PLUS: Road tripping in the new Audi A7 / In conversation with ACP Pankhuri Kumar / India's gorgeous trekking trails

Dear Resident, It is time to welcome a new dawn. The old year has changed yielding place to the new and while we look back at everything we accomplished in 2017, we have now approached the moment where we shift gears and start moving forward in our quest for realising new hopes, dreams and horizons. 2017 was a very significant year for all of us at DLF5. We achieved a lot and that means we will need to move the goal posts further and set bigger milestones for ourselves in 2018. The cover feature of this edition sits in perfectly within that context. There is no bigger asset that all of us can acquire than good health. It is perhaps the single most significant lynchpin around which everything else revolves. To eat right, sleep well and be healthy is an agenda no one can ignore, particularly if we want to go out and get things done. Speaking of people that are getting things done, I am sure our interview with ACP (Traffic) Pankhuri Kumar will prove to be of great interest to our readers. The officer, in an exclusive conversation with High5, spoke of all the initiatives Gurugram Police has taken up to ensure that the Millennium City is a safe haven for women. ACP Kumar also outlined the importance of technology and CCTV surveillance in maintaining law and order and was appreciative of the fact that all of DLF5 is now under CCTV monitoring. We are also happy to inform our readers that an office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police was inaugurated in DLF5 recently, which will go a long way in ensuring that we live up to our credo of DLF5 being the ideal place to live, work and play. Further on in the edition, we bring you the most extraordinarily beautiful treks in our country. It ties in with our theme of maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle and also gives us a glimpse into the sheer diversity that makes up our great nation. There is a lot more in these pages and with everything from music to literature to sports, this edition of High5 forms the perfect backdrop to our efforts in making this year even better than the one that preceded it. A very warm welcome to 2018 and wishing you the best of everything in the New Year. Best Wishes!

Elixir of life

Our breath is our essence of life. Breathe to be in the moment, listen to your inner self and conquer the vicissitudes of life

Alternate nostril breathing Also known as Nadi Shodhana, this technique has been a favourite with the yogis. It is meant to bring calm, balance, and unite the right and left sides of the brain. To complete the breath, start in a comfortable position, and then hold your right thumb over your right nostril while inhaling deeply through the left. Once you have fully inhaled, close your left nostril and then release the right, allowing your breath to exhale through the other side. It is useful to add this technique to your morning routine. It not only helps to begin your day on a stress free mode it also makes you feel wide awake and ready to take on the world.

8

G

lobal spiritual leader and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh says “Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again. We enlist some useful breathing techniques that will help you destress and augur well for you.

Firebreath You can kickstart your day with firebreath or breath of fire. It is a foundational breathing technique of Kundalini yoga practice and is aimed at expanding lung capacity, flushing out toxins, and increasing strength. Begin by sitting in a position that would not block your ability to take full breaths. Then you pant like a dog. Begin panting with an open mouth and then through your nostrils with mouth closed. This technique makes you feel greatly energised.

Equal breathing Known by the name of Sama Vritti in the realm of yoga, this is another breathing exercise you can try anytime, anywhere. All you need to do is inhale for a count of four, and then exhale for four, all through the nose. Experts say breathing through the nose adds a natural resistance to your breath, causing you to slow down and focus. While it is a great way to relax during the day, it is also an effective technique before going to bed. If your mind is racing, count your breaths and stay in control.

Abdominal breathing technique You may have begun your day with some great breathing work, but it might not be enough to combat all the stressors you encounter later in the day. That is where a few more subtle breathing exercises come in. Try abdominal breathing, for example. All you have to do is place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Then, take a deep breath through your nose and make sure your diaphragm (not chest) fills with air. It may seem unnatural to let your belly fill up like a balloon. However, abdominal breathing is actually the healthiest way to breathe. Keeping that idea in mind, this one is probably the most important exercise on our list. Taking 10 minutes to focus on this breath every day will help retrain your quality of breath, which helps improve your general day-to-day stress levels and health. It is also the perfect way to relieve one’s anxiety right before a big presentation or meeting.

The 4-7-8 technique One breathing exercise that urban dwellers can swear by is the “4-7-8” technique, which is supposed to help you go to sleep in less than a minute. This technique involves certain steps, which are in the following order. a) Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. b) Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose, while counting till four. C) Hold your breath for seven seconds; and finally; d) Exhale all your air through your mouth, making another whoosh sound while counting to eight. All these steps count as one breath. Now inhale again and repeat all the steps (1-4) three more times for a total of four complete breaths.

American novelist and author of A Lion Among Men Gregory Maguire sums up the significance of breathing, when he says, “Remember to breathe. It is after all, the secret of life.”

rrespective of whether we are aware of it or not, we go through our lives engaged in a process of creation. Moments, memories, magic, our conscious or subconscious actions coalesce into a whole that is larger than the sum of its parts and evocatively representative of who we are as people, as professionals and as family. It can be stated with a reasonable degree of certainty that amongst the physical manifestations of our beings, it is our homes that are perhaps the truest representations of who we are. That is one of the reasons why British author George A. Moore remarks, “A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” Our homes define us. They are the sanctuary we seek and they are the grand artistic expression we strive to create. At Bunty and Nini Agarwal’s home at The Magnolias, this expression is bold, detailed and encompasses several worlds within its walls. It is also genial, warm and imbued with a wry sense of humour. To illustrate the point, let us leap forward a

little into the narrative where the master of the home, while explaining his wife’s love of everything vintage, suddenly quips, “She likes everything that is of a certain vintage. That is how I made the cut.” Subtle and brilliant. Coming back to the point where we met our host at the front door, the foyer of the Agarwal home is a study in itself. As a starting point to what is inside, this area is a perfect encapsulation. There is a mirrored, high-backed seat on the left and a full figure of a Buddha in bronze. An abundance of purple and white flowers create a welcoming ambience, which is reflected and multiplied manifold in a big mirror within an ornate bronze frame. A seated Buddha occupies pride of place on the mirror’s left. Mirrors and Buddhas, a recurrent motif through the incredibly ornate home which features more detail than your eye can take in at once. The Agarwal residence is a place where continents and cultures rub shoulders with each other and it is possible to step away from an installation that is intrinsically Indian

only to be faced by Chinese influences which further give way to objets d’art that are very British. The entrance is framed by two musicians on the doorway which is significant because it alludes to the songs of life. As we step in, there is a three-part portrait of a Gujarati family that transports us back in time immediately. It is reminiscent of an era where people would take great pride in dressing up for a family picture, which used to be quite an occasion by itself. Mobile phone photography has, of course, altered that particular landscape rather drastically, but it was wonderful while it lasted.

The portrait is protected by a bird that has a definite warrior-like demeanour. “Garuda? We hazard a guess and are gratified when the response is an affirmative. In fact, figures from Indian mythology interpreted in a distinctly oriental idiom are one of the highlights of the front portion of the Agarwal residence. There is a stunning statue of Krishna opposite to where Garuda stands guard. It is remarkable because

it does not resemble the likeness of Krishna we have all grown up watching and yet, somehow, you instinctively know it is the Vishnu avatar. “You see, the Gods are the same across certain regions,” says Nini Agarwal, an entrepreneur who had a flourishing garments export business, which he has now wound down considerably. “That is why you can sense it is Krishna even though the artistic sensibility is very different in this rendition.” “We moved here from our farmhouse some eight or nine months ago,” says Bunty, the lady of the house. “And while we have a lot of stuff that had to be installed, I had a definite plan of how I wanted our new home to look and that is the reason why I was able to get it up and running in three days.”

It is a microcosm of disparate worlds that works in conjunction to create a vibe which stamps the Agarwal home with its unique identity That plan now unfolds itself as we make our way further inside the apartment. It is a microcosm of disparate worlds that somehow works in conjunction to create a vibe which stamps the Agarwal home with its unique identity. There is, for instance, an entire wall behind the dining area which has been taken over by what appears to be the façade of a Southern Indian home. “Bunty saw this when we were in Kerala,” reminisces Nini. “She fell in love with it and we knew

we had to get it. It was shipped in about 2000 pieces and we put it together using a manual that was sent to us.” To the right of this imposing façade is a pantry which features Chinese and British pottery and then on to a kitchen where spanking modern-day refrigerators stand alongside classic Coca Cola iceboxes and Texas flour bins. “We have acquired a lot of this stuff over the course of the last 40-odd years,” says Nini. “It is great that Bunty is an interior designer because

she has found very creative ways to put everything together in such a way that it all blends seamlessly with each other.” The gorgeous balcony is a case in point. The fact that it features breathtaking views of the lush DLF Golf Course down below is, of course, an unparalleled advantage but equally significant is what the Agarwals have done with the space. There are magnificent busts of Zeus, Socrates and Bacchus all along the periphery in addition to a pair of young Buddhist monks pictured in a forever-smiling Zen-like state. “I call them my Ram-Lakhan,” laughs Bunty and in doing so displays the consummate ease with which she can bring the world together inside her home.

The wellness principle In many ways we are what we eat and the fundamental science of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to inculcate a habit of eating sensibly By KAnika Sandal

ith the beginning of every new year, we are ushered with enthusiasm and energy to get fit and healthy. While getting fit is a wonderful state to aspire to, it is certainly not an overnight phenomenon. There seems to be absolutely no debate about the importance of physical fitness at this time, but it is necessary to realise that it is a goal that is easier stated than achieved. More importantly, a lot of us overlook and disregard the importance of food in our journey to get fit. There are so many people getting wrong advices like take that pill, sweat for two or three hours and drink green tea. There are a number of things that are working around, and people are falling into the trap. Burning calories does not necessarily require intensive exercise. One can swim, go biking, hula-hooping, gardening or other leisurely activities that not only take you a step closer to fitness but also help in relaxation. Along with these activities, it is necessary that our eating habits also evolve. Eating healthy, for starters does not absolutely mean over-indulging in green teas, starving or depriving yourself

Eating healthy does not mean overindulging in green teas, starving or depriving yourself from the food that you relish the most

from the food that you relish the most. Rather, it simply means getting enough vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients – and limiting unhealthy foods and drinks. Healthy eating is concerned more with counting what you are eating and how you are eating, like the number of calories that are right for you. The cornerstone of a healthy diet pattern should simply be to replace processed food with real food whenever possible. Eating food that is as close as possible to the way nature made it can make a huge difference to the way you think, look, and feel. Nutrition experts dole out a ton of advice about how to eat well—and, most importantly, not lose your mind doing it. The whole science is about eating more of the best and healthiest options in each of the food groups—and eating less of the not-so-healthy ones. That means you need to embrace whole foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains, plus healthy proteins and fats. It also means cutting back on refined grains, pesticides, additives, preservatives, unhealthy fats and large amounts of sugar and salt. It is quite easy to get sucked into the lure of the restaurant menu when you are hungry, and everything looks good. You do not have to necessarily order the plain grilled chicken salad because let us admit it, that would be boring. Order what you like, but balance the meal out with the rest of the day. If you are eating a heavy lunch, then make sure your next two meals are light. Nutritionists and dietitians would always suggest you to eat more vegetables, so cook

Your biggest meal should be around noon when your digestion is at its peak and you can feed your body when it actually needs fuel them in a way that takes them from hohum to yum-yum. Do not eat boring food, rather always incorporate high-flavour add-ons to jazz up your vegetables, like sautĂŠing them with olive oil and garlic, or throwing them in an oven with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. That way, you would not have to equate "healthy" with "tasteless," a mindset that will knock you off the veggie bandwagon faster.

rich in unsaturated fat instead, such as vegetable oils (including sunflower, rapeseed and olive oil), oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds. Try to eat these sorts of foods less often or in small amounts. For a healthy choice, use just a small amount of vegetable oil or a reduced-fat spread instead of butter, lard or ghee. And when you are having meat, try to choose lean cuts and cut off any visible fat.

Try to cut down on food that is high in saturated fat and have foods that are

the biggest meal of our day, but in the morning a lot of us may not feel that hungry when we wake up. In fact, your biggest meal should be around noon when your digestion is at its peak and you can feed your body when it actually needs fuel, hence, eat lunch like a king. At lunch, concentrate on your proteins, lentils and greens. Eating healthy should feel like a habit and not like an obligation that is too hard to maintain and takes a toll on you. Even if you only take a few steps toward eating cleaner—cutting back on processed foods, for example, eating more fruits and veggies it can still make an impact on your health. So get going on your health journey!

hat goes inside our body is far more important from what goes on our body. So, it is sensible to pay some more attention to the food that we eat than the clothes we wear. The way we plan our clothes for the next day at work is the same way we should plan our food. Thanks to the awareness created by media, health magazines, and camps people are taking their health much seriously than ever before. Nutritionists and dietitians are just not referred for weight loss management any more. Today problems like PCOD, blood pressure, cholesterol, post-delivery weight loss, medical problems, all get resolved through correct eating and that is what diet is all about – Eating correct! People have become much more aware of their body and “well-th management” In today’s fast lifestyle, it is worse to postpone our meals and feed ourselves when the hunger strikes because we are not only slowing down our BMR but also we will surely end up eating more and most probably junk. So, we should plan our meals and have them on time. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants

Consuming foods rich in antioxidants will be good for our heart’s health and may also help to lower our risk of infections

www.dlf 5 .in

cover story

will be good for our heart’s health and may also help to lower your risk of infections. Increase the antioxidant intake by eating more nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. Some of the best known antioxidant-rich food items include berries, grapes, apricots, green tea, nuts, legumes, corn, spinach, citrus fruits, apples, kiwi fruit, whole grains, milk, coffee, fish, lean meat, and seafood. We do not have to punish ourselves in the gym for enjoying a meal, all one needs to do is enjoy the meal and learn to compensate it. Food has got a direct connection with our emotions. So, when we eat in stress, we end up gaining, no matter even if we are eating healthy or low-calorie food. The reason for this is that our body fails to understand how to treat food when in stress. Eating healthy should be a habit and not just a temporary thing, and this habit is best inculcated from childhood. Children should know what is healthy and what is a treat. Correct eating and exercise are both a part of culture and upbringing which should be given to our kids, so that they can carry it a long way. Diet plays a very direct and important role in defining the quality of hair, skin and nails. Although there is no magic food that will keep us looking young forever, but a good healthy diet will show its results on us overall. When I plan diets for my clients, the most important thing that I keep in mind is that we do not compromise on nutritional value of food. So always remember that losing weight is just a part of the journey, because the main aim is to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Chef Speak

Executive Chef Mohan Soni, DLF5, shares his take on healthy eating and gives out some recipes from the new health menu launched at The Magnolias Chia Pudding

Ingredients • • • • • •

Banana - 2 no. Chia seeds - 35 gms Almomd milk - 225 ml Cinnamon - 5 gms Maple syrup - 25 ml Almond - 40 gms

Directions

Caprese Sandwich Ingredients • • • • • • •

Ciabatta bread slice - 15 gms Fresh Mozzarella - 35 gms Basil - 6 leaves Heirloom Tomatoes - 35 gms Pesto - 15 gms Freshly Ground Pepper - to taste Coarse Salt - to taste

Directions •

Slice the heirloom tomatoes and the mozzarella into 1/2-inch-thick pieces.

Apply pesto on the bread. Layer the tomatoes and mozzarella on the bread, and season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Garnish with basil leaves.

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Cover the jar with a lid and give it a vigorous shake.

Chill for about an hour, then return to the jar and shake it up. Let chill for at least four hours and overnight is even better.

Chia seeds will expand and turn into thick consistency like batter

Put some sliced banana at the bottom of the jar. Pour half of the chia seed mixture. Put some chopped almond in the center. pour remaining chia seeds on top. Garnish it with sliced banana and chopped nuts.

Chef Mohan Soni believes that gluten-free whole grain has all the essential nutrients that your body needs like fibre, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, iron, zinc and antioxidants. They are incredibly nutritious since they contain lots of minerals, help in regulating blood, helps in lowering cholesterol etc. Eating oats and chia seeds for breakfast is known to help with weight loss because of its high fiber content that keeps you full and satisfied for longer. Oats/chia seeds are so versatile that they can easily become a part of any meal of the day. You need at least 25 to 38 grams daily. To be considered high in fiber, a food must contain least 5 grams of it per serving. The new health menu at The Magnolias is an accumulation of sandwiches, healthy juices and quickies. The menu has been curated keeping in mind that one is always on the move, hence all the items on this menu are more of takeaway products which one can easily pick up while rushing on their way to the office.

was always fascinated whenever I had seen the beauty and national heritage of Andaman Islands on National Geographic and Discovery channels and here I was with my family for an MMT vacation to the exotic Andaman’s. What beauty was in store for us was evident the moment our Indigo flight started its journey on the Bay of Bengal — the vastness of the sea, the play of clouds. It was nature at its best! We checked into Hotel SeaShell at Port Blair and were off to Ross Island. The small island, located just across the water sports complex at Port Blair is a peaceful destination and had lush green walking trails. It stands as testimony to its glorious past with old structures almost in ruins. Next on our list was a patriotic trip to the cellular jail and we witnessed the Light and Sound show which described the events in the jail prior to India’s independence. I was almost in tears by the end of the show....salute to the martyrs! We must value our independence and freedom because it has come after a huge sacrifice by our freedom fighters.

Andaman

The next day started with an experience of a lifetime. We were up for a ‘Coral Safari’ in a semi submarine experiencing the richness and beauty of the Bay of Bengal and the treasure of corals… it was beyond words! After the semi submarine

Early morning, proceeded in a ferry boat for an excursion in the deep blue waters to the Elephant beach and a session of snorkelling at the beach experiencing the marine life and touching the corals. Post lunch, we proceeded to visit the Radha Nagar Beach, one of the best beaches in India. The vastness of the sea and the beauty of beach was simply breath-taking! On our return to the resort, I booked an early morning scuba diving

session for my family and retired for the day with dreams of seeing myself as a National Geographic scuba diver. Scuba diving should be on a ‘must do activity’ whenever you visit Andaman’s. A 45 minutes training session and we were in the deep sea in full scuba gear. All kind of mixed feelings were present I was in the deep sea - anxiety, fear, excitement with corals, fishes and sea horses all around. An amazing sea world!!! Next, we cruised to the Neil island. True to its name with different hues of blue, the Bharatpur Beach at the Neil and its beautiful sunset made me say only one

All kind of mixed feelings were present when I was in the deep sea - anxiety, fear, excitement with corals, fishes and sea horses all around. An amazing sea world thing: ‘God, You are Great! Thank you for our beautiful and wonderful Universe!’ The trip would not have been complete without some souvenirs. It was time for shopping! The next day was the time to say goodbye to Neil. We travelled back to Port Blair and the last stop was a visit to Samudrika - a Naval Marine Museum. It was one great museum showcasing Andamans! After a gala dinner organised by MMT, we were transferred to the airport next morning to board our flight for the return journey. We were back to our cityscape and skyscrapers with sweet and beautiful memories of the Andaman Islands! It was without doubt, a journey of a lifetime!

t is believed that the true sense of living comes through yoga. It has been diversified massively by different cultures and reshaped with the creativity of humans. Enriching the souls by soaking within our own energy is a process which follows the yoga practice. Acceptance to everything is the main goal of yoga. When we experience uplifted heart energy, the chakra ‘Anhaata' helps us to evolve the positive emotions and keeping us compassionate about life. A strong and flexible body, glowing beautiful skin, peaceful mind and good health –yoga has all of this to offer. Yoga is not restricted to aasanas and pranayama. It is a practice with self, where the internal organs of the body start functioning with the respiratory system, and when the circulatory system comes into play, the musculoskeletal system understands the flow, from where we generate our inhibited energy. Yoga means oneness and it is concerned with self-exploration and liberating yourself completely. We have heard and read a lot about beer yoga, dog

yoga, horse yoga and the list goes on. There is nothing funny or silly about them. It is when you let go everything, could be the beer, maybe your pet, or maybe your own breath. A freespirited person can perform aasanas with much ease and is ready to further challenge himself. One who practices yoga has a liberated mind with a free thought process. During the practice, an internal force can be experienced, giving you power and strength for sustainability. Inner peace and joy will help you spread happiness. Self-exploration will connect you with Mother Nature. Yoga practice has its own beauty which will keep you ignited and centred. When we face the challenge on our mats, it makes us understand what acceptance is all about. Yoga brings the holistic approach, subliming all the odds, balancing the energies around and creating a positive atmosphere for a healthy lifestyle. Starting your day with these five basic exercises will give you power and positivity. A holistic approach to life enhances our memory and build self-control.

1. Joint Rotations • Neck • Wrists • Shoulders • Waist • Knees • Ankles Five times clockwise and five times anti- clockwise 2. Spine stretch • Standing postures • Uttanasana (forward fold) • Ardha Anuvittasana (back-bending) 3. Full breaths (inhalation- exhalation) three times 3 Warrior poses

part from providing an excellent locality for luxurious living, DLF ensures that the residents never feel short on the entertainment and leisure quotient. A joint initiative between DLF Foundation and Dignity Foundation has resulted in the development of the Senior Citizen Centre, a first of its kind recreational centre in DLF City. Located at the DLF Community Centre in DLF Phase-II, the centre was inaugurated by the Gurugram Municipal Commissioner V. Umashankar. The Centre which is open to all senior residents, hosts a plethora of activities ranging from Tai Chi, Yoga, Laughter Club, spiritual lectures and more. Residents can also indulge in aerobics, various quizzes and games, panel discussions, hobby and craft classes and festival celebrations. All these activities for the elderly would be organised five days a week and for two hours every evening. The Centre aims at creating an engagement platform for the senior citizens to interact socially, build a support network, boost their self-esteem and lead an active life. In the recent years, the elderly population in India has been rising and currently it accounts for about 8.6% of the total population, according to Census 2011. As compared to 5.6% in 1961, the population has seen a significant rise. This in turn has created a demand for special services catering to the elderly population like recreation centres and old age homes. With such initiatives, birthday celebrations to fun games, there is nothing that the senior citizens would feel short of.

gurugram speak

awareness is the key

Pankhuri Kumar, ACP (Traffic), tells us about the steps that go into making Gurugram a safe haven for women from all walks of life By sam lal

A

voracious reader, it is ACP Pankhuri Kumar's passion for books that opened the doors for a career in the civil services. High5 gets into a conversation with the officer to discover the aspects that form the core of women's empowerment and safety.

We hear a lot of talk about women’s safety and women’s empowerment. What do these two terms mean in a quantifiable context? They are two different measures where women’s empowerment is very clearly a social measure while women’s safety is pretty much within the ambit of the

law and order machinery. In a social context, there are a number of ways that we could approach the issue of women empowerment, but to make women safe, it is a measure that needs to come from a working relationship between women and the police department. I would also like to say that empowerment of women is also a part of women’s safety. They definitely intersect at various points. They both correlate with each other and both are co-dependent on each other. What are we talking about when we say a woman is safe? I think it is the perception of the mind. If we say a woman should be able to walk the streets alone safely, should she not also be safe within her own home too? If we look at the figures, women are not safe within their houses in many cases. That is why I say that a woman should feel she is safe and secure anywhere and everywhere. I think it is one of the key roles of this department to create an atmosphere where a woman knows in her mind that she is safe. I begin with awareness because we are actually very much empowered by the law but we do not know about it. There is ignorance in our minds that we are women and we are weak. This needs to be done away with. It is the foremost part of women’s safety. Gurugram is a constantly growing city. Does that pace of growth put any pressure on you in your mission of ensuring women’s safety?

34

high 5

I begin with awareness because we are actually very much empowered by the law but we do not know about it. There is ignorance in our minds that we are women and we are weak one could call, like 1091 is the women’s helpline number. GPS technology enables us to locate the person and provide security. I feel technology plays a very vital role in ensuring safety.

I think Gurugram is the place where safety of women is a challenging issue and yet it is also a place that can deliver really well in ensuring women’s safety. For us, the pressure is not about delivering safety, the pressure is about creating awareness. It is growing so rapidly and you have women from all walks of life in this city. So, to juggle between all those aspects and to create that envelope of safety within their minds, that is the challenge. In terms of delivering safety to the women of Gurugram, what are some of the activities you undertake routinely?

There are three key aspects I always talk about. They are the three stages, actually - before the crime; during the crime and after the crime. In the first stage we need prevention. In the second stage we need investigation and protection and we need scientific observation. After the crime, preservation becomes the key factor. How important is technology in ensuring a safe environment for women? I think technology is everywhere. We should think of it as a boon for all of us. It is a very important tool to help provide safety. We have so many phone numbers

Speaking of technology, DLF5 is completely under CCTV surveillance. Do you think that would deter a perpetrator? I think so. It has been observed that people tend to behave in a systematic manner when they know they are under observation. They also have the fear that they will be caught if they are not abiding by the law. CCTV is also a part of such technology. As a lady and as an officer, is there any message you would like to convey our readers? Do not be afraid. It is the fear that lets us tolerate whatever is thrown our away. There is no need to do that, you have to speak up. When you speak up we will be around to help you.

rendezvous with lost treasure One of the oldest UNESCO sites, Ajanta and Ellora are a testimony of India's heritage and culture By Anu pd

G

ood morning darling! I have to go to Ajanta- Ellora!” I exclaimed as I turned on my side towards the husband. As he touched his forehead in disbelief, I was already gushing about being amongst the best collection of frescoes and sculptures from ancient and medieval India— having experienced all of it in my dreams! And that is how I found myself on a flight out the next day, to Aurangabad, which can be reached directly from Delhi and Mumbai. Ajanta Caves remain open throughout the year with a weekly holiday of Monday. The tour books told me that the 34 caves at Ellora and the 29 caves at Ajanta remained in obscurity for over a millennium, until Capt. John Smith, a British Army Officer, accidentally stumbled upon them while on a tigerhunting expedition in 1819. After breakfast I left for a day trip. My first destination was Daulatabad Fort. Aurangabad is titled as "The City of Gates" and the strong presence of these can be felt as one drives through the city. Soon the very majestic fort loomed up! The Fort consists of multiple layers of massive walls, deep water trench and

entryways

After visiting the massive fort, my next destination was Ellora Caves. The Ellora Caves are located about 28 kms from the city and consist of 34 "caves" that are actually structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills. The main attraction here, the Kailasa Temple is in cave number 16. A megalith carved out of one single rock, it is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in India because of its size, architecture and sculptural treatment. The Kailasa Temple is notable for its vertical excavation. It must have been a superhuman effort indeed, with the structure having been cut-out top

down, into the rock-face of the mountain! Building the Kailasa temple took around 200 years to complete. On the wall of the temple you can see the story of the epic Mahabharata carved out beautifully. Apart from Kailasa, there are 33 other rock-cut caves at Ellora; some breathtaking and some that could be bypassed. As I drove back to Aurangabad, I thought about the Ellora caves—such an impressive complex of rock shrines representing all the three different faiths of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. The next morning I was more than excited to get going to the Ajanta caves and the 100 kms drive went by in a couple of hours. After purchasing entry tickets, I was in hurry to see the

a fascinating spiritual tourist attraction for Buddhists and scholars and researchers of Buddhism. The caves house some of the best-preserved wall paintings here while others boast of some of the most divine sculptures. Truly, the Ajanta caves and the treasures they house, are a landmark in the overall development of Buddhism in India and in general.

magnificent wonder named Ajanta caves. After a certain height gain, the beautiful Ajanta caves showed up, excavated in a horse-shoe shaped rock surface about 77 meters in height overseeing a narrow stream known as Waghora. Historically, this mountain region was an ancient Deccan trade route to the sea and these caves were hostels for Buddhist monks and for travellers and traders to rest.

Once done here, I reached back Aurangabad to see the other gems of the area. First I visited Panchakki (Water mill). This mill was designed to generate energy via water brought down from a spring on a mountain. The next destination was Bibi ka Maqbara. Bibi Ka Maqbara was built by Azam Shah, the oldest son of Aurangzeb. This was his attempt to rival the Taj Mahal built by his grandfather, albeit in memory of his mother, Rabia Durrani. One of the striking features of Bibi Ka Maqbara is its resemblance to the Taj Mahal in Agra. It is often called the Deccan Taj or the Taj of the Deccan.

The murals and frescoes adorning the walls of the structures at Ajanta depict the story of Buddhism, spanning the period from 200 BC to 650 AD. Many of the caves have panels depicting stories from the Jatakas, a treasure trove of stories about the several incarnations of the Buddha. This makes the Ajanta caves

My trip came to an end and my thoughts on my flight back home were with the ancient folks who went through the dense forests, unaware of the dangers, seeking a place where they could find peace. These people were great explorers and artists, excavating, carving and painting the caves as beautifully as they did.

salubrious delights

Take a bite into elements that should be a part of one's daily eating habits and experience the fact that healthy can be tasty too

T

he struggle between healthy and tasty food is a never-ending one. It is an undisputed fact that nutrition is important for everyone. When combined with being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight, eating well is an excellent way to help your body stay strong and healthy. People often misinterpret ‘diet’ as a specific weight-loss plan, but a good diet, simply put, is the types and amounts of food we must consume. A good diet must include a balance of several food groups, as no

38

high 5

single food group can provide everything we need for a healthy and active living. Chef Abhijit of DLF Golf and Country Club enlists the requisites of healthy eating and their significance. Whole grains Dietary fiber from whole grains, as a part of an overall healthy diet, helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease. Whole grain products like whole-meal bread, pasta, and cereals, in each grain include the germ and bran.

To make sure the grains that you are consuming are whole grains, look for the word "whole" or "whole grain" on the nutritional information on the packaging. Fruits and vegetables Fruits and vegetables are known to be rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Although a lot of packaged juices nowadays are labelled "100 percent" fruit extract, nonetheless eating whole fruits or vegetables is considered a better option any day, as they are believed to

provide more fiber and other nutrients.

Protein Protein is believed to repair damaged cells and make new ones; hence protein rich foods form an essential part of healthy eating. The top sources of protein include meats, fish, and eggs. Beans, nuts, and soya are the apt protein options for those on a vegetarian diet. Dairy A calcium-rich diet promotes healthy bones and teeth. Dairy products are also good sources of calcium. Low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese are the recommended products under this food category. Fats Fats have a bad reputation and are frequently disparaged as a cause of rising obesity rates and problems associated with extra weight, such as heart disease, high cholesterol and more. It is important to realise that fats too are an important part of a good diet, although they need to be consumed in a minimal amount. Important for brain health, energy, absorption of certain vitamins, and for skin, hair, and joint health, saturated fats are present in cream, fatty meat, and fried foods. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that healthy fats should make up less than 30 percent of total calories. Sugars Sugars occur naturally in some foods, such as fruits, or they can be added as a sweetener. Too much sugar can lead to weight gain, heart problems, blood sugar imbalances, and other health issues. Hence, one needs to be careful about the amount that they are consuming. For a healthy diet, you may need to make some changes in what you eat and how you eat. Small changes are easier to make and can lead to better health. • Keep more fruits, low-fat dairy products (low-fat milk and low-fat yogurt),

vegetables, and whole-grain foods at home and at work. Focus on adding more of healthy foods to your diet, rather than just taking unhealthy ones away. • Buy a healthy-recipe book, and cook for yourself. Chew gum when you cook so you would not be tempted to snack on the ingredients. • Pack a healthy lunch and snacks for work. This lets you have more control over what you eat. • Put your snacks on a plate instead of eating from the package. This helps you control how much you eat. • Do not skip or delay meals, and be sure to schedule your snacks. If you ignore your feeling of hunger, you may end up eating too much or choosing an unhealthy snack. • Drink water instead of high-sugar drinks. • Try to eat a family meal every day at the kitchen or dining table. This will help you focus on eating healthy meals. • Eat your meals with others when you can. Relax and enjoy your meals, and do not eat too fast. Try to make healthy eating a pleasure, not a chore.

New Bottle, New Wine

Timelessly gorgeous, refined performance, sporty character and utmost comfort, The Audi A7 is appealing in every manner By kanika Sandal

T

o put it simply, this one is an Audi Sportback that allures. Years after Audi first used the Sportback title on today’s five-door Audi A3, the name now fits appropriately on the A7, which is lower-slung and a more stylish fivedoor coupé. On first glance, the best, and probably, only fitting way to describe the A7 to your friend is that it is a ‘sporty’ version of the A6 saloon. A well-built cabin is what welcomes you as you open the door. There has never been a doubt about the fact that Audi

42

high 5

make some of the bests cabins in the car industry, and this one is a fine testament of the manufacturer’s reputation. The interior, based on that of A6 comes with a higher level of specification and provides ample space to the passengers. There are digital screens aplenty in the new A7, with a 12.3-inch screen replacing the instruments ahead of the driver, a large 10.1-inch infotainment and media screen, and an 8.6-inch screen that sits below it with haptic controls that customers will use for climate control and other functions. All the buttons and control knobs have a

slick action, and the general ambience is reminiscent of luxury and quality. The Audi A7 will get a 3-litre turbocharged V6 with 335 bhp and 500 Nm to begin with but expect the 3-litre diesel to make it into the car very soon too. The A7 as before will also get the Quattro all-wheel drive setup and there will also be a smaller 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engine option too. Other fuelsaving features include an updated auto stop/start system that can use a feed from the A7’s standard front camera to restart the engine when traffic begins moving again. At launch, the secondgeneration A7 will be powered by Audi’s familiar 340-hp turbocharged 3.0-litre V-6 engine. Replacing the current eight-

speed automatic transmission is a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Audi claims the combination can send the all-wheel-drive hatchback from zero to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds; top speed is governed at 155 mph. Rear-wheel steering is another new addition. At speeds below 37mph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the fronts, reducing the car’s turning circle and making it more agile, while at higher speeds all four wheels turn in the same direction to make the car more stable. A sleek and timeless design with a drooping rear deck makes the A7 one of the best-looking five-door cars of all time. The front is much more pronounced as the angular headlights sandwich a larger

version of the Audi’s single-frame grille. Further back, there are pronounced front wheel arches, a relative shallow sixwindow glasshouse, heavy swage lines within the lower sections of the doors and a roofline that slopes heavily towards the rear – all in keeping with the original A7. Around back, the tapered tail culminates in a liftgate that rises to provide access to a roomy cargo area. The rear seats fold down which is handy if you need to increase the size of the boot. The Audi A7 has not yet been crash tested by Euro NCAP, but the A6 on which it is based earned the maximum five-star rating. Audi claims that there are 39 different driver-assistance systems working to help the driver to drive and avoid collisions. These systems are split into three packages: Audi AI parking package, City assist package and Tour assist package. Another of the 2018 Audi A7 feature which is the 'AI button' will be used to activate the Audi AI remote garage pilot and remote parking pilot. With this technology, the car will be able to park itself or manoeuvre out of a garage. A car that tempts both the head and the heart, the Audi A7 has successfully improved as one of the most seductive vehicles in the segment. This one is a more efficient five-door coupe, fuelled from the fountain of youth.

Mehak Malhotra, a resident of The Magnolias has started Samavesh to enable financial inclusion through digital means

T

he Prime Minister’s announcement of Jan Dhan Yojana on 15th August 2014 ushered in a new era - since then, over 300 million accounts have been opened with deposits of over 10 billion dollars; Rupees 230 million worth of debit cards have been issued to these account holders. However, this is not adequate. For the new system to be effective, the people have to use their accounts and services; something they are not able to do due to financial illiteracy and an innate fear of technology. I started Samavesh as an initiative that will work to achieve financial inclusion of all populations, urban and rural, through the use of the internet and technology in the simplest way possible- step-bystep guides. The First Steps: Getting to know my community Before planning any of the content

or structural elements, I needed to familiarise myself with the community and the needs of the people in it. The first part of my research consisted of conducting door-to-door interviews in over 200 households in DLF5 with a simple questionnaire for domestic staff in terms of the mediums of financial transaction they had used, the resources they had access to, etc. The research confirmed that for the domestic staff the problem was not the lack of resources but the lack of confidence and understanding. The Solution When it came to producing the content, I had one goal-simplicity. I decided to create step-by-step guides in the form of brochures-with minimal text and heavy emphasis on its corresponding visuals. My pilot brochure was ‘How to use an ATM’. Before releasing this, however, I conducted focus groups with domestic staff at The

Magnolias to evaluate the effectiveness of my content and format by giving the brochure to people who had never used an ATM before and letting them perform a transaction independently. These focus groups were an immense success, and the satisfaction and empowerment expressed by those who completed their first transactions motivated me to carry forward this initiative and expand my reach. I now have guides on the use of debit cards, e-wallets and e-aadhar downloads and plan to expand my reach beyond The Magnolias to other condominiums in DLF5. To the Readers If you support this cause and believe that financial literacy is the key to an inclusive and successful community, please visit www.mysamavesh.com for brochure downloads, volunteering opportunities or in case of questions or offers to expand my initiative.

Competitive fencing is one of the five sports which have been featured in every one of the modern Olympic Games since 1896. In countries like France and Italy, it would not be very uncommon to bump into an Olympian fencer on the street or find yourself outside a fencing club! Banquet With The Stars

DLF5 hosted an evening that featured the inimitable Madhur Jaffrey, popularly known as the global first lady of Indian cuisine

I

t was an extremely pleasant December evening and the immaculate environs of the DLF Golf and Country Club, bathed in soft light, gently shimmered with an air of expectation. The anticipation was welldeserved because it is not every day that one gets to be in the presence of the global first lady of Indian cuisine and listen to her views first hand.

The occasion was a conversation between the celebrated Madhur Jaffrey, CBE, and Kaveree Bamzai, Editor of Robb Report India, as part of a series of platforms organised by Tasting India: Farm To Table. This initiative is a collaboration between the Stockholmbased Make In India promoter, Sanjoo Malhotra and Sourish Bhattacharyya, veteran journalist, noted food critic

and blogger. DLF5 partnered this event, which was a veritable sensory feast. The event began with Sanjoo and Sourish talking about the objectives behind Tasting India: Farm To Table, which can be summed up as a series of activities aimed at empowering Indian gastronomy and then the buzz went several decibels higher as Madhur Jaffrey entered the venue. From there on it was a delightful journey across continents, vocations, movie stars and the celebration of Indian cuisine. Madhur sparkled and a little bit of her stardust rubbed off on everybody present. A night to remember with inspiring conversation, excellent cuisine and a sense of bonhomie that only DLF5 can create.

L'oeuvres dramatiques

Celebrating the spirit of childhood, DLF5 stood host to a mellifluous evening of drama and music

I

t is said you should always keep the child alive in you. Keeping up with this thought, DLF Club5 became host for a special Children Day’s stage play called: ‘Play it right’. The show which is a venture of Urban Suburban Productions has been scripted and directed by Vanessa Ohri along with Ruby Kapoor. A hillarious yet thought-provoking view of the adult world through the eyes of children, the production saw 25 talented boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16 enthrall the audience with drama, rhyme, rhythm and music.

The play was divided into five short and snappy unconnected acts, each highlighting a different hypocrisy or contradiction that our adult world is guilty of. The act ‘Mario Mustafa Mehra’ saw three Martians descend on earth in search of love and escape with Mario, a living example of communal harmony. The drama piece ‘Indipop’ talked about Inderjeet Singh, a typical old school patriarch who migrates from a small village in Punjab to Canada and back home again till he finally unravels the secret working of the teenage brain. ‘You’ve gotta be kidding’ was an energetic and cheeky exploration of all the contradictions between what adults practice

and what they preach whereas ‘Raju, the Rockstar’, explored celebrity hype in America. Lastly ‘By Example’ uncovered what happens when child researchers do an in-depth analysis of adult behaviour. A riot of energy and fun, this production from Gurgaon’s popular theatre company was a dramatic delight for all. Urban Suburban Productions, founded in 2010 by five theatre enthusiasts, Arati Singh, Vanessa Ohri, Ruby Kapoor, Farah Singh and Sumita Tayal is well known for its original scripting, enjoyable direction and high-quality production standards. USP's other productions are Heaven on Fire, God, I’m no Goddess, Check Please and Just Kidding.

On A Blissful note

Leading a life of harmony calls for burying one's ego while giving ears to what has been ordained by the Divine power By T.K Mukherjee

68

high 5

A

ll problems in life are essentially problems of harmony. We have repeatedly failed to learn that human ego is a good servant but a bad master. Harmony can be achieved only if life takes orders from the soul and not from the ego. This world of ours is a playground of our individuality and a multi-coloured stage where the soul can and must achieve its ultimate emancipation. It is by realising our own-self that one can unhesitatingly perform his duties to the family, and society. Every single impulse of ours is derived from Him who pervades everything and everything forever. All the actions we do in the world in every way is ordained by the Divine as also the peace that cradles in life. He resides in our soul, he presides outside— that is our wisdom. To pursue and follow it is the reason why we are born. Not to follow the domain of egoism, which destroys his humanness. Unfortunately, a large proportion of seven billion people on earth are those who seek sensepleasure and acquire name, fame, and wealth; ignoring worship and wisdom, culminating in sufferings, deprivation, strife, conflict, destruction and killings. Our body and our sensory system are all products of the evolution of material processes from lower to higher levels. But the buddhi, the pure, stable and insightful discriminative faculty in the human being, when it is not under the thraldom to sensory system, is something unique and becomes the channel for the spiritual energy hidden in every human being to flow out into life as dharma or the science of values. The capacity to love, to work for other’s welfare and to establish happy relations with others is a spiritual capacity. It does not come from the intellect. One may be a big scholar, but he or she may be a petty-minded individual. When our spiritual awareness is awakened, even if it is a little, we feel oneness with all.

All the actions we do in the world in every way is ordained by the Divine as also the peace that cradles in life The wonderful approach of Vedanta to human welfare, human development, human fulfilment, is universal in scope. We must get rid of an exaggerated insistence on the use of reason and the correctness of our individual reasoning and its right to decide and pass comment on all matters. No doubt, reason has its place especially with regard to certain physical things and worldly issues— even though there too it is a very fallible judge, but its claim to be the decisive authority in matters of spiritual issues is untenable. As per our scriptures, reason and intellectuality cannot make any person seeking freedom from the binds of consumerism, it is the soul that sees and helps in the process of seeking. Today, it is true to say that the Indian state has behind it the will of the people; but this is based on hope that intentions and promises will soon flow into performance and achievements, hope that these will

not get stranded in the upper social strata leaving only a few trickles to reach the lower levels, and hope that it will reach these levels in sufficient force to fertilise the national life at the roots. But, unfortunately, the importance of administration in the sphere of social function has been compromised by the slogan-mongering politicians who devoid of their constitutional responsibility to public, indulge in unconstitutional and unethical activities in making individual gain at public suffering. Our mistake of the past few centuries was that we exaggerated the ritual aspect of worship, did not put stress on the need of spiritual growth and development of character and work efficiency. Today, our people need to remember only one thing: Whatever be the name and form of God we worship, never forget that great RigVeda dictum, “Truth is one; sages call it by various names”.

magine looking down from the Moon and viewing our gracefully twirling Earth. Any which way we look at it, it will take our breath away. Stunning pictures, amazingly beautiful views! The swirls of white and blue, mingling of the clouds and the deep blue sea - so silent and so calm from afar. Take a deeper look and we will capture an image of a disturbed surface, of a very troubled world that we have turned this planet into. We may not hear the deep sound of the Earth’s rotation, but we would imagine we would hear a big commotion if we drew closer to the planet. Commotion not just from loud sounds coming from mankind and manmade machines, but also from man’s own complex games, and the hurt and fury that he unleashes into the universe. As the Earth spins in its neverending saga, so does mankind spin its own tales of complexities. Wars, bombs, torrid minds, human manipulations, power, greed - not just from hunger and ego, all equally leave a scar on this Earth. Massacres, killing in the name of religion, killing for land, obsessions and possessions! All seem so strange to the viewer on the Moon. At the end of the day, we say it’s a survival issue, but this fight for survival leaves more dead than survived!!

emptiness we may question what drives the universe, what drives our Earth and our creation? What is the raison d’être of our existence? No easy answers, so man set out to create the world! He laid the rules of existence; he created religion, caste and creed. He also created a wide web of complexities which is as thick and incomprehensible as the complexities of the universe. From the spaces of nothingness, we will wonder what this mad scramble in life is all about. Why have we increased the tempo of our lives and at what cost? Imagine if, as we drew close to Earth, we heard crackling sounds of laughter instead, how soothing it would be and what positive rippling effects it would have on mankind and consequently on every aspect on Earth. Imagine if we convert our anger into soft admonishment instead, what a happier world we would have. A lot of our problems emerge because of that inflection in our tones. If we learn to cut that tinge in our tones as we speak and bring it to normal frequency, we would immediately feel a sense of elation besides leaving a constructive bind on all. The world has its share of love and care at every nook and corner. We need to elevate that centre-stage, to a more predominant place in our world.

Why is the human race so complex and restive? Why do we create a web of our lives which engulfs us into it so completely that we fail to see beyond? Do we not understand the language of another fellow human being? Imagine the lurking fear of a leopard in the jungles versus a lurking fear from another human in our very own urbanised surroundings! Is there no bridge of understanding?

Peace, can we work to inculcate a sense of innate calm and completeness within and the habit of letting go? Letting go not of our determination or our resolve to achieve and progress, but letting go of our need for one-upmanship over our fellow beings, letting go of our angers and indisciplines, letting go of our intolerances and rigidities. Let us find our balance in life, let us be who we are and not follow the herd.

Imagine yourself sitting on the edge of the rotating globe; imagine yourself in emptiness, a fleck too small. In that

Let us close our eyes, imagine our presence in the vastness of the universe and reimagine a beautiful world!

Contemplating contentment

Happiness is an emotion best felt when you be yourself, accept life and have faith that everything will come your way By Deepti Uppal

72

high 5

T

here are people who seem to say happiness is found in acts of kindness, some say helping others bring you peace, some say act of giving brings you joy, some endorse meditation makes you centered while some conclude following your heart gives you solitude. I try all of these, to be honest. I meditate, I socialise, I practice kindness, I love partaking

into the joy of giving while I also love to assist people. Then, why do I still catch myself often pondering over the simplest of all subjects, Happiness. Some days, I struggle and other days, I am high. I seem to be in a trial and error mode with the profound subject of happiness. While I am yet to figure out a sure shot route to it, just sharing all that has started to work for me thus far. Acceptance is a good start to happiness. I struggle with this one each day and sometimes multiple times in a day. Affected by people, situations and even weather, I often contemplate how God could have done something to my favour and how my life could have been better to have this and that in my experience. But, all these motions last only for a short while. As we age, we are guided from within to broaden our minds and hearts. Things, of course, continue to matter but the intensity is far grounded, therefore the impact is much lesser. We become more open to accepting the laws of the land, accepting the laws of the universe and accepting ourselves the way we are and also attempting to accept people around us the way they are. Faith is the most important loop on your happiness sojourn I had read about faith, heard stories, and somewhere deep down believe in it too. However, being an ordinary mortal – like always I have my motions. I am not perfect, and I admit that, perhaps, I never will. But, what I really can guarantee for myself and be responsible for, is to make an earnest attempt at improving my understanding, view and approach to people and subjects. The subject of faith is left to your own interpretation in many ways. Faith can be in an unseen, an unheard supreme power, faith can be in an idol, faith can

be a religion or it can be completely abstract. However, the fact of the matter remains that you ought to have faith in believing that there is something, somewhere, watching over you for your well being and everything happening in your life is perfectly timed. This faith drives you to believe that your wish will be fulfilled in due course of time and that something, somewhere, is working with you towards your goals. Smile works like an insurance policy during your pursuit of happiness Last week, one of my reporting officers was unreasonable with his conduct while addressing my stand of not letting the team do something that falls beyond our core skill set purview. He completely disregarded the fact we worked for nights in a row until 3 am to pull off an endeavour. I had my reasons thought through. Therefore, I took that decision of saying ‘NO’ with a proper explanation to back it. I really did not expect him to explode publicly making it personal. This episode left me unsettled for a day, actually four days until I stumbled upon this short film on the internet titled “Smile”. The story line was simple: bad things happen, people misbehave and life gets rough but the only way to gather yourself in such times is to resort back to basics of human existence, one of which is – smile. Smile when life gets tough, smile amid the chaos, smile to yourself, smile to others, smile to the universe! I took to smiling for no reason and life became near normal as peace prevailed within me and smiling made me happy. To sum this long story up – accept, have faith, keep smiling and do not bother so much about running after happiness, it is really not worth the effort. In fact, just do what makes you feel yourself and happiness will run after you!

The Bag Trick

A short trip to watch a cricket match turned into a prolonged comedy of errors By Krishan kalra

O

ur elder son’s company had sponsored one of the IPL teams and the entire family planned a trip to Hyderabad for a crucial match and lunch with the team. In addition to all of us from Gurugram, our younger son Karan and his wife Supriya were also to join from Mumbai. Since their flight was to arrive only a little later, we decided to wait so all of us could go to the hotel together. In a few minutes, the Mumbai passengers started walking in and soon we saw these two also approaching. First thing they told us was that one of the five pieces – one travel bag and four cartons of Alphanso mangoes – checked in by them was left behind and the airline would get it delivered to the hotel later at night. “No big deal”, we told them; but wait a minute, ‘do they know which piece has not come’; this was still a mystery. If it is their travel bag, poor guys would not be able to change for the evening match! Anyway, everyone offered to chip in with a T-shirt or shorts and the immediate problem seemed to have been solved. Soon an airline official confirmed that the missing piece was only a carton; this was a big relief; the three mango cartons had come and we started looking out for their clothes bag. Soon, they could see their grey Samsonite rolling in at the tail. Karan ran

74

high 5

and picked it up and we were all set to leave. “Hang on a minute, our bag cannot be that heavy”, exclaimed the young man. A closer look revealed it was not their bag indeed! A quick search revealed there were no other bags waiting to be collected. All passengers had picked up theirs and gone and obviously one of them had walked out with our missing bag. Airline staff quickly identified the passenger’s name – Dinesh Kothari - whose bag was sitting there. They had his contact numbers; “We will soon get in touch with

him and get your bag, we are sorry for the inconvenience,” the usual blah blah. Both the numbers yielded no result. “This does not sound good,” was our common refrain. The bag is padlocked, we do not know what is in there, contraband, black money, drugs….. airline staff were not willing to break the lock. “Sir, it could be just a simple mix up, we have no authority to break the lock.” Finally, they agreed to screen it and we learnt that there were only clothes, shoes and toiletries in there. After lot of haggling and exchange of all possible contact numbers on either side they allowed us to

take the bag with us with the promise that as soon as they heard from the elusive man, they would contact us. The offer of loaned T-shirts was reconfirmed and we left the airport finally. Now, the anti-climax. As soon as we finished a late lunch at the hotel, there was a call from the ‘most wanted man’ - Dinesh Kothari. Very apologetic and offering to bring our missing bag to our hotel. Karan gave him his room number at the Marriot and he started laughing. “Come right up, Karan, I am in the

adjoining room! Sorry I have broken your lock, thinking I had the wrong key”. I wish the story had ended on that happy note. We soon discovered that the bag we gave him was indeed Dinesh Kothari’s but the one we got did not belong to Karan Kalra! This was a third identical grey Samsonite on this Mumbai – Hyderabad flight. It took us another three hours to establish contact with Mr Reddy – a state cricket board official - who had sent the wrong bag to his hotel room – and proceeded directly to the match venue at

Uppal for some last-minute arrangements. And, you would not believe this; his room was also on the same floor at the same hotel. A few calls later all three bags were in the rooms of their rightful owners, just in time for Karan and Supriya to wear their own T-shirts to the match. Mr Reddy met us at the match and also joined us at the team lunch next day for a good laughter session on this comedy of errors. Now, all three – Dinesh, Reddy and Karan – have tied distinctive bright coloured ribbons on their respective bags.

A visual Marvel

Designed specially for the Quorum Club, The Qube by entrepreneur artist Vir Kotak lets us explore beyond the surreal

E

ntrepreneur-artist Vir Kotak’s evocative use of installation and photographic prints represents him as someone who enjoys the process of creation and building things. This stimulus extends towards his passion for photography as well. Taking his work of art forward, he recently created The Qube for the Quorum Club, installed at Two Horizon Center. The Qube, a design specifically made for the Quorum is a complex one, as described by the maker himself. The installation has been built within layers that the viewer is confronted with and can explore. The rotating cubes of the installation are an extension on Vir Kotak’s previous explorations

of memory and it seeks to remind the observer of the subjectivity and temporality of memory. Moving the cubes, the reflected images of the fixed part of the installation are changed and very quickly the viewer is disoriented from remembering the exact original composition in the mirror. The cubes of the fixed part of the installation are like memories - they seem rigid and boxed, but on closer inspection, they variously reflect light or throw out shadows, often in confounding, complex patterns that are not what they originally seem - our memories play tricks on us and we do not really know it - they variously change, they cast shadows and they light up our existence, just like the cubes.

Work will grow but only if you are cautious and learn to look as well as plan for opportunities. Family life would be good most of this year for you. Health would improve except for some minor issues. Your wise decisions would be appreciated at home and work. Take care of your spouse and do not worry. The month overall promises to be a positive and prosperous one.

You will see yourself chasing new projects at the cost of real progress and growth prospects in life. The only way to handle this would be to plan out your year and not run after new options at work and in your personal life. Financially, there would be inflow but your pre-existing liabilities and expenses would take the advantage away and keep the finances on the edge.

Due to a very restless and highly active sub-conscious state of mind, you might find it challenging to concentrate on activities that would bring direct results. Work environment would improve tremendously, and you might appear as an obvious leader at work by the end of the year. Be cautious about investing in business as funds could get blocked. Be cautious and use your best judgement.

You will find a higher level of energy in mostly everything you do in 2018, as there will be an inherent rise in confidence and aggression. This is also the year when you will get things you had wanted and waited for, be it the new home, jewellery, watches or cars. You will find support from family. Your spouse may become a source of profit as well.

You will end up putting long hours at work and distractions would make it difficult for you to give your best. Still you will rise up to the challenges and come out a winner eventually.

You would be driven by new projects and opportunities at work, which is likely to keep you super busy throughout the year. However, confidence, energy and the willingness to put in long hours would be depleted at the same time. There appears to be some disharmony at home yet your status in the social arena remains strong. You should remain away from any clashes at work as confrontations are possible.

Some sort of accolade would come in due to your achievements this year. Diplomacy along with hard work is the best strategy to move ahead and show your colleagues the best way forward. Short-term travel could also rise substantially during 2018. Hard work and a clear action plan could help you grow tremendously. Your health is likely to suffer to some extent. Avoid any litigation, otherwise much expenditure is likely to be made.

You need to control your budgets and finances well this year, else there are likely to be challenges for you in this area. With improved wisdom and enthusiasm, you may develop good decisionmaking skills. This might bring appreciation and recognition for you at work. Source of livelihood is promising, and financial status may become stronger. Progeny related matters may face a few hiccups and might demand precautions.

Pessimism and negative thinking could take away the buoyancy and progress of the recent years. You might act in an unconventional manner that could lead to depletion in your status or public image. Your personality may see an improvement in general and you may become more courageous in life. Career is likely to remain stable. With control and power in your ownership, landing a position of authority is likely.
