SUZANNE ANDERSON How do I love thee many uses for Vintage Tea Cups, let me count the ways? Whether it’s the lure of getting together with a group of girlfriends for an old fashioned High Tea Party, or just the desire to drink out of a dainty vintage teacup, they are proving to be as popular as ever. I must confess it’s getting harder and harder to source really beautiful vintage teacups. Aside from being a vessel for the perfect cup of tea, there are so many uses for a teacup. The beautiful line from Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s sonnet, “How much do I love thee let me count the ways”, inspired me to think of the many and varied ways to use a vintage teacup: • To serve a lovely cup of tea! • Plant succulents, or herbs in. Teacups with chips or small hairline cracks are just perfect for this. It’s also quite OK to be a black thumb as succulents are very hard to kill.
• As a vase for a table decoration. Teacups can also be used as a vase for fresh herbs like rosemary. Herbs are very long lasting and give a lovely
homely scent. Likewise small floral arrangements placed in a teacup vase look just darling on a bridal, christening or high tea table. • To make an interesting top to a cake stand. The tea cup can then be used to put flowers in, small teaspoons, or cake forks, sweets etc. • As a bespoke container for a soy candle. If these are grouped together they make a lovely table decoration or for a romantic night in, can provide subtle light. Or give as an individual gift to your best friend, your child’s teacher or mother-in-law. It’s a gift that gives twice as at the end of the candles life the teacup can be cleaned out and re-used once again as a gorgeous teacup. Likewise it could be refilled as a candle. • As a bird bath. For instance, take a cut glass vase and place it upside down, glue a side plate or cup and saucer on top. This can make a beautiful decoration for the garden. Water (or bird seed) can be used to fill the cup and help water/ feed the native birds. • Use as a portable bird feeder. Small demi cups can simply be strung up outside on a tree or a bush with some pretty ribbon or craft twine. Again put in some feed and you have a very simple bird feeder. Just perfect for small cups with either a chip or a hairline. • Pendant lights, or table lamps. Drill a teacup and saucer with a diamond tipped drill, then fix with a light fitting and hang from a silk cord, or fix to an ornate downward standard lamp.
• Ornamental table decoration. Simply stack some china, plates, saucers, sugar dishes, and a teacup and you can make an amazing table centerpiece. If you want this to be permanent then glue the pieces together. Likewise a simple cake stand can be made this way. Use upside down teacups as the separators between each plate. This is also simple if you don’t have the desire to drill and fix pieces together with handles. • A mini cupcake or biscuit stand. Literally turn a teacup upside down and place the saucer on top. Then place your prettiest cake, biscuits, or macrons on and this will add a little bit of styling to your table.
• Jewellery container/ somewhere to store your pretties. Put your hanging earrings around the rim of the cup, or necklaces in the middle. A lovely cup looks pretty on a bedside table. • Serve desert in. They make the prettiest containers for chocolate pudding or a summer berry pudding/ trifle for one. Teacups can be used for microwavable or oven baked decedent chocolate puddings. Just keep in mind no gilt trimmed teacups in the microwave, as sparks will fly! Obviously any mix can be spread across a number of cups for a dinner party. So a six-person tea set could be perfect, or a mismatched shabby set could be equally delightful.
• Pincushion. The base of the cup is decorative, use stuffing so that it’s higher than the cup and rounded. Place fabric to seal and glue inside the edge of the cup. Perfect for pins. • For sorting things. Put your bits and bobs into a pretty vintage tea cup and you have a beautiful place to store things instead of bits lying about the place or hiding them away. For instance a sewer could use cups to sort cotton reels, sewing accessories, vintage buttons, and a crafter could use cups for findings, mosaics, the list is endless. • Girls Night! Get the girls together for a super stylish girl’s night in. Yes get out your best linen, lay out the table with beautiful china, cake stands and silver ware. Get out your prettiest champagne flutes and alternate cups of tea, a little champagne, or a lot depending on how you feel, or maybe a drop of Pims and lots of lovely cakes and savouries. Last but not least, if one teacup is completely broken, there’s no need to throw it away. It can still be used for the prettiest mosaic tiles, or the pretty floral pieces can be up cycled into jewellery, for instance, earrings, brooches or the centerpiece of a necklace. Reusing vintage teacups is also a fantastic way to be kind to the environment, as the pieces already exist. It also means that if your vintage cups are hidden at the back of a dusty cupboard (either yours or grandmas) then you can get them out again and make sure they are put to good use. SHELLEY HUSBAND - AVID CROCHET DESIGNER. It’s beginning to dawn on me that Christmas is not too far away. So I thought a bit of decorating fun might spur me on to be a bit more organised. These are so easy and quick to do. They only take about 5 minutes to make. Great for embelishing presents, bottles, cards, trees – anything really. They even have a handy hanging thread so you really can just crochet then decorate. OK so, here we go. The pattern is written in UK terms. If you prefer US terms, use the table below to see the equivalent stitches. Here are the stitches you’ll need to know. If any are unfamiliar, look them up on my Spincushions Crochet Channel on YouTube. UK Terms st ch = starting chain ch = chain dc = double crochet htr = half treble crochet tr = treble crochet hdtr = half double treble crochet

US Terms st ch = starting chain ch = chain sc = single crochet hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet htr = half triple crochet
Begin with a magic circle. ch 3, (st ch), 14 tr – do NOT join with ss, but join with a dc instead.
In the next bit, we will be working into ch stitches. Check out the picture below to see where to insert your hook for the best results in this pattern. You need to have 2 loops above and one below your hook.

Repeat steps 2 & 3, 4 more times, but leave off the last dc/sc and join with a ss to your first st instead.

Leaving a long tail, cut yarn. Weave in centre tail. Thread the long finishing tail through the backs of the stitches of a star ray until it emerges from the tip of your star and voila! A star ready to hang.
