Hello! My name is Madeleine Cheung.

I am currently a second-year undergraduate architecture student studying at the University of Waterloo seeking a four month co-op placement from January to April 2025

I am interested in creating intimate architecture that responds to and interacts with life--whether in its most natural or social context.

The influence of architectural representation and the ways that both physical and digital media work to convey space, character, and function is something that I am fascinated by and consider fundamental to the work I produce. I am also passionate about diverse representation in architecture and what it means to experience a space as someone who was not considered in its design process.

I look forward to expanding my passion and curiosity for architecture and design by contributing to the success of your team.

Madeleine Cheung

Recommendation Letter for Maddy Cheung

To Whom it May Concern:

This letter is my personal recommendation for Maddy Cheung. I can attest to her merits as an intern and outstanding collaborator through Þrst-hand collaboration.

This past summer, I have been Maddy’s mentor during her very Þrst internship at my atelier. I found her to be consistently pleasant and hardworking, tackling all the assignments and tasks with dedication and a smile. Besides being a joy to work with, Maddy is a take-charge person who is able to absorb ideas, elaborate them and then present and communicate the projects in a timely manner.

I highly recommend Maddy for Co-op employment. I am conÞdent that she will use the opportunity wisely and will greatly beneÞt from it. I am also certain that her presence would make a great addition to any architecture and design Þrm. And I implore you grant her the opportunity — you will not be disappointed.

If you have any further questions or require more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me via an email: info@rzlbd.com

Sincerely, RZLBD (Reza Aliabadi)

sweep house

fall 2023

location : cambridge, ontario

type : communal housing

supervisor : fiona lim tung

located in riverbluffs park in cambridge, ontario, sweep house is a community shelter space which provides accomodation for a gardener and room for an additional guest. hidden inset a deep quarry, the structure takes after its natural surroundings-- a wooden roof sweeps sharply downwards as does the steep cliff defining the quarry.

the shelter serves as a bridge between community and their produce; where direct access to the garden is provided via an elevator where food is gathered and stored. fresh produce is transported directly to the kitchen. in this way, learning is fostered by growing, cooking, eating, and connecting with one another.

expanding in is a pedestrian bridge intended to encourage its users to pause and take notice of their surroundings. taking the place of a previously deteriorated wooden bridge, this walkway follows in its footsteps and is made primarily from white oak timber to integrate naturally with the forest setting surrounding it. approaching the bridge, occupants are

encouraged to migrate towards the center as the bridge’s path expands horizontally while the canopy dips inward vertically. the simultaneous horizontal expansion and vertical compression emphasize the appeal of the center of the bridge. here, a small waterfall is revealed from behind the thin wooden balusters and streams underneath the path.

urban pocket home

spring 2024

in collaboration with kiran bentley

location : bengaluru, india

type : off-grid residence

supervisor : anna beznogova

course : arch 126 environmental building design

media : rhino 3D, v-ray, ai, ps

located in bengaluru, india, urban pocket home is a residence for artists in a tight-knit neighbourhood. the home runs without primary reliance on mechanical systems such as air conditioning, heating, and city-operated plumbing systems. the residence uses cross and stack ventilation strategies and features horizontal pivot windows to maximize the amount of

effective ventilation. paying attention to sun direction and precipitation patterns, the home runs on electricity provided by solar power and solar hot-water heating, and it collects and filters its own rainwater. materials such as stone and concrete are used to effectively make use of their thermal mass--storing heat during the day and releasing it in the cool night time.

rainwater on the roof travels into the rain gutter and down the eavestrough. the rainwater is then stored in a tank and subsequently moved into the pump. after being filtered, it is sanitized and distributed throughout the residence.

sunlight is absorbed by photovoltaic panels on the roof which convert it into energy that is stored in a battery. sunlight can also be absorbed for solar hot water heating which powers the hot water heater. energy and hot water are distributed.

nook library

spring 2024

location : cambridge, ontario

type : library

supervisor : linda zhang

course : arch 193 design studio

media : rhino 3D, v-ray, ai, ps, graphite

nook library is a proposal for a new library in cambridge, ontario. the form aims to create various nooks in the exterior form of courtyards and alleyways as well as in the interior form of quiet reading and community spaces. in an attempt to revitalize the social community in cambridge, the library makes use of all aspects of the site it sits on in order to bring people

together. arts and crafts events hosted by the library encourage creativity and liveliness within the city and further connect students, adolescents, seniors, as well as adults. the frequent usage of accordion doors within the structure blur the barrier between outside and inside, allowing for both privacy and connection depending on the circumstance.
