A new, vibrant destination at the corner of the West End. The expansive, interchanging space intends to cater for people of all ages, all interests, from all parts of the world. The revitalisation of this old Fremantle treasure and its intimate surrowndings intends to bring new life not just to the site itself, but heightened circulation for the surrownding business’ in the area that may in the past have been forgotten through undesirable routes through the town.
PRINCESS ON MARKET A new destination
My core intention was to establish a true and rich function for the upper levels of 29-33 Market Street and the large exposed brick original theatre space behind it that had been completely forgotten and abandoned. Modified circulation to the site makes all individual components of the complex easily accessible, with the street openings intriguing to those walking past, drawing them inside. The ‘complex’ features a boutique hotel, deli, cafe, numerous bars and a restaurant, the theatre and a rooftop event space.

F Located to the North-East corner of the Fremantle West End, a highly historically and culturally significant urban precinct in Perth, and Australia. Market Street features some of the most evident examples of Federation Free Classical architecture from the early decades of the 20th century, produced from the Gold boom. 29-33 Market Street is an important building in Market Street that contributes heavily to the rich townscape that can be seen.

The past few years has seen the highest level of mass migration since World War II. Recent events have taken a turn for the worst with higher death tolls and extreme levels of stranded refugees despite deals being made and negotiated between the European Union and the countries of origin. Recent agreements between the EU and Turkey involves a deal where refugees in overly congested legal and illegal camps in Greece are to be deported back to Turkey, a country already holding over three million refugees. Though, since this was passed in early April, only 500 refugees have been relocated from the Greek camps, with 45,000 people still stranded just in Greece alone.
HELLINIKON REFUGEE ACCOMODATION Migrant Crisis in Europe Solution Concept
This is due to slow processing times, disorganization, minimal infrastructure in place and the question of whether Turkey is in fact deemed safe as a destination for these refugees. Other countries of reception such as Germany, Sweden and Italy suffer from their own issues, but Greece still remains in a dire state, with the economic and political status of the nation taking a toll on the potential progress into finding a stable solution.
Hellinikon, Athens
Hellinikon Refugee Accommodation
The site is just seven kilometres from central Athens, three kilometres from the new International Airport and one kilometre from a large port on the Aegean Sea. Expansive flat concrete paving and grassed areas previously used as runways by commericial planes. A vandalized Jumbo Jet and two Airbuses can still be seen to the side of the runway. The previously iconic 1969 Eeero Saarinen East international airport terminal is abandoned.
Hellinikon Refugee Accommodation aims to create a safe and tame environment for the refugees while they get processed and assessed or the duration before they are relocated elsewhere in Europe to permanent housing. Designed in small ‘suburbs’ through the placement of the different types of containers homes, mixed in with patches of green space and communal gardens. These suburbs contain the basic amenties such as medical centres, laundromats, libraries, grocery shops, schools and playgrounds for children.
