Dairy family works together
STRIVES INDIVIDUALLY LYNN GROOMS
lgrooms@madison.com
DARLINGTON, Wis. – Working together and striving for individual excellence aren’t mutually exclusive at Redrock View Farms. The Carpenter family aims to do both to carry the Darlington-area dairy farm into the future. The family farm was established in 1978 by Jerry and Marilyn Carpenter. Their son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Lisa Carpenter, purchased the farm in 1995. Now the third generation of Carpenters is poised to take the farm into the future. Steve Carpenter remains actively involved in the farming operation, but is working on a transition plan. “We plan to have something in place that will be fair to everyone,” he said. Steve and Lisa Carpenters’ two eldest sons – Cody, 30, and Colton, 28 – are actively involved in the farming operation. The couple’s third son – Carson, 24 – has an off-farm job repairing and selling equipment. But he often helps with fieldwork and equipment repairs on the family farm. Steve and Lisa Carpenters’ daughter – Cora, 20 – is in her junior year studying agricultural communications at Iowa State University. Steve Carpenter has been interviewing attorneys to help prepare the business-transition plan. But he hasn’t found the right one yet, he said. Careful consideration is one of his traits, said Brian Reilly, who has worked with Carpenter for more than 20 years. “Steve has a calm demeanor, and listens to all the pros and cons before making a decision,” said Reilly, a dairy nutritionist for Premier Cooperative of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. That careful deliberation has served Redrock View Farms well, Reilly said. The 600cow herd averages 100 pounds of milk per cow per day with a somatic-cell count of less than 100,000. The farm’s rolling herd average is 30,000 pounds. On the crop side the Carpenters average between 180 and 200 bushels of corn per acre, depending on the field. Their corn-silage yields average 25 to 30 tons per acre. And they produce about 7 tons of dry matter per acre for haylage.

Farming is a family affair for the Carpenter family. They farm near Darlington, Wisconsin. From left are Cody, Carrie Jo, Cora, Lisa, Steve, Carson and Colton Carpenter. Reilly attributes the farm’s performance in part to Carpenter’s management style. “He’s an exceptional manager of people,” Reilly said. “While he monitors job performance he lets people do their job. He doesn’t micromanage.” Managing people didn’t come naturally, Carpenter said. In addition to the family there are eight full-time employees at Redrock View Farms. “One of my biggest challenges was going from managing cows to managing people,” he said. “The next challenge was learning how to manage family.” One of the keys was to give them an opportunity to shine in their own areas of re-
sponsibility, he said. Cody Carpenter earned a degree in dairy science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked for Accelerated Genetics before returning to the farm. He has assumed responsibility for the cows. Colton Carpenter earned a degree in animal science from UW-Platteville and manages the farm’s heifers as well as the cropping operation. Steve Carpenter manages the business as well as a custom-chopping business. Lisa Carpenter works off the farm as office manager for the UW-Division of Extension in Lafayette County. The family farms about 1,500 acres of alfalfa and corn. Most of the crops they grow
are fed to the cattle. Between the milk cows, heifers and dry cows, the Carpenters manage about 1,500 cattle. Dr. B.J. Jones is a veterinarian at Center Hill Veterinary Clinic in Darlington. He has worked with Steve Carpenter for more than 20 years and has observed how the family business has grown. “The Carpenters are good communicators,” Jones said. “They let each other know what they want. And I’ve been impressed by how Cody communicates with employees. He’s in tune with them on both a business and personal level.” Cody Carpenter has learned to speak Spanish. And employees are treated like family,

The Carpenter family provides customchopping services in addition to chopping its own corn for silage. Steve Carpenter said. That has helped the farm retain employees. One employee has worked at the farm for about 15 years. The last “new” employee was hired three years ago. Phil Monson is a dairy specialist at AgriKing. He became acquainted with Cody Carpenter when they were fraternity brothers in Alpha Gamma Rho at UW-Madison. Monson provides forage-treatment recommendations to the Carpenters. He attributes the farm’s strength in part to Steve Carpenter’s openness to incorporating new technologies that his sons suggest. Cow-activity sensors and total mixed rations are just a couple of examples. “Steve makes the ultimate decisions, but lets his sons run their areas,” Monson said. “And I’m impressed by how the brothers work together without stepping on each other’s toes.” To weather the dairy industry’s poor economic climate the family has worked together to manage expenses by chopping and feeding more of their own forages. They do more of their own equipment repairs. And

The 70 farmer-members work in partnership with Steve Stettler, cheesemaker at Decatur Dairy. “All of Decatur Dairy’s cheese is sold before it’s even made,” Carpenter said. Stettler markets the cheese in addition to making it. Since Carpenter has served on the cooperative’s board the business has aggressively built equity, Stettler said. “The cooperative owns the facility and the land, and oversees the milk-quality program,” he said. “I own the manufacturing business and the dairy license. Cody Carpenter, left, has introduced new technologies such as cow-monitoring systems to Redrock View Farms. The system collects and analyzes data from activity to rumination on each individual cow. The sensors can help detect heat and potential health problems. Carpenter and his father, Steve Carpenter, right, have focused on improving their dairy genetics program through careful selection of bulls as well as embryo transfer. The lineage of Redrock View Farms’ current pool of elite genetics may be traced to the Kamps-Hollow Durham Altitude Holstein family of cows.

World Dairy Expo Virtual Farm Tours have brought the best dairy operations in North America to Madison for more than 15 years. The eight dairies to be featured during this year excel in a variety of farm aspects including genetics, technology, community engagement, environmental stewardship, cow comfort and multi-generations. They represent a wide variety of sizes, locations and breeds. Virtual Farm Tours are presented daily during World Dairy Expo in Mendota Room 1 of the Exhibition Hall. They are led by the farm’s owner or manager with time for questions and an open discussion to follow. The Kieler Farms virtual farm tour will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 at World Dairy Expo, sponsored by GEA. Kieler Farms Inc. of Platteville, Wisconsin, is home to 1,800 milking cows and specializes in labor efficiency. For 72 years the Kieler family has focused on caring for their land, animals and employees. Kieler Farms utilizes a new 50-stall GEA rotary parlor equipped with FutureCow automated teat prep and Apollo post-dipping systems to efficiently milk the herd. The new parlor technology has allowed the Kielers to keep the same number of em-
ployees while tripling the herd size to 1,800 cows. Primarily consisting of Holsteins with a few Brown Swiss and Red & White cattle, the herd maintains a 91-pound daily milk-production average with 3.65 percent fat and 3.05 percent protein along with 95,000 somatic-cell count. The farm features a cross-ventilated freestall barn for the milking herd. There is a combination of individual hutches, group housing and freestall facilities to care for heifers. Kieler Farms is owned and operated by nine members of the Kieler Family and includes 3,500 acres of farm land. The Kielers are committed to the success of their community through involvement with local FFA chapters and town boards, the Platteville Chamber Ag Tourism Committee, Grant County Dairy Promoters, Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and the Premier Co-op Board of Directors. The farm has been awarded an honorary chapter degree from Platteville FFA, the 2017 Business Asphalt Award for advancing innovation in asphalt pavements and the Arthur J. Virtue Award for outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture.

The Moo-Riah Dairy virtual farm tour will be held at noon Oct. 2 at World Dairy Expo, sponsored by Quality Liquid Feeds. Moo-Riah Dairy of Melba, Idaho, was founded in 1999. It was built by Bert and Trina De Winkle and their six children; Rudi and Anne-Marije De Winkle as well as Justin and Siska Reece are still involved. The dairy is home to a 1,250 Jersey milking-cow herd. Moo-Riah Dairy maintains a 55-pound-per-day actual tank average with 5.25 percent fat and 3.9 percent protein due to a focus on feeding strategies and efficiencies. Rudi De Winkle is the nutritionist. The cows are milked in a double-20 parallel parlor equipped with Afimilk meters, sort gates and pedometers for all cows. To manage their manure the farm utilizes a separation pit, settling ponds, two lagoons, two mechanical separators and two composting facilities. Moo-Riah Dairy consists of 360 acres of corn, triticale and alfalfa managed by Bert and Justin De Winkle. The family is involved with their communities and the dairy industry. Bert De Winkle volunteers with “Love in the Name of Christ.” Trina De Winkle has served on the Dairy Farmers of America Board and currently volunteers with Love Inc. as well as serves on the board of Arrow Homeschool Co-op. The Aurora Ridge Dairy virtual farm
tour will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 at World Dairy Expo, sponsored by Semex. Aurora Ridge Dairy of Aurora, New York, is home to a milking herd of 2,075 Registered Holsteins that are milked three times each day in a double-28 herringbone parlor equipped with Afimilk. The farm began in 1985 with 65 cows and 35 heifers. Through continuous internal growth and construction of new facilities that include multiple six-row freestall barns, the herd has grown to its current size. The milking herd at Aurora Ridge Dairy maintains a 30,065-pound rolling herd average with 3.9 percent fat and 3.1 percent protein. The dairy uses separated solids from the methane digester for milking-cow, dry-cow
and young-stock bedding. The farm maintains a somatic-cell count between 110,000 and 140,000. The methane digester produces 600 kilowatts of power per hour, supplying 100 percent of the farm’s needs. The entire herd at Aurora Ridge Dairy is genomic-tested with the results determining the breeding program for each animal. The farm’s genetic plan includes in-vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, sexed semen, beef semen and conventional breeding. Genetics from the herd are exported to Japan, Germany and Canada. They can also be found in artificial-insemination stud-company programs. The farm has been awarded a Progressive Genetics Herd Award from Holstein USA. Dairy Herd Manager Dave Harvatine was recognized as a 2018 Holstein USA Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder. The farm is involved in the community and in dairy organizations. It participates in research conducted by Cornell University. Aurora Ridge Dairy is owned by partners Bill Cook, Jason Burroughs, Dave Harvatine and Dan Westfall. embrace new technology to remain profitable at Albright Jerseys LLC of Willard, Ohio. Founded in 1947 by Fred Albright’s father, Allen Albright, the farm transitioned from a stanchion barn to a double-four parlor in the 1970s, to an expanded parlor in the early 2000s to nine Lely A4 robots in 2018. During the most recent changes Albright Jerseys increased the herd size from 340 to 650 cows internally in just six years. The breeding philosophy of the commercial dairy is for profitable cows based on production and health traits. That’s accomplished using genomic young sires in the best-50 percent of the herd, with the rest receiving beef semen. The success of that practice at Albright Jerseys is seen in the rolling herd average of 20,443 pounds of milk with 4.6 percent fat and 3.7 percent protein. The dairy has best-ranking Jersey Performance Index cows, numerous awards for milk production in Ohio and the United States, and recognition in 2016 as the American Jersey Cattle Association’s Young Jersey Breeder. Prior to the 2018 robot installation, Joel Albright was working full-time at the dairy and full-time as a vocational-agriculture teacher

They were early adapters of automatic milking systems, installing their first-two Lely A3 Next Automatic Milking Systems in 2010. But tragedy struck when a tornado in September 2018 destroyed several buildings on the dairy, including the robot room and freestall barn. They had a minimal number of animals that were lost but difficult decisions needed to be made. With a desire to continue dairy farming and providing that way of life for their families, the Meyers opted to install two Lely A5 robots.
They were back milking a short three-and-ahalf months later. The robots have granted the Meyers an enhanced work-life balance while running almost 700 acres of owned and rented land. Crops grown include corn, soybeans, alfalfa and small grains. The 115-cow milking herd boasts a 28,500-pound rolling herd average with components of 3.9 percent fat and 3.1 percent protein. Maintaining and enhancing the land for future generations is important to the Meyers, as recognized by the 28 basins throughout their acreage to reduce soil loss. In addition they recently started using cover crops and a no-till management program to further reduce their impact on the land. The Ratliff Jerseys virtual farm tour will be held at noon Oct. 4 at World Dairy Expo, sponsored by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Ratliff Jerseys of Garnett, Kansas, is known around the world for its Jersey-cattle genetics. The team at Ratliff Jerseys is Christy and Ron Ratliff along with her brother Mike Kennedy. Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

As a nine-time World Dairy Expo Premier Breeder and four-time World Dairy Expo Premier Exhibitor, Ratliff Jerseys has made a significant impact in the showring at World Dairy Expo as well as other national and state shows throughout the country and around the world. Many notable cow families have called Ratliff Jerseys home, including well-known animals such as Ratliff Price Alicia, Ratliff Minister Porscha, Ratliff Sambo Martina, Arethusa Primetime DeJaVu and many others. The best cattle at Ratliff Jerseys are involved in an intensive embryo-transfer program that includes the farm’s 150-head beef herd as recipients. The Ratliffs are members of the REAP program, former recipients of the Dairy Farmers of America Milk Drop Quality Award, the 2010 Kansas Distinguished Dairy Family and the American Jersey Cattle Association’s 2018 Master Breeder. That came just a decade after Christy Ratliff was awarded their Young Jersey Breeder Award. In 35 years Christy Ratliff has bred more than 175 cows appraised at Excellent-90 percent or better. The Paulus Dairy virtual farm tour will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at World Dairy Expo, sponsored by Select Sires. of changes including building two freestall barns and a double-20 parallel parlor to accommodate the 1,550 cows currently in the milking herd. It’s owned by Mike and Lori Paulus along with their son, Andy Paulus and daughter, Tiffany Schneider. The dairy has grown most recently through the acquisitions of five different herds. That has led to a focus on improving the genetic potential of the herd by working with a mating specialist to select the right bulls and breeding the lesser-quality cows to Angus. As a family farm, people and community are at the heart of Paulus Dairy. A founding member of the Milwaukee River Watershed Clean Farm Families group, Paulus Dairy strives to minimize its environmental impact. The organization works with the Milwaukee River Watershed Conservation Partnership to provide a platform for producers and landowners to share ideas, concerns, priorities and lessons learned about agricultural-conservation efforts within the Milwaukee River Watershed. For 15 years the farm has hosted and provided animals for a 4-H group. Lori Paulus was a 4-H leader for 30 years; she’s also a church trustee. Mike Paulus is a former board member of East Central/Select Sires and Select Sires, and a current board member of the local cooperative. Andy Paulus was also on the board of directors for East Central/Select Sires. Schneider practiced as a large-animal veterinarian for more than five years before coming back home during the expansion. The Fischer-Clark Dairy virtual farm tour will be held at noon Oct. 5 at World Dairy Expo, sponsored by Allflex Livestock Intelligence. Inc. in 1972 with eight cows. Currently in partnership with their son, Jon Fischer, and his wife, Heidi Fischer, the family cares for a milking herd of 911 Holsteins in a double-20 parlor. The cows at Fischer-Clark Dairy maintain a rolling herd average of 32,651 pounds of milk, 4.25 percent fat and 3.25 percent protein – all while averaging a somatic-cell count less than 100,000 during each month of 2018. Those excellent components garnered the Sartori Cheese Yield Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The facilities have continuously been updated to match the growth patterns of Fischer-Clark Dairy. Most recently that included the construction of a tunnelventilated barn to complement the existing naturally ventilated barn. They now both house milking cows. A new heifer facility was constructed in 2012 and then expanded in 2015 in preparation for the latest milking-herd growth in 2016. The young-stock facilities include a mono-sloped four-row barn built in 2017 to accommodate 128 individual pens. A second structure was built in 2018 to house calves post-weaning before they’re moved into the established facility at 75 days old. Like many farms environmental efforts are important to Fischer-Clark Dairy. The family prioritizes soil conservation using strip-till and no-till methods along with precision technology to micro-manage additional nutrients. The family is involved in their community. Heidi Fischer gives her time as the co-general leader of the local 4-H club, serves on the Board of Directors for PPA, serves on the Edge Policy Committee and is vice-president of her church council. Mike and Sue Fischer are also involved with their church. Sue Fischer coordinates music for Sunday masses. Mike Fischer teaches catechism, serves on the church council and is involved with the Rural Life Committee.
