Camping with all the comforts of home Do you love being out in the wilderness but don’t particularly • appreciate camping in the wild? Then, luxury camping is for you. • Here are a few tips on how to enjoy its pleasures. • • Glamping
Buy blocks of ice, as they’ll last longer than ice cubes. Place meats and dairy products next to the ice. Store drinks in a second cooler. The cover of the cooler should be kept tightly closed at all times; open it only when necessary to keep the blocks of ice intact for as long as possible. Keep the cooler in a shady area, away from the sun. Try not to drain the water out of the cooler as the ice melts; the cool water will continue to help keep the food cold. Store the cooler in your vehicle overnight or when you’re away from the campsite; this keeps it away from wild animals, some of whom have figured out how to open coolers! Even if you have a camping stove, it is possible to cook on a campfire as well. Just be sure to check current restrictions about campfires first. Don’t cook the food in the flames, but rather on a grill, over hot coals. Portioning out the food into aluminum foil packages and cooking it over the coals is another fun way to cook when camping.
The phenomenon of glamping — luxury camping — is increasingly common.Yurts, teepees, gypsy-inspired caravans, and high-end trailers: comfy camping is gaining ground. Some hosts provide bedding, while • other locations are more oriented toward the conventional camping • crowd; for those spots you’ll need to bring an inflatable mattress with you. Place upon it your open sleeping bag, then add sheets, blankets, • and pillows, and you’re all set. Tasty meals • Even though hotdogs and burgers are standard camping fare, there’s no thing to prevent you from concocting more sophisticated meals. Just remember that the cooking of gourmet meals when cam ping requires a bit of forethought. Pre pare meats and vegetables in advance, and bring a few frozen meals that can be stored in a cooler, which is now your fridge on the go. For your breakfasts, plan on making pancakes with maple syrup; eggs and bacon; muesli and fresh fruit; or banana bread with yogurt. For your lunches, enjoy tuna rolls; bagels and sandwiches. For your suppers, prepare steaks with tinfoil packets of diced potatoes and onions; grilled chicken, corn on the cob and salad. Make sure you bring a couple bottles of your favorite wine. Yummy! Here are some tips for making the most of your camping. • Use a large, well-insulated cooler with a lid and a drain plug. • Store foods in airtight containers or zip-closure storage bags. If necessary, double-layer the packaging. • Freeze prepared foods and drinks before you’re due to leave. This will help to keep the cooler cold during your camping trip.

10 SUMMER FUN GUIDE | A Publication of Capital Newspapers
A sport that requires concentration “I played too fast.” “My shoulders weren’t in the right position.” “My feet were too close to the ball.” “I wasn’t standing pro perly, but I hit the ball anyway.” These types of comments are often heard on golf courses. Missing a shot only takes a moment of distraction or not being in just the right position. Technique plays an important role, of course, but golf also involves concentration and strength of mind. The proof? It’s estimated that golfers spend, on average, 90% of their time on the golf course thinking and 10% swinging and hitting the ball. It’s a good illustration of the importance of making the right decisions. In other words, the right balance between discipline, movement con trol and psychology will help you enjoy the game more and improve your score. You also have to learn to control your emotions. It’s often said that a golfer’s behaviour is a reflection of his or her personality. Your main aim should be to play for yourself, to give yourself a challenge. So much the better if you achieve your other goals as well. You missed your shot because you looked up or because your swing was too short? Just forget about it; move on and concentrate on your next shot. Frantically searching for the reasons behind a bad shot may haunt you for the rest of the game, which will only make things worse. Remember that you can compensate for an error with a perfect putt on the green. Golf can be a frustrating sport if you take it too seriously. Enjoy your successes and learn to accept your poorer performances. After all, this is a game, and the goal is to have fun.

Scenic Motorcycle Tours Wisconsin 60 Along The Wisconsin River The route is in southwestern Wisconsin and runs E/W along the Wisconsin River. The west end starts in Prairie du Chien where the Mississippi River intersects with the Wisconsin River along the border of Iowa/ WI. The east end is Sauk City just NNW of Madison. All you need to do is get to Prairie du Chien and head east on Route 60 the whole way to Sauk City. From there you could head Southeast into Madison. Scenery: Parallels the Wisconsin River from Madison (Sauk City) to Prairie du Chien where the Mississippi River and the Wisconsin Rivers intersect. River on one arm and spacious river valley back dropped by foothills and bluffs. Visit Villa Louis, an 1800’s villa and mansion on the Mississippi River right in Prairie du Chien. Surface: Paved Spring Green to Prairie du Chien Along the Wisconsin River From the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Center in Spring Green, go 0.1 miles on WI-23S and turn right on County Rd C. Follow County Rd C for 8.4 miles, turn R onto WI-130 and go North until WI-130
and WI-133 blend together along the Wisconsin River (heading West now). Continue West on WI-133 to the town of Boscobel (about 38miles). In Boscobel, follow all WI-133 signs until you are SE of Boscobel, and are heading West again.About 22 miles along WI-133 (2 miles past the village of Woodman), the road will make a sharp turn to the L, going South. About 0.25 miles turn R onto County Rd C again. Follow County Rd C for about 13 miles. County Rd C crosses US-18. Turn R on US-18 which takes you to Prairie du Chien, and a great ride along the Mississippi River. Enjoy! Scenery: Lots of hills, valleys, bluffs, trees, and fields along this scenic river run. Route follows the path of the Wisconsin River and although the path of the road stays mostly a distance away from the actual river, there are a few points when you come upon the river and get river views. Surface: Paved. The Endless Valley Run Starting in Barneveld, WI, take County Road T (north) and wind your way down the valley, (cross County Road H) still on T, wind your way up and over the ridge and back down-valley to State Highway 23.Turn right (north) on 23 and take it into Spring Green. Protect and enjoy our public parks Millions of people visit public parks across North America every year. Nature preserves and State parks are home to picturesque landscapes, monuments, natural wonders, and abundant wildlife. Visiting parks is a great way to enjoy the beauty of nature and learn something along the way, but such visits also come with a great degree of responsibility. The National Parks Service provide these guidelines to remain good environmental stewards when visiting popular parks and preserves. Know the laws National and State parks may be protected by state or federal law that may prohibit or restrict hunting and trapping animals to specific times of year. Wildlife living in parks may become less fearsome of people over time, especially when they grow accustomed to being fed or handled. Many parks prohibit feeding and close interacting with wildlife. Otherwise the animals may lose their hunting or foraging ability, or pose threats to people when the animals rapidly approach for an easy handout. Learn park rules so you’ll know what is acceptable behavior within its borders. Keep wild animals wild Feeding animals is perhaps one of the more dangerous things park visitors can do. In recent years, the National Park Service has had to euthanize deer, coyotes, rock squirrels, and other animals that have become too aggressive toward humans because they grew accustomed to receiving food from people. Keep your distance from wildlife. Use proper equipment to view or photograph animals from several feet away. Stay even further away from animals that are breeding, nesting or raising
young, as parents can become particularly protective of their children and turn aggressive. Keep a clean camp Camping and parks often go hand-in-hand. Keep a clean camp so you are not attracting bears and other food scavengers. Use trash receptacles and store garbage and food out of reach. Cook and clean away from your tent and immediately clean any cooking supplies after you have finished your meal. Only wood and paper should be burned, and try not to prepare food or fishing bait in close proximity to your campsite. Prepare for weather Weather can change on a dime when you’re in the wilderness. Pack accordingly, dressing in layers so you can change clothes as the weather demands. Have a flashlight and other emergency supplies available in case you get stuck in a storm. Higher elevations and exposure to the sunlight can cause severe sunburn. Always apply and reapply sunscreen. High elevations also can increase the chance of dehydration, mountain sickness (headaches, nausea and dizziness) and the aggravation of preexisting medical conditions. Avoid damaging vegetation Animals are not the only natural wonders to protect. Use caution when hiking so you do not trample vegetation. Keep pets on leashes so they do not disturb sensitive habitats. Do not pick flowers or berries and take them away from the park. Respecting local wildlife and taking steps to keep parks clean can make your hiking and camping experiences that much more enjoyable.

Bike Trails The many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-82 in southwestern Juneau County. packed, limestone trail. The trail features three tunnels along its route. The ‘400’ Trail heads east out of Elroy following the Baraboo River to Reedsburg, some 22 miles away. At Union Center, the ‘400’ Trail branches off as the Hillsboro State Trail. Elroy is located on Hwys 71, 80 & 82 in southwestern Juneau County. Information on the trails can be found by calling the Commons Trails Shop at 608-462-2410. The '400' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. The 22 miles of smooth, hard-packed limestone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south. The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 12.5 miles of seal-coated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 1992. The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails. You don’t need to hear the siren call of the sea to get involved in boating; anyone can enjoy getting out on the water. And there are so many reasons to indulge in water sports. Here are just a few. 1. Reconnect with nature. Water and blue sky meeting on the horizon, the sun beaming down, ducks splashing and stunning scenery: boating allows you to enjoy all the beauty nature can offer. 2. Spend time together. A boat trip is a great excuse to spend time with friends or family. What could be better than a day talking about everything under the sun or watching the water-skiing prowess of your guests (or their failed attempts)? It means memories and laughter for everyone to share. 3. Relax. You can’t drag yourself away from the routine of your daily life? Cast off and treat yourself to a break. There’s nothing like a boat trip and a day on the water to forget your little problems and reduce stress levels.

4. Keep fit. Perhaps sunbathing on the deck or chatting with friends isn’t very demanding, but sailing or water skiing are definitely real sports. Getting out on the water is a great way to keep fit, and you’ll see that this kind of exercise can truly become an enjoyable activity. 5. HAVE Fun. Lastly, boating is lots of fun. So do it just for the sheer pleasure of being out on the water!

Juneau County Step Back In Time at The Boorman House Mauston traces its modern roots back to the French traders in the mid 18th Century who plied the rivers of south Central Wisconsin in the mid 18th Century, but the thriving mill town of Milton Maughs was really coming into its own in 1864 when Benjamin Boorman sold his grain mill in Delton, Wisconsin and purchased the estate and sawmill of Maughs, who had died the previous year. Boorman’s first wife died in 1874, leaving him with three children. Two years later, he married Margaret Hall, the sister of his brother Clarence’s wife, and work began on the cream-colored brick 13-room Victorian mansion on the banks of the Lemonwier River. Boorman died in 1886 and was survived by his widow and four children. The Boorman House, built in 1876 for $12,000 ($257,000 in today’s currency) stands as a superb example of the craftsmanship

of that era. The house, located at 211 Union St., is listed on both the Wisconsin and the National Registers of Historical Places. According to Rose Clark, Juneau County Historical Society historian, the cream-colored brick was made locally and the interior lumber “was of the finest wood from the Boorman Mill. “There was a carriage shed, an extensive lawn and a formal garden. Several brick sidewalks extended to the street. There was a large, columned porch on the front or east side of the house and a cupola or “Widow’s Walk” adorned the roof,” says Clark. The Juneau County Historical Society purchased the house in 1987 from Edward and Mary Pierce and maintains it as the county’s historical museum with period furniture, clothing, exhibits and special events. Visitors can step back in time to the late 19th Century in this living piece of history, enjoying the detailed craftsmanship and historical feel of its grand mahogany staircase, three marble fireplaces, period stain glass, clothing, utensils and furniture, including a grand piano in the parlor. The Boorman House Historical Museum is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, 1-4 p.m., from Memorial Day to Labor Day and by appointment at any time. On the last weekend of November and the first weekend in December this Victorian beauty is lavishly decorated for a holiday open house that features carolers and entertainment, refreshments and a raffle. Donations are accepted in lieu of an admission fee. Other annual special events include an ice cream social in June and a quilt show in September. Movies help beat the summer heat
When the mercury rises, the search is on for ways to escape the heat. One way to cool off is to flock to the coast and wade through the incoming surf. Others prefer the calmer waters of a backyard pool. On days when it may be too oppressive to spend even mere minutes outdoors, it’s time to go inside. A fun way to stay cool is to head to a nearby movie theater to catch one of summer’s predicted blockbuster hits.
with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who years ago cofounded The Expendables before becoming a ruthless arms trader. Another shoot-emup summer hit in the making.
“Iron Man 3” and “The Lego Movie” are two of the top-grossing films of the last year. But there are many summer movies predicted to take the top spots. Those ready to grab their large popcorn and soft drink combos and sit down for two hours of cool air and entertainment may want to check out these planned releases.
Guardians of the Galaxy: An American pilot finds himself in space amid a universal conflict. He soon goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons. The story is based on the comic books first written by Arnold Drake and purchased by Marvel.
Godzilla: This movie is a contemporary retelling of the origin of Godzilla and will feature two new monsters in addition to the scaly giant. Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston are set to star.
If staying in an watching a flick on television or from your own private Ninja Turtles: This reboot produced by Michael Bay and starring Megan movie collection is your ideal way of cooling off, consider these movies Fox will take the beloved ninja turtles story in an entirely new direction. that will certainly put the chill on summer temps with their frosty scenery. Fans of the comic book series will certainly have ammunition to debate over whether the newer version is better than its 1990 namesake or not. Frozen: Chances are young boys and girls are still singing to the soundtrack of this wildly popular Disney animated classic. Pop that DVD in for yet How to Train Your Dragon 2: Keeping the kids amused during summer another viewing and “Let it Go.” vacation may be as simple as taking them to this animated sequel. The first “Dragon” movie explored the war between Vikings and fire-breathing Alive: This movie about the Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashes dragons. The next installment finds the dragons and Vikings working in the Andes showcases some infamous survival scenes as well as the icy filming locations. together to maintain the peace. Maleficent: Moviegoers who don’t always want to root for the good guy of the fairy tale classics are probably anxious for this Disney release. Based on the villainous titular character, and starring Angelina Jolie in the lead, “Maleficent” should be a summer blockbuster contender. Hercules: Many are aware of Hercules’ 12 labors and the tale of this would-be hero, but this movie takes on a decidedly different bent. Hercules becomes a mercenary, haunted by a sin of his past. However, Hercules is contacted to defeat a terrifying warlord, and he must once again turn to good.
The Shining: Horror enthusiasts may want to revisit any of the cinematic tellings of Stephen King’s famed novel about a grand hotel shut down for the winter in the Colorado Rockies. The Empire Strikes Back: Star Wars fans eager for the latest installments of the series can look back at the original films that helped shape the megafranchise. Viewers can once again explore the sixth planet of the Hoth system serving as the temporary base of the Rebellion. Many of these now-famous scenes were shot in a remote region of southern Norway.
The Day After Tomorrow: Super storms ravage much of the United States, The Expendables 3: Continuing with the popular franchise, Stallone, plunging the northern hemisphere into an ice age. Viewers are treated Statham, Cage, Chan, Snipes, and Lundgren join up and come face-to-face to ice-covered vistas of famous Northeastern United States landmarks, including The Statue of Liberty ensconced in a frozen harbor. 48 SUMMER FUN GUIDE | A Publication of Capital Newspapers
