The misalignments between African and European influences in the African American culture clearly show in music. The same dissonance can also be found in architecture, between the European housing typologies spread all over the US and what can be called the « Black space ». The objective of this project is to highlight and claim this dissonance through the renovation of the

«Experimentation» Space

American Foursquare typology by creating new experimentation space for Black culture to be expressed. The new typology is made of a double dissonance: from the outside, the dissonance appears on the additional third floor, that looks like it slid from the existing house; but from the inside, the dissonance is created by the new use of the front space of the house.

Over the past decades, the population’s accelerated aging rate has become a major issue in the world. This important demographic shift has a significant impact on the architectural profession; in fact, housing is today one of the key issues for senior citizens. The objective of this project is to develop an inclusive environment for older people with various needs and abilities to

age within the city, while also maintaining and enhancing their relationships with the exterior. The main focus of this project, located in a Parisian suburb, is an eighty-beds seniors residence, divided into 3 different types of accommodation based on the level of autonomy of the inhabitants: a nursing home unit, an Alzheimer’s special care unit and an independent living unit.

The facade system offers large openings onto exterior balconies and allows for different levels of shading based on the residents’ needs

This innovative system is used in different versions throughout the whole project to reinforce the sense of community on the site

THE RIGHT ANGLE

Since the destruction of the Riverfront YMCA building in Des Moines in 2015, a battle over what to do with the site started between the city and the feds. Indeed, if the city wants the site to be used for private development, the feds would like to use it to implant the new courthouse. The objective of this project is to combine both ideas and provide on the same site a courthouse,as well as

housing and commercial spaces, while creating a welcoming public space that translates the symbolic meaning of the site. In order to answer to one of the city’s unusual characteristics, the landscape plan and building forms are aligned along the 15 degree difference in the two Des Moines grids: the old grid that aligns with the river, and the Jeffersonian North - South grid.

Vitry-sur-Seine, located in the suburbs of Paris, is a very important city in the development and extension of the French capital, as it contributes to the Grand Paris project. Indeed, work is underway in Vitry-sur-Seine to create two new underground stations for the « Grand Paris Express » which is a project of public transportation for Paris and its suburbs.

3. The market square

The project is concentrated in the center of the town, around the future « Vitry Centre » underground station. The objective is to establish social links by creating a succession of public spaces from the future station to the market square, a very important place for Vitry’s inhabitants. Three squares are created to redefine the city center for pedestrians, and make the town more attractive.

This project is a 400 students middle school, located in Ivry-sur-Seine, a southern suburb of Paris. The site is located along the Parisian ring-road expressway, one of the busiest and the loudest expressways in Europe, and has a very atypical topography and position, at the intersection of very different areas of the city. Thus, the objective for this project is twofold: first,

to create a positive learning environment for the students, protected against the noise and the pollution generated by the expressway, but also to use the surrounding urban heterogeneity to create a middle school opened onto the city and its diversity, in order to connect students with the exterior, and more broadly, encourage them to discover the world.

Abstract

In the U.S., individuals over the age of 50 make up for more than 20% of the pris-

on population. While the number of incarcerated individuals has been constantly decreasing since 1995, the older population has been exponentially increasing and the proportion of individuals incarcerated with a lifetime sentence is today at its highest. These demographic shifts are not without consequences: rehabilitation, one of the universally accepted role of modern prisons, is not a likely outcome anymore for a good part of the incarcerated population, who will most likely die in prison and never re-enter society.

Life in prison is hard for anyone, and the correctional system is definitely not built

to meet aging individuals’ physiological and psychological needs. So what does it mean to be an older person in prison today? This thesis explores the many challenges older incarcerated individuals face when aging in prison and questions the impact that prison architecture can have on their quality of life, in terms of accessibility, safety, health promotion, and general well-being.

Using both a review of the existing literature and a case study approach to gath-

er archival information and new qualitative data, this study provides a written and visual critique of the environmental conditions in which older incarcerated individuals are serving their time in U.S. prisons today. Based on the information obtained through the case study of two New York State maximum-security prisons, this thesis also makes recommendations for the design of more appropriate facilities in an attempt to provide humane environments for those who are currently incarcerated.
