Traditions are the foundation to the creation of our memories, and our memories uphold our traditions. It is not just the smell of the bakery you miss, or that one song that they don’t play on mainstream radio. What you feel when you recall those favorite moments is real and authentic. It is generated by the desire to reconnect with your traditions, a process many refer to as taking a vacation. Around here we just call it Friday. Throughout the summer months, the city comes alive with tournaments, sports, festivals, and recreation. Riverside Park boasts one of the best campgrounds in the country, featuring waterfront campsites, electrical hookups, fire pits, and close proximity to the baseball diamonds, playgrounds, disc golf course, beach volleyball courts, and a conveniently located dump station. It’s also within easy walking distance of the downtown shopping and dining district. Enjoy a day on the exceptionally groomed Mascoutin Golf Club green. You will find 27 holes ready to challenge golfers of all skill levels, as well as a charming pub and grill.
10 ❘ Visit Green Lake Country, WI
For the putting-impaired, the Fox River can provide you with a leisurely day of canoeing, kayaking, boating, or fishing. Bring your own or rent from one of our local establishments! Travel the waterway anywhere upstream by lockage through the Eureka Locks, which are generously funded, maintained, and operated by the local Boat Club. Regardless of where you enter the water, there is absolutely no launch fee. If you’re an outdoorsman (or woman), fill your days fishing, hiking, and bird watching for geese, sandhill cranes, and other local or migrant species alike. For those who enjoy nature, but prefer a little luxury, follow the Mascoutin Trail to Vines and Rushes Winery for a complimentary tasting with one of their knowledgeable hosts or hostesses, and indulge in the finest local wines and beers from the winery and local area brewery as live musicians paint the atmosphere. If you find yourself in the area around the months of July and August, embrace the local traditions and annual festivals. Enjoy the long standing American tradition of extravagant fireworks displays, one dollar hot dogs, and letting the kids stay up past their bedtime for the Annual Independence Day Festival. Only a few weeks later, spend the day at the Bugle Mouth Bass fishing tournament. As the final month of summer kicks off, the Boat Club brings the community together at the Boat Club Corn Roast. Know any car enthusiasts? Also soaking up the last few sweet, warm rays of summer sun is the Street Cruzers Car Show.The community also has an elaborate Farmers Market every Tuesday evening during the months of June through August, it’s very own Aquatic Center complete with multiple water slides, and
organized leagues for several recreational sports, spanning across many age groups, which take place all year round. When the summer sun has ended, hunters welcome the fall, and ice fisherman, along with snowmobile riders, encourage the winter frost. Each holiday season begins with the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Nathan Strong Park, followed by a Holiday Parade. Enjoy the smiles and laughter amidst the glimmering lights, gingerbread house contest, ho-ho-hos, and several rounds of Carol of the Bells, and start making more of your favorite memories. And just when cabin fever begins to set in, we’re ready for the Taste of Berlin fine beverage and dining event.Taking place on the firstThursday of March each year. Quench your thirst with wines from around the world, and satisfy your taste buds with some of the finest cuisine from local area restaurants. Taste of Berlin offers an all you can eat, all you can drink evening you are sure to never forget.
{
Nestled along the Fox River, only 20 minutes west of Oshkosh, time spent in Berlin offers opportunities to relax and refresh in a community that genuinely cares. You’ll find peace in our traditional comforts, from the smell of our local bakery, to the sounds of our local hometown radio station as you walk into each vintage downtown shop. Whether your interests are recreational, family oriented, or even a bit luxurious, you can always count on the city of Berlin and its residents to provide you with that real hometown feeling.

White River Marsh Wildlife Area
r e l a x • r e tr e at • r e p e at
Birdwatching Green Lake Country is blessed by its wealth of habitats for birds and wildlife, and many good birding locations have trails and are open to public access. Depending on the time of year, some places will vary considerably in what birdlife might be present, while other sites might provide great opportunities to find birds during any season. In general, the best time of year for birdwatching is spring and summer – especially April through July – when migrants are passing through, or individuals are engaged in territorial displays and breeding activities. Over 260 bird species have been found in the area, including a nice variety of waterfowl, hawks and owls, woodpeckers, thrushes, sparrows, warblers and finches. Some of the favorites include Common Loon, American White Pelican, Wild Turkey, American Woodcock, Pileated Woodpecker, Scarlet Tanager, and Indigo Bunting.
In winter, one can sometimes encounter Rough-legged Hawk, Snowy Owl, Northern Shrike, Snow Bunting, and both crossbills. Some of the unusual or rare birds that have been found here have been Iceland Gull, Yellow Rail, Snowy Plover, Summer Tanager, Carolina Wren, Bohemian Waxwing and Harris’s Sparrow. Starting relatively close to the lake, there are a number of Green Lake Conservancy sites that can provide a good birdwatching experience. One of the best is Sunnyside Conservancy, which is located along Silver Creek Inlet (off of Lakeview Dr.), and contains several lagoons and about two miles of trails. Other conservancy hiking areas include Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail, both of which are located within the Green Lake Conference Center and overlook the lake. Norwegian Bay Conservancy is another excellent place to go, and has
a long boardwalk that extends through a marsh to the shore of Norwegian Bay. More information about these and other conservancy sites can be found at the website: greenlakeconservancy.org A little further from the lake are two very large stateowned properties that can provide wonderful birding opportunities. One is the White River Wildlife Area (located north of Princeton and west of Berlin), and the other is Grand River Wildlife Area (just west of Kingston). Another good option is the Snake Creek Wetlands Trail, which follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way between Swamp and St. Marie Roads. All of these sites are marked on the maps. Kingston Dalton Area The Village of Kingston sits on Grand Lake, (locally called the Mill Pond) and borders half of the 253-acre lake. Coming into town you’ll see a park that provides a public boat landing along with parking for 10 vehicles and their trailers. The Mill Pond has some of the best fishing around, no matter the season. Bass, Panfish, and Northern are plentiful whether fishing from the shore, out in your boat, or thru the ice. Kingston Krazy Days is held every year on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. It starts with a 5K run/ walk sponsored by the Kingston Lions Club. Watch the parade and then head to the big park for festivities and food. The Kingston Fire Dept. holds a dance that weekend also. If you’re looking to stay in the area Grand Valley Campground (W5855 Cty. Roads B/H) is located midway between Kingston and Dalton. Besides camping they offer mini-golf, fishing, a swimming pool, family activities, a rec room, and free Wi-Fi. They are open April thru November for all your camping needs.
14 ❘ Visit Green Lake Country, WI
As you wander the backroads of Kingston and Dalton you will find many stores where you can shop for Amish made goods. Barry Road is lined with shops showcasing wood-crafted goods, produce, bakery items and more. At Mishler’s Country Store you will find a huge variety of bulk foods, bulk spices, produce, canned and jar goods, kitchen utensils, oil lamps, herbal medicines, doilies, cookbooks, candy, gifts, toys, and more. Across the road is Lilac Furniture Gallery, full of beautifully handmade Amish furniture and crafts. Like auctions? During the summer months you can visit the Tri-County Produce Auction and go home with the most beautiful flowers and fresh produce. Time for lunch? Stop in at Buckeez Den, N0760 County Road FF, in Dalton. Located right on the main drag, dine in or during the summer months have a seat on the patio outside. When you’re done eating you can stroll down the street to South and Main, located at 734 Main St. They have a unique inventory of vintage items, where you’ll always be able to find something un-
usual and interesting. You can also check out their Facebook page (South & Main in Dalton) to find other events going on including the Bee Inspired Market which happens a couple times a year and includes other local vendors like We Hart Junk, MJ&G Studio, and Ms. Bouvi”es Vintage Market.
{
Within a short drive of Kingston or Dalton is the Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area. The area offers many recreational opportunities. Biking, birding, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. You could spend a few hours here enjoying nature at it’s finest.

MARKESAN Area Chamber of Commerce www.MarkesanWi.com (920) 398-8023 • markesanchamber@gmail.com
Markesan is the second largest city in Green Lake County, and it’s the people that call it home that make this city a community, a GRAND community. Since 1858 Markesan, once known as Granville, has boasted an impressive, rich history, including claims to having been the 3rd richest city in the nation.
18 ❘ Visit Green Lake Country, WI
Markesan’s intriguing past can be experienced by visiting the Grand River Valley Museum and Train Depot. The tales of missing gold and even murder will be told when you step back in time at the museum. The love of the land can be seen in the extensive collection of early farming equipment and beautiful hand painted mural within the museum. Come during the summer weekends to explore. Experience old time living during the museums Heritage Days in the early fall. The Grand River winds through town and the area countryside where all kinds of wildlife can be seen. Take a leisurely walk through the downtown streets and discover the many nostalgic victorian homes and carriage houses. Venture the countryside to find horse-drawn buggies, fresh produce and craftsmanship of the large Amish population in the area. Explore their unique lifestyle by visiting their old fashion stores filled with handmade goods. For the explorers-experience Markesan for some great fishing on Little Green Lake or Lake Puckaway a short drive from town for walleye,bass, perch, bluegill and muskie, or spend a relaxing day on the water kayaking and boating. Plentiful game can be found
too. Deer, pheasant and duck hunting surrounds the area and during the winter snowmobilers will find a groomed trail system that connects the trails that run from north to south in the state. Markesan’s motto of a “grand community” is a fitting description for this wonderful place on the Grand River. The fertile agricultural soil remains a driving force behind the abundant family farms as well as the vegetable canning industry. An exceptional state of the art school system offers our youth a great learning environment. Our library holds events for young and old alike and is a great resource for those continuing their education.
{
There’s a great presence of businesses,medical facilities, financial institutions and core services create a quality of small town living which we are proud to have and extend to our visitors during their stay in our Grand community of Markesan.

Ripon www.ripon-wi.com (920) 748-6764 • chamber@ripon-wi.com
The friendly and inviting city of Ripon is an active community set among historic buildings and wellpreserved architecture from the late 19th century. City streets are dotted with eye-catching Victorian houses known as Painted Ladies. The bustling historic downtown features a variety of businesses in buildings whose architecture dates back to the 1860s.Take the walking tour of our city center to fully enjoy our beautiful architectural history. The Friday Night Concert Series at the Village Green is a summertime favorite. Cookie Daze, is a wonderful family festival featuring crafts, games, kid-made rockets and, of course, cookies! During
20
Septemberfest we celebrate the beauty of our fall season with live music, the Watson Street car and motorcycle show, a charity sponsored dog walk, local food vendors, and other fun filled activities for the whole family to enjoy. The beloved Dickens of a Christmas event kicks off the holidays the first weekend in December. The weekend features a quilt show, craft fairs, breakfast with Santa, tour of homes, enchanted forest, musical entertainment, and living windows. The living windows event which occurs on Saturday night features downtown storefronts as they come alive with scenes of Christmas. Stroll along enjoying hot cider or hot chocolate, take a horse and carriage ride, and snack on roasted Chestnuts on this weekend that is guaranteed to create holiday memories for years to come. Ripon holds a special place in our nation’s history: The Little White Schoolhouse, built in 1853, is the birthplace of the Republican Party, and a National Historic Landmark. This quaint and charming building witnessed the creation of a national movement that began on March 20, 1854. The Little White Schoolhouse is open for visitors to admire antique artifacts, to learn more about Ripon, and to
understand what school life was like for children in the 1850s. Ripon College, a nationally recognized private liberal arts and sciences school, founded in 1851, flows into the community with buildings dating back to the 19th century. The college provides cultural and sporting events open for everyone to enjoy. Renowned guest speakers visit the campus, and we are graced with performances by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and brilliant productions by the Ripon College Theatre Department.
{ { While visiting Ripon, make sure you explore our parks and trails (for walking, running, biking or cross country skiing). Visitors may also want to catch a movie at the historic Campus Cinema, founded by Ben Marcus in 1935. Ripon’s Vines and Rushes Winery is a must-stop for wine enthusiasts. These are just a few of the wonderful opportunities and fun times awaiting you in Ripon. Come. Find out why Ripon is the ideal place to live, work, play, and prosper.

With its charming local shops, its bustling antique stores, the famous Flea Market, you can spend a day, a weekend, or a week here completely transported to small-town life bursting with appeal.
Plan a day: Visit Princeton’s Famous Flea Market, held outdoors from April to October. It is the largest of its kind in the state and full of treasures, homemade, antiqued, and new. From booth to booth, you will find the perfect thing you have been looking for and the thing you never knew you needed until then. Following your robust treasure-hunting at the Flea Market, treat yourself to lunch. Relax in cozy restaurants, enjoy the sunshine at the American Legion’s award-winning brat fry, or support a local organization by picking up a burger at the Flea Market’s food stand.
24
Once full, take yourself on a date in downtown Princeton and discover the many local shops, which offer everything from American-made clothing, hand-blown glass ornaments, local wines, to specialty crafted soaps. Say hi to one of our many shop dogs, and find a gift for everyone on your list, from birthdays, to Christmases, to weddings.
Plan a weekend: Meet up with friends, or take the kids and enjoy a couple days exploring more that Princeton has to offer. Spend the afternoon discovering the hidden wonders in each of Princeton’s many antique stores. From finely crafted dressers, to delightful novelty signs, Princeton stores are a homemaker’s dream. Participate in one of the many weekend events that the town has to offer, from Wine Walks, to our rubber Chicken Fling, to our Whooping Crane Festival. Visit us Thanksgiving weekend, away from the rat race of Black Friday. This time shop local; stroll from store to store picking up along the way photos with Santa, hot chocolate, personalized cookies, and more. Stay for our Christmas in Princeton parade and feel childlike wonder again.
Plan a week: Take your time and discover the beauty of central Wisconsin and spend a week in Princeton. Stay at one of our local campgrounds, motels, or AirBnB’s. Reacquaint yourself with nature. Teach the kids how to canoe, while discovering the historic Fox River. Relish the peace and quiet while spending the day golfing, fishing or hunting. Look back in time and enjoy the slow sweet pace of small town life. Take Princeton’s Historical Walking Tour or visit a Cemetery Reenactment. And when you want to explore some more, have a tour of a local winery or family farm, and savor the taste of food and drink crafted by real people for you. Make sure to bring your bikes and traverse one of the five bikes paths stretching out through the hills and woods of the surrounding area. And there is a winter-wonderland waiting for you in Princeton with our snowmobiling trails, ice skating, and crosscountry skiing.
{
Princeton, Wisconsin is waiting for you, just an hour, or just a moment away. Come and see for yourself and make each day an adventure. For more information contact the Princeton Chamber of Commerce at 920-295-3877 or visit princetonwi.com.

Berlin is home to the Mascoutin Golf Course. Some 300 years ago, fire-worshipping Indians lived in the Mascoutin Village just south of Berlin. It was in this gently rolling setting that E. Lawrence Packard carved out a magnificent 18hole championship golf course through century old trees. The original Red and White nines opened for play in 1976 and the Blue nine opened in 1999. All 27 holes appeal to men, women and junior golfers. (27 holes) ■ for more information call 920.361.2360 or visit www.mascoutingolf.com

History Buffs
Heritage Tourism means visiting our small, quasi~rural towns, meeting a local volunteer and engaging in a wonderful conversation with someone who is passionate about our past and is eager to share our stories with you. By seeing photos of an old quarry, or holding the tools workers used, we put ourselves in their everyday lives, we imagine what their dreams must have been like. By learning how a butter churner works, to seeing doctors utensils of the early 1900’s, to admiring elegant Victorian gowns and porcelain plates, or laughing at images through a stereoscope, you have the opportunity to leave the land of today and enter the world of yesterday. Safe Driving Tips The Amish community includes Marquette, Columbia, and Green Lake Counties. When traveling in the area many motorists are not aware of how to drive when they come upon a horse and buggy. In an effort to increase the safety of all those who use the roadways in this area, here are some safe driving tips.
1 Dim your headlamps when you meet a horse and buggy at night. As you might expect the horses have difficulty when they have to stare into bright headlights. 2 Give a wide berth when passing a horse and buggy. Driving closely to the horse may startle it, and cause the buggy operator to lose control. 3 Avoid rapid acceleration or unnecessary vehicle noises when passing or near a horse and buggy, loud noises may startle the horse as well. Following a few simple tips as a motorist will help make our roadways safer. call 920.294.1050
