Igreja Matriz do Espirito Santo, Calheta

A freguesia da Calheta teve a sua primitiva sede na capela de Nossa Senhora da Estrela, porém afirma-se que ali não permaneceu por largos anos, procedendo-se então à construção de uma nova igreja, cujo ano se desconhece. O seu orago passou a ser o Espírito Santo.

É de referenciar o teto da capelamor e da nave central em estilo mudejar, para além de um valioso conjunto de ourivesaria sacra desde o séc. XVI até ao séc. XVIII (lampadários, pia batismal, cruz processional, um pia e dois volantes flamengos que representam a Anunciação, e que se encontram no Museu de Arte Sacra).

Esta Igreja conserva ainda um sacrário talhado em ébano com primorosas incrustações de prata, oferta de D. Manuel I, o Venturoso (peça original no património da Ilha).

Uma pedra no púlpito tem a data de 1639, data em que a Igreja foi totalmente reconstruída.

Espírito Santo Parish Church Calheta

The parish of Calheta was originally established in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Estrela, but it is said that it did not remain there for many yearsonce a new church was built. The patron saint changed to Holy Spirit.

It is worth mentioning the Mudejar ceiling of the chancel and the central nave, as well as a valuable set of sacred jewellery from the 16th to the 18th century (lamps, baptismal font, processional cross, a font and two Flemish steering wheels representing the Annunciation, which can be found in the Museum of Sacred Art).

This church still conserves a tabernacle carved in ebony with exquisite silver inlays, a gift from D. Manuel I, the Fortunate (original piece in the patrimony of the Island).

A stone in the pulpit bears the date 1639, when the church was totally rebuilt.
