Three words rule at Peshtigo dairy farm LYNN GROOMS

PESHTIGO, Wis. – Three words are golden at Drees Dairy Farm – efficiency, consistency and comfort. So when the Drees family worked on a plan to expand their farm, energy efficiency was an important factor. They made a transition in 2015 from a tiestall barn to a freestall barn with tunnel ventilation and four milking robots. They

also switched from single-phase to threephase electric power with help from Wisconsin Public Service. “Our farm is on a dead-end road about one-half-mile long, but Wisconsin Public Service helped connect us with three-phase power,” said Mack Drees, herdsman at the Peshtigo-area family farm. “This has helped us be more efficient.” Please see PESHTIGO, Page 3

With the addition of milking robots the Drees family of Drees Dairy Farm near Peshtigo, Wisconsin, has been able to about double the milking herd without adding any more employees, says Mack Drees.

Let’s get together.

Mack Drees, left, manages the family’s dairy business with his uncle Dennis Drees, center, and father, Bill Drees. They milk 240 cows and farm 700 acres. Zack Drees, not available for photo, also farms with the family.

Three-phase power supply can transmit three times as much power as a singlephase power supply. It also delivers moreconsistent power. That’s important given that the Drees farm’s tunnel-ventilation system is comprised of more than 20 fans. The four robots, lighting, milk coolers and other equipment used in the daily operations of a dairy farm also require efficient and consistent electrical power. “By installing threephase power we avoided having to install phase converters,” said Chuck Imig, an agricultural consultant for Wisconsin Public SerImig vice. “That makes the system more energy-efficient.” Prior to 2015 the Drees family was milking 125 Registered Holsteins in a tiestall barn. “We were pushing the limits and it was hard work,” Drees said. He had just graduated the year before from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He and his brother, Zack Drees, wanted to farm. They wanted to join the farming business established by their grandfather, Henry Drees. And they wanted

to join in the business with their father, Bill Drees, and their uncle Dennis Drees. The farm would need to be expanded to support all of them. So after developing a plan they increased the milking herd to 240 Registered Holsteins. Given concerns about finding workers to milk cows, they also decided to install four Lely A4 milking robots. “Labor scarcity already was an issue,” Mack Drees said. “The robots are never late and they’re always consistent. The new ventilation system and robots were some of the best decisions we’ve made. We have mixing fans throughout the barn as well as the 20 fans at the end of the barn. Good air flow contributes to cow comfort. On the hottest day last July the cows peaked at an average 107 pounds per cow.” Also contributing to cow comfort are sand bedding and a consistent feed supply provided by a Lely Juno automatic feed pusher. It pushes feed to the cows every hour, he said. With the addition of the robots the family has been able to about double the herd without adding any more employees. The four Drees family members only need to rely on four part-time milkers. The robots have enabled the family to focus more attention on heifers, bull selection and cropping operations. Rib Falls Repair began in 2005 as a oneman agricultural repair shop. The owner, Roy Thorne has worked on equipment since the age of 14. He grew up on his family’s small business and dairy farm. In 2009, Roy built a new shop to run his business from. Roy also put together a mobile service operation by fully stocking a trailer with tools, various parts, and a mobile hydraulic hose press. Out of his service trailer he was able to offer repairs to various farmers, foresters, and construction operators. The mobile hydraulic hose service was something that became very popular and got the company started in the fluid power industry. The shop and mobile service now have a full range of hydraulic hoses and fittings, from standard to metric and British. Working on anything from oil leaks to engine overhauls, Rib Falls Repair’s customer base started to expand, as well as the business itself as

Roy brought on newfull-time employees to assist him in the growing operation. In 2015, Rib Falls Repair expanded to include the precision farming industry by becoming an AgLeader dealer, offering some of the most innovative products for autosteer on any make or model, new or old. This includes several GPS solutions, planter monitoring, hydraulic down force, row clutches, electric drives, the all-new SureSpeed high-speed planter meter, sprayer and application control, and harvest yield monitoring. Becoming a dealer for AgLeader also put Rib Falls Repair ahead of the game for their next line of equipment they became a dealer for: Soil-Max. This allowed them to not only sell the tile equipment needed, but also set the customer up with Ag Leader precision equipment to make for a precise, simple, and cost- effective tile installation. Soil-Max offers a lineup of equipment for agricultural drainage. Tiling a field aids in surface water relocation, resulting in better soil aeration, healthier crops, and higher yields. Another product line that Rib Falls Repair offers is Harvest International, a planter manufacturing company offering the most innovative planting solutions with their laser cut, extremely durable row units. Harvest International row units are designed with the farmer in mind making it easy to customize the planter for the customer’s needs. Most recently, Rib Falls Repair has brought on the Versatile brand. Versatile has an extensive line of North American built agriculture equipment with a reputable history in the industry. Starting in 1966, they have many years of experience and knowledge that they put behind every piece of equipment that they build. The tractors built back then were simple and durable, and have developed into the tractors of today. Versatile has a full range of horsepower throughout all the models of tractors that they offer, from 175hp all the way up to 610hp. Across the board, Versatile’s tractors are all powered by Cummins engines and each one has the largest cab in the industry. The DeltaTrack is their 4-track articulated tractor with a four-post suspended cab, increased weight, CAT TA22 transmission, and outboard planetary drives. The 4WD tractors are the first tractors that Versatile produced. In fact, they were the first company to mass produce articulated four-wheel drive tractors in 1966. Versatile has over five decades of experience building this line of tractors. The 4WD tractors also have the CAT transmission, as well as outboard planetary axles and horsepower ranging from 380hp to 610hp. Versatile’s row crop tractors vary in horsepower from 275 all the way up to 365, with universal auto-steer, durable

16-speed powershift transmission, optional suspended front end, and easy access service and maintenance points. The Nemesis is Versatile’s newest tractor. It is the only tractor in its class that is built in North America. This new tractor, with a 30-speed powershift ZF transaxle (CVT transmission is coming soon) and 6.7L stage V Cummins engine, has horsepower ranging from 175 to 210 with up to 250 horse in the future. The Nemesis has a list of factory options, making it very easy to personalize the tractor for the customer’s exact need. Some of these factory-installed options include: front-end loader, front PTO and three-point, 40 or 50 KPH transmission, suspended cab, suspended front end, and high-flow hydraulics. Versatile is committed to developing new and innovative products and improving their existing technologies while following their rich legacy of simplicity and durability, and keeping needs of the customer in mind. Although Rib Falls Repair as a business has grown and expanded, the original small business feel is something you can still experience when you visit them. At a time when mergers and acquisitions seem to be the norm,Roy is a strong believer that the era of the one-stop-shop equipment dealership is far from over, and he is excited to work with all sectors of agriculture for many years to come.

700 acres, 450 acres of which they own. They grow alfalfa, brown-midrib corn for silage, and a blend of sorghum-sudangrass, cereal rye and clover. They grow photoperiod-sensitive sorghum-sudangrass for dry cows and bred heifers. “The blend is efficient for developing heifers,” Drees said. “We also feed some of it in the milking ration.” The family makes three cuttings of the blend and applies manure after each cutting. Mike Biese, a dairy nutritionist with Intensive Dairy Care, works with the family on balancing rations. “They’re super good managers and pay attention to detail,” he said. When the robots were added to the farm the milk-cow rations needed to be readjusted. “We found that if there was too much energy in the partial-mixed ration the cows wouldn’t visit the robots as often,” he said. “We received coaching from Lely and learned how to rebalance the energy.” Data collected by the robots have contributed to the farm’s efficiency and consistency, Drees said. Data help him determine which cows need extra attention such as assistance after calving or treatment for mastitis. Data also show milk-production performance. The farm’s rolling-herd average is 31,000 pounds with 4.1 percent fat and 3 percent protein. Somatic-cell count averages less than 100,000, generally in the 80,000 to 90,000 range. The milk is

shipped to BelGioioso, which makes a variety of artisanal cheese products. The herd at Drees Dairy Farm averages 102 pounds of milk per cow per day. In the tiestall barn the herd was producing 75 to 80 pounds per cow per day. The new equipment and the electric system have been critical to improving business and energy efficiency, Drees said. “And Chuck Imig has been spectacular to work with,” he said. “He showed us where we could save money.” Imig returned the compliment. “The Drees family is good to work with; they’re the type of customers we love,” he said. “And it’s inspiring to see the generations there working together.” Lynn Grooms writes about the diversity of agriculture, including the industry’s newest ideas, research and technologies as a staff reporter for Agri-View based in Wisconsin.

John Deere unveiled at the 2019 Agritechnica farm show in Germany a number of optimization tweaks to its combines for 2020. Increasing throughput, automation and making the machines easier to use are the main changes being adapted across the ranges, according to the company. The S-Series combine’s automatic regulation of forward speed, HarvestSmart, has been optimized and integrated with the Interactive Combine Adjustment system ICA2. In situations where ICA2 cannot achieve the required grain sample due to increased levels of chaff or broken grain, or it exceeds the set loss rate, ICA2 automatically adjusts the McCullough‌ HarvestSmart system and the combine’s speed just as the driver would normally do. At the same time engine load is maintained at the desired level for maximum harvest efficiency. Side winds can have an enormous effect on the distribution of combine residues, so it will be possible on S700 Series machines for 2020 for the angle of spread to be adjusted automatically. Using global-positioning system the new AutoSwap system detects the combine’s direction of travel. It then automatically mirrors the broadcast pattern once the combine turns at the headland to move in the opposite direction. Improvement in chop quality is enabled by remote adjustment of the counter knife. The operator can assess chop quality from the comfort of the cab by checking the combine’s

reversing camera, and set the counter knife position from the seat. The previous introduction of the ActiveYield automatic yield sensor removed the need for manual yield calibrations. It relieved the operator of the stress and time involved in waiting to get results, while also increasing their accuracy, according to the company. From 2020 the system will be supplemented with a more-precise humidity sensor. That will result in a considerable improvement in data collection, especially for both low and high grain-moisture contents. Calibration intervals plus yield and humidity data will be recorded along with other important information on the combine’s documentation software. Compatibility between the open-platform MyJohnDeere.com portal and other systems is being expanded, with data transfer in the ISO XML standard possible.

New display offered for W, T W and T Series combines can now be equipped with a new fourth-generation 4640 Greenstar Display. While all combine settings are still regulated using the armrest display, all other functions can be controlled through the 4640 display. Those include guidance, documentation, data transmission and MachineSync automatic steering of the tractor-trailer combination driving alongside. The universal 4640 display is removable and can also operate SectionControl on a sprayer, for example. John Deere also launched a new 700X variable-length header for 2020. maintains the existing unit’s long 47-inch table for maximum harvesting capacity and minimum losses in oilseed rape, with the benefit of a better crop flow. The 700X headers will feature a new lowprofile feeding design to guarantee an evensmoother transition to the auger, especially for short crops such as spring barley. In addition the slip clutch position has been moved directly to the auger to minimize wear. Further durability improvements have been made, with 25-percent-thicker skid plates on all units. With increasing restrictions on the use of herbicides and crop-desiccation products, the ability to effectively combine swaths of oilseed rape, legumes and other crops is regaining importance. To pick up swaths with as few losses as possible, John Deere is offering a new 615P pickup header. It has a working width of 15 feet and is equipped with unique air-sprung support wheels. The crop is gently picked up by tines before being transferred to a horizontal belt to minimize losses. A special feature of the system is its smooth uptake, which is almost free from vibration to prevent any pod-shatter losses. The crop is then compressed by a windscreen controlled by double-acting hydraulic cylinders to ensure optimum feeding. The large 26-inch auger, with a float range of about 2 inches, is big enough to adapt to the greatest crop volumes, according to the company. It ensures the combine is constantly and evenly fed for maximum performance. Visit www.deere.com/en/harvesting/sseries-combines and www.agritechnica. com/en for more information.

All fire, no smoke Burn up to 60% less wood G2 Plus has met EPA 2020 standards since 2015 7 industry first

Burn Sustainable Biomass and Gain Your Heating Independence Polar Furnace and Portage & Main Outdoor Boilers can help. Did you know that an outdoor furnace (also referred to as a boiler) is able to provide your family with all the heat and hot water that you need? Heat your home, domestic hot water, garage, greenhouse, hot tub, swimming pool, etc. Choosing to burn forest waste is a way of taking back control of your heating costs while helping the environment. This is because burning wood is a carbon neutral heating method. Cutting up and burning a tree that has fallen to the forest floor only produces the same amount of CO2 as if the tree had been left to decay. Unlike solar and wind power, wood is a reliable source of energy 24/7. Even if you don’t have enough wood on your own property, it can be easily sourced locally. If your local State requirement says that you must use a wood gasification furnace, then the Polar G-Class is the model for you. The Polar G2 Plus has met the EPA 2020 standards since 2015. It incorporates 7 “industry firsts” – 4 of which are still exclusive to our brand.

You will have heard the phrase “often imitated, never surpassed.” The Vor-Tech combustion chamber for instance. A refractory cylinder the introduces the wood gases at an angle to enhance swirling and achieve the most complete combustion possible. Polar is the only company in North America to use this technology and Polar furnaces use 60% less fuel than old style conventional burners that you may be familiar with. If you would like to run off-grid (more people are nowadays), then you can change the pumps to ECM and be able to heat your home and hot water for less than 170 watts of electricity. The Portage & Main line of outdoor boilers are high efficiency conventional boilers that are rated in Canada to burn both wood and coal. In the USA they are legally able to burn coal. P&M’s automated pellet/coal burner models are able to burn any biomass that will flow from a storage bin, so no need for you to manually fill the boiler – the unit feeds itself. All units mentioned can be adapted to your existing heating system.

Products for 2020 aim to help RYAN CROSSINGHAM

Lee Agri-Media‌

SAN ANTONIO – Representatives from both D E K A L B a n d We s t Bred were available in the Bayer Crop Science booth at the 2020 Commodity Classic, held in late February. “(The year) 2019 was a really challenging year for a lot of our growers, so we’ve got some great products in the portfolio that we’re introducing this year,” said Kathleen McKittrick, DEKALB brand manager. This will be the first year DEKALB is offering Acceleron seed treatment across all their products, with enhanced disease control. With Acceleron farmers can control earlyto mid-season disease by reducing infections cause by Fusarium,

Hohmann

Rhizoctonia solani and Colletotrichum graminicola, according to the company. The product is automatically included on all new and select products in 2020. The added value covers more than 40 percent of the DEKALB line. Acceleron offers added value because corn fields treated with the product have shown an advantage of 3.7 bushels per acre compared to products without enhanced disease control. “When you think about our entire product portfolio, one of the things we pride ourselves on at DEKALB is consistency and reliability,” McKittrick said. “Whether it comes down to yield, late-season standability or dry down, you can really rely on DEKALB for those products.” A.J. Hohmann, U.S. marketing

Kathleen McKittrick

manager for Bayer, said his company’s goal with Acceleron is to ensure farmers are protected against whatever Mother Nature throws their way, whether growing

corn or soybeans. “If this year is a cool moist season like it has been in recent years, especially during planting, that’s where having a seed treatment can really provide dividends across different diseases,” he said. “We need to protect against these diseases to make sure the large investment farmers are making today in seed is fully protected.” Farmers always hear about fungicides and insecticides, but Hohmann said Acceleron is more than that. “Not only do we have the fungicides to protect against diseases but we have nematicides to help protect against plantparasitic nematodes, which are proven to rob up to 10 percent of yield,” he said. “We want to ensure corn or soybean plants are taking advantage of what Mother Nature is already doing in the soil to develop a healthy root system and an overall healthy plant throughout the growing season.” Please see DEKALB, Page 16

This will be the first year DEKALB is offering Acceleron seed treatment across all their products, with enhanced disease control.

Randy Longest, WestBred Wheat account manager, said the combination of Bayer’s crop-protection portfolio with WestBred genetics provides value for growers to improve productivity and profitability. “We’re continually looking to add value to the farmer, and there are a lot of innovations out there that we monitor and evaluate all the time,” he said. “If there’s an innovation in wheat that we think makes sense, we’re going to put some wheels behind it and move forward. “Whether it’s hybrids, gene editing or advanced marker-assistance breeding, we’re continuing to look at what pathway brings the most value the fastest. The last couple of growing seasons, depending where you are in the U.S., Mother Nature has not always been kind to the wheat farmer. Last spring we had extreme flooding and water in the winter-wheat areas so a lot of fields were lost. Spring wheat was delayed with all the rains in

that market area. So the big thing is to fight another day. “There were a lot of acres that didn’t turn out the way farmers wanted because of the weather, but we can’t control that. We need to focus on what we can control and that is that integrated solution offering. We’re giving farmers the opportunity to move forward. Prices aren’t where we want them to be, so the only way to offset that is to raise more bushels and dilute your costs over a greater bushel base.” Visit www.dekalbasgrowdeltapine. com and www.westbred.com for more information.

You have a choice when it comes to automating your milking system Building a new milking facility is a major decision. It involves a lot of time, research, management considerations, financial assessments and a look into the future to ensure the next generation is set up for success. It is important to find the milking solution that best fits how you want to manage your herd and employee base, while maximizing your quality of life and investment. This could mean a fully robotic rotary milking parlor, a box-style robotic milking barn, or a conventional rotary with some automated components. Knowing the options available and management considerations for each type of facility can help you make the best decision to take your farm to the next level.

The automation advantage Dairies of all sizes can benefit from labor reduction, process control, and constant monitoring available with automation solutions. Reduce labor — the labor force is becoming difficult to source and higher wages are more difficult to sustain, particularly when milk prices dip. Automation can help solve labor challenges by locking in certain costs and replacing everyday tasks with robotic technology. In some cases, automated solutions allow you to take a step back from focusing on physically intensive labor tasks and dedicate more time to cow and farm management. Process control — the ability to completely control the milk harvesting process in a consistent manner is a principle benefit to automating any portion of the milking routine. This “process control” is designed to improve cow health and milk quality, and to reduce animal stress. For the cow, “the good life is the boring life,” when everything happens the same way, every day, regardless of the time of day or employee training level.

Constant monitoring — automation success is driven by data. With automation technology, your cows are constantly monitored for variations in their normal behavior to signal when they are sick or ready to be bred, giving you improved accuracy and earlier detection than human monitoring.

You might not be ready to jump into full-scale milking automation, or don’t feel that it financially fits your operation, but are still interested in minimizing labor and maximizing throughput. If so, a conventional rotary with automated teat prep and automated post-dipping is an ideal fit for your herd.

Finding your dairy’s fit

It’s about the life of the cows…and the life of the farmer

It has been a common misconception that robots are only available in box-style configurations for smaller herd sizes. Another misconception is that milking robots are the only way to reduce labor and improve efficiency on your future milking system. The reality is that the industry has more choices than ever. Box-style robots can be a viable option for large herds – more 20-plus box systems are going into operation every day in North America. Fully automated robotic rotaries can have the same throughput potential as conventional rotaries, only with one operator. And, a conventional rotary can be fitted with automated detachers and post-dipping milking units only requiring 2-3 operators for prep and attachment – the rest of milking virtually behaves like a robotic milking system. When making your automation selection, look at all options and think about your management style to ensure long-term success. You may want to pursue complete robotic milking to reduce labor, but desire continuing to manage and feed your cows as you do today on your conventional parallel or rotary. If so, the robotic rotary parlor may be the best choice since most herd management tasks will be performed in the same manner. You may want more flexibility in your life with no scheduled milking times. Or, a desire to change your management style to fit a more individual approach to cow care, where the cows can voluntarily move through the barn as they want. If so, a box-style robotic milking system can fit your needs.

When selecting any level of automation, it is important to consider what drives the profit on your farm. Ask yourself: • How do you plan to breed cows? How is that different from now? • How will you feed your cows? How is that going to change from how you are doing it today? • How will you provide the optimum cow comfort in the freestalls? Will this differ from what you do today? • How will you manage manure while using robots? How will this differ from what you are doing today? Will it result in cleaner, healthier cows? Robotic milking is like any other business decision you make for your dairy. It is about gaining advantages, like labor savings. You have to ask yourself if the management changes needed to optimally function with robots will be a net positive for the cows and for you, as the owner/operator. Choosing the next milking system for your dairy is no small task. It is important to get out and tour all styles of barns and parlors, and work closely with your local GEA dealer, who is there to help you every step of the way. https://www.gea.com/unitedstates/robotic-milking-choices.jsp

weight distribution, as well as the consistent ride height and in-work weight distribution provided by selflevelling suspension front and rear. The sophisticated tires can operate at a lesser inflation pressure for a given load, resulting in a larger footprint that delivers increased traction and less compaction of the soil. Conversely those characteristics can be used to carry a heavier load than lesser tires of the same size without resorting to greater tire-inflation pressures. Either way operators can exploit the tires and the increased carrying capacity of the new Fastrac 4000 Series tractors to achieve greater outputs and increased productivity without compromising legal road speed. To further enhance the globalposition-system-complete technology available on Fastrac tractors, a factory-installed Trimble GFX-750 option prepares the tractor for immediate operation in the field, according to the company. Its simplicity, repeatable guidance and choice of signal-correction services has made it a popular after-market purchase. The configurable 10-inch color touch screen can be used as an ISOBUS virtual terminal for simpler implement operation. Visit www.jcb.com/en-us/products/agricultural-tractors for more information.

new owners and operators with their unique combination of speed, comfort, road safety, field traction and four-wheel-steer maneuverability – all of which contribute to increased productivity.” The maximum power and torque outputs are unchanged at 175 horsepower, 208 horsepower and 235 horsepower, according to the company, but running costs are reduced thanks to a new auto-stop feature, which eliminates unnecessary fuel use by shutting down the engine after a period at idling speed. Engine oil- and filterservice intervals have been extended from 500 hours to 600 hours. The new heavy-duty JCB axles that deliver power from the step-less or continuously variable transmission have 33 percent better load ratings than before. They also have increased durability thanks to larger hubs and bearings as well as larger kingpin bearings. The upgrades will be especially beneficial for tractors engaged in high-draft load work, Smith said, or when fitted with new tire options that help deliver even better levels of traction in the field. Permitted gross vehicle weight is increased, so larger externally mounted brake discs are fitted all round to increase braking performance. At the front the axle differential is a larger hydraulically engaged locking design rather than a limited slip unit to further enhance tractive effort when conditions are slippery underfoot. The introduction of more-advanced “Very High Flexion” or VT category high-speed-rated field traction tires will enable operators to make the most of the Fastrac’s 50:50 static

PERMANENT FOUNDATIONS Since 2004, Midwest Perma-Column® has been leading the way with a permanent foundation system combining the durability of precast concrete with the value of post-frame construction. The Perma-Column® solution is a patented design that elevates wood out of the ground via a steel bracket atop a precast concrete foundational pier. Treated wood posts and columns have their place in postframe construction but do not always serve the long-term needs of the customer. Challenging soil conditions can adversely impact the useful service life of wood columns. Poured concrete is an enduring solution but comes with a premium in materials and labor.

Wood in the ground will rot. Concrete will not. Perma-Column® elevates wood out of the ground, so your post-frame building will last for generations – guaranteed.

Need More efficieNcy iN the field this seasoN? Growing season is when things need to happen for farmers. With over 55 years of manufacturing farm equipment, Demco understands this. How can we help you perform well in the field, while also providing opportunities for efficiency? Since 1999 Demco has produced the innovative, and patented SideQuest saddle tank system. SideQuest tanks provide you with up to 1,200 gallons of capacity. By mounting the tanks to the side and rear of the tractor, you have excellent visibility while operating in the field. Using a 10 bolt hub spacer and a bearing system, 75% of the weight is mounted to the rear of the tractor, off of the rear duals. With just 25% of the weight mounted to the tractor frame, Demco SideQuest puts minimal stress on your tractor frame. Compared to other types of tractor mounted tanks, SideQuest protects the investment that you have made in your tractor. Here is a link to our SideQuest page of our website: https://www.demco-products.com/agriculture/ application-equipment/tractor-mounted-tanks/1200-gallonsidequest-side-tractor-mounts

Demco SideQuest tanks allow you to carry and apply liquid fertilizer while planting. This saves you a pass across the field and provides your crop the fertilizer it needs right at planting time. In an effort to provide you with additional opportunities for efficiency, Demco offers a three-point mounted sprayer boom to spray your crops using the SideQuest tanks for carrying capacity - https://www.demco-products.com/agriculture/ application-equipment/sprayers/three-point-sprayers/1200gallon-sidequest-1. If you need a high capacity spraying option, combine the 1,200 gallon SideQuest tanks with the Demco 600 gallon rear mount sprayer - https://www.demco-products. com/agriculture/application-equipment/sprayers/three-pointsprayers/rm-series-600-gallon. Both of these options provide you with a great spraying performance without the cost of a self propelled sprayer. For side-dressing, Demco offers a complete liquid fertilizer applicator - https://www.demco-products.com/agriculture/ application-equipment/fertilizer-equipment/1050-1250-

trailer-liquid-fertilizer-applicators and a three-point mounted toolbar that can be used with SideQuest - https://www. demco-products.com/agriculture/application-equipment/ fertilizer-equipment/60-3-point-fertilizer-toolbar. BASF highlights new products RYAN CROSSINGHAM

Lee Agri-Media‌

SAN ANTONIO – BASF has teamed with more than 1,200 growers across the country as part of its RevX Fields program, which provided growers with on-farm fungicide data. The action followed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration of BASF’s newest fungicides, Veltyma fungicide in corn and Revytek fungicide in soybeans. “There are 160 million acres of corn and soybeans grown in the (United States),” said Paula Halabicki, BASF technical marketing manager. “And when we think about how many acres are actually treated with a fungicide, it’s actually a very small percentage. We have about 120 million acres of opportunity.” Soybean crops can experience significant yield loss due to disease every year, about 420 million bushels. Corn crops lose 12 percent of production every year because of disease – 1.5 billion bushels. “To me that means there are many

opportunities to use fungicides to build our yield potentials,” she said. Crops are also exposed to many environmental stresses that can have significant impacts on yield. Depending on conditions, 60 percent to 75 percent of soybean flowers are aborted due to environmental stresses, Halabicki said. For corn there’s 1 percent of yield loss for every 12 hours of moisture stress – unless that stress takes place during pollination. Then there’s 1 percent of yield loss for every four hours of moisture stress. “There’s a big opportunity to improve the growth of our soybean and corn yield by using fungicide products,” she said. “For corn or soybean farmers, 90 percent have used a fungicide in the past. But only about 40 percent are using (them) consistently on their acres. Though we know the amount of yield loss that comes from disease and environmental stress, only 40 percent of farmers recognize that as well and are consistent with their applications. (There are) 60 percent who aren’t. Half of those are interested in using fungicides in the future.”

cloverdale vertical tmrs 5 yr Warranty on Mixers Tub & Auger

BASF surveyed farmers on what they are looking for when a company creates an active ingredient. Survey results gave several answers. ■■ Farmers want application flexibility. ■■ It’s a challenge to find time to apply those fungicides. ■■ They want consistent performance. ■■ They want to be able to use those products on their own. ■■ They want the value that companies say the product will bring to their operations.

Revysol newest triazole product BASF’s new active ingredient Revysol is the newest member of the triazole chemistry group. The group has been around since 1979, but it’s been 18 years since a new product was brought to the class. “BASF recognized the need to bring something new to the group,” Halabicki said. “Innovation is going to help in that class, but we have to bring this to farmers in a different way. We have to be able to provide them an experience if we want to

increase the opportunity for them to adopt fungicides.” Revytek and Veltyma are two BASF products that contain Revysol as an active ingredient. The products aim to maximize crop protection in heavy-disease and environmental-stress situations. According to BASF the products provide the consistency that growers are looking for; the products have performed in areas of both extreme and reduced disease pressure, as well as cases of significant environmental stress. When spraying a fungicide farmers are basically applying millions of molecules of a product to the plant, Halabicki said. The plant then needs to absorb those products. “There’s a binding pocket – a particular shape for every disease you’re trying to control,” she said. “The molecule itself is much more flexible than other molecules in its class. It can move into binding pockets and flex into the shape of that binding pocket – kind of like a key fitting into a lock.” Visit www.basf.com for more information.

Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

UltraCal InstaLime Gypsum Custom Blends Application Services

As producers strive for increased yields and improved production on their operations, soil health has become a key factor in achieving that success. One of the most important components of soil health is balancing soil pH. Soil pH can become acidic from acid parent material, utilization of nitrogen fertilizers, and from bases removed by crops. Research has shown there can be significant yield loss in row crop and hay production when the pH is at a 5.8 as compared to a 7.0. A balanced pH helps with macro and micronutrient availability, reduces fertilizer waste, improves crop establishment and microbial activity, and provides a strong return on investment. GLC Minerals, located in Green Bay, currently offers two mined lime products that growers can utilize in their operation for pH adjustment. UltraCal lime is a high calcium, finely ground lime with a Neutralizing Index (NI) of 96. UltraCal has a 37% calcium content and less than 1% magnesium content. UltraCal is a perfect fit for soils needing to improve calcium content and needing pH adjustment. InstaLime is a magnesium lime that is also finely ground and has an NI of over 100! InstaLime has around 20% calcium and 12% magnesium, making it a great fit in soils that need both increased magnesium and pH adjustment. GLC Minerals also provides a blended combination of the UltraCal and InstaLime, customized to meet your needs. Both the UltraCal and InstaLime have over 98% passing through a 60 mesh screen, which will result in a fast pH adjustment. The high NI values of our products allows for reduced application rates as compared to a 60-69 lime, which can reduce your cost per acre. UltraCal and InstaLime are cost-effective and typically significantly more affordable than similar pelletized lime products. In order to better serve our growing customer base, GLC Minerals has expanded into application services. Now growers are able to have UltraCal and InstaLime delivered and applied to their fields at rates requested by the customer. Allow us to help with making recommendations; whether you are looking to purchase and pick up products in Green Bay, or would like product delivered and spread, please give GLC Minerals a call today.
