We’re saying goodbye to the fish names for classes and hello to an upgraded Y Swim Lesson curriculum. The fish names we previously used to identify the different levels have been replaced with names that more closely align with the skills we will work on in each stage. Swim stages A, B and C give our youngest friends, infants and toddlers, an opportunity to get comfortable in the water with a parent or guardian. In stages 1-3, our trained swim instructors facilitate activities that focus on building confidence in the water, instilling good water safety habits and personal growth. In stages 4-6, instructors help swimmers build confidence in deep water as well as work on stroke techniques. This exciting new curriculum helps each participant experience a sense of accomplishment after each lesson.

STEM: PREPARING YOUTH TODAY FOR THE FUTURE Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is an important part of youth development because it creates opportunities for youth to achieve, build relationships and feel a sense of belonging as they question, investigate, build, test, solve problems, analyze, communicate findings and perform cognitive thinking. Through our STEM programs, including enrichment offerings, programs at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center and our summer day camps, we prepare youth today for the future. We believe that all kids have potential and that nurturing that potential means fostering problem-solving, creativity, planning,
Preschool analysis and decision-making skills. Our STEM programs provide youth with the skills needed to succeed. Day

STRENGTH TRAINING THROUGH THE YEARS Thursday, May 16; 12pm
Presented by: Dr. Miriam Hillman, PT, DPT, CKPT
Madison Area YMCA
Please join us for an informative seminar navigating treatment for pediatric patients suffering from chronic pain. These conditions have various names but more recently have been named "Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS)" by Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). AMPS causes an abnormal or amplified response to normally painless stimuli (touch, pressure etc.). This syndrome is often challenging to diagnose and can take months or years to rule in. Treatment for AMPS focuses on aggressive exercises that increase heart rate, along with desensitization techniques to help reduce pain response. Please feel free to come with lots of questions! All family members are welcome.
Please join us for a seminar discussing the importance of strength training through all age groups. This seminar specifically highlights why strength training for older adults is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Building strength helps you to stay fit, maintain independence and reduce symptoms related to chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis and obesity. As people age, loss of muscle occurs at an increased rate making it that much more important to hit the weight room! This seminar helps to educate both the novice and more skilled weight lifter.
Presented by: Dr. Miriam Hillman, PT, DPT, CKPT
These FREE seminars are open to all. Stop by our office off the lobby of the Madison Area YMCA's Family Center with any questions. Registration is requested: Please call 973-270-7417 or email info@professionalptandtraining.com. 24 26 SPRING

Day

WHY THE Y
“Talking YMCA Family History with Marion and Bill Williams” “And, she still swims today,” says Bill. Their daughter is a professor at the University of Toronto Medical School. The Williams family have had lots of Y involvement over the years. They used to do family swim at the Y—and then all pile into Chitty Chitty Bang Bang–the affectionate moniker for their car—to go out for pancakes. Long-time advocates and donors to the Madison Area YMCA’s Annual Campaign, the family also bought a brick during the Y’s Plan 2000 campaign that has “Williams Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” inscribed on it. It can be found at the walkway near the Y’s entrance.
“I’m coming up on 88 years old and few people believe that,” says Bill Williams. Why don’t they? Because I have belonged to a Y somewhere since I was 12 years old.” Bill joined his first YMCA in 1943 in Hamilton, Ontario, where he grew up and went to college. “There was little entertainment— there was no TV really until after World War II—you joined the Y for things to do.” Sharing a funny anecdote, Bill says, “Years ago, girls didn’t belong to the Y.” Pointing out that the men didn’t care very much about their appearance, he followed it up with: “As soon as the Y started taking women as members, the men spruced up.”
The family regularly visited the Frost Valley YMCA in New York’s Catskill Mountains where families can spend time away together, and growing up the kids met their cousins at Frost Valley for summer camp. Bill and Marion’s two sons also went to Y summer camps that took place in the Watchung Reservation and Montreal among other places. The couple has 11 grandchildren of which four live near them in Chatham. “Our grandchildren loved Kids Central when they were little,” says Marion, who would take them to play. Bill and Marion say that regular exercise has played a factor in keeping them healthy. Bill spends 20-30 minutes on the treadmill three days per week. Marion rows and lifts weights. “We’ve had a lot to do with the Y over the years,” observes Bill. “And the Y has kept me from falling apart.”
After coming to the U.S. for graduate school in the Midwest, Bill moved to New Jersey to take a job with Bell Labs. An avid handball player since college, he joined Y handball teams in Westfield, Scotch Plains, Plainfield and Summit. When the Madison Area YMCA started a handball team in the early 1960s, Bill joined the Madison Area YMCA. It was also closer to where he and his wife Marion lived in Chatham Township with their three children. “Our kids learned to swim at this Y,” says Bill. “Our daughter was on the Madison Area YMCA’s synchronized swim team and also taught swimming here.” “She wanted to get her ears pierced at about 8 or 10 years old,” says Marion. “She wrote a letter of protest to her father. She got her ears pierced but the deal was that she couldn’t stop swimming until Bill said she could stop,” she says with a laugh.
