Attractions 400 STATE TRAIL 240 Railroad Street, Reedsburg 800-844-3507 A 22-mile former railroad bed is now a bike, horse and snowmobile trail from Reedsburg to Elroy, passing through LaValle. The trail connects to the prestigious Elroy-Sparta trail. Bike rentals available. State trail pass is required, and available for purchase. ABLEMAN’S GORGE Located on Hwy 136, just west of Rock Springs. The gorge was formed when the Baraboo River carved a path through Baraboo quartzite, Cambrian sandstone, and conglomerate. Shear cliffs rise about 200 feet above the river, and extend for three-quarters of a mile. “The site tells a fascinating geological story of changing conditions in an ancient sea that first rose quietly against a cliff of quartzite and then, as layers of sediments gradually decreased the relief between sea floor and land, surged against the top of the cliff, wearing away quartzite and depositing a layer of cobbles and boulders across its upturned edge,” notes a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources description. Thousands of years of weathering and quarrying during the last century, have exposed virgin rock which faces the gorge. Ableman’s Gorge is owned by the DNR and the University of Wisconsin and was designated a State Natural Area in 1969. AL. RINGLING MANSION 523 Broadway, Baraboo 608-448-7455 • ringlingmansion.com This spectacular red stone mansion was built in 1905 as the home of legendary circus showman, Al. Ringling. Al. was the eldest of the five famous Ringling brothers. The Ringling Bros. Circus was at its peak when the mansion was built. The Al. Ringling Mansion is currently undergoing extensive restoration to bring it back to its former opulence and will soon feature five guest rooms. It is currently open for guided tours. Guests will see original furnishings, amazing handcarved woodwork, leaded glass, ornate murals and hand-decorated ceilings. AL. Central to APT’s mission is a commitment to making these great works accessible to as wide and varied an audience as possible as well as educating younger generations in the joys of these classic plays. Offering magnificent views from 500’ quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Devil’s Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail. This collection of log buildings from the area is nestled in the pines just 3 miles east of Reedsburg at Hwy. 33. The village features fully furnished log homes, a church, school, general store, blacksmith shop, library and three museum buildings. The village is only open Saturdays or by appointment, but it is well worth fitting into your vacationing schedule.

Circus World - Taking a Walk on the Wild Side! Circus World has gone WILD with new shows, new exhibits, new acts, and new performers. “Circus World has ramped up the thrills, the laughs, and the wild encounters – both human and animal; for an unforgettable day at the circus,” states Executive Director Scott O’Donnell. So step this way and discover what’s wild, fun, and new at Circus World for 2016. The tigers are back with Ryan Holder’s Tiger Adventures, featuring 8 Bengal and Siberian tigers. “Ryan and his tigers are a wonderful addition to our daily schedule,” says Scott O’Donnell. “After elephants, tigers are the number one request we get from our visitors.” In Tiger Adventures, Ryan demonstrates learned behaviors; talking about the lives of these majestic animals, and the threat of extinction they face in their homelands due to poaching and habitat loss. Using the Standardized Training and Reinforcement System (STARS), the tigers learn to repeat natural movements as a response to a variety of cues. Everything is created through reward and repetition; it all takes a lot of patience and a lot of meat treats. Tiger Adventure takes place in a new compound at Circus World created specifically for the tigers. They spend the majority of their day sleeping and playing in this secure enclosure. Guests can watch them play with “toys” provided for their enrichment, like logs for clawing, pools for swimming, cardboard boxes for destroying and even bowling balls. “The best part of every day,” states Ryan, “is watching the tigers be tigers.” American humorist Art Buchwald said, “There are two times when the circus means something

to people. Once when they are children and see it through their own eyes and again when they have the opportunity to see it through their children’s eyes.” Watching the Big Top Show gives everyone the chance to be a kid again. Guests are drawn into the action taking place less than 30 feet away. “It’s impossible to ignore a circus performance,” says ringmaster Dave SaLoutos, “the action is right there, the performers dazzle and amaze, and you feel and smell the elephants as they waltz past you. It touches the soul and lifts you up… there is nothing like it on earth!” The 2016 Big Top Show will be accompanied by a live band led by Prof. Larry Stout, and features the razzle-dazzle juggling of Eric Fernandes, the gyroscopic hula hoops of Irina Chapay, the unabashed joy of Dallas Zoppe’s happy rescue dogs, the supreme hilarity of clown duo Steve and Ryan, a precarious tower of chairs stacked to the roof of the tent by acrobat Adilson Fernandes, the graceful Poema Sisters on the double trapeze, and those magnificent Circus World elephants. It’s no wonder that famed entertainer Jimmy Durante said, “I LOVE A CIRCUS… it pleases grandma and grandpa, ma and pa and the kids. Amish The Amish communities of Wisconsin are centered in three general areas: in the northeastern part of the state south and east of the city of Eau Claire; in the southeast region stretching from Whitewater down to Beloit; and in the south-central region, including our very own counties of Columbia, Green Lake, Marquette, Sauk and Vernon.

Generally, all the Amish in southcentral Wisconsin are Old Order Amish, with no tractors in the fields, few telephones except at an occasional shop or along a lonely lane, hookand-eye closures on clothing instead of buttons, and small one-room schoolhouses. One can find several Amish businesses, or businesses supporting Amish heritage, along many routes in the area. Most of these roads are very old and follow the "lay of the land", and were constructed using routes in existence in the 1700's and 1800's. Once into the interior of Amish country, take your time and enjoy the drive! Please slow down and show courtesy to horse-drawn wagons and buggies – we want everyone to remain safe. Besides, scenery is always more enjoyable when viewed at a slower pace. You will wind along bluff tops, down alongside rushing creeks and through uplands dotted with farms and country churches. The lodging and food choices here are fewer but perfectly fine; ranging from country inns to family motels to cabins. Enjoy a quiet drive through Amish country and discover a simpler time and an area rich in heritage. For a map of Amish treasures for sale, stop at a local Chamber of Commerce.

From the Empire Prairie to the Mighty Mississippi, Wisconsin’s 100-mile Scenic Byway 60 follows the graceful curves of the Lower Wisconsin River. This patch of our planet sparkles, by sunny day or starry night, with the wild beauty of nature left to its own devices for thousands and thousands of years. And nowhere so apt is Heraclitus’s adage that you can’t step into the same river twice. In constant flux, the “river of a thousand isles” continuously sculpts its sandbars, shifts its channels, varies its flows, and repaints its colors, according to the whims of the weather gods. Here golden bluffs crop out of emerald hills and valleys that roll into rushing streams to the lively river. These waters beckon fishermen, canoeists, kayakers, and boaters. Here birdwatchers and botanists can go bananas while, chances are, an eagle is watching them.

As transcendent as the ancient driftless area landscape itself is the history encoded in its formations. Hundreds of effigy mound earthworks, still alive to the touch, stand today as spiritual gifts and messages from those who occupied this land in the deep past. The more recent settlements on the Byway route from Lodi to Prairie du Chien have tried to complement rather than conflict with the pristine qualities of driftless nature. Each has its own enticing history and contemporary flavor. They offer a rich range of camping, lodging, dining, outdoor and indoor recreation, archeological pursuits, and other learning options. They welcome both the seriously energetic and those who seek serious relaxation. They invite families to experience together this special place, the magic of which has inspired a local goal: No child left inside.

The history of barn decoration dates back to the mid 1800’s. Painting symbols on barns originated from traditional folk art passed along from the German and Swiss immigrants who settled the Pennsylvania Dutch region in southeastern Pennsylvania. Once these groups built their family farms and communities, they would paint small patterns on their barns to celebrate their heritage and bring good fortune. Today’s barn decorating revival became popular with a woman named Donna Sue Groves, from Adams County, Ohio. She wanted to honor her mother by hanging a colorful painted quilt square on her barn. Instead of just one quilt square, she began a community project with twenty quilts being displayed along a driving trail to encourage visitors to travel through the countryside. This was the start of our first quilt trail in America. Quilt trails are now being organized all across the country. Barn quilts are displayed around communities and then mapped out for tourists to follow these amazing works of art. They promote tourism and help draw visitors into our rural communities. Traditional stars and various quilt patterns are now being displayed on barns, homes, sheds and sides of buildings. Alumni Barn Quilt The barn quilt was constructed in honor of their son, BJ Chrisler, who served as the State FFA President in 2009-2010, State Vice President in 2008-2009 and the National FFA Officer “NOMCOM” Chairman in 2010. The FFA President’s symbol in the FFA emblem is “the Rising Sun’ which is depicted in their quilt. The border consists of blue corn kernels also from the FFA symbol. Badger Steam & Gas Barn Quilt S3347 Sand Rd. Baraboo, WI 53913 These 4 small barn quilts are on the Women’s building at the Badger Steam and Gas Property. Earl Sprecher’s four daughters Jean, Judy, Janet and Joanne chose patterns and painted them for the building. They represent the following: #1 – Sunbonnet Sue - Jean Sprecher Brew chose this pattern as she collects Sunbonnet Sue quilts. #2 – Windmill - Judy Sprecher Wehler chose this pattern as she lives on the Sprecher family farm which has a windmill. #3 – Log Cabin - Janet Sprecher-Bruski chose this pattern as she hopes to live in a log cabin some day. #4 – Schoolhouse - Joanne Sprecher Welty of Milwaukee, chose this pattern as she is the youngest in their family and is always a student of some sort.

Brian Bender Barn Quilt S40654 State Road 136, Reedsburg, WI 53959 The pattern for this quilt is a triple star, and it was painted by the Reedsburg Middle School Art Class. It was placed on the barn when the farm hosted the Sauk County Dairy Breakfast in June 2012. Breunig Barn Quilt E9430A County Road PF Prairie du Sac, WI 53578 The Breunig farm has a historical house on the farm dating back to 1869. It’s architectural style consists of the “block and stack” construction. The limestone is very popular in this area and you will notice some homes made this way. The block walls are 2 ft. thick and provide the natural insulation. Mike and Jodi Cook-Husom Barn Quilt Denzer Road North Freedom, WI 53951 This barn quilt is a rail fence pattern that was picked out by their mother on the Mike and Jodi CookHusom farm in North Freedom on Denzer Road. It was a gift to their mother and father, Monte, for their anniversary in 2011 from daughters Sara and Jodi.

It is on County Road B in Spring Green. Mike and Rhonda Enge Barn Quilt S9106 Hager Road Prairie du Sac, WI 53578 The quilt pattern chosen by Rhonda Enge is called the “Harvest Sun”. The Enge operation has an extensive amount of crop land and it is truly the harvest sun that assists them with their success each year. The red, blue, white and yellow colors are visible from many miles around as you head East toward their farmette on Hwy. PF or South on Denzer Road (Gasser’s hill). Take a drive and enjoy the beautiful agricultural landscape as you look for this bright quilt on their white barn with their donkey and sheep relaxing beneath the quilt. Jenny and Dennis Frey Barn Quilt Hwy. 60 and B Sauk City, WI 53583 The Frey Barn Quilt installed on a restored barn represents their love of the Allis Chalmers colors so that is where the colors of their barn quilt came from. She chose the “Hunter’s Star” quilt pattern using Allis Chalmers orange and gray along with some white as they are big hunters in the fall. As you drive down Hwy. 60 or Cty Rd B, Sauk City, you will see their barn sitting on the corner and the quilt installed right above their shop entry. Gale and Nancy Getschman Barn Quilts 1805 W. Pine St. (Cty Rd. BD) Baraboo, WI 53913 This barn quilt pattern is the Wisconsin Star and was

painted green and yellow honoring Gale’s John Deere tractor collection. Two years ago Nancy painted the smaller barn quilt and placed it on their garage. On their way to the Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, IA they admired the many barn quilts along the route and decided to paint one for their barn. Not knowing what to do they looked up directions on the internet. Next year they plan on making another one for the other side of the barn which can be observed from the new four lane Hwy. 12. Every year Gale and Nancy sponsor a Tractor Ride the second weekend in June. They chose this weekend because their first stop is the Sauk County Dairy Breakfast. Information on the ride can be found at www. tractorride.org/ Kevin and Barbara Jantz Barn Quilt Hwy. T Baraboo, WI 53913 As you travel down Hwy. T in the Fairfield Township past what used to be known as the Leopold Shack and Leopold Center you will come upon a beautifully painted, bright colored barn quilt on the Kevin and Barbara Jantz barn. Their farm is the first in that township with the first owner purchasing the land in 1847. Directly across the road from the barn you will see the original house where their parent’s reside today. (E12450 Cty Rd T). It is believed this barn was moved from Levee Rd in the mid 1920s to its present location. The pattern chosen by the Jantz family is known as the Ohio Star. Barbara said there is no real reason for it other than they liked the design for the colors they wanted to use. Over the winter months the family painted the quilt in their basement and had it adhered to the barn in early May. Going past their property during the summer are large annual bicycling events so we know the quilt adorning this barn will be appreciated by many throughout the year.

Area Nature Trails! 400 State Trail 240 Railroad St, Reedsburg The 22-mile 400 State Trail offers beautiful scenery, bountiful wildlife, sandstone outcroppings, rolling farmland and runs parallel with the Baraboo River. The 400 State Trail is part of the 101 State Trail System from Reedsburg to Trempealeau, linking with the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the La Crosse River State Trail, and the Great River State Trail. Devil’s Lake State Park County Highway DL, Merrimac and Baraboo Devil’s Lake has over 29 miles of trails for any skill level including amazingly scenic sections of the national Ice Age trail. Trails vary in difficulty from easy to quite challenging. Trails are not maintained in winter. Ferry Bluff State Natural Area Ferry Bluff Road, Sauk City Ferry Bluff and the adjacent Cactus Bluff tower more than 300 feet above the confluence of Honey Creek and the Wisconsin River. Ferry Bluff is open to hiking only and is closed from November 15-March 31st to protect bald eagle roosting sites. Ice Age National Scenic Trail County Highway DL, Merrimac and Baraboo The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath that highlights incredible landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails. The Ice Age Trail in Sauk County travels from Merrimac to Baraboo. The Ice Age

Trail in this region passes through some unique geological features and diverse ecological habitats, giving hikers an excellent experience of glacially shaped valleys, bluffs and drumlins while passing through prairies, savannas and woodlands. The trail also wanders though the historic City of Lodi, where you may be tempted off the trail by our restaurants, pubs, German bakery and specialty shops. Lower Wisconsin Riverway Blackhawk Unit 6950 Hwy 78, Sauk City The Blackhawk Unit area contains miles of hiking, horseback riding, and cross country ski trails and features the Blackhawk Indian battlefield and Native American effigy mounds. Mirror Lake State Park E10320 Fern Dell Road, Baraboo Mirror Lake State Park features sandstone bluffs surrounding the lake and offers 28.4 miles of hiking trails, 17.4 miles of cross-country skiing trails, 9.2 miles of mountain biking trails, and 1.2 miles of snowshoeing trails. Natural Bridge State Park County Highway C, Leland Natural Bridge State Park features Wisconsin’s largest natural arch. Directly beneath the arch is a rock shelter once used by Paleo-Indians. Natural Bridge State Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area County Highway DL, Merrimac Parfrey’s Glen is Wisconsin’s first State Natural area. At its uppermost part, the glen reaches a depth of nearly 100 feet and embraces a mountain-type stream flowing through its floor. The Glen contains rare flora of the Driftless Area. Pewit’s Nest Kessler Road, Baraboo Pewit’s Nest is natural gorge cut by a small stream. Pewit’s is between 30 and 40 feet deep and the trails are not maintained. The walking trails take you over the deep gorge. If you visit use caution as there are no railings. Sauk City Riverwalk Sauk City The Sauk City Riverwalk is a 1 mile paved path along the Wisconsin River below the Prairie du Sac dam. Spring Green Preserve State Natural Area Jones Road, Spring Green Spring Green Preserve, known as the ‘Wisconsin Desert’, features a rolling sand prairie on an old Wisconsin River terrace and harbors a unique flora and fauna that are adapted to the hot, droughty environment. Bird life is diverse and includes large numbers of rare open country birds. Tower Hill State Park 5808 County Hwy C, Spring Green Tower Hill offers a fascinating glimpse of Wisconsin history. Hike to the top of the bluff where an old shot tower and smelter house have been reconstructed. You will find an exhibit explaining the shot-making operation. The park has 11 campsites, hiking trails, picnic areas and a canoe landing.

Levee Road travels through the Aldo Leopold reserve along the Wisconsin River. Motorists, bikers and hikers can see prairie grasses, wildlife, trees and marsh along the river’s south shore.

Location: Sauk and Columbia counties. Levee Road, beginning at County T in Sauk County east to WIS 33 in Columbia County. Length: 9.8 miles Surface: Paved

Rustic Road 21 Ruff Road, Orchard Drive and Slotty Road are narrow, gravel roads. They wind through rolling rugged terrain near Natural Bridge State Park. The park is the location of the Raddatz rock shelter, the oldest documented site of primitive man in the upper Midwest. Schara Road extends along a ridge bordered by oaks, maples, basswoods and hickories. Remains of an old barn and home foundation are visible from the road. A walk during the spring and summer reveals many wildflowers along the roadside and in the open fields. Location: Sauk County. Just off County PF, follow portions of Schara Road, Ruff Road, Orchard Drive and Slotty Road. Length: 8.6 miles Surface: Gravel

Spring Green and the River Valley area are special. Somehow, this land escaped the last great Ice Age, as well as, the one before that. What you see here, and nowhere else in the Upper Midwest, is a landscape sculpted at least a half million years earlier than anything else around it. Spring Green was founded in 1857 by Welsh, English, Norwegian and German immigrants whose main industries were dairy and produce farms, lumbering, and cheese production. Open to the public every day between April 15 - October 31 from 9 am to 5 pm. From Memorial Day through Labor Day guided public tours are offered daily at 10 am, 1 pm and 3 pm and on weekends ONLY in April, May, September and October. Public tours are free with general admission and there is no need to pre-register. We suggest visitors plan to stay at least two hours.

Self-guided tours of the Shack are offered during all months without significant snow cover, during our public open hours. Self-guided visitors will explore with a brochure that includes a trail map, historic photos of the land, and background information on Aldo Leopold’s history and legacy. The trail loop at the property is approximately one mile in length. A side trail leads to the banks of the Wisconsin River through beautiful floodplain forest, where bald eagles, cranes, and other wildlife are frequently spotted. The Shack itself is shuttered and locked during self-guided tours.

Biking Trails

Lloyd Wright Tour ➊ Frank Distance: 20 miles for the long route on paved and gravel roads. The 10 mile short loop is entirely on paved roads. Difficulty: Difficult or moderate. The long route has five steep hills. The short route has two.

State Trail ➊ 400 The entire 22 miles of the 400

State Trail follows the Baraboo River valley from Reedsburg to Elroy. The trail is named for the Chicago-Northwestern passenger train that once operated on this grade. The train traveled the 400 miles between Chicago and Minneapolis/St. Paul in 400 minutes. The renovated Reedsburg Depot is the trail headquarters and the office of the Reedsburg Area Chamber of Commerce. The trail links to the Elroy-Sparta State Trail at Elroy Commons on the west end and to the Hillsboro State Trail in Union Center. Ski Resort attracts skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels to its 500 vertical feet of ski slopes. In the warmer months, those same slopes become challenging singletrack mountain biking trails that provide some of the most exhilarating mountain biking in the Midwest. As you can expect being that these are ski hills, you’ll encounter plenty of ups and downs, plus a lot of challenging features for riders of all abilities. Fast downhills and technical singletrack make this one of the best mountain bike destinations in the state. Ferry Tour ➋ Merrimac Distance: 45 miles total; 26 for the north loop, 19 for the south loop. Difficulty: Moderate to difficult. The northern loop has long, steep climbs. Caution: The entire route is on public streets and roads open to shared bicycle/motor vehicle use. Riding the separate bike trail along Hwy. 123 south of Baraboo is advised.

Lake Wisconsin

Your Getaway Awaits! Wisconsin means dark waters in a Native American language. The dark water of the Wisconsin River and Lake Wisconsin comes from the very dark roots of the Tamarack trees which line its banks in the northern part of the state and bleed a natural dye into the river. Many varieties of fish thrive in these waters, making Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River a fisherman’s paradise. The 9,500 acre lake has 57 miles of shoreline, and the lake and river have more than 18 miles of navigable waterway with a depth that varies to a maximum of 40 feet. Boaters love to dock at the many sand bars for a swim, picnic or even to camp overnight. Tourists from all over the world come here to relax and

enjoy this beautiful area. Once a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the early tribes, it is now a popular tourist destination for camping and water sports, as well as, more leisurely activities and family adventures. The Merrimac Ferry, named “Colsac” because it bridges Columbia and Sauk counties, is a highlight to experience and the only free ferry in the state. It crosses the Wisconsin River from Highway 113 in Merrimac south to the junction of Highways 188 and 113 just north of Lodi. Trip time is 10 minutes, and 15 cars (trailers too) can cross at one time. It runs 24 hours a day during the months the lake is not frozen. Top it off with a stop at a nearby restaurant or ice cream stand.
