Case IH weed controller developed CHRIS MCCULLOUGH For Agri-View

A new machine that destroys weeds using an electric current has been developed by a Swiss company. It’s being marketed by Case IH under the XPower brand, part of a portfolio of new precision technologies. It has the potential to eliminate t h e n e e d fo r c h e m i ca l herbicides, according to the company. CHRIS T h e n ew sys te m wa s MCCULLOUGH the winner of a bronze medal in the Innovation Awards given by the SIMA organizers in advance of its big machinery show in 2019 in Paris. Developed by Swiss firm Zasso Group, the “electroherbicide” technology has been developed

in response to the need to find moresustainable solutions for weed control. Maxime Rocaboy, Case IH product marketing manager, said. “Digital herbicide technology is at least as efficient as chemical herbicides in terms of controlling weeds, and is more efficient, economic, practical and crop-safe than mechanical weeding. In addition to which it does not disturb the soil nor encourage further weed growth. “At the same time it’s more practical, safer and cheaper than scorching or burning systems used for total weed or haulm control.” During operation the XPower system converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, creating electrons that are applied through weed leaves. They work down through to the roots. The tool is adaptable to suit specific crop geometries and needs, thanks to its

modular structure. Mounted on a tractor or its implement at a working width of 4 to 10 feet, its weed contact units create a high voltage. A sensor and/or camerabased guidance system, called XPower, is controlled by the tractor’s Class 3 ISOBUS system. XPower transfers the voltage via one element on contact with the weed leaves or the ground, whereupon it travels down to weed roots. Another element touching another weed closes the electrical circuit; the weed chlorophyll is damaged immediately. The system is as effective on larger weeds as smaller weeds. “The exact weed species is irrelevant,” Rocaboy said. “And there is no risk of subsequent weather changes impacting on the efficacy of a pass with the system or, in the longer term, of herbicide resistance developing. “ T h e r e ’s a l s o n o n e e d f o r

multiple applications or complex spraying schemes. The system helps to address the gradual reduction that is occurring in the number of available herbicides, and the lack of new ones coming through. “And in addition there are no concerns over compatibility with the crop concerned. Providing the system can treat weeds growing above the crop, they will be controlled.” The dwindling number of chemical herbicides and small number of new products coming through is playing a large part in the growing problem of weed resistance to herbicide-active ingredients, he said. But balancing resistance management with the need for effective control is an ongoing challenge. “Using the electrical weed control, on See WEEDS, Page 6

its own or in conjunction with chemical and/or mechanical weed control, overcomes many of these issues in an economic manner and without requiring long approval procedures,” Rocaboy said. “Units can be adapted for different rowcrop systems, and can be controlled via ISOBUS Class 3-compatible tractors.” The system is intended to fulfil other uses as well as controlling weeds – such as tall-grass species in field crops and treatment of weeds with complex root systems such as couch. It also has the potential to aid weed control in fruit plantations between trees or bushes, making close weeding possible with no risk of tree or bush damage and no soil movement. That will prevent further weed germination and minimize soilerosion risk. Manual-labor requirements are eliminated. And the system is compatible with organic-farming principles, according to the developers. Items such as water pipes and fencing are at much-less risk

digital drilling robot for combinable crops, one of three precision-engineered smart robots developed by the company. With three products currently in its portfolio, the company’s Tom, Dick and Harry robots will feed, seed and weed arable crops autonomously, with no waste. According to the company the threesome could revolutionize food production – and end the damage that big machinery does to the soil and the wider environment.

Harry is a 1.8-meter-square – about 6-foot-square – spider-shaped robot that folds compactly. It then unfurls to provide farmers with a driverless super-accurate drill. The Small Robot Company states Harry is able to punch-plants seeds at a uniform depth, with minimal soil disturbance. “He is able to accurately record exactly where he has placed individual seeds, and feeds this data back to the Small Robot Company’s artificial-intelligence platform called Wilma, to produce a per-plant crop map,” it states. An early version of the interface for Wilma has already been on show this year. Robots

Tom and Dick are already in trial and due for development next year. Directed by Wilma, the farmbots will only feed and spray the plants that need it. They will give the plants a perfect level of nutrients. They will reduce chemicals and emissions by as much as 95 percent. The Small Robot Company was created by fourth-generation farmer Sam Watson Jones and entrepreneur Ben Scott-Robinson, who both wanted to offer farmers an innovative solution. Inspired by the work of Simon Blackmore, a professor at the National Centre for Precision Farming at Harper Adams University, the two created the idea for Tom, Dick and Harry. “Before we even started working on the technology, we looked at the pain points farmers were facing and realized the old model had to change,” the two said. “Our AI-driven operating system will give farmers a more detailed knowledge of their crop and their land, allowing them to be more efficient and environmentally friendly. This will entirely change what’s possible on the farm, and how we think about farming.” Trials of the robots have been ongoing at the National Trust’s Wimpole Estate where the Trust’s food and farming researcher Felicity Roos is working. “Big tractors are effective but environmentally damaging and inefficient,” she said. “Currently 95 percent of energy is used plowing and this is only necessary because the use of heavy machinery compacts the soil. “Small Robot Company is building robots that will seed and care for each individual plant in a crop. For farmers the increased efficiency has the potential to increase yields, and reduce input costs and so hopefully increase profits.” The Harry prototype has been developed thanks to a Horizontal Innovation Award

Nitrogen-fixing plasma reactor trialed CHRIS MCCULLOUGH

For Agri-View‌

A dairy farm in Northern Ireland is trialing a new system of reducing ammonia emissions – and producing its own liquidnitrogen fertilizer at the same time. The new concept developed by Norwegian company N2 Agri involves passing manure or digestate through a plasma reactor to produce liquidnitrogen fertilizer. The process, according to the company, will ultimately save farmers as much as 20 CHRIS percent of their artificialMCCULLOUGH fertilizer costs. It will also reduce their ammoniaproduction levels. Although the concept has moved beyond the prototype stage, it is still being tested around the world – at a pig farm in Denmark and at a 650-cow dairy farm near Templepatrick in Northern Ireland. The dairy farm is run by Robin Bingham and his son George Bingham. They installed a biogas plant a year ago, which produces electricity and supplies it into the national grid. They have a total of 1,200 cows, including dry cows and followers. They run a zero-grazing system where fresh grass is

harvested and delivered to the cows daily. Robin Bingham said the system interested him because it met his desire to farm in an environmentally friendly way. “Using this plasma reactor system will help us achieve our goals of farming more environmentally friendly while at the same time sorting out my ammonia quotas,” he said. “I see this as a potential game changer across the world, helping farmers get more from their farmyard slurry and saving them money.” The plasma reactor was installed at the farm several months ago as a trial. It’s already producing liquid nitrogen, which has been spread on test plots at the farm. “For me, reducing or even eliminating my chemical-fertilizer bill is one of the main benefits of this system,” Bingham said soon after the system was installed. “The system has only been installed one month and we have already produced our own liquid nitrogen and spread it on some grass test plots to see if the theories of faster plant growth with higher yields are feasible.” One of the founders of N2 Agri is Norwegian Rune Ingels, a chemical engineer who spent almost 30 years working in the fertilizer industry before resigning to embark on his own ideas. “We need above 95 percent moisture content in the manure to make the system

work,” he said. “Slurry has 50 percent free ammonia but digestate has around 70 percent free ammonia. “Just over 50 percent of the total nitrogen available in slurry is lost before it can be spread on the ground. However using our system we can make more nitrogen available for plants, which are also taken up quicker by the plants – increasing their growing rates and yields. There are some tweaks needed to the system the Binghams are using as it is primarily installed to test yields at the moment.” The company’s goal is to fundamentally improve global food production by enabling a farmer to produce his or her own fertilizer from manure, air and renewable energy. By installing the company’s system farmers could their savings be able to pay back the plasma reactor in about six or seven years. N2 Agri has developed and patented the technology, which uses a plasma reactor to fix nitrogen from the air. The nitrogen is then added to the manure, which causes a reaction. It stops ammonia losses as well as emissions of other greenhouse gasses, and additionally removes bad odor. Besides reduction of ammonia emissions, the system increases nitrogen content in the manure. It transforms it from a waste problem into an excellent-value fertilizer, according to the company. “Our objective is to empower livestock farmers through the introduction of low-cost scalable fertilizer production on the farm,” said Henk Aarts, N2 Agri See REACTOR, Page 15

business-development director. “Our ultimate goal is to (replace) chemical fertilizers with fertilizer produced locally on the farm from air and renewable energy. And meanwhile we work on a better stable climate and a more-sustainable livestock sector. We can also upgrade biogas digestate to a higher-value fertilizer with our technology.” In addition to the two trials in Europe the company has plans to embark on more trials further afield in places like South Africa. N2 Agri is partnering with SBI, an innovative plasma-welding company based in Hollarunn, Austria. N2 Agri and SBI are using the University of Vienna for analysis of plasma composition and temperatures. “We are not in the phase of selling machines yet, but want to show our plasma reactor and explain the working principles to the stakeholders,” Aarts said. “Our reactor is not fully developed, but we want to test it under farm conditions in an early stage to get experience with different types of manure and biogas digestate. (We want) to do field trials on different crops, which on the Bingham farm are grass plots.” The key argument to convince farmers to use the plasma reactor, he said, is to

explain that they are losing nitrogen from their livestock and slurry – nitrogen that is later supplemented by artificial fertilizer spread on the ground. There are 2.13 million tons of ammonia lost on European livestock farms alone each year – a huge loss of potential fertilizer. It’s anticipated that a farm with 150 to 200 cows will need one 25-kilowatt plasma reactor. A 600-cow herd would need three units. But the reactors can be scaled to suit the farm. “We can change the sizes of the reactor to suit the herd,” Aarts said. “We don’t have

exact prices as yet but I can tell you a reactor is cheaper than a milking robot and is the same size as one.” Visit n2.no for more information. AG CAREER DAY TO MAKE DEBUT

See Us At The Show Booth 583

For the first time Ag Career Day will be offered for youth at the 2019 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Jefferson County. Students going into seventh- through 12th-grades are encouraged to register via a Google Survey. Registering will reserve a spot on one of 20 Cheesehead Express buses that will depart from 10 different locations in the state to begin Ag Career Day’s scavenger hunt. Each bus will transport students to Farm Technology Days. Ag Career Day will use the cow-monitoring technology of Allflex Livestock Intelligence. Each student will wear a cow ear tag with a radio-frequency identification — RFID — button on it. The button will react with a beep on each scavengerhunt stop once students are scanned by the cow-monitoring wand. To receive a scan of the wand students will be asked to interact with a “Career Takeaway” question at each of the 13 scavenger-hunt stops. The career stops will range from plant-gene editing to animal handling, and from financ i a l se rv i ce s to ro b o t i c ‘19 m i l k i n g er Day Ag Care machines. The goal is to show s students expres there are m a n y possibilities to consider for a career in Wisconsin agriculture. Students will start and end their exploration in the Future Generations Area at Farm Technology Days. Two special events will be in that area. • Kim Bremmer of AgInspirations.com will present to students ways they can position support of agriculture

without becoming defensive when faced with misinformation. • Students will be asked to complete a “Thank You Farmers” note card from Culver’s with name, age, school and one thing learned during Ag Career Day. • Most buses will arrive by 9 a.m. at the Wisconsin Farm Technology Days site, with a 7 a.m. pick-up time. Students will be at Farm Technology Days for four hours to participate in the Career Scavenger Hunt, eat lunch and explore. Most buses will leave at 1 p.m. Buses farther north may arrive at 10 a.m. and leave at 2 p.m. Before jumping back on the Cheesehead Express buses to go home, students will be given an “Explore, Experience and Engage” summary brochure to begin planning their futures in Wisconsin agriculture, developed with the help of Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom. Visit www.wifarmtechnologydays. com/jefferson/ag-career-day/ for more information.

Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.
