A B S T R A C T China manufacturers nearly 97% of all shipping containers and is also the largest exporter because it is more economical to manufacture new ones than to ship the empty containers back to China (“Facts About Shipping Containers”). Approximately 11 million out of the existing 17 million shipping containers are unused and sitting stagnant in shipping yards, farms, or industrial sites across all continents (“Don’t Let Those Millions of Shipping Containers Go Unused”). These abandoned containers can be repurposed into homes, offices, stores, or restaurants. One potential solution to this problem is to upcycle containers into luxurious guest suites. Toka Puia is a resort in Pukekawa, New Zealand

WELCOME

that has repurposed 107 shipping containers into 30 suites and a spa and wellness building. In addition, the resort was designed to leave the smallest carbon footprint as possible by using on-site renewable energy as well as green building materials with long life cycles. These green design elements have contributed to the resort’s potential Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. LEED is a worldwide green building rating system that recognizes buildings that have achieved a standard of sustainability. Some LEED elements that have been incorporated into the design include photovoltaic cells on the roofs of all suites and buildings as well as an electric vehicle shuttle service for both guests

and employees. This resort demonstrates that upcycled and environmentally efficient buildings can exist without sacrificing beauty. Located on New Zealand’s North Island, the city of Pukekawa is a hidden, rural gem. The city is situated on vibrant green rolling hills, surrounded by jewel blue skies, and has dark, fertile soil due to the extinct volcano below the surface. It’s a quiet escape from the busy pace of urban metropolis. Mild, warm weather can be enjoyed here year-round. Pukekawa is part of the Waikato District which has a population just over 75,000. The tertiary city is located halfway between Auckland (New Zealand’s largest city at 1.6 million people), and Hamilton (New Zealand’s fourth largest city at 240,000 people); it’s a one-hour drive to either city. New Zealand as a country has a relatively small population of 4.8 million, but the population, as well as tourism, continues in an upward trend. The official languages of New Zealand are English and Maori. Maori make up 14% of New Zealand’s population today, and their language, history, traditions, and art are primary components that make up New Zealand’s identity. The North Island is a special place to visit due to the rich native Maori culture still present today. While visiting, guests can attend a Powhiri (Maori welcome ceremony) on a traditional

Marae (Maori meeting grounds) or visit Mine Bay at Lake Taupo where you can see Maori rock carvings. The unique Maori architecture, carvings, weavings, and other Maori art inspired the design of the Toka Puia Resort & Spa. The Waikato District is the perfect central location for Toka Puia Resort & Spa. Acting as a central hub, the resort is surrounded by countless adventures. Guests can tour one of the dozen wineries in the area that produce varieties such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc. Using the resort’s electric vehicle shuttle service, guests can take a day trip in any direction to one of the North Island’s incredible beaches including Manu Bay and Piha Beach. There are also countless stunning hiking routes with scenic waterfalls and incredible views. Guests can even stop by the Onewhero Golf Course just a few minutes away from the resort. As inspiring and breathtaking as New Zealand’s landscape is, the design of Toka Puia Resort & Spa is such that once guests arrive, they may wish to remain tucked away in their secluded suite, enjoying private pools by day, and the glittering skies by night.

AT THE RESORT

P U I A

Toka Puia Resort & Spa is settled in the folds of New Zealand’s rolling green pastures with an extinct volcano below the surface. Pukekawa is one of the oldest volcanic cones in the Auckland volcanic field and can be credited for the dark, fertile soil that the North Island enjoys. Inspired by its location and the native Maori culture, the resort was named Toka Puia (pronounced, “Talk-uh Poi-ya”) which means volcanic rock in the Maori language. Maori culture set the precedent for the design of the resort. Exciting traditions, dances, tattoo art, carvings, and other art and design can still be experienced today. The luxurious reds and corals and dynamic patterns often found in Maori art and architecture can be found in the finishes at the resort as well as in its branding. Guests staying at Toka Puia can participate in Maori welcome ceremonies and performances at the onsite Marae (Maori meeting grounds) as well as attend carving, weaving, and other Maori art classes. There are also endless adventures in the area such as hikes and tours that guests can go on using the resort’s electric vehicle shuttle service. Wrapped in a warm, mild climate, guests at the resort can enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery and fresh air year-round. Toka Puia is located on 27 private acres where guests can be immersed in full seclusion. Each suite is nestled in a different nook on the property, hidden from view of other guests. The spacious suites boast sensory amenities including private hot pools, lap pools, fire pits, outdoor lounge areas, private bars, heated flooring, king-sized beds, double rainfall shower heads, deep soaking tubs, skylights, and more. In the evenings, guests can enjoy the fire over wine and look up at the breathtaking starry sky while lying in bed. The suites are hosted in recycled shipping containers and use green energy from photovoltaic cells for a sustainable design. During the day, guests can take one of the pleasant walking trails to the spa & wellness building. Here, you can achieve deep relaxation through massages or other spa treatments, awaken your senses in the Pilates and yoga studio or weights and cardio gym, and take a refreshing afternoon swim in the sparkling pool just outside the spa doors. Dining options include room service, beautifully laid out in your suite, or the Hunene Restaurant & Bar located above the main lobby. With outdoor seating looking across the peaceful landscape, the cuisine is inspired by the traditional Maori method of slow pit cooking called hangi. The local ingredients are carefully sourced by the chef and the contemporary menu options are constantly evolving. Toka Puia is a sanctuary where guests can rest and renew their souls with opportunities to explore and learn about New Zealand’s secrets. They can acquire peace in the purposeful and beautiful design of the resort, in the Maori culture, and in the breath-taking scenery.
