making it an inviting place for visitors, adding warmth through beautiful textures, colours and the lighting effects that can be created. One of the lovely finishing touches will be some imagery of the history of the theatre on show for the visitors to see. If there is anyone that feels that they would have something to offer that might make a difference please get in touch with The Robin Hood Little Theatre, it is a real gem and deserves to be put in the spotlight.
Geoff Morgan, Chairman of the Board at the theatre gives Made a closer look into the interesting history of The Robin Hood Theatre in our November/December issue. Don't miss the next show: Private Lives by Noel Coward. Tue 24 and Sat 28 Sept. For details visit: www.rhtc.co.uk

Newington Quarry Newington Quarry restoration is on track for easier access for public viewing of its exciting wildlife.
Erin McDaid, Head of Communications & Marketing, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, tells us more.
W
ith mineral extraction at the Newington Quarries complex in Bassetlaw, owned by Hanson UK, entering the final two years, a new phase in the life of the site is dawning.
Situated between Newington and Misson in the floodplain of the River Idle, this long established quarry is set for a new chapter as a stunning wildlife habitat where people will be able to see a wide range of species, including many threatened birds. The transition from productive industrial site to valuable wildlife area has not happened overnight and is the fruit of a long partnership between Hanson UK and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust which stretches back to 2002. The charity, which has long experience of restoring former minerals sites, supported an allocation in the Minerals Local Plan for the Newington South quarry, on the basis of being able to secure large-scale re-creation of rare floodplain habitats that had been lost to agriculture in the 1980s and ensuring the nearby Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) was protected and enhanced. Over the past 17 years the Wildlife Trust’s Head of Conservation, Janice Bradley has been involved at every stage of the project from planning application and restoration advice to proposals for the 26-year management and aftercare plan for the habitats for Hanson UK, which will come into place in late 2020 for Newington North and South Quarries. Janice has worked hand in hand with Hanson UK, a leading supplier of heavy building materials to the construction industry, advising from the earliest stages to ensure restoration with the best possible outcomes for wildlife at the site. The plans for the complex of quarries include easy access views of wetland wildlife from elevated viewing areas along the central byway, providing the best opportunities for viewing exciting species whilst ensuring that wildlife is less likely to be disturbed. It is hoped that once completed, the site will attract wildlife from the highest priority red list of Birds of Conservation Concern including curlew, redshank, snipe, bittern and bearded tit, as well as key mammals including otters and water voles. John Ingham, Hanson’s Principal Landscape Architect with responsibility for the restoration of Newington Quarry stated: Flying Redshank NWT. Photo: Mike Vickers.

Last year Janice Bradley, the Trust’s head of Conservation was awarded an MBE for her services to wildlife in the county.
John Ingham Principal Landscape Architect Newington Quarry.
“Hanson enjoys a strong partnership with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust which has provided invaluable input and advice during the development of restoration proposals for our quarry at Newington. With the help of the Wildlife Trust, Hanson is delivering significant biodiversity enhancements in this formerly intensive arable landscape.” “The final phase of restoration work for Newington South Quarry, which will be completed later this year, has been designed with input from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, and a long-term management plan for the site has also been developed so that the benefits for wildlife will continue to be delivered for many years after Hanson finishes extraction at the site.” Given the site’s position close to the River Idle and proximity to other valuable wildlife areas including the Trust’s Misson Carr and Idle Valley Nature Reserves, the future for a range of key species in the area looks bright. In partnership with sister Wildlife Trusts in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust is also working to restore and reconnect wildlife habitats across the Humberhead Levels and the Newington site is a vital step forward in achieving this. Janice Bradley commented: “We look forward to continuing our discussions about the restoration of wet grasslands and reedbeds at Newington Quarries. The complex is already developing into a Bittern. Bird surveys conducted earlier this year recorded successes for a range of species including redshank and lapwing, highlighting the value and potential future value of the site. The Anniversary Of The Mayflower’s Voyage Sails Into View By Dr Anna Scott, Heritage Consultant & Chair of the Pilgrim Roots partnership. For this edition, we have updates from ongoing activities related to Pilgrims’ heritage in our area. The 16th of September is the date the Mayflower sailed to America from Plymouth, Devon. Next year’s events to mark the 400th anniversary promise to be a spectacular series of moments across the country. Mayflower 400 partners are planning events in Plymouth, Southampton and Dartmouth on the south coast, in the Mayflower’s home ports of Harwich and Rotherhithe, and in the places where many of the ship’s passengers came from – in Worcestershire, Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, and of course, North Nottinghamshire.
What’s on this September and October? Bassetlaw Museum’s new Pilgrims Gallery will open to visitors in September, thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The gallery features the Pilgrims’ story and a recreated ‘Brewster Study’, with 17th century style furniture and objects bringing Nottinghamshire’s most well-known Pilgrim William Brewster’s story to life. If you’re interested in taking a guided tour of Pilgrims’ heritage sites, there are now a range of tour guides offering their services to visitors near and far with online booking options. More tours are being developed with a range of experiences across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. For a self-led experience, you can download the Mayflower 400 app with information on where to visit and suggested trails around the Pilgrim Roots region and other Mayflower 400 destinations. Dance performances from The Imagination Museum: Mayflower 400 team are scheduled for October half-term in Newark’s National Civil War Centre. Choreographer Katie Green has led performances in the region throughout 2019, telling the story of the Pilgrims’ origins and their journeys to Holland and America. Audiences have been impressed with the show’s amusing and at times poignant
reflections on the risks the Pilgrims took by seeking a new life in America. Tickets are available now for a planned coach tour on Saturday 28 September with Pilgrims & Prophets, who specialise in Christian heritage tours. Their next tour features the Disney family, puritans, a Quaker meeting house (similar radical nonconformists), and a visit to Holme, where the owner of the boat they escaped in lived. This year’s Pilgrims Festival in November will once again feature a series of ‘Illuminate’ events to commemorate the story in Gainsborough, Bawtry, Boston, Retford, Immingham, and for the first time, Worksop. For those who want to take part in the parade, there will be lantern-making workshops starting in October half-term. To find a Mayflower tour guide or download the app, see: www.mayflower400uk.org/ visit/. See The Imagination Museum: Mayflower 400 on Saturday 19 Oct 2019 at the National Civil War Centre, 14 Appleton Gate, Newark, NG24 1JY. Performances at 11am, 1pm and 3pm (standard entry to the museum applies but there is no additional event charge); tickets to performances are free but must be booked in advance at: www.palacenewarktickets.com To find out more about Illuminate workshops taking place in October and November, see: www.bassetlawchristianheritage.com/ events/ and www.discovergainsborough. com/pilgrim-roots/.

Harley Gallery 25th Anniversary The Harley Gallery celebrates it's 25th anniversary in style, including exclusive behind-the-scenes tours. Hundreds joined The Harley Gallery on the historic Welbeck Estate, near Worksop, in August to help celebrate its landmark 25th anniversary of the award-winning gallery, which over the years has showcased contemporary art exhibitions from artists including Sir Peter Blake and Andrew Logan to the gallery’s latest exhibitors; the highly acclaimed artists, Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry. The celebrations opened with a speech by William Parente, Chair of the Trustees of The Harley Foundation, before visitors enjoyed birthday cake and a celebratory drink and
were invited to look around the exhibition. Artisan food, barbecue, picnics and children’s activities took place within the Courtyard at Welbeck during the day, along with exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the Welbeck Village and Welbeck’s Victorian Kitchen Garden. The Welbeck Estate, which is one of Nottinghamshire’s ducal estates, is not normally open to the public so tickets for the behind-the-scenes tours sold out within an hour of going on sale. During the day visitors were able to take
part in a competition to win a private tour for a party of five to go on a tour of the 5th Duke of Portland’s building programme, now known as Welbeck Village. Lisa Gee, Director of the Harley Gallery, said: “It was lovely for us to welcome so many people to our 25th anniversary celebrations, particularly artists we have worked with and regular visitors who have supported us for so many years. In William’s speech he spoke of the power of art and creativity to sustain and grow communities and the party on Saturday was a testament to that.”
Children’s Trail At Mayflower 400 Church The Arts Society Dukeries’ latest Trail of Discovery is at St Wilfrid’s Church in Scrooby, North Notts. The village may be small, but it is renowned, especially in the USA, for being the home of William Brewster, the Pilgrim Father. The local Brownies were the first children to complete the trail at the recent launch at the church. They were welcomed by the vicar, Rev Jackie Mckenna, and joined by members of The Arts Society Dukeries and Scrooby Parish Councillors for a most enjoyable and informative evening. The trail was printed with support from Bassetlaw District Council.

Marketing is not sorcery. You can’t expect to wave a magic marketing wand and ‘tah dah’ you’re at number one on Google and receiving floods of new leads. If only, huh?! Here are a few things for you to consider.
Embarking on marketing activity without a clear vision or strategy will result in wasted time and money. Often business owners believe that marketing is simply social media, videos, emails, blogs or podcasts. Understandably wanting to see quick results, they jump straight into specific activity without taking the time to think about what it is they want to achieve. There are many levels to consider when approaching marketing for your business which shouldn’t be taken lightly or skipped over. No. 1 – What are the long-term goals for your business? Your long-term goals should align with your business vision and are intrinsically linked to the reason you started your business – your ‘Why’ (see Made Issue 9). Think about the direction you want your business to go in. Maybe it includes a new market you want to serve, or a new product you want to take to market. Whatever it is, it should make you feel excited and hopeful for the future of your business. No. 2 – What is your strategy to implement your long-term goals? Your strategy should be your medium-term goals – the steps you need to take to achieve your business vision. Be as specific as you can and set targets or percentages to really focus the mind to come up with ideas you can implement.
20
No. 3 – What methods will you use to deliver your strategy? To achieve 1 and 2, you need to take action. Your short-term goals are the specific actions needed to deliver your strategy. Remember the four Ps of Marketing – Price, Product (or service), Place, Promotion. Try not to be tempted to jump straight into promotion (social media, blogs, etc.) when in fact, this is a very small part of the overall marketing function. Plan and remember your ‘Why’ and your marketing activity will be enjoyable and not a chore.
Embarking on marketing activity without adequate resource will result in lack of consistency and at best, very little engagement. Pat yourself on the back if you have a clear vision for your business and high fives all round if your strategy and communication methods are in place. But have you factored in how you are going to find the time to write content and schedule regular social media posts as well as respond to comments and enquiries, for example? Just in the same way as you outsource or employ people to carry out your finance, IT and HR functions, you should seriously consider how and/or who will complete the marketing tasks. Even if you’re outsourcing your activity, you still need to be available to provide updates on your latest business news. For the sake of your sanity and the success of your business, be honest – have you really got the energy or resource to manage your marketing activity consistently and engage fully with your audience? If not, either hang on until you are ready or employ someone who can.

If The Bill Fits... Made meets Bill Ming, a true creative soul, and finds out more about his journey not only from his home in Bermuda but also the through the art he creates.
M
emories, experiences and events that have shaped Bill Ming’s life take centre stage in the work he creates. From his time in Bermuda, to London and then closer to home in Newark, it’s all about harnessing thoughts and feelings he has gathered over the years. Describing his work as ‘crazy activity’, Bill works from his studio near Newark, creating sculptures and other art pieces that have been inspired by his travels. “It all started in Bermuda, that’s where I’m originally from – born and bred there,” says Bill. He still visits Bermuda where his work is well known. In fact, in 2006, the Arts Council of Bermuda honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. A lively and energetic character, Bill has an infectious laugh and wicked sense of humour that can be seen clearly in much of his work. Today he still works to the same ethos he always has, utilising anything he can get his hands on. “In 1948, when I was a kid, I remember they had lots of cedar trees. There was this blight that came in and killed most of them. So as a kid you’ve got all these trees around and you start playing around, making things with a penknife or whatever. I ended up making a lot of things. I was the person in the neighbourhood people came to, to make things. I was the go to guy.” Growing up it was the USA that Bill and many of his friends turned to for inspiration and entertainment. Heavily influenced by American culture, Bill would use his creative skills to make things he’d seen on TV. “American TV in Bermuda was big. Cause we’re 600-700 miles from New York in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We’d get all their TV programmes and comic books. So a lot of my interests were in America.
This sculpture is titled 'Can you see me now?'. Creating an experience from every angle, Bill's work represents much more than just being a piece of art. Each piece has a meaning deeper than realised at first glance. Works are inspired by life experience, friends, family and politics, evolving organically as he works with the materials at hand.

News
“I’d make go-karts based on all the new cars that came out such as the Desoto, the Lincoln Continental, all out of wood.” As he got older he looked for work and his first job saw him working at a printing press. “I’d use printing blocks of letters, working and reading things backwards to print onto the newspaper. I worked as an offset printer for our local newspaper. I did that for four or five years but I then got fed up and wanted to move on.” Locally there was a ship called the Queen of Bermuda, which used to take passengers to New York and back. The ship caught Bill’s attention and was the start of a new journey. “I just hopped on that boat and worked on that for four years. We’d go down to Florida, South America, the Caribbean. For a young kid coming from a small place to America it was a real eye-opener. I remember seeing James Brown in the 60s – wow! Rock and roll was my thing – still is. All this stuff influenced me over the years, you know?” Bill came to England in 1971, first to London where he lived for a while, before moving to live in Nottingham, Derby, then Mansfield. “I kept getting pushed along – no one wanted me,” he jokes. “When I was in Mansfield, at college, there were all these wood carving tools and nobody was using them. And I asked to use them. And I asked what to do and the teacher just said ‘just go deep’ so that’s what I did – that’s where the essence of the wood is.” Today his studio shows a selection of his work, from wooden figures to abstract art and metal and wood designs. It’s an artistic journey through Bill’s life. He works with sycamore and walnut and his favourite, lime, a light, easy to carve wood that he uses to shape into his works.
Bill has had comissions, exhibitions, teaching and community projects across the globe.
One piece of work has Bill using some old printing press lettering to depict steps ascending and telling stories along the way. He sources a lot of his material from local markets. He takes his inspiration from everything and anything, including friends and relatives, and people he has met along the way. “I get a lot of stories and ideas from my time in America. I’d meet people and they’d tell me about their stories. And growing up you see a lot of inspirational things in Bermuda. “I’m still on the journey I took from Bermuda to here. I still feel like a big kid playing and creating my art.” Bill regular exhibits his work locally. For further details visit: www.billming.com

14 Sept Harley Gallery Young Artists Harley gallery, Welbeck
Young artists are to see their work exhibited amongst rare treasures and the art of Old Masters when Nottinghamshire’s historic Portland Collection reopens on 14 Sept. After taking part in a unique literacy and art project, the children have created an exhibition, which will be unveiled in The Harley Gallery on the ducal Welbeck Estate, near Worksop. As part of the project, the 26 children, aged between five and 11, were given the chance to study miniature portraits that form part of a collection built up over centuries by the Dukes of Portland at Welbeck. Dr Petula Bhojwani and Craig Wilkie, from Nottinghamshire County Council, worked with the children to help them create their own artwork, stories and digital apps inspired by the portraits. The children were given tasks that would encourage them to read more, whilst also developing their literacy and creative skills by devising stories. The treasured miniatures, which inspired their work, will form part of the new display of fine
and decorative arts within The Portland Collection, which will reopen after a transformation following the theft last November of the Portland Diamond Tiara. The Trustees of the Harley Foundation have been overwhelmed by the extraordinary success of the storytelling project. William Parente, Chair of the Trustees, said: “In a long career in the arts and education I don’t think I have come across anything quite so imaginative, so admirable, so successful. The engagement of the children in their stories was quite remarkable, and the creativity and diversity of those stories wonderful to behold.” Dr Bhojwani said: “The outcomes are stunning and the learning that has taken place is remarkable. We are grateful for The Harley Gallery’s support for the project. Access to a museum collection and opportunity for children to exhibit alongside has not been done before and I feel privileged to have shared news of the project with an international audience at the UK Literary Association Conference.”

Celebrating Heritage 13-15 Sep Heritage Events Weekend
14 Sept Retford Heritage Open Day
Various Areas, Retford
Retford is set to host one of its biggest weekends yet with thousands of people expected to visit the town and be part of three very special events. Over the weekend of 13 to 15 September, the town’s traditional Heritage Day will take place alongside the very first North Notts Literary Festival, as well as the start of the Chesterfield Canal Walking festival. The combination of these events promises to be a huge tourism boost for the area and showcase the rich heritage, literary talent and beautiful scenery Retford and North North Nottinghamshire has to offer. Cllr Jo White, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “There really will be something for everyone as part of an action-packed weekend that promises to be one of Retford’s biggest ever. “We hope that as well as the regular supporters of the Heritage Day, new and exciting events as part of the North Notts Lit Fest and the Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival will attract first-time visitors to Retford and the surrounding area. The council is extremely proud to support all three events and enable even more people to see exactly what a beautiful and diverse region North Nottinghamshire is.”
Heritage Open Day
Retford has been celebrating its rich history as part of Heritage Open Day for the last 12 years and traditionally incorporates a central theme, with 2019 focussing on the ‘Chesterfield Canal and Retford’s Working Heritage’. On 14 Sept, 12 heritage venues including Bassetlaw Museum, the Majestic Theatre, Harrison’s Brewery and Retford Library, will host guided tours and dedicated talks. There will also be narrowboat trips along the Chesterfield Canal on the Seth Ellis and many other events taking place throughout the town, culminating with an evening performance by Harworth Brass at Retford Town Hall.
Derek Turner, Chairman of Retford Civic Society, which organises the Heritage Open Day, said: “Visitors will receive a warm welcome to our marvellous market town and this is a once-a-year chance to explore the world on your doorstep. All of the day’s events and attractions throughout the town are family friendly - and best of all they are all completely free.”
North Notts Lit Fest
The very first North Notts Lit Fest will burst into life on 13 Sept and continue through to 15 Sept with a host of award winning writers, poets and performers staging events for all ages. Just some of the experiences lined up include talks from Retford’s own Stephen Booth sharing the secrets to his international success; BAFTA Award winning writer, TV producer Henry Normal and Powerhouse Poet Paul Cookson hosting an evening of Pies, Peas and Performances; as well as other special guests including writer and historian Emily Brand, and the exceptional Talegate Theatre. Liz Carney-Marsh, North Notts Lit Fest Ambassador, said: “I’m thrilled to say that we are finally able to showcase the literary talent that exists within North Notts to a much wider audience. “The creation of this festival is a natural evolution of our Short Story Competition and it will shine a light on all the good things that are already happening within the local literary community. The North Notts Lit Fest will celebrate outstanding local authors, poets and performers as well as bring together local businesses and organisations to allow literary lovers to explore and enjoy what North Notts has to offer!”
Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival
Finally, the Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival is back for a second year following the inaugural series of routes that attracted hundreds of walkers and canal enthusiasts to the towpaths of the Chesterfield Canal.
The festival takes its first steps on 14 Sept and over nine days, its 53 guided walks will cover the full 46-mile length of the canal that stretches over three counties, including events incorporated as part of the Heritage Open Day. Rod Auton, Publicity Officer at the Chesterfield Canal Trust, said: “This year’s festival offers a wide range of walks from just two miles to the full 46 miles of the Chesterfield Canal.” “As part of Heritage Open Day, there will be several historic boats near the Town Lock, the chance to try paddle boarding and interactive family performances. Alarum Theatre Company will also be giving a free performance of their much acclaimed ‘Idle Women’ show in Retford Little Theatre.” Both the Heritage Open Day and the North Nottinghamshire Literary Festival are being supported by the North Notts BID, and Chief Executive Sally Gillborn said: “North Notts BID is delighted to be sponsoring and supporting both the Heritage Open Day and North Notts LitFest. Both events are fantastic for the local community and will attract visitors in from surrounding areas. They will also bring much-needed footfall to the town centres to help our local businesses thrive, whilst at the same time showcasing our wonderful area.” More information, event guides and timings for all three events can be found online at: www.heritageopendays.org.uk and: www.retfordcivicsociety.org.uk. Programmes will be available from Retford’s Bassetlaw Museum, Denman Library and The Hub. The Sally Mitchell Gallery, Tuxford The Society of Equestrian Artists was founded in 1979 by a small group of likeminded artists who felt Equestrian Art was worth its own society of appreciation. This group of artists wanted to meet, paint and talk about equestrian art and to exhibit their work as a group in prestigious galleries. Today, that society is now a charity that has grown to some 350 members, who range from those who are just lovers of equestrian art, enthusiastic amateur artists, or artists starting out on their artistic journey to experienced professionals, who are known throughout Europe and beyond. The Society warmly welcomes members of all abilities, from anywhere in the World and has a loyal following of overseas members. We have paintings from as far afield as Australia and Ireland being exhibited this year. The purpose of the Society continues to promote excellence in and appreciation of Equestrian Art in all its forms. Exploring forgotten spaces between urban and rural landscapes, the artist creates an archive of stories reflecting working-class people in everyday life. An autobiographical series of curious narratives merge childhood memories with real life events that occurred in the working class Midlands areas where she grew up and studied, and still lives and works today. With titles such as The 5.00am Beasts Roam the Streets and A Post Punk Love, vanishing women, strange lights in the sky, mysterious crop circles and other bizarre phenomena feature in the works on show. "I am fascinated by neglected spaces hidden between urban and rural places, often overgrown yet full of life; people meet here. Wildlife thrives; they are strange magical corridors, which can be seen as metaphors for transformation, changing identities, memory and experience." THE SUTHERS SCHOOL IS COMING HOME The Suthers School is a new 11–18 school which opened in September 2017. Established by the Nova Education Trust, the school serves the communities of Newark and its immediate surrounds and will be moving to brand new, purpose-built facilities in Fernwood, Newark, in 2020. The school’s uniquely character-centred approach means that personal development is ranked alongside academic preparation and, through its extended day, The Suthers School guarantees access to a broad range of enrichment opportunities. This includes the chance to participate in nationally-recognised programmes, complete additional qualifications and compete in a range of sports. “The Suthers School has at its heart the absolute conviction that young people deserve an education that excites and enthuses. Our ‘work hard, be kind’ philosophy, together with our unique approach to character development means that there is something very special about The Suthers School.” Andrew Pettit (Head of School)

Back to School
For many people September means back to school time following the long summer break.
From uniform and stationery to afterschool clubs and leisure activities, there is also plenty to organise at this time of the year. It can always be a time filled with emotion, with excitement building about the new term ahead and maybe a touch of sadness that your young ones are going back after spending so long at home. Choosing stationery can always be fun. Try involving your children in the process, asking them what they like, trying to make it a pleasure rather than a chore. Uniform is an obvious new purchase for the start of the new term. Six weeks is a long time and many find their old uniforms no longer fit or simply need changing because they’re worn. It’s not too late to get buying and of course remember you’re looking immediately to the colder months ahead – so long sleeved shirts and trousers may be more the order of the day.
After School
YMCA in Nottinghamshire has opened new after school clubs ahead of the new school year. With its Ofsted registration, parents can use all major tax-free childcare vouchers, childcare grants and government tax-free childcare schemes. The organisation says it provides children with engaging activities that keep their minds, bodies and spirits healthy. On the sites, there is access to their own childcare area with lots of space both indoors and outdoors for creative activity and play. These facilities allow for da fantastic range of activities including crafts, indoor and outdoor sports and STEAM sessions. STEAM focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, providing children with something new and engaging whilst also being
42
educational. Children will take part in interactive activities and will have the opportunity to discuss what careers could be available within these fields. YMCA says it wants children to see what is possible for themselves and what they can achieve in the future. By providing enjoyable projects and inspiring role model Play Leaders in a safe and positive learning environment, the YMCA says it helps to build children’s confidence and support their education and learning while also having tonnes of fun! To find out more about prices, locations and timings, please visit the YMCA website www. not tsy m c a .c o m /c hil d c a re termtime. You can use the online booking system 24/7 or get in touch with the bookings team by emailingchildcare@ nottsymca.org or calling 0115 711 7006.
If you haven’t already, look at rounding off that homework that was set for the summer holidays. Preparation is key, so try not to rush and try to guide your children through! Homework can be fun, and getting involved in your child’s projects, particularly the ones set over the summer holidays, can be very rewarding all round. For the last six weeks much of your time may have been taken up with organising events to keep your children happy and entertained, but remember, although the summer break has ended, there is still plenty of after school activities on offer to help maintain the entertainment. Look at leisure centres for their range of activities, while schools themselves can often hold plenty of afterschool clubs offering a wide selection of activities to suit your child’s interests. North Notts has all you need for everything back to school, so enjoy having a good look around.

The Snowdrop Wedding
One wedding that stood out to the organisers at Hodsock this year featured the stunning snowdrops, horse and carriage, and an unusual ring bearer... One of our most quirky wedding was Hazel and Glenn’s Snowdrop themed wedding in February this year. The bride arrived in true style in a horse and carriage. Turf was laid down the ceremony aisle in the Oak Panelled Hall, a perfect setting for the snowdrop theme where Zuki (Hazel’s gorgeous dog) could then walk the rings down the aisle. The bespoke ulster fry canapés were as individual as the wedding too, and they went down brilliantly. A handsewn ‘Zuki’ enjoyed pride of place among the table centres and was also a favours for the guests. The bride and groom even wowed their guests with a choreographed first dance.

Wedding Stories
Kay Gill, Flowers By Kay, has created floral perfection for many weddings and here tells us about one of her most colour filled and fabulous weddings...
Jess and Michael were married at St Katharines Church at Loversall on the hottest day of July last year! Their reception was at the Barns at Unique Occasions In Loversall followed by reception in a Tipi in the meadow.
A Tipi Wedding
Linzi Hardman from Inkersall Grange Farm shares her memories of Ruth and Amy's fabulous wedding. On a beautiful summer's day, in the peaceful Nottinghamshire countryside wedding, guests waited in anticipation for the bride to arrive. However, no one was expecting an entrance like this! To their surprise, they looked up in the air to see a helicopter and before they knew it the beautiful bride had landed.
There were no rules to this wedding. Silver sequinned skirts for bridesmaids, dip dyed blue veil for something blue for Jess, colourful and bright flowers to carry and in hair. Stephen the dog attended complete with glittery bow tie. My handmade ribbon top table skirt with huge sunflowers on finished the tipi off with jars of flowers on tables and with guests partying from start to finish on vodka shots, ice lollies and amazing food. It was certainly a wedding to remember from start to finish.
This was followed by a lovely humanist ceremony outside in the grounds of Inkersall Grange Farm, where the sun shone and guests looked upon two beautiful brides Ruth and Amy who said their own vows amongst family and friends. Inside our tipis were brightly lit with colourful, prideful bunting throughout, which certainly created the wow factor. The drinks flowed, the laughter grew louder and then they danced the night away under the stars. A match made in heaven for two beautiful ladies.

Wedding Stories
Steve and Angie's big day took place in his childhood home, a place for fond old memories and now a place where new memories have been made.
A Magical Wedding
Emily & Thomas envisaged a magical wedding day, little did their guests know just how much magic the day would involve until they stepped into the world of Harry Potter that had been created inside Thoresby's Riding Hall. The bride tells us more...
Peak Edge hotel is located on the cusp of the beautiful Peak District National Park with spectacular views across the hills. In July this year, the owner of Peak Edge Hotel and a global brands drinks company (responsible VK, Hoopers, Franklins and many more) held his own wedding at this stunning Derbyshire wedding venue. Peak Edge Hotel, Red Lion Pub and Restaurant holds fond memories for Steve, as it was his childhood home. His parents owned the famous pub in the 60s and 70s and it’s where Steve first discovered his passion for business and hospitality. On the day, the beautiful new lakeside Pagoda was transformed in to a flower emporium with florists working round the clock. The guests sat in Chiavari chairs listening to the ceremony enjoying the sunshine that shone across the grounds and lake. Steve, who is also the former UK rally driving champion, had an array of classic vehicles as transport to and from his wedding including a wonderful vintage Land rover which he and his new wife Angie departed in.
Due to my love for all things Harry Potter, Tom decided to propose to me at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London in the last room where the huge Hogwarts castle model stands. Very magical! I said yes straight away of course. As we had decided to go all out on the Harry Potter theme, we needed a venue that could be bespoke and allow us to be completely individual. We also needed a rustic type of venue to suit the theme. Thoresby riding hall with its brick walls and high ceiling looked ideal. We also liked the fact that we could get married at Perlethorpe church, which is a short walk away on the site and also stunning.

We went mad with the plans, there is so much you can do with this theme. We were lucky to have Dan Ross who provides the Individual by Design service at Thoresby. He spent time watching the Harry Potter films in order to provide us with some great ideas himself. We could not have achieved what we had without all his hard work. We have some great friends who created all the centre pieces for us. We decided that we wanted to have the tables named after a class in the Harry Potter films such as potions, dark arts etc. Each centrepiece matched the class and they were amazing! It took my friends months to finish them. As for the décor that Dan provided/set up, all the
guests were astonished when they walked in due to sheer amazement. One of the main highlights of the day were the fireworks towards the end of the evening to the Harry Potter theme tune! We loved planning this wedding. The theme made it so exciting. The best advice I can give is to enjoy every minute of both the day and the planning process as it’s the most amazing day! It’ so easy to get stressed and fret about every detail but the reality is that all goes well on the day and even if something doesn’t quite go to plan the guests are almost certain not to even notice! Also try and make it individual to you and remember it’s your wedding so there’s no right or wrong.

A Grand Wedding
We talk to Emily and Simon who chose Worksop College for their fabulous day... Emily and Simon have many happy memories to look back on after choosing the perfect venue for their wedding. Emily has strong connections with the college – her three younger brothers have and are currently studying there and her father, Stephen Armstrong, is a school governor, so when it came to deciding where to get married, she didn’t need to look far. “I’ve been to services at the college before and always enjoyed them, so when the chance to get married there came up I was delighted. I’ve always thought Worksop College was a great venue," said Emily. "The venue was superb. The staff were excellent and it was so convenient having everything together in one place. We had the chapel, the canapés, the outdoor space, all close together. This made things work very well. There were also lots of nice shaded areas to go to out of the sun." “It was a wonderful day. The weather was very hot, probably a little too hot at times, but we
were very lucky that it was warm." Emily and Simon got engaged two years ahead of their big day, giving them plenty of time for organising.
The couple spent a ‘minimoon’ in Cannes, in the south of France, and will be heading out on a longer honeymoon at the end of November that will take them to Singapore, Bali and Hong Kong.
“Simon proposed on the day we moved into our new house, which I didn’t expect at all. He’d wanted to get to the house before me but for some reason I got there first and he was really stressed that it was this way around. He followed me through the house and said I should try the front door to make sure I knew how to unlock it. So I opened it and he was inside on one knee. I thought I’d actually knocked him over at first! “Two years was the perfect amount of time for us to plan our wedding. We did things like pay for items along the way, bought bits off Ebay and other places on the internet. We got the big things organised early such as the venue and photography – and then worked everything else around this. We also had a really detailed plan of the day that everyone working on the day had access to – this helped things run smoothly.”
Worksop College Weddings Set in a picturesque 330 acre site, with peaceful and spacious grounds, Worksop College is the perfect setting for your Wedding Day. A Renewal Wedding
Married for 20 years, this inspirational couple chose to renew their marriage vows at Doddington Hall near Lincoln in spectacular style. The team at Doddington were delighted to tell us more... Danielle and Paul originally tied the knot 20 years ago in a true 90’s style wedding, opting to hold a vow renewal with their two boys in attendance was something very special to them as a family. The couple chose Doddington Hall as they believe it’s one of the most beautiful Elizabethan houses in the country, quintessentially English with stunning gardens. They renewed their vows in the Long Gallery in a relaxed and intimate ceremony with close family and friends, eldest son Dominic was the best man and youngest Fabien gave his mum away. After the ceremony, the wedding party headed over to the Coach House for food and celebrations, starting with drinks and a selection of canapes, followed with a BBQ all sourced from the estate or locally. The evening was finished with a charcuterie table and the entertainment was provided by a surprise appearance from the singing waiters along with a magician and an eight-piece band whom, filled the floor with their vocalist and saxophonist playing soul and funk. Danielle wore a beautiful dress with a lace cape and gardenia blue shoes during the day and had garden roses individually wired into her hair. Paul opted for a less traditional style and wore a light checked suit (showing off a little ankle!) and their boys wore suits with matching colorful bow ties, finished off with braces and a loafer shoe. Danielle is a talented florist herself so the wedding flowers were always
52
going to be spectacular! With the help of Rachel Petheram of Catkin Flowers (based in the kitchen garden at Doddington) they created a breathtaking oversized bouquet of seasonal British fresh flowers. Trailing asparagus fern and larkspur hung from the ceiling in the Coach House and beautiful bright urns decorated the tables. A hire company provided rustic trestle tables and chairs, which were dressed by a local event stylist with lace runners, glass beaded charger plates, coloured glasses and personalised table numbers, which represented significant dates in their lives. A spectacular cake sat next to the top table on a beer barrel with an old door as it’s back drop with a cheeky “cakey” sign, which was an inside joke with the groom, with lamps saying “light of my life” as the cake topper which was a nod to Paul’s profession. All of our weddings at Doddington are memorable to us, from front of house to kitchen, weddings are a team effort and it’s our sincere desire to make every wedding as memorable as possible for our lovely couples. Danielle and Paul’s vow renewal really stood out to us, it was the most beautifully bold and colourful day filled with love and happiness. It was amazing to see the way Danielle and Paul transformed the Long Gallery and the Coach House and really made it their own. We’ve already been talking about their next vow renewal at Doddington!

A Festival Wedding
News
In May 2019, the team at Hirst Priory, led by owner and experienced wedding planner, Hazel Wheatley, hosted Jessica and Kieron’s special day. The happy couple got engaged abroad when they were travelling around Thailand. In Koh Phi Phi they were snorkelling and diving for shells and Keiron swam up to Jessica holding the ring which she thought he had found on the ocean floor but then popped the question. Jessica said she nearly drowned! One of the unique spaces offered by Hirst Priory for weddings is the enchanting woodland area which provides a magical ceremony that is unique, different, stylish and breathtaking. Jessica and Kieron had a clear vision when it came to deciding the wedding theme - festivals and music. A DJ played the couple’s favourite tunes throughout the day, covering upbeat house music to classic Queen and where Bohemian Rhapsody sung by the entire party almost raised the roof. Later on in the evening, the DJ, accompanied by a saxophonist, played house and techno music and this became a highlight of the evening when the couple were lifted on to family members’ shoulders, singing out with pure joy and love. Said Jessica: “As soon as I saw the woodland area at Hirst Priory I knew there and then that it was where I wanted mine and Kieron’s wedding to be. Festivals were a major part to the theme and the woodland made it a reality. The natural greenery combined with Jessica’s chosen meadow-styled flowers com-
plemented their festival theme further. Wooden benches and covered straw bales for guests to sit on were placed on either side of the aisle which was centered in the middle of the woodland. In keeping with the woodland feel, the bridesmaids’ dresses had a leaf lace design which tied in with the foliage and trees, a small detail which worked exceptionally well. The groom and groomsmen were all dressed in tweed with pale moss-green ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses and stylish brogue shoes. The groom also sported a flat cap, a conventional twist but one which suited Kieron down to a tee. Once the ceremony was completed under the overhanging branches with the sun glistening through, guests then had the excitement of entering the huge tepee by Serentipi that was put up on Hirst Priory grounds where the party could begin in earnest. The tepee was decorated with the same magical theme as the woodland and at night the fairy lights added a touch of romance. Kieron said that, “The team at Hirst Priory did a great job in transforming the woodland area and tepee to how Jessica and I envisaged our wedding day. All our family members and friends keep saying they had a wonderful time and would never forget our special day.”

A Meadow Wedding Hannah and Ian were married in August this year in Ellicar Gardens, surrounded by a beautiful floral meadow, the perfect setting for their start together in life.
Accompanied by her dad, bridesmaids, bridesman and a two very special ring bearers, (two golden guernsey goat kids, called Erica and Calluna), Hannah walked through the orchard at her parents' home, down a grassy aisle of airy Molinia grasses; along a frothy, white flower meadow, awash with butterflies and through the tiny woodland to an unplugged marriage ceremony beneath the canopy of an old oak tree. Three musician friends played and the celebrant was a dear friend Stephen, who made the day very special right from the start. After literally tying the knot in true Celtic style, Hannah and Ian were showered with petal confetti and watched by two curious llamas, residents at Ellicar Gardens. The reception was held in a pole marquee on the lawn, that just fitted between the garden
borders with flowers spilling into the sides. It was decorated with rainbow bunting, pom-poms and dip dyed napkins to match, all made especially by Hannah. The beautiful bouquets and a floral crown for Hannah and her bridesmaids were all flowers picked from the garden. Locally brewed beer and ale flowed and guests danced all night to a fabulous and energetic ceilidh band. Delicious vegan food was served, chosen especially by Hannah and Ian. A family friend created some spectacular lighting effects across the water in the garden's Natural Pool, which was just next to the tent. Children ran around all evening, nipping off in between dances to see the goats and feed the pet pigs, it couldn’t have been a more magical wedding. Hannah and Ian never stopped smiling and laughing the whole day long.

‘’The understated elegance of a bygone era echoes throughout the hotel, capturing the true spirit of an endless house party.’’ ‘’The honey stoned Georgian house has been in the Skirving family for more than 150 years, now a unique 13 bedroomed hotel & restaurant situated in the heart of the Vale of Belvoir. When my grandmother Imogen Skirving opened the doors to her family home 30 years ago, she dreamt that people would feel as if they had been invited to dinner by a dear friend, she wanted them to feel as if they were in a home from home, with delicious food, wonderful wine & even better company. Today it is much the same, at the end of an avenue of lime trees, you will find the other world of Langar Hall. We keep the charm and quiet eccentricity of an English country home, with just the right amount of modern to combine the best of the past with the best of the present. Langar Hall was the first venue in Nottinghamshire to be licensed for Civil weddings, Since 1995 we have specialised in smaller and more intimate weddings, offering bespoke packages & tailoring your experience with us to ensure that you want for nothing on your special day. At the heart of the house stand Executive Chef Gary Boothe & Head Chef Ross Jeffrey who have shaped the dining experience throughout the past 15 years with fresh, local ingredients, a rich tapestry of traditional mixed with creativity and a pure love and passion for what they do.” Yours truly, Lila Arora

Let the festivities begin...
Ye Olde Wedding Della and John tied the knot at Ye Olde Bell this summer in June. They shared their experience of their big day with Made.
We chose Ye Olde Bell for our wedding venue as we were recommended the venue by a family member. We decided to book into the restaurant to see what it was like. The food was fantastic and we had first class service, the staff were so friendly and helpful and that was the main element we were looking for in a venue – for our guests to enjoy good food and receive excellent friendly service. Wanting an outdoor ceremony I could not have wished for better grounds, they are beautiful and kept to a high standard. We had a party of 110, so room was important and there was plenty of it. General Manager Kate Firth looked after us on our wedding journey and she could not
have been more helpful, every query and concern we had she dealt with in a professional and friendly manner. I was worried how the day would flow and I had nothing to worry about, Kate made it look seamless. Kate and all the staff were excellent. We continue to visit the venue, including the spa, on the merit of how friendly the staff are and how excellent the food is. We decided on a black and white themed wedding for our big day and all the guests wore black and white too. The favourite part of the day was walking down the gardens for the ceremony and seeing all my beautiful guests dressed to impress, it was a sunny day and the gardens looked beautiful.

Wedding Stories Catherine at Kitticakes tells us about one of her most memorable wedding cakes to date‌
There is one wedding cake that stands out in my mind because of its sheer size and quirkiness! The board itself that sat on was around four foot long and it was a beast! My and husband and I spent two full days and stayed up all night the night before it was delivered. We finished working on it at 9am, and set straight off to the venue. It was a fully edible sugar Walkers haulage truck pulling a three tier wedding cake. The bride had her white tiered cake and the hubby got his truck that he was so proud of. They were over the moon with it and so was I. It created plenty of interest and was even shared by DAF trucks and walkers haulage firm on their social media sites.
Dressed To Wed...
Picking the dress that you have always dreamed of can be a daunting task, where to start, what style to choose, how to dress the bridesmaids... It is all in hand at Frances Day Wedding Boutique in Southwell, where it's the team's pleasure to make these dreams come true for all the brides to be that visit. The summer months see the team at Frances Day welcoming a steady stream of epic new gowns to the boutique alongside receiving images from the fabulous women they have got to know and grow so close to during their bridal journey. One of the brides, Amelia sent through her wedding pics and there were many an excited squeal let out as everyone at the Frances Day Boutique poured over them. Opting for a bespoke Suzanne Neville number, Amelia and her bride tribe were a laugh a minute to work with. Super chilled out with oodles of creative ideas on how to make her and Dan’s big day truly their own. As a highly successful interior designer it was evident that the wedding was going to be dripping in style. A flower filled garden party at the family home was the order of the day and the cake was jaw dropping!

Destaination weddings - Mauritius The perfect match, the perfect destination. One of our most popular wedding and honeymoon destinations is Mauritius. For an increasing number of couples the idea of a wedding in a romantic, tropical location makes perfect sense – and nowhere is more romantic than Mauritius. All of the island’s resorts will happily and efficiently handle wedding ceremonies so it’s simply a case of deciding which of Mauritius’ many resorts to choose. Imagine the sun’s warm rays filtering through the shade of overhanging palms, while gentle waves lap the coral sands of a tropical beach beyond. What could be lovelier

than lifelong memories of your wedding day in that faraway paradise of your dream? We will help you side-step the stress of organising a big or even a little wedding in the UK. Destination weddings can be a little trickier to plan and it’s so important to work with the right specialists to make sure all the planning legalities are taken care of making sure you have everything in place for the day of your dreams. Although the cost of a Mauritian wedding differs from resort to resort and according to season, You could get married in Mauritius from only £3,000 per couple and that includes the honeymoon! Some resorts like the Westin Turtle Bay can offer free weddings along with couples’ accommodation packages.
Not forgetting the stags and hens... Stag and hen parties are no longer a quick trip to the pub the night before, you’d be surprised at some of the parties we’ve booked. With more people to please they often take more planning than the honeymoon and The Travel Diamond take away this worry by creating an organiser for all your friends. Popular options include lodges with hot tubs in the UK or beach parties in Marbella for the hens whilst a popular choice for the satgs is a few nights in Las Vegas.

Marshall's Yard Marshall’s Yard makes its fashion debut at Market Rasen’s Summer Plate Ladies Day! Marshall’s Yard’s fashion stores took to the catwalk at Market Rasen Racecourse as part of the Summer Plate Ladies Day Event. A host of fashion retailers from the centre treated race goers to a fabulous preview of some of next season’s new looks. The Marshall’s Yard team worked alongside The Fashion Exchange to showcase outfits from top brands as well as a great range of affordable fashion. Models were cat-walk ready thanks to makeup from Estee Lauder at Browns Department Stores and hair by the creative team at Sophie Amelia Hair based in the centre’s Pattern Store units. The Marshall’s Yard “style spotters” also proudly hosted and judged the event’s style awards awarding the best dressed lady, best hat and best dressed couple with a stunning range of prizes donated by the stores at Marshall’s Yard amounting to over £5,000.
Alison Shipperbottom, Centre Manager at Marshall’s Yard, said: “We have all really enjoyed preparing for the event and seeing the Yard come together to really put on a great show – Ladies Day is a big day in Lincolnshire’s diary and we were delighted to be involved with the event and give race goers a flavour of some of the great brands available at Marshall’s Yard. “The day was thoroughly enjoyable with everyone in good spirits despite the odd downpour. We were especially pleased to see that our bright pink Marshall’s Yard flip-flops were so well received.” The stores at Marshall’s Yard are now busy working with Market Rasen Racecourse and The Fashion Exchange to deliver a winter themed event at their Winter Ladies Day on 19 Oct. www.marshallsyard.co.uk

Ready To Face Anything Face Gym, less than ten minutes a day and no need for lycra! By Peter Rixham, Retford Sports Massage.
A
series of pre-wedding facials will no doubt feature on many brides-tobe's planner, but what about a course of Face Gym?
The muscles of the face, like most muscles of the body respond well to exercise and will tone and strengthen. Face Gym, sometimes referred to as Face Yoga, is an intense workout for your facial muscles which should leave you feeling tired yet refreshed. Another benefit to adopting a mini facial exercise regime is that there is no need for a gym membership or any lycra, as these exercises can be done anywhere you choose. I would suggest starting off in front of your bathroom mirror. Gurning on the train to work or even at your desk, might pose questions from those around you, particularly in the early stages when you are mastering the techniques. Stick with it and you will slowly see the results of your dedication. This is not a quick fix and the more frequently you do the routines the better the results. Expect to see a change after 3 months, if you exercise your facial muscles, at least 5-10 minutes a day.
Getting started You are going to be pressing on to your skin and massaging your face, so a quick cleanse to remove any make-up, or surface debris is a good first step. It will also remove excess facial oil to give your hands a better grip as you do the techniques. You want your finger tips to glide purposely over your skin, without overtly dragging, which can take a bit of time to master. Persevere – it will be worth it!
Mind set I am a huge believer in positive thinking. I always ask my Face Gym clients to choose a key word that resonates
64
with them, ‘wonderful’, ‘fabulous’, ‘amazing’. Over the years the most popular word has been ‘gorgeous’, but you decide. I appreciate the next bit might sound kooky but give it a try. After each set of exercises and before moving on to the next, say out loud, ‘I feel amazing’ (insert your chosen word) three times, with sincerity. If you don’t believe it, no-one else will.
Facial exercises An effective course of Face Gym has at least 12 exercises to target various areas of the face but here are three to get you started:
Forehead lift (3 mins) Using the thumb and first finger create an L shape. Place both L shapes on the forehead just above the eyebrows and push upwards to the hairline, to lift the muscle up. Whilst holding the fingers in place frown down for a count of 10 to gently stretch the muscle – the aim being to diminish forehead wrinkles. Repeat this sequence three times.
Eyebrow lift (3 mins) Using the thumb and first finger create an L shape. Place both L shapes under the eyebrows, as if the eyebrow muscle were resting on your fingers and push upwards. Whilst holding the fingers in place frown down and ‘out’, hold for a count of 10the aim is to strength the muscle to help diminish any future eyebrow drooping. Repeat this sequence three times.
The goldfish (3 mins) Using the pads of the first two fingers press into the natural dip between the two parts of the jaw at almost mid-point of the ear at the side of your face. Slowly opening and closing your mouth move your fingers down to the angle/edge of the jaw, pressing firmly but within reason.
You should experience muscle fatique/ burn, this is normal. Do this three times in the morning and evening. Beauty is more than skin deep, by working on your facial muscles you can really tone and strength their integrity and potentially slow down the ageing process. Garden Meadows In this issue, landscape designer, Sarah Murch of Ellicar Gardens, shares the joy of sowing a perennial meadow in her garden and explains how a mini meadow brings a flourish of colour and wildlife from spring right through winter.
T
here's a meadow in my garden... Sown from a packet of seeds last summer, it flowered in April, waves of purple Honesty became a sea of blue Echium by June, turning into frothy, white umbellifers in August.
It is a place where our garden visitors linger, mesmerised by the sheer exuberance of flowers and astonishing numbers of butterflies and bumblebees. The meadow has a vibrancy and life of its own that draws people in like no other part of our garden. Each day reveals new flowers, surprise combinations. Is there such a thing as “meadow bathing”? Because when I walk through the meadow between thousands of jostling flowers, I emerge smiling, uplifted. This little meadow is a riotous, happy place and it has been incredibly easy to achieve.
Perennial Meadow vs Wildflower Meadow For your average domestic garden, wildflower meadows can be tricky. They often flower briefly and can become quite messy looking after flowering. However, stylised perennial meadows have the look and feel of wildflowers with the advantage of a long flowering season and low maintenance requirements. And they are a magnet for wildlife. Just imagine the pollinators, dragonflies, moths, bats, and birds we could support if every garden in the UK had a few square metres of perennial meadow? So, if you are toying with the idea of a meadow, or you just want to brighten up your borders with a burst of flowers, a Perennial Meadow, like mine, could be the answer.
What is a Perennial Meadow? It is a specially formulated mix of wild flowers and perennial flowering species, designed to repeat flower year after year. Ellicar Gardens' perennial meadow, courtesy of Sarah Murch.
72
My meadow comes from Sheffield’s Pictorial Meadows, experts in creating high impact, low input, stylised meadows (they are responsible for those glorious meadows around the Olympic Park in 2012 and Rotherham’s award winning 8-mile River of Flowers). Formulated to flower from spring to the first frosts, with around 25 flower species per mix and a whopping 120 plants per m 2, there are meadows for sun, shade, and different soil types. And with a colour palette from eye-popping hot colours, jewellike designer schemes or dreamy whites and pastels, you are sure to find a meadow mix to compliment your garden.
Seed vs turf Mixes are available as seed or turf. Seed is lower cost but requires some skill during establishment. Turf is quick and easy to lay, results are instant.
When and how You can lay turf or sow seed any time of year, September being the optimum month for seed sowing. Sow seed at 2g per m 2. Mixing seeds with sharp sand helps, pick a calm day to sow and divide the ground into sections using canes and string.
Maintenance Treat your perennial meadow just like a perennial border. We gave ours the ‘Chelsea Chop’ in May, ensuring it peaked for my daughter’s wedding in summer. I will cut it back again this September. It will flush neatly, flower again, producing seed heads for the birds through winter and look magical with a dusting of frost. Dead foliage should be removed in March. Perennial Meadow 'Golden Summers' courtesy of Pictorial Meadows.

Beautiful September Gardens To Visit Whilst the summer months are traditionally garden visiting months, we are fortunate in Nottinghamshire to have gardens open through September and even one in October. Alongside these gardens there are also 16 gardens or groups of gardens who open for the Nottinghamshire National Garden Scheme by arrangement. So whether you are a group of enthusiastic amateur gardeners, a photography club looking for inspiration, or simply a group of friends, you can be sure of a warm welcome and plenty of tea and cake. For more details of our ‘By Arrangement’ gardens, please visit www.ngs.org.uk Here are the September gardens for you to enjoy:

What equipment do you need? I used Jakoti shears and a sickle to cut back our small meadow. Tackle larger meadows with reciprocating shears, long reach hedge cutters, or specialist tractors.

Mini meadows Perennial Meadows are not just for parks or country gardens. Mini meadows look fabulous in domestic, urban and contemporary settings too. To loosen up your borders, try stitch planting sections of meadow turf in amongst your existing plants. Edge a path or wrap a mini- meadow around a bench. Encircle your lawn with a perennial meadow or be bold and turn your entire front garden into Proudly maintained Proudly by maintained a perennial meadow - the bumble bees will certainly thank you.

Would I do it again? Definitley! I’m itching to sow another meadow. Perennial meadows are a joyous celebration of sheer flower power. I would encourage anyone who wants flowers in their life to give it a go. Just a couple of square metres of meadow turf is sure to make you smile.

Home & Garden
A Growing Home In this issue, Kelly Roden, owner of Meliora Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms in Bawtry, tells us why extensions shouldn't be overlooked, it might be just what you need if you've outgrown your space.
W
hen space is a premium, its easy to underestimate the positive effect adding square footage can have on your home. It often requires professional help but isn’t as daunting as it may seem at first. Lots of our clients come to us during such a project and here are some tips we’ve picked up. The change in permitted development law means a detached house can now extend by 8m and a semidetached house by 6m so this allows ample room to design a generous addition to your home. Double check with the local council and remember you’ll need to meet building regulations (more information about this can be found at planningportal.co.uk). A major factor to consider is your outdoor space and what space the extension may take up. This is almost as important as the indoor space and how you want the two to connect. The exterior finish of the extension should also be a consideration especially if in a conservation area. A wood cladded finish or clean rendered look are very popular at the moment. Design from the inside out – think of the space you want to create internally and play around with different layouts to see which one works best. Think of door and window placement - lots of glazing is good but think of where the natural light comes in and how that will impact the internal fittings and layout. When looking for trades recommendations from friends, family and neighbours are usually best – especially if you have opportunity to see the result of their work. Once the design for the extension has been agreed it’s time for the finer details – to think about how the kitchen will look. Build up a picture of how you would like the space to look and feel – Pinterest, showroom visits and images from magazines are always a good start. What you do and don’t like about your current kitchen is a good indication too. To avoid potential problems plan and create a schedule with all trades and communicate this across the board to ensure everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet. Communication is key throughout the project and having a good and open dialogue with any contractor is absolutely vital.

Great Foundations Meet Alison Swan Parente, the founder of The School of Artisan Food. Starting with the desire to create the highest quality, long fermentation bread to building the foundations of a school that has all of the ingredients for inspiring a new generation of artisan food creators.
F
rom child psychologist to founder of the School of Artisan Food, it’s been quite a journey for Alison Swan Parente.
With the basic wish of wanting to make good quality, long fermentation bread, Alison turned her idea and vision into what has become a worldwide renowned centre of food teaching excellence. But first, there was the little matter of setting up a high quality bakery, something she’d always dreamed of doing. “I first started making bread in the 1970s, in America,” Alison told Made magazine. “I remember an amazing book called the Tassajara Bread Book. It taught all of us how to make bread. “I’d always known about this (type of bread) from places such as Italy and France, and we began to see it in London at this point, and I thought this is the way forward, we’re going to produce this very interesting long fermentation bread.
84
“I had read a book by someone called Andrew Whitley, who is my guru I have to say, called ‘Bread Matters’ and I thought I wonder what he would say about starting a bakery here, because he had started a long fermentation bakery in the wilds of Cumbria.” Alison contacted him, went up for a chat and before long Andrew was on board as a consultant for the project to build what would become the Welbeck Bakehouse. They drew up the layout, built some big wood-fired ovens and set about hiring a head baker. “The problem was nobody knew how to make this type of bread,” says Alison. “So, we decided we’d teach people how to. Andrew had already been teaching people how to make it and I think he saw the potential. “At the same time, I thought this is a fantastic skill that is going to be needed more and more and we could see that this type of
Food & Drink
bread was going to take off, so we thought what an amazing idea if we could actually teach skills that were forgotten.” The next challenge was to actually find a baker, which they did in Roman, a Polish baker who was working at the time in Lusaka. He worked at the bakehouse for the first two years. This idea of teaching people to make bread soon got Alison thinking of even bigger and more ambitious plans – and so the early beginings of the School of Artisan Food were born. Alison looked at funding opportunities to begin the project, starting with a grant from the East Midlands Development Agency. “The grant application was to produce a school of artisan food, which would be based on butchery, charcuterie, cheese and bread, where we would be bringing people in who had very good skills and who had no particular infrastructure in place in which to share these skills.” She put the grant application through in November 2008 and the funding was secured in January the following year, with the condition the money was spent by March 31. “All of the infrastructure in the school had to be developed rapidly,” says Alison. “We had a fabulous architect who worked very quickly with us.” Workstations in training rooms were installed and by September the school was ready to put on its first short courses. A yearlong diploma in butchery, cheese and charcuterie, followed in September 2010. A few months before the school opened its doors, it was the subject of a BBC food programme, which gave it a much needed boost ahead of it its first course starting in the September. “We had some great students and wonderful teachers such as Val Bines, who taught cheese, a really very skilled cheese maker; Ray Smith who came up from River Cottage to teach the butchery and we had Emmanuel Hadjiandreou and Wayne Caddy to do the bread, making our teaching a very high standard.”
“Artificial tastes are very entrancing but they pull people towards eating masses of fat, masses of sugar, and if you take the artificial tastes out people feel it’s bland, until they really begin to taste again, what real food is like." Alison says she is keen to think about the barriers to good eating and how this kind of food can be as interesting and as much fun and taste even better than processed food – particularly in the production of bread. It takes time, according to Alison, to make the perfect loaf. “It takes at least 24 hours to make a decent loaf, but the loaf you will get is very different. First of all it tastes of something, which is an advantage, secondly when you give it to your teenager, after the third slice they are going to be full because it's good and has probably more whole bits in it from grain. But the other point is it’s going to have spent 24 hours just digesting its contents – so the gluten will be much more worked, everything will be much more developed. So if you put this very complex bacteria and yeast into your gut, then that helps to maintain its health and its equilibrium.”
"what an amazing idea if we could actually teach skills that were forgotten"
Alison is very enthusiastic about the school’s approach to food, particularly in how she says it compares to much of the processed food on supermarket shelves. She waxes lyrically about the taste and healthy benefits of a non-processed approach. “When processed food started coming into the market, which was probably at its zenith in the late 60s, it was the beginning of our absolute enchantment with processed food for very good reasons; it was convenient, it was cheap, it helped free up time. Nobody really realised what a difference it was making to everybody.
Now in its tenth year, The School of Artisan Food is keen on expanding its role even further within the community and beyond. Alison is keen in particular to ensure the school’s resources are offered to as many people as possible. The school has recently partnered up with Nottingham Trent University, which means students will be arriving this month (September) to start a two-year foundation degree in artisan food production and will be delivered at the school and NTU's Brackenhurst campus, giving people access to student loans to help fund the course.

Rewarding Experiences at The School of Artisan Food
“We're hoping to build on our partnership with Nottingham Trent University and make sure we are able to teach as many people from as many different backgrounds as possible about artisan food.” And, of course, Alison says plans are in place to ensure the school continues to thrive. “Survival is always good,” says Alison. “We would like to expand our charitable work and be financially resilient enough to do that. I think we would like to be more joined up with other agencies, so for example we do a lot of work with the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum. We always have one refugee on each of our courses. We’re in partnership with a social enterprise nearby at Langwith. So being able to expand our charitable work would be something I would aim for.” But it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Alison and her team. There have been some ups and downs along the way, which Alison agrees was always going to be the case. “There are masses of challenges when you create something like this. I think I would break them down into cultural, financial, outside economy and challenges with meeting a student’s expectations. “The challenge is also to start something from scratch and get it right – that’s probably the biggest. But there are lots of different micro challenges through the years. I think the challenge is to start something from scratch and get it right. Everyday is a challenge – but a good challenge.” Away from the school, Alison enjoys reading "quite a lot” of modern fiction and enjoys going to the theatre and cinema and spending time with friends. “I think keeping up with your friends is very important all the way through your life. I like seeing them. I like travelling and I love cooking. I actually do, genuinely cook to relax. If I’m stressed then I poke my nose into the larder and see what I can do with what’s in there.” And her signature dish? “Spaghetti with tomato sauce. That’s my kind of go to dish. If the whole family is there, that’s what they ask for. I do a very good spaghetti with tomato sauce.”

Scrumpy Wasp Tim and Leanda Needham are the creators of Scrumpy Wasp Cider. It all started after a summer in 2011 when Tim found inspiration in the local real cider in Cornwall, they decided to build a micro cider mill in East Markham, a village in Nottinghamshire already well known for its Heritage Orchard and apple festival, the perfect place to create the

one and a half tonnes of apples an hour, but it is run at a ton an hour to get an even better yield from them.
Tonnes of apples are delivered straight to the cider mill, which overlooks open countryside in the heart of the village of East Markham, and work begins on making a variety of ciders, each created and developed onsite by owner and cider enthusiast, Tim Needham.
While the juice heads off to one of the 30 fermentation tanks, varying from 1,600 to 7,000 litres, the mulch from the juiced apples is used as animal feed, a favourite of pigs apparently, as well as some local longhorn cattle.
“We use two types of apples here,” says Tim, who showed Made around the mill during a recent visit. “We use dessert apples, mainly from local farms. We get about 10 tonnes from the Heritage Orchard in the village on a good year and around 40 tonnes from Goacher’s orchard at Wheatley. Then we get cider apples varieties in from farms in Hereford.” It’s a relatively short harvest time for Tim, with all the apples they’ll need processed in just a few weeks. “Really from mid-September to the end of November is our harvest. That’s when we need to get all of our apples in that we need, and get them milled, processed and get the juice into the tanks and start fermenting.” The apples that are tipped straight into the yard are then taken to the washing stage – a process that ensures every apple is ready to be transformed into tasty cider. The primary wash tank carries out an initial clean, they are washed a second and third time, before heading to the mill and then onto rollers where their juice is extracted. Hand picked apples from Goachers are dropped directly into the mill from crates. The pressing process can whizz through
“Dessert apples are actually easier to process and we get a bit more yield out of them than we do the cider apples. Cider apples tend to be a bit firmer and produce less juice. We get around 650 litres out of a tonne of apples.” Tim stores around 120,000 litres in these fermentation tanks a process that turns all the sugar into alcohol. The cider is then stored in the tanks for months, maturing and developing its own, unique taste. The cider that is bottled supplied to off licences, farm shops and small supermarkets. The rest of the cider is blended, carbonated and kegged to supply local pubs. You can also go in and try a cider in Scrumpy Wasp's own bar called the Bad Apple, a snug, inviting place that gives you the opportunity to sample different ciders from still to carbonated, including Bad Apple; Nice Pear; Overcast; Hibernate, Apple and Rhubarb. Artisan, Wind Fall and Nice Pear are the kegged ciders that are the served at the bar. The bar area, designed by Tim and Leanda, is a rustic affair, detailed to go hand in hand with the cider mill feel. It's open to the public most days. For details visit: www.scrumpywasp.co.uk

Nature, History & Heritage
T
Exploring Newark with travel writer and photojournalist Sally Outram. his super walk begins in the pretty village of Farndon, which nestles on the bank of the River Trent and is just 2½ miles from the splendid market town of Newark.
With a long and fascinating history, Farndon is incredibly lucky to have three environmentally significant nature reserves; Farndon Park Woodland, Farndon Ponds and Cottage Lane Nature Reserve, plus Farndon Willow Holt and Water Meadow, which is designated as a Special Area of Conservation. Attracting a huge diversity of wildlife, it is one of the last remaining sites of the working willow holts, an ancient feature of many Trent-side villages, where the willow is famously used for making cricket bats and basket weaving. On this walk you will notice clapper gates, they are a very distinctive self-closing double gate, which are unique to North Nottinghamshire’s River Trent. They were established in the 18th Century to allow access, to neighbouring fields along the riverbank. The self-closing mechanism was to stop livestock from escaping and wandering off. This enticing walk extends along the River Trent, offering a slice of peace and tranquillity, and delivering many tempting diversions along the way. If you like boats, then you’re in for a treat. Farndon Marina is without doubt one of the most picturesque settings on the River Trent and attracts visitors and boating enthusiasts from all over the United Kingdom, it’s fascinating watching the boats cruising along the river, and this walk offers the opportunity to do just that! The marina was created in World War 2 by extracting aggregates and sand, which were then used to help build the Nottinghamshire airfields. Our adventure takes us on a journey in and around the splendid market town of Newark, which nestles beautifully along the banks
92
of the mighty River Trent; its significance being principal to the industrial growth and expansion of the town. Newark became an important inland port; ironworks, engineering, brewing and a wellknown sugar industry flourished. As you walk along, the riverside buildings are a reminder of that bygone era, you can’t help but notice the splendid examples of urban regeneration; stylish bars, restaurants and housing. Newark town is brimming with so many interesting buildings, the architecture quite beautifully eclectic, its diversity is showcased in the market place, which is dominated by the splendid Georgian town hall; you can explore the narrow alleyways and small cobbled roads, take a journey back in time, embracing a wealth of history and heritage as you discover something new around every corner. If you like shopping or just to simply browse, the Royal Markets are held in the square every Wednesday and Saturday selling a huge variety of wares; from fresh fruit and vegetables to artisan foods, gifts and clothing. It must be one of the most attractive markets around and draws in visitors from all over the country. Before your return walk back to Farndon, why not enjoy a tasty treat in one of the many splendid eateries, bars, restaurants and cafés. or if you prefer ‘alfresco’ take advantage of the beautiful green space around the castle area, It’s the perfect place to take a picnic and watch the world go by; and if you have extra time on your hands, why not extend your visit with an overnight stay. Visit the Civil War Centre, take a trip to the theatre, attend one of the many outdoor events which occur throughout the year, such as music concerts, plays and re-enactments. Whatever you decide, a very warm welcome awaits. Happy ramblings!

Continue along the narrow path,
keeping the river to your left until you reach a clapper gate. 7. Pass through the clapper gate, and walk along the grassy trail, passing meadows to your right. Continue along, you will see a disused mill, and buildings in the distance ahead of you. After a short distance, the path veers slightly to the right, you will see another clapper gate and a bridge over the river to your left. Pass through the clapper gate. 8. After the gate, you will see a wooden fence with a sign which says, ‘Private Land’, but there is public access, so please keep to the path. Proceed over the grassy path, heading towards the left corner and the old windmill. 9. At the windmill you will see a fingerpost, to your right, continue straight on following the river path and pass through a gate. Proceed along the wide surfaced path and walk under the large concrete bridge which carries the A46 bypass.* 10. Follow the path as it veers round passing several buildings to your right, the pathway becomes a single track which passes a row of residential houses, please be respectful of the environment. As you walk along the track, notice the super views over

Continue to walk along Mill Gate until you reach the junction with Mill Lane, here, you turn left and walk through a residential area to the bridge. 16. Cross over the bridge and turn right to walk along the fabulous castle and riverside area. Follow the path by the river and head towards the castle; at the white bridge or walkway, you can cross over to the opposite bank at this point, and explore the town from there, retracing your steps to point (10)* for the return route. 17. Alternatively, you can continue along the river path, turning left over the green footbridge, emerging onto the Riverside Park, the perfect spot for a picnic by the river! From here you can explore the superb town of Newark at your leisure, maybe follow one of the many historical town trails, visit the delightful cobbled market square, visit the Civil War Centre or simply relax in the castle grounds and watch the world go by! There are plenty of fantastic places to eat and drink too, you won’t be disappointed! Retrace your steps for your return walk to route point (9) * At the fingerpost, here, turn left and continue to walk along the narrow public pathway, which passes the
mill and a row of cottages. You will come to another fingerpost. Continue straight along the narrow treelined pathway until you reach its end, where it merges onto a road, which is Marsh Lane. 18. Passing paddocks to your right, and residential housing, proceed along the footpath until you reach a mini roundabout. At the roundabout, turn right onto Long Lane, and continue to walk along, passing Walters Close on the left, continuing straight ahead onto the unsurfaced track. 19. After a short distance, turn left at the junction following the wide track, keeping the hedge to your left and fields to your right, until you reach the corner, where you will see a metal gate. At the corner there is a small kissing gate to the left, and a marker post. Go through the kissing gate and continue along the grassy track through Farndon Meadows. At the end of the track you will see another small metal kissing gate. Proceed through the gate following a narrow pathway until you reach two rows of garages, where you emerge onto a road through a gap in a brick wall. 20. Once through the gap, turn right onto the footpath and after a short distance, almost immediately, turn left, crossing the road with caution, onto a grassy track. You will see directional signage to the right in the trees. 21. This path takes you through another meadow, following the path back to the picnic area and river where you began this delightful walk.

Maserati launch Made was invited along to a special preview of the new Maserati Levante Trofeo at their Graypaul Nottingham showroom recently. The evening, which came ahead of the official launch, saw canapÊs and drinks served ahead of the big reveal of this new sports SUV – a vehicle that is the perfect blend of performance, luxury and practicality. The showroom was then brought to life, as those invited along got to see, hear and smell the car close up. That distinct engine rumble that only the Maserati could generate, filled the showroom.

Leisure
North Notts People There are so many individuals across our region that making it wonderful place it is for us all to enjoy. We'll be meeting some of our locals to ask a few questions to get to know our fantastic North Notts people better. In this issue we meet Stephen Booth, a former journalist who works from his home in rural Notts. With over 19 crime thrillers, with the new one 'Drowned Lives' released in August this year. His work has seen him listed for the CWA Dagger awards in the UK four times, he has won the Dagger in The Library award and overseas in the USA he has twice won the Crime Novel of the year.
What is your earliest childhood memory? I only remember brief, vivid images. The earliest is of crossing a road with my mother, and my older brother crying because a wasp had landed on him. I can’t have been more than three. The next memory is my second day at primary school (not the first day, though apparently I hated it).
Which three words best describe you? Enquiring. Quiet. Reflective.
What was the last book you read?
Readers. I get a lot of messages from readers, but occasionally one writes to tell me that reading my books has changed their life or helped them through a difficult time. That makes everything worthwhile.
If you could have any job in the world, what would it be and why? I already have the job I dreamed of doing from the age of 12, and I wouldn’t swap it for anything else.
What is your favourite place to eat in the area and why?
‘29 Seconds’ by T.M. Logan. He’s a terrific Nottinghamshire writer of psychological thrillers who was on a panel I chaired at a book festival recently.
The Old Plough at Egmanton. Good food, nice surroundings.
What is your favourite film?
A trip out into the Peak District, but somewhere away from the crowds.
‘Bladerunner’ (the original version with Harrison Ford).
What is the best gift you've ever received? A manual typewriter my parents bought me when I was about 14. It launched my professional writing career.
What skill would you like to master? I’ve starting learning to play guitar. I left it pretty late in life, so it’s a challenge!
What annoys you? Hypocrisy.
98
What makes you happy?
What is your favourite way to spend a weekend?
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you? I was once a director of an artificial insemination company. Management role only!
If you could go back in time, who would you visit and why? I’d go back less than 20 years to visit Douglas Adams. Such a clever, funny, visionary man that I was sorry never to meet him. Ironically, I was asked to sign some copies of ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ after he died.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Being able to fly. Doesn’t everyone say that?
What is the farthest you have been from home? An Australian book tour. So either Sydney or Melbourne.
What should every person try at least once in their life? Haggis!
Who has been your greatest inspiration? Mrs Parkinson – a teacher who used to read books to us at primary school. It was the last lesson of the week on a Friday, and I always went away inspired.
What is the best advice you've been given? - Did you take it? ‘Write what you know’ is common advice writers are given - and it’s nonsense.
What are you most looking forward to in life? I always look forward to getting the next idea down on paper, and there are still lots of them waiting for me to write.
