Foz da Ribeira da Janela

Este é o mais extenso e abundante curso de água formado no interior da ilha, no meio das montanhas e que desagua no oceano, é a chamada Ribeira da Janela. Este nome é proveniente de um pequeno ilhéu que se levanta na proximidade da foz desta ribeira e, que no seu cimo, apresenta uma saliência natural que faz lembrar uma janela.

Na verdade, contam-se ali três rochedos que se erguem no mar e que tornam o cenário absolutamente encantador: os Ilhéus da Rama, Ilhéu Alto e o Ilheuzinho.

Destes 3 ilhéus, o mais famoso tanto pela sua morfologia como pela sua história é o Ilhéu Alto, também conhecido como Ilhéu Comprido. Situa-se entre os outros dois ilhéus e tem cerca de 40 metros de altura, perto do cimo tem uma pequena abertura que se assemelha a uma janela. Foi a partir desta particularidade que a freguesia da Ribeira da Janela foi assim batizada.

O Ilhéu da Rama ou da Ruama, fica a cerca de 200 metros da costa, sendo o maior e aquele que apresenta alguma vegetação. Quanto ao Ilheuzinho, como o próprio nome indica, é o mais pequeno e é semelhante a um rochedo que fica mesmo junto à costa.

A Ribeira da Janela foi uma das localidades que serviu de palco para as gravações de Star Wars, que aconteceram em março de 2023. As paisagens soberbas da ilha da Madeira foram eleitas, pela primeira vez, para participar nesta saga de renome, que privilégio!

This is the longest and most abundant watercourse in Madeira. It is formed deep in the interior of the island, between the mountains and flows into the ocean. It was baptised “Ribeira da Janela” (window stream) which comes from the small islet that rises near the mouth of the river and has a natural window-like protrusion at the top.

In fact, there are three rocks that rise up from the sea and make the scenery absolutely enchanting: the Ilhéus da Rama, Ilhéu Alto and Ilheuzinho.

Of these 3 islets, the most famous both for its morphology and its history is the Ilhéu Alto, also known as the Ilhéu Comprido. It is located between the other two islets and is about 40 metres high, near the top it has a small opening that looks like a window. It was from this particularity that the parish of Ribeira da Janela was so named.

The Ilhéu da Rama or Ruama is about 200 metres from the coast, the largest and the one with some vegetation. As for Ilheuzinho, as its name indicates, it is the smallest and is similar to a rock that lies near the coast.

Ribeira da Janela was one of the locations that served as a stage for the recording of Star Wars, which took place in March 2023. The superb landscapes of the island were chosen, for the first time, to participate in this renowned saga, what a privilege!
