Mayville Engineering Company Inc. From shotgun shells to a leader in custom metal fabrication Like many of the manufacturing businesses in Dodge County, Mayville Engineering started in 1945 from humble beginnings in the small town of – you guessed it - Mayville. Also akin to businesses that started in the postwar era, MEC blossomed under the support of the bedroom community of just under 5,000 souls. In just under eight decades, MEC has grown from a small machining company to one of the nation’s largest custom metal fabricators, with 20 locations throughout the U.S. “Over time, we have grown quite a bit,” said Travis Moser, HR Manager for MEC. “We went from a small local company to the number one custom metal fabricator in the U.S. while also growing the shotgun shell reloader business.” A shotgun shell reloader is a mechanism that takes a spent shell and makes it usable again by getting rid of the old primer, reshaping the shell and reloading with powder and charges it. The manufacturer’s investment in the single stage press shotgun reloader is one of many smart moves MEC has made over the years, and served as a solid foundation for which it steadily built up its product line and services. Today, this includes everything from welding and laser cutting to
coatings, punch press, metal stamping, and more. MEC has invested significantly in some of the most high-tech robotic forming, welding and automated material handling equipment in the industry. As a trusted partner, MEC works with several large Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with John Deere, Volvo, Harley Davidson and Mercury Marine among them. MEC also produces ATV frames for rollover protection, and has unique capabilities with the addition of robotic brake presses and welders, according to Moser. “Our investment in state-ofthe-art metal fabricating equipment is unmatched in the surrounding area.” Aside from its dependable products, services and customer-base, MEC prides itself on being known for exemplary treatment of employees. The employee-owned business employs about 500 men and women in Mayville alone, with another 2,000 spread amongst its 19 other locations. In November, 2021, MEC ranked 51 on the list of the largest closely held companies in Wisconsin, marking the 18th consecutive year it’s received this recognition. As part of the
annual Wisconsin 75 program, the recognition acknowledges a business’s contributions to the communities in which it operates, the individuals who shape the business and Wisconsin’s overall economy. And despite continued supply chain challenges, the company’s financial performance in 2022 and beyond is on track and business prospects remain strong, MEC’s Chairman, President and CEO Robert D. Kamphuis said in a recent news release. “I think we provide a lot of stability with the size and diversity of what we do for our customers,” Moser said. “We offer a lot of different opportunities for people, as they can start in one position and take on different roles. We are competitive with our compensation, and I think we have proven ourselves to be a good community partner over the years.” To learn more about Mayville Engineering, visit ir.mecinc.com/corporate-profile/default.aspx.

in a vast field of career options
the manufacturing Business Alliance ensures manufacturing has a seat at the table. In 2012, a group of Dodge County businesses got together to discuss some of the challenges they were seeing in the manufacturing industry. Most apparent among them was the looming worker shortage. “A few things were happening; we got busy and all of a sudden, we were in this spot where we all were just swapping people back and forth,” said Pam Korth, Human Resources Manager for Apache Stainless Equipment Corporation in Beaver Dam. “We weren’t seeing an influx of individuals coming from high school or otherwise choosing manufacturing as a career. We realized we had lost sight of telling our story.” Just like many other industries, manufacturing has been hit with an aging workforce, where retirements are leading the outflux. “In short, we have employees leaving and not enough people to replace them,” Korth said. Businesses began recognizing they needed to increase the employee pipeline. The conversation gave them the jumpstart they needed to take action. “We recognized there was power in groups of people working together,” Korth said. A small group of employers joined together with the idea of telling their story as one united business alliance. The first year they partnered with other manufacturers in Dodge County, along with the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce and a host of others who helped generate ideas and refine their focus. The MBA decided that instead of setting up a separate organization, they’d become an affiliate of the Chamber, said Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tracy Propst. “This allowed them to operate under the umbrella of the Chamber, so they could spend their time focusing on recruiting in the workforce versus running an organization.” They started by reaching out to local high schools and technical schools by providing tours of manufacturing facilities. The mission? To help people understand there is more to the
16 ❘ Dodge County Visitor+Community Guide 2022
manufacturing industry than a job: there were careers to be had. The group evolved into what it is today, the Manufacturing Business Alliance. “Our main focus is connecting high school kids with career opportunities available to them right in their own backyard,” said Nate Olson, Community Development Administrator for Dodge County. “In Dodge County, 30 percent of jobs are in the manufacturing field. A lot of people don’t realize how much more advanced manufacturing careers are. It’s so much different than the manufacturing of yesterday.”
“Career opportunities are very wide-ranging,” Olson said. “There are endless opportunities.” The MBA’s strength lies within its partnership of both public and private entities; a combination of private businesses and public organizations and groups such as the chamber, Dodge County and local school districts, to name a few. With the mission of attracting and sustaining the manufacturing industry in Dodge County, everything the MBA does centers around the idea of advocating for, serving and representing the industry, as well as promoting manufacturing as a positive career option, and partnering with educational systems to help develop talent to meet the industry needs of today as well as the future. “We want kids and their parents to know that no matter if they want to go right into the workforce upon graduation, or go to a technical college or earn a four-year degree, there are careers to be had within these facilities,” Olson said. What do these options look like? The manufacturing industry is highly diversified and includes jobs such as production workers, purchasing agents, assemblers, machinists, quality control, inspectors, testers, sorters, welders, service
technicians and engineers, among them. “Career opportunities are very wide-ranging,” Olson said. “There are endless opportunities.” The MBA helps in all facets, starting with kids looking for youth apprenticeships, job shadowing opportunities and mentoring; while making more opportunities and finding ways to help fill the void brought on by an aging workforce. Group members know working together is the quickest way to find a solution. Case in point, whenever a new business is looking to potentially set up shop in the area, the MBA touts its program. “Part of what attracts a new business to a community is knowing what the available workforce is,” Olson said. “This is a program we highlight to show we are working to address (the employee shortage), or show how it can complement the existing business community.” Both Korth and Olson acknowledge the pandemic has brought forth a new set of challenges for the manufacturing industry, as it has for many others. “It’s been tough,” Olson said. “Pre-COVID we were probably bringing about 500 kids into facilities annually. We would get good feedback from the workers, parents and kids. Now we are having to utilize more online platforms, such as virtual tours. But not every business can do that. And it’s been difficult getting employers into classrooms.” “The pandemic has changed everything,” Korth said. “We have to be creative in how we do things. Most manufacturers are considered essential, and we pay well, offer hiring bonuses … there’s been a lot of engagement and competition is awesome, but how do you tell your story during a pandemic? Everyone is looking for people, and we all have to do what we can to set ourselves apart.” Thankfully when the dust settles, the MBA will be there to help. JUNEAU
Juneau is the county seat of Dodge County. Close proximity to larger cities provides excellent shopping and cultural opportunities, yet one can still enjoy the small community atmosphere Juneau has to offer. Only about three miles west of the Rock River and minutes from Lake Sinnissippi and the Horicon Marsh, recreation and exploration are close at hand. Many established industries, from manufacturing to restaurants thrive here in Juneau. The Dodge County Airport is located about 1 mile north of the city and is large enough to accommodate jet traffic. The Juneau Chamber of Commerce holds many community events throughout the year to encourage business growth and community strength.

The shallow and narrow character of the Rock River in some locations, makes it susceptible to occasional blockages from tree falls. Short portages to get around the blockages may be necessary especially during periods of low water levels. Report any blockage areas to Dodge County Parks Central Office - (920) 386-3700 x1 or staff at the Park.

The Beaver Dam River is also great for recreational paddling. Cotton A I Mill Park to County Road J, is a section of the Beaver Dam River that begins as an exhilarating urban paddle before quieting down towards the outskirts of town amongst suburban development, then narrowing again A I and alternating between wooded corridors, farmland and finally to a wider, almost marshy stretch, before the take-out. Add in a quite handsome train bridge, some minor drops and riffles, and you have yourself a great trip if you can catch it at the right levels. Ther is a kayak launch at Cotton Mill Park. Check out Beaver Paddlers on facebook for updates on river conditions and shuttle information.

Beaver Dam Lake
As the 16th largest lake in Wisconsin, Beaver Dam Lake is the home of a variety of wildlife and fun events all year round. There are five city parks and one county park, as well as six boat landings making for easy access. The lake is well suited for non-motorized vessels like kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards (rentals available at Waterworks Park) and with 6,542 acres there is plenty of room for pontoon boats, water skiers, fishing boats and wave runners. Winter brings the snowmobilers, skiers and ice fishermen. The lake is home to a variety of fish, including northern pike, walleye, bass, catfish, bullhead and a variety of pan fish. Events in and around the lake include fish tournaments, kids Fish ‘n Fun, Lake Days celebration and The Great Beaver Paddle Festival as well as being home to the nationally recognized Beaverland Must-Ski Water Shows. Lake Size: 6,542 Acres Maximum Depth: 11 Ft.
Lake Sinissippi is a haven for wildlife. The fisheries consist of northern pike, walleye, catfish and carp. A variety of waterfowl are either residents or visitors to the lake every year. American white pelicans, sandhill cranes, blue herons, Canada geese, eagles and others provide great opportunities for bird watching. Each season brings new activities and opportunities. The Lake Sinissippi Ski Club offers “Learn to Ski” programs every summer. The LSA 4th of July Lakefest and the Venetian Nite lighted boat parade in August highlight the summer events. Water skiing, swimming, wave runners, pontooning, kayaking, and canoeing are activities enjoyed all summer long. There are many places to explore with nine islands, backwaters and feeder creeks. Winter brings ice racing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing to the snow covered ice. Lake Size: 2,855 Acres Maximum Depth: 8 Ft.

A town-owned boat landing provides good fishing and boating access on the southern end of the lake. Lake Size: 268 Acres Maximum Depth: 17 Ft.
Lost Lake

Randolph
a g r e at p l a c e t o g r o w
Welcome to Randolph, a traditional, small town community located about an hour north of Madison, bound by two counties, Dodge and Columbia and within 5 miles of fishing and recreational lakes, which include Beaver Dam Lake and Fox Lake. The village has a strong agricultural economic support from the many farmers in the area. It is proud of that heritage. Randolph offers peaceful neighborhoods, quality schools, a variety of churches and recreational opportunities, with a beautiful park and pool. Your visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping at Feil’s Supper Club, the area’s best place to celebrate authentic German gemütlichkeit. Where you can sit outside and enjoy their beautiful outdoor Biergarten. Randolph is also the host of the famous FFA Alumni Community Corn Carnival, which is held on Labor Day every year. Enjoy the FFA breakfast, followed by the parade and more fun to be had at the park.

cambria friesland The neighboring communities of Cambria and Friesland, nestled in northeastern Columbia County, are surrounded by some of the richest farmlands in the state. With their lush woodlands and marshes, they provide great hunting and hiking grounds with a vast array of fowl and wildlife in their peaceful natural habitats. The Village of Cambria offers fishing on beautiful Lake Tarrant. Both villages have lovely parks where families can go for fun and recreation. There is even a local campground where you can go for a quiet getaway! With great job and career opportunities in the area, the beautiful country atmosphere has much to offer for local residents. Within the CambriaFriesland area are two large ethanol plants, a wind turbine farm, a growing farm and produce company, several trucking firms, a large warehouse facility, and two canning companies. Opportunities and places for entrepreneurs to start a business are available in the area. Job opportunities for medical professionals and other career-minded job seekers can be found in neighboring communities within a thirty-mile radius. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the local banking facilities, restaurants, and bars. The community welcomes job-minded individuals and families to move to and work in our area. Home of the Hilltoppers, Cambria-Friesland School in the Village of Cambria encompasses students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade with an 11:1 student to teacher ratio. The school also offers extracurricular activities such as athletics, music, band, art, FFA and industrial arts. Local celebrations are held each year within the communities. The first weekend in August, Cambria hosts Park Days. Later in the month, one of the largest charity poker runs in the state goes through Cambria. In the summer, Friesland’s weekly Tuesday night band concerts continue, an over 100-year tradition. On the Fourth of July, an annual celebration is held on the Village Square in Friesland with band concerts, homemade pies, a large firework display, and other festivities throughout the day. This September, Alsum Farms and Produce will sponsor the Fall Festival and Tator Trot 5k Run, benefiting local FFA chapters. There will be something for everyone while learning about our local agriculture and businesses. Chicken BBQs and other fundraising events happen periodically within the communities. Plenty of great events and activities are hosted throughout the year! Whether you come to live or visit, we hope to see you soon to welcome you to our quiet, friendly communities! Check out CFAchamber.com and our Facebook page at Facebook.com./cfachamber for current information.

Horicon has many employment opportunities with their long standing and established businesses, such as John Deere, Kwik Trip, Horicon Bank, LeRoy Meats, Hardware Hank, Ice Cream Station, The Rock River Tap, Subway and Danny Boys just to name a few.
Friends of Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center features 5 miles of hiking trails and a 6/5 mile long canoe trail. Year-round, birdwatchers flock to the Horicon Marsh to enjoy some of the best birds in North America. In fact, Horicon has been a proud Bird City for over 9 years.
There are many community events hosted by the Horicon Chamber, Horicon Phoenix Club and Horicon Lion’s Club. An Easter Bunny Visit, Cookies & Milk with Santa, Autumn Art on the Marsh, Farmers Market and Music in the Market are just some long-standing events. Visit their websites and facebook pages for more information!

Visit Horicon Marsh
Horicon Marsh is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the contiguous United States with over 33,000 acres of wetland. Get outdoors and experience the wildlife and many seasons of natural beauty at Horicon Marsh. The marsh provides habitat for endangered species and is a critical rest stop for thousands of migrating ducks and Canada geese. Because of its importance to wildlife, Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations, is a “Globally Important Bird Area” and is a unit of the Ice Age Scientific Reserve. It has also been designated

as one the “Seven Natural Wonders of Wisconsin” and is often referred to as the “Little Everglades of the North.” Located in southeast Wisconsin, this vast wetland is only a one hour drive from Milwaukee and Madison. While the marsh in renowned for its migrant flocks of Canada geese, it is also home to more than 300 resident and migratory bird species which have been sighted over the years. Due to its international significance, scientists from around the world have traveled here for profes-

sional training to improve conservation programs in their own countries. The Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area comprises 11,000 acres of the marsh while the northern 22,000 acres is part of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. The National Wildlife Refuge was established as a breeding habitat for the Redhead Duck. Besides the over 300 bird species, other wildlife that live on the marsh are muskrats, red foxes, coyotes, turtles, frogs, bats, fish, deer, beaver, raccoons, river otters, mink and much more. Within the marsh there are hiking and bicycling trails, driving trails, two boardwalks, fishing piers, boat launches and canoe/kayak trails. Geocaching is enjoyed on the southern end of the marsh. Of course birding, photography, hiking, hunting, site seeing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and fishing are popular activities on the marsh as well. Horicon Marsh has a unique and important story to tell. The geologic features of the area, created by our last
ice age, were instrumental in providing resources for wildlife and humans alike. The human history of Horicon Marsh is rich with culture and story; however it is one of tragedy and restoration. The wildlife present today at Horicon Marsh are the result of geologic and human activities, including modern-day wildlife management. To view a movie about the history of the marsh or to see the new “Explorium”, visitors can visit Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center on Highway 28 between Mayville and Horicon. Public naturalist talks and hikes are given at both Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center and Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center throughout the year and are free and open to the public. Visitors should stop at Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center or Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Office and Visitor Center for maps and information about the marsh. There are various restrictions on certain areas of the marsh so visitors should stop for information at one of the visitor centers.

Dodge County welcomes horseback riding on a separate 14-mile pathway along the Wild Goose State Trail between Highway 60 and Pautsch Road (about four miles north of Burnett). Trail terrain is generally easy riding, although special caution is necessary in areas with steep side slopes, wet crossings and near highways and roads. The trail surface is grass, dirt and wood chips and winds through wooded and open areas in the right-of-way of the Wild Goose Trail. Horses are not allowed on the limestone-surfaced trail except at designated horse trail crossings.

Metalcraft of Mayville Roots run deep for Mayville’s Metalcraft Although it wasn’t always referred to by the same name, Metalcraft of Mayville has always had its roots planted firmly in the metal fabrication and manufacturing industry – and the community of Mayville. Its heritage can be traced back to the Peerless Traveling Goods Company founded in Mayville in 1920. While Peerless focused on manufacturing luggage products, another Mayville business, J. Dorst Company, had its sights set on metal stamping. Eventually calling itself Dorst Metalcraft, the company began producing parts for the automotive industry, as well as parts for Peerless, until it ceased operations and was sold to Dorst Metalcraft in 1958. In the years leading up to the purchase, Dorst Metalcraft had refocused its efforts to customer-contract sheet metal fabrication. In the early 1970s, Dorst Metalcraft was purchased by Edwin “Ned” Gallun Jr. Within a year, a new, 63,000 square-foot plant was constructed on 30 acres of land, and the company’s name changed to Metalcraft of Mayville, the name it still holds today. By the end of the decade, Metalcraft employed about 100 men and women. While it continued its tradition of metal fabrication for various industries, it also ventured into the commercial lawnmower industry with its purchase of Scag Power Equipment in 1986, whose products had been built under contract by Metalcraft since Scag’s beginnings in 1983. The Scag brand would quickly become a top choice of lawn care professionals and continues to reinforce its position today as an award-winning industry leader. Metalcraft still calls Mayville home, but has since expanded to West Bend, Beaver Dam, Fall River and Horicon. In recent years, the company has further grown, acquiring an automation division consisting of FJR Manufacturing out of West Bend and Gamache Systems of New Berlin, now known as Metalcraft Automation Group. Most recently, the company acquired Versatran of Watertown, a manufacturer of the “Retriever” line of heavy-duty truck beds for equipment transportation. From its humble beginnings of 100 men and women workers, Metalcraft now employs more than 1,400 people between all sites in a wide variety of positions. Metalcraft of Mayville has earned a spot as a national leader in the metal fabrication and manufacturing industry, specializing in large
original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Under its subsidiaries, it has become a trusted partner in commercial & residential lawn mowing and debris/turf management equipment, as well as holds an industry leading lineup of Retriever industrial equipment carriers and turnkey manufacturing automation solutions.
industrial grade Robotic, Welding and CNC Machining technology. Additionally, the manufacturer sponsors community events throughout its facility footprint project; such as local fireworks, summer gatherings, parades, sports teams and more.
According to Jeff Fuller, content marketing specialist for Metalcraft, despite its size, the company is still family-owned, and places emphasis on its people. “We’re not owned by a billion-dollar corporation or subject to the influence and demands of public shareholders,” Fuller said. Metalcraft’s focus is to be the Employer of Choice with the best work environments in regards to safety, technology, equipment and processes. With the best possible benefits, including healthcare with access to 24/7 free health clinics. Additionally, all employees receive a catered lunch from a local business during every shift on “Thank You Thursdays,” and have access to a free healthcare clinic for primary care services. These are just some of the many ways Metalcraft creates an engaging environment for its employees. That environment extends to maximizing individual talents. Customers are treated with the same care and effort in mind: Metalcraft’s corporate philosophy is to work continuously on providing excellent customer service at fair prices, and always strive to be the best no matter what they do. With a goal of growing profit under those same standards, shareholders are also part of the company’s focus, as is the community: employees are given the opportunity to work one day annually at the charity of their choice - and still get paid. Metalcraft also partners with local schools to promote STEM learning opportunities for students through Learning Labs. These are backed by a deep curriculum from LAB Midwest, featuring
Being a good community partner is a hallmark of the manufacturer, with owners who believe in giving back to the community that have supported them for more than a century – and hopefully will continue to for another 100.
