STRONG SWIMMERS

CONFIDENT KIDS New swim curriculum coming this fall! ABOUT AQUATICS

Swimming is a vital skill that makes life safer and more fun. Every child should learn how to swim for safety, fitness and a positive self-image. Lessons are developmentally appropriate and designed to teach skills effectively with safety as the top priority. Over the years, at the Madison Area YMCA, we have taught thousands of children, adolescents and adults to swim, which has helped to minimize the risk of drowning in our community. Classes include Parent/Child through Adult swimming instruction.

SO MUCH MORE

Experienced instructors offer group and private swim lessons for all ages and abilities. Swim lessons, offered year-round, build self-esteem, confidence and fitness. Our programs are focused on building strong, secure and confident individuals. Lap and open swim times are offered. Birthday pool parties are available. The Madison Area YMCA is home to the Mariners, our competitive swim team.

WHAT'S NEW

We’re excited to present the latest upgrades to you. Our new swim curriculum, coming this fall, is based on extensive research and is focused on building strong, secure and confident individuals — we look forward to seeing swimmers advance through the stages.

WHAT'S YOUR SWIM STAGE?

We’re saying goodbye to the fish names for classes and hello to an upgraded Y Swim Lesson curriculum. Our new class names more closely align with the skills built in each stage. See the next page for level to stage conversions.

www.madisonareaymca.org/Swim PRIVATE LESSONS

Private lessons provide personal instruction in the pool. Our qualified swim instructors are available for private swim lessons for ages 3 years old through adult. For more information, please email PrivateSwimLessons@madisonymca.org.

We’re saying goodbye to the fish names for classes and hello to an upgraded Y Swim Lesson curriculum. The fish names we previously used to identify the different levels have been replaced with names that more closely align with the skills we will work on in each stage. Swim stages A, B and C give our youngest friends, infants and toddlers, an opportunity to get comfortable in the water with a parent or guardian. In stages 1-3, our trained swim instructors facilitate activities that focus on building confidence in the water, instilling good water safety habits and personal growth. In stages 4-6, instructors help swimmers build confidence in deep water as well as work on stroke techniques. This exciting new curriculum helps each participant experience a sense of accomplishment after each lesson.

STEM: PREPARING YOUTH TODAY FOR THE FUTURE Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is an important part of youth development because it creates opportunities for youth to achieve, build relationships and feel a sense of belonging as they question, investigate, build, test, solve problems, analyze, communicate findings and perform cognitive thinking. Through our STEM programs, including enrichment offerings, programs at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center and our summer day camps, we prepare youth today for the future. We believe that all kids have potential and that nurturing that potential means fostering problem-solving, creativity, planning, analysis and decision-making skills. Our STEM programs provide youth with the skills needed to succeed. Day

CMHI focuses on reducing barriers to mental health care by providing community members with knowledge and skills to increase help offering behaviors. The Y provides opportunities to become certified in Mental Health First Aid. An evidence-based skills training course, MHFA, is designed for non-mental health professionals, preparing them to know how to help reduce the social distance between people with mental illnesses and others. For more information, please contact School Age Coordinator & CMHI Coordinator Katie Koontz at 973.377.4945 or kkoontz@madisonymca.org. Project Community Pride of the Madison Area YMCA is a no-fee youth counseling and support program for children, teens and families in Chatham, Florham Park and Madison who are struggling with social, emotional and/or behavioral issues. WHY THE Y

“LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Made Pam Cucco See Herself Whole Again” elementary school teacher who received hundreds of letters from her students during treatments. Pam learned about the LIVESTRONG program at the Madison Area YMCA from fellow cancer survivors. With the support of her husband and two adult daughters, she embraced the 12week, data-driven program, taking all the classes she could— including the integrative therapy offerings such as nutrition, balance, yoga, reiki and relaxation exercises. Partially through the program, Pam experienced a setback. She developed an infection that put her in the hospital and forced her to leave the program before completing it. While she was recovering, the Madison Area YMCA’s Sr. Director of Healthy Living Joe Gonsalves, who facilitates the LIVESTRONG program, called Pam to invite her back—to begin the program again. “Who does that?” says an incredulous Pam. “What community institution actively seeks out one individual and offers them a free pass to an improved life?” She started the program for the second time and graduated. “There’s a sense of community with LIVESTRONG Everyone who goes through LIVESTRONG is a warrior and they know what you’re going through,” she says.

“LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA made me see my power,” says cancer survivor Pam Cucco. “It was a game changer. I immediately made use of the program at the Madison Area YMCA in order to work out—not only to physically rehabilitate but to ‘work out’ all that disappointment, hesitancy and apprehension.” Pam says that the way she sees it, “LIVESTRONG helped me to get my face on—literally!”

And, Pam pays it forward. Her quarterly check-ups at Memorial Sloan Kettering include visits with cancer patients to share words of hope and encouragement. “LIVESTRONG gave me structure at a time in my life when there was none. I was able to see myself whole again. It gave me optimism and a sense of purpose,” Pam says, noting that she is indebted to the LIVESTRONG coaches. “They opened their hearts and hands in friendship. And what a boon to find a complimentary and holistic program in my own backyard.”

Three years ago, the Madison resident was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer that is usually diagnosed in children. The tumor had slid down her nasal passage and settled in her maxillary sinus. By the time her surgeries were completed, cancer had taken away most of her orbital floor, hard palate, left septum and teeth. “My plastic surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering told me, ‘I can’t make you look like God made you, but I will try my best,’” remembers Pam, who also felt empowered spiritually through the support of her church community at St. Vincent Martyr and pastor, Fr. George. Pam’s doctors recreated the left side of her face with titanium mesh. “It was amazing what they did,” says Pam. After successive radiation re-treatments, though, Pam’s face was left asymmetrical. “Though my physical scars were minimal, my emotional ones were massive,” says the former
