WHAT THE PEOPLE HAS TO SAY?
INTERVIEWS Going through the lanes, bargaining…that’s the actual feel of college street!
TANYA VERMA 21, STUDENT
• Achaa listen, the shops in the college street, I wont call them shops. They are in the size of kiosks. There are books loaded all over the place. There are lanes and shops on both sides and college street is also famous for Indian coffee house which is always crowded.
• And all these are really sensitive and emotional places and there’s also a tram line going there!
• There isn’t anything that you wouldn’t find there. Ranging from every subject, to all kinds of fiction and non-fiction. • Well its on the road from stall to stall, shop to shop so the traffic becomes an issue and you have the weather which makes it worse sometimes. • But I like it, so many memories!
You get everything there. Even a 100 year old book! How cool is that?
SHRADDHA 20, STUDENT
There are many big bookstores which are over a century old, which sell all kind of books. Even rare books too. It's very very crowded. I don't like shopping in college street, the streets are too dirty and crowded ☹️☹️☹️
Its not just an experience its an emotion! RIA SARKAR 23, LAWYER
College Street is located in North Kolkata and walking through North Kolkata streets is a beautiful experience.
• Ok so personally i loved the experience because as a book lover, you can understand just being surrounded by thousands of books. • The stalls were crammed together but that didn't bother me at all. • shopping from College street remains one of my fondest memories 😍 • Now this was all more than 12 yrs ago..
Its my childhood dreamland! Surrounded by thousands of books...ahhhh! SOHAILA 36, CODER
WHAT THE PEOPLE HAS TO SAY?
INTERVIEWS RAKHAL MONDAL 45, BOOK SELLER
• Even if we are given our own space in the book mall, we will only stand out amid the otherwise fancy areas in the mall. The street has a much grounded feeling to it – and hawking has always been a part and parcel of people in the street. It is highly unlikely that the same conditions of the street will be present in the mall.
• In the College Street area, the booksellers generally operate on a very slim margin. Most of the shopkeepers have a very low working capital. In fact, even though I have this stall for around 14 years (he bought this stall from the original owner for around 2.5 lakhs, he clarified later) I cannot say that I have amassed a lot of cash to buy another shop. I have daily sales of around two to three thousand rupees but that is just sufficient to sustain my family. The exorbitant price that they (the mall authorities) are asking for booking a new stall is turning off most of the shopkeepers even if they would have booked a stall considering the pros and cons.
HOREN SAMANTA 62, PAVEMENT BOOK SELLER
SRIKANTHA GHOSH 47, BOOK SELLER
• If customers have to go to the fifth floor to find a book then chances are most of them would not even think of doing that. The ease with which we operate our business now on the street is missing in that mall. The planners are failing to understand we are a business depending on passing pedestrians. The second hand bookshops would be marginalised because they would have no way to attract their readers in this way.
• It does not make sense for us to go into the mall because we realise that we will be placed in a very precarious position with all the other bookstores vying for the same reader and with probably a better ambience.
Paresh Mazumder 34, BOOK SELLER

People from the whole city and different parts of the state gathers here for their books

EXISTING LAND-USE
EXISTING BUILDINGS
The project is the idea of transforming a half-mile of bookshops and bookstalls spilling over onto the pavement, carrying first editions, pamphlets, paperbacks in every Indian language, with more than a fair smattering of books in and out of print from France, Germany, Russia and England. One can buy rare books at throw-away prices and extensive bargaining take place.
SITE PICTURES
The idea of transforming natural environment into a unique shopping experience is synthesized through its spatial organization and various architectural elements. A series of minimum 1:15 sloping walkways are positioned continuously, descending gently down from upper to lower levels, to create a similar experience of ‘hill walk’. It effectively results in not only increased salable areas on the lower floor but also an infinite loop of spiral circulation, circling endlessly on all four levels.

SITE ANALYSIS
Possible points of entry and exits into the site well away from the nodes. Providing access points along the College Street and MG Road, will ease the ingress and egress. Service entries can be provided on the smaller roads in the periphery.
TRAM LINES
Tram Lines
Extreme importance to be given to the planning of entry and exits, service entries and pedestrian movement because the site is located at a high traffic junction. Proper placing of entries will ease the traffic flow and will increase the footfall in the development.
STRENGTH TRAFFIC PATTERN
Low traffic Moderate traffic High traffic
College Street continues to remain at the heart of political, social, and cultural debates. And why not? Being a colony of books, it is only fitting that College Street represents the essence of what books teach us — to broaden our minds and to question our long-held beliefs and institutions.
Many educational institutes, colleges dot the precinct which is a good attribute that helps in inflicting the reading culture in the young minds. Also has, good connectivity throughout the site.
WEAKNESS Prone to high traffic congestions. Also, the older buildings do not follow the building rules, no proper setbacks and access has been provided.
Maximizing the views from the site along the college street, will bring in a lot of traffic to the project.
OPPORTUNITIES Adding to thousands of book sellers on college street, Kolkata also hosts the biggest book fair once a year.
THREATS Might add to increased pollution and add on to the traffic congestion.
INFERENCE: 1. Good connectivity throughout the site. It can be well utilized to avoid traffic congestions. 2. Holds historical memories of the old market which can induce nostalgia and promote the reading culture.
3. In close proximity to the important landmarks in Kolkata which will bring people to visit the project.
CONCEPT AND DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
BOOK MALL AND MUSEUM, KOLKATA MADHUMITHA PRADEEP RA1611201010011 SAID, SRM IST
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PROMOTING READING CULTURE AND GAINING KNOWLEDGE Man cannot live alone. The company of books gives the pleasure of nature. Books are great blessings. They are useful to us many ways. They are our best friends. When we are in trouble, books stand by us and give us the right advice. Books console us in our sorrows.
Books bring enlightenment among the people and make them fond of knowledge. We never feel alone in the in the company of books. Books are written by experienced persons who are wise and who have matured minds. They are therefore, our best guides and philosophers, when we are in some confusion. Books give us inspiration to do great things.
That reading habits have changed can be gauged from the amount of time young people spend swiping through short videos on their smartphones. Perhaps they do so because they are accustomed to the habit since childhood.
