MAYVILLE ENGINEERING COMPANY INC.

FROM SHOTGUN SHELLS TO A LEADER IN CUSTOM METAL FABRICATION

Like many of the manufacturing businesses in Dodge County, Mayville Engineering started in 1945 from humble beginnings in the small town of – you guessed it - Mayville. Also akin to businesses that started in the postwar era, MEC blossomed under the support of the community of just under 5,000 residents.

In just under eight decades, MEC has grown from a small machining company to the nation’s largest custom metal fabricator, per The FABRICATOR Magazine, with 20 locations throughout the U.S.

“Over time, we have grown quite a bit,” said Travis Moser, HR Manager for MEC. “We went from a small local company to the number one custom metal fabricator in the U.S. while also growing the MEC Outdoors business.”Since 1955, MEC has manufactured shotgun shell reloaders. Ashotgun shell reloader is a mechanism that takes a spent shell and makes it usable again by getting rid of the old primer, reshaping the shell and reloading with powder and charges it.

In 2013, the MEC Clay Target Machine product line was introduced. The machines are made to the same quality and reliability standards set forth on all MEC products. Then in 2016, a creation of a new product line evolved with the metallic

single stage press called the MEC Marksman®.

The manufacturer’s investment in the single stage press shotgun reloader is one of many smart moves MEC has made over the years, and served as a solid foundation for which it steadily built up its product line and services. Today, this includes everything from welding and laser cutting to coatings, punch press, metal stamping, and more. MEC has invested significantly in some of the most high-tech robotic forming, welding and automated material handling equipment in the industry.

As a trusted partner, MEC works with several large Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with John Deere, Volvo, Harley Davidson and Mercury Marine among them.

MEC also produces ATV frames for rollover protection, and has unique capabilities with the addition of robotic brake presses and welders, according to Moser. “Our investment in state-ofthe-art metal fabricating equipment is unmatched in the surrounding area.”

Aside from its dependable products, services

and customer-base, MEC prides itself on being known for exemplary treatment of employees. The employee-owned business employs about 500 men and women in Mayville alone, with another 2,000 spread amongst its 19 other locations. In September, 2022, MEC ranked 48 on the list of the largest closely held companies in Wisconsin, marking the 19th consecutive year it’s received this recognition. As part of the annual Wisconsin 75 program, the recognition acknowledges a business’s contributions to the communities in which it operates, the individuals who shape the business and Wisconsin’s overall economy.

“I think we provide a lot of stability with the size and diversity of what we do for our customers,” Moser said. “We offer a lot of different opportunities for people, as they can start in one position and take on different roles. We are competitive with our compensation, and I think we have proven ourselves to be a good community partner over the years.”

DIDION’S IMPACT

CLOSE TO HOME & AROUND THE WORLD

Didion, home to North America’s newest and most technologically advanced dry corn mill and bioscience facility, is celebrating fifty years. Didion has processing facilities located in Cambria, Markesan, and Johnson Creek. Our mill produces corn-based products for some of the world’s most trusted and recognized consumer product brands. Chances are, you’ve recently eaten something that contains corn processed at Didion.

In 1972, when John and Dow Didion established the Didion enterprise, they did so to help local farmers market their corn. Fifty years later, Didion Milling partners with over 500 Wisconsin multi-generational family farms, representing 140,000 acres of local corn production. Didion is proud to partner today with the sons and daughters of parents and even grandparents who sold corn to John and Dow in the early years.

For nearly half its 50-year existence, Didion has partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and USAID on the Food for Peace program. Didion provides over 100 million fortified and nutrient-rich meals to 40+ nations, primarily in Africa and Central America.

Meals that, for millions of people, wouldn’t be possible without dedicated team members passionate about feeding the world. At Didion, taking care of our work family is our top priority. So instead of just offering jobs to our growing

us for five years or more), we provide opportunities to build a life, prosper, learn, grow, and secure a future.

To do that, we’ve developed a robust package of employee benefits unique to our industry. But perhaps the centerpiece of Didion’s employee benefits program is the opportunity to better oneself – to learn and grow personally and professionally. Here are a few ways that we foster that development:

1. Our Tuition Reimbursement Program provides up to $5,250 annually to eligible employees who wish to continue their education or become professionally licensed or certified.

2. The Didion Foundation Scholarship Program, available to employees and their children, provides financial assistance to pursue further education in safety, education, or STEAAM (science, technology, engineering, agriculture, automation, and math).

3. Didion’s unique Internship Program gives college students real-life experience in the industry. Far more than a typical job shadow, we allow students to participate in real innovations and solutions that give them a significant advantage after graduation.

4. Didion’s new Training Center, located in Cambria, is a valuable resource and an

excellent investment for improving our team members’ skills. The Training Center gives team members a safe and welcoming environment to learn and grow in areas like safety and compliance, job skills, future role readiness, and personal and professional development. This new space will facilitate classroom, virtual, and blended learning, as well as activities that support knowledge transfer and hands-on experiences.

We take pride in being connected to the communities we live in as well. We support programs and initiatives that promote education and community safety through the Didion Foundation. We’ve most recently awarded over $100,000 to local law enforcement and fire departments, FFA chapters, and along with a financial contribution, helped to build the framework of a future home for a deserving family through Habitat for Humanity.

Together, we make a difference close to home and around the world. Your work matters at Didion. You matter at Didion. www.DodgeCounty.com ❘ 15

METALCRAFT OF MAYVILLE

ROOTS RUN DEEP FOR MAYVILLE’S METALCRAFT

Although it wasn’t always referred to by the same name, Metalcraft of Mayville has always had its roots planted firmly in the metal fabrication and manufacturing industry – and the community of Mayville.

Its heritage can be traced back to the Peerless Traveling Goods Company founded in Mayville in 1920. While Peerless focused on manufacturing luggage products, another Mayville business, J. Dorst Company, had its sights set on metal stamping. Eventually calling itself Dorst Metalcraft, the company began producing parts for the automotive industry, as well as parts for Peerless, until it ceased operations and was sold to Dorst Metalcraft in 1958. In the years leading up to the purchase, Dorst Metalcraft had refocused its efforts to customer-contract sheet metal fabrication.

In the early 1970s, Dorst Metalcraft was purchased by Edwin “Ned” Gallun Jr. Within a year, a new, 63,000 square-foot plant was constructed on 30 acres of land, and the company’s name changed to Metalcraft of Mayville, the name it still holds today. By the end of the decade, Metalcraft employed about 100 men and women. While it continued its tradition of metal fabrication for various industries, it also ventured into the commercial lawnmower industry with its purchase of Scag Power Equipment in 1986, whose products had been built under contract by Metalcraft since Scag’s beginnings in 1983. The Scag brand would quickly become a top choice of lawn care professionals and continues to reinforce its position today as an award-winning industry leader.

Metalcraft still calls Mayville home, but has since expanded to West Bend, Beaver Dam, and Horicon. Most recently, the company has further grown, acquiring a rotational molding plant in Horicon, now known as Metalcraft Plastics Group. In recent years, the company has further grown, acquiring an automation located in West Bend, known as Metalcraft Automation Group, and has also acquired Versatran, a manufacturer of the “Retriever” line of heavy-duty truck beds for equipment transportation. From its humble beginnings of 100 men and women workers, Metalcraft now employs more than 1,400 people between all sites in a wide variety of positions.

Metalcraft of Mayville has earned a spot as a national leader in the metal fabrication and manufacturing industry, specializing in large original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Under its subsidiaries, it has become a trusted partner in commercial & residential lawn mowing and debris/turf management equipment, as well as holds an industry leading lineup of Retriever industrial equipment carriers and turnkey manufacturing automation solutions.

Metalcraft’s focus is to be the Employer of Choice with the best work environments in regards to safety, technology, equipment and processes. With the best possible benefits, including healthcare with access to free health clinics for primary care services. Additionally, all employees receive a catered lunch from a local business during every shift on “Thank You Thursdays.”

These are just some of the many ways Metalcraft creates an engaging environment for its employees. That environment extends to maximizing individual talents. Despite its size, the company is still family-owned, and places emphasis on its people.

Customers are treated with the same care and effort in mind: Metalcraft’s corporate philosophy is to work continuously on providing excellent customer service at fair prices, and always strive to be the best no matter what they do. With a goal of growing profit under those same standards, shareholders are also part of the company’s focus, as is the community: employees are given the opportunity to work one day annually at the charity of their choice - and still get paid.

Metalcraft also partners with local schools to promote STEM learning opportunities for students through Learning Labs. These are backed by a deep curriculum from LAB Midwest, featuring

industrial grade Robotic, Welding and CNC Machining technology. Additionally, the manufacturer sponsors community events throughout its facility footprint project; such as local fireworks, summer gatherings, parades, sports teams and more.

and hopefully will continue to for another 100.

Being a good community partner is a hallmark of the manufacturer, with owners who believe in giving back to the community that have supported them for more than a century –

WAUPUN

NATURALLY INVITING

Founded in 1839, the name Waupun comes from the Ojibwe word “Waubun” which means “dawn of day.” You will find the city nestled on the southern branch of the Rock River, where the Rock River Trail begins. Along this National Waterway Trail, experience the delicious Chocolate Trail, featuring Waupun’s own Guth’s Candy Shoppe; enjoy the Art Route, featuring Waupun’s collection of outdoor sculptures; or explore the Discover It History Trail with stops at Waupun Heritage Museum and the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. As you explore, you will learn about the influence of industrialist Clarence Shaler. Shaler was instrumental in bringing major works of American art to Waupun. His Recording Angel turns 100 years old in 2023 when the city will celebrate a rededication ceremony to commemorate Shaler’s legacy. While here, plan to see the world-renowned “End of the Trail” sculpture by James Earle Fraser and participate in a walking or auto tour around the city to view a full gallery of sculptures – some commissioned and others original works of art by Shaler. Building on this rich cultural heritage, today Waupun is known for its historic downtown, unique shops and outdoor recreational opportunities that include the northern access points of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. Whether exploring

walking trails along the river’s path, hiking, biking, birding or simply relaxing, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will delight in an array of activities. Waupun amenities include camping, an outdoor aquatic center, state-of-the-art baseball complex, bowling, disc golf and an 18-hole golf course to name a few.

You will find Waupun an active, festive community where the calendar is sprinkled with fairs, festivals, open-air markets, and fun events. Each Thursday in July, enjoy Concerts in the Park. Celebrate Waupun, a free family festival, draws visitors both near and far to enjoy three days of fun and entertainment each June. The annual Waupun Truck ‘n Show, one of the largest truck shows in the country, salutes the trucking industry and features the Lights of Night Convoy during the second weekend of August each year. Best of all, you are always invited and we hope you enjoy your stay! Learn more by visiting fdl.com/ Waupun.

Juneau is the county seat of Dodge County. Close proximity to larger cities provides excellent shopping and cultural opportunities, yet one can still enjoy the small community atmosphere Juneau has to offer. Only about three miles west of the Rock River and minutes from Lake Sinnissippi and the Horicon Marsh, outdoor recreation and exploration are close at hand. The Wild Goose State Trail links the cities of Juneau and Fond du Lac. This 34 mile compacted limestone trail traverses oak woodlots, fertile farm fields, prairie remnants and sparkling streams as it runs through the rural country sides of Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties. Wildlife, scenery and level surface provide safe, easy and enjoyable biking and hiking for all ages.

Edwin Brix Vineyard & Sell Family wines is located right outside of Juneau, and is Dodge County’s first licensed winery. They grow a variety of red and white cold hardy grapes. Unlike most wineries in Wisconsin, 100% of their wines are made from grapes they grow.

The Dodge County Airport is located about 1 mile north of the city and is large enough to accommodate jet traffic.

The Juneau Chamber of Commerce holds community events throughout the year to encourage business growth and community strength.

GOLD STAR MEMORIAL TRAIL

The newest non-motorized trail in Dodge County is the Gold Star Memorial Trail which currently links the City of Mayville to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center via a separated path along Hwy 28 and Hwy TW. This trail serves as an important recreational trail for residents and visitors and serves as a memorial to fallen military service members of Dodge County and Wisconsin. The trail is for non-motorized use, primarily biking and hiking, and provides opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months.

The trail connects to miles of hiking trails at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center – riding of bikes is not currently permitted on the Horicon Marsh hiking trails. Another segment of the trail utilizing marked city roads from the Horicon Marsh at Palmatory Street to the west end of Horicon at Whitty Park is also now open.

Future segments will extend the trail to connect with the Wild Goose State Trail and on to the City of Beaver Dam to create a significant regional connection between communities.

Horicon Marsh Canoe Trail

RIVERS

Dodge County’s river system is a hidden gem that awaits adventurers!

The gentle current you’ll find on the ROCK AND CRAWFISH RIVERS make them ideal for paddling. One of the most popular launches is Harnischfeger Park on the Rock River. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available here. Paddlers can travel upstream for 17 miles to Hustisford or downstream 25 miles to Watertown.

The ROCK RIVER WATER TRAIL is proud to be a designated National Water Trail. The water trail meanders down a gentle gradient through beautiful rural and wilderness landscapes and urban riverfronts to safely carry the water traveler 320 miles from the headwaters above the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in south central Wisconsin to the Mississippi River at the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. For further information on maps, access points and descriptions of all segments of the Rock River please see www.rockrivertrail.com.

Astico Park is a favorite launching point for paddling excursions on the scenic CRAWFISH RIVER. A canoe/kayak launch and canoe/kayak rentals are available here.

The BEAVER DAM RIVER is also great for recreational paddling. Cotton Mill Park to County Road J, is a section of the Beaver Dam River that begins as an exhilarating urban paddle before quieting down towards the outskirts of town amongst suburban development, then narrowing again and alternating between wooded corridors, farmland

and finally to a wider, almost marshy stretch, before the take-out. Add in a quite handsome train bridge, some minor drops and riffles, and you have yourself a great trip if you can catch it at the right levels. Ther is a kayak launch at Cotton Mill Park. Check out Beaver Paddlers on facebook for updates on river conditions and shuttle information.

RANDOLPH

A GREAT PLACE TO GROW

Welcome to Randolph, a traditional, small town community located about an hour north of Madison and within 5 miles of fishing and recreational lakes, which include Beaver Dam Lake and Fox Lake. The village has a strong agricultural economic support from the many farmers in the area. It is proud of that heritage.

Randolph offers peaceful neighborhoods, quality schools, a variety of churches and recreational opportunities, with a beautiful park and pool. Your visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping at Feil’s Supper Club to celebrate authentic German gemütlichkeit and to sit outside and enjoy their beautiful outdoor Biergarten. Randolph is also the host of the famous FFA Alumni Community Corn Carnival, held on Labor Day every year. Enjoy the FFA breakfast, followed by the parade and more fun at the park.

Horseback Riding

Dodge County welcomes horseback riding on a separate 14-mile pathway along the Wild Goose State Trail between Highway 60 and Pautsch Road (about four miles north of Burnett). Trail terrain is generally easy riding, although special caution is necessary in areas with steep side slopes, wet crossings and near highways and roads. The trail surface is grass, dirt and wood chips and winds through wooded and open areas in the right-of-way of the Wild Goose Trail. Horses are not allowed on the limestone-surfaced trail except at designated horse trail crossings.

Snowmobile Trails

Snowmobile enthusiasts will find an interconnected system of more than 320 miles of groomed county snowmobile trails that traverse farm fields, woodlots, lowlands and the Wild Goose State Trail, with another 180 miles of unfunded “club-owned” trails available for use within the county. Trails provide access to trail systems in neighboring counties. The “club-owned” trails serve more of the local users often connecting the county trails and populated areas that provide food, service and overnight facilities. We were so impressed with everything, from the scenery to the well-maintained facilities. We didn’t get a chance to try out all of the trails but the one along the ledge was especially beautiful and the rock formations are amazing! The campsite was spacious, level, easy to access and wellspaced from neighboring sites.

The bathroom/ shower facility was especially welcome and helpful and we really appreciated having a dump station right there on the premesis. The location is very convenient as a base camp for day trips around the Marsh and surrounding area.

I’ve travelled all around the state, having lived in WI most of my life but had never been to Ledge Park before. I will certainly be back and will recommend it to others.

Thanks to Dodge County for such a wonderful vacation!

HUSTISFORD

Come visit picturesque Hustisford on beautiful Lake Sinissippi and the Rock River. It is centrally located between Milwaukee and Madison and just a short distance south of the Horicon Marsh. Launch your boat or kayak at the Neider Park boat landing and see firsthand the splendor of Lake Sinissippi and its islands. You will encounter American white pelicans, bald eagles and other wildlife. Fishing is also a popular sport on the lake where you may catch panfish, northern pike or walleye.

Enjoy our small town atmosphere and charm. We have a wide variety of shops and businesses in and around the area. From vintage and handmade treasures, hardware and home improvement supplies to garden supplies and gifts, gourmet treats and specialty items to flooring and more. Hustisford has your everyday needs covered.

Hustisford also boasts a brand-new Dollar General right off Hwy. 60 as well as two gas station/convenience stores. There are also many service-oriented businesses such as hair salons, a chiropractor, attorneys, insurance and real estate reps and massage therapists.

Industry is also present in the community with Pivot Point, RolAir, Berlon Industries and Hopfinger and Sons in the forefront. Pivot Point recently installed one of the largest and tallest American flags in the area. It stands at 150 feet tall and the flag itself is 30 feet by 60 feet. It can be seen prominently when traveling south through the village on Lake Street.

When visiting the Hustisford area, stop at one of our many bars and eateries for a refreshing drink and some excellent food. There is everything from coffee and sweet treats to sandwiches and fish fries, ice cream and pizza to wine and cheese available.

Whether you want to shop, dine or just relax, come and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the area. Hustisford will not disappoint.
