welcome
On behalf of the Mayville Area Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Mayville, we invite you to explore everything Mayville has to offer. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a 1st time visitor, we hope that the history is rich and plentiful. Mayville was first settled in 1845 by the families of
Chester May and Alvin Foster with a saw mill. Shortly after this, the discovery of iron ore in the area lead to a rapid growth of the settlement. Full of industrious, hard working, and friendly people, Mayville gained the reputation as Dodge County’s most progressive city. As the iron industry grew in Mayville, so did its downtown, hosting an array of businesses from cigar factories and breweries, to piano and creameries. Once the country moved from iron to steel, that same spirit helped Mayville transition into a manufacturing and farming community. Unlike many other iron cities across the country, Mayville and its downtown was able to prosper. Most of the historic buildings are still present today. Mayville is a city with a rich history that includes many innovations, including: the roots of John Deere, cheese packaged into wedges, the shotshell reloader, milk trucks, and aircraft carrier net. That progressive tradition continues today with Mayville being the first city in Dodge County to allow sidewalk dining, hosting an array of unique shopping, and the area’s best restaurants. We hope you enjoy Mayville’s rich history, our energizing present, and return for the exciting future.

The museum of the Mayville Historical Society occupies what once was the home and workplace of John Hollenstein and family. Hollenstein came to the Mayville area in 1873, where they worked a small farm. Hollenstein started making wagons and carriages with blacksmith William Albrecht in a building on North Main Street. Hollenstein set up his own wagon and carriage business, erecting a factory east of his home. He operated his shop until 1908, and then sold it to his son, John Hollenstein Jr., who continued the business until 1941. Anton Jagow purchased the factory building in 1945. He made and repaired farm wagons, built wooden truck bodies, wooden folding chairs and other items. Algot Streed bought the building in 1953 and ran the tool and die operation there until 1967. Then James Gilboy purchased the facility but never occupied it. Ted and Grace Bachhuber donated funds to enable the Mayville Historical Society to buy the building.
The two additions were originally for a blacksmith shop and power plant. The museum displays several wagons, carriages and sleighs made in the factory; in addition to these, we have an old bank interior (Knowles), military displays, a mounted eagle that Harley Davidson photographed for some of their advertising, printing press equipment, a dentist’s office, and a lot of Mayville marked items from yesteryear.
We also have many pictures and maps showing the early history of Mayville.
The Carriage Factory consists of the main factory building on the corner of Bridge and German Streets plus two additions to the north of the building.

This lovely rectangular house with its long porches was built in 1876. It originally was the home of Charles Ruedebusch, the founder of the Ruedebusch Department Store. It would remain in his family until 1941 when the local American Legion purchased it for their club house.
Built for Robert H. Butter in 1893, this home is a fine example of successful restoration efforts. Note the tower, encircling porch (reopened in the 1993 renovation), steep roofs, fish-scale shingles, and decorative detail that the careful selection of colors beautifully highlights.

This unique home is one of the few remaining residential buildings in existence in Mayville’s historic downtown. It was built in two parts, the northern section in 1852, and the southern part in the early 1900s. Dennis Bromley was the first owner. In 1993 the current owners did extensive restoration.
This house was the “dream home” built in 1928 by Gustaf and Adele Reeding. Its construction “wraps around” the original 1880s home still on the site. Unique elements are leaded panes, French doors, and weeping mortar with the stone and brick.

Open 1st & 3rd Sundays each month. May - October |1:30pm - 4:30pm Mayville’s “White Limestone School” building was used as a public school for 125 years, from 1857 to 1981. During part of that tenure (1880-1897), the school housed children from kindergarten through high school. The first high school principal was J. M. Turner. In 1883, Emma Garling, Addie Williams, and Rudolph Sauerhering were graduated as the first high school class after a three-year course. In 1968, due to its deteriorated condition, the cupola was removed from the school. In 1997, 29 years later, a replica of the original cupola was restored to the building. It’s 15 feet in diameter, stands 35 feet tall, and “Old Glory” proudly flies once again from a 20-foot flag pole above the dome. The base is surrounded by a beautiful railing with 144 turned
spindles. This restoration project was financed by the late Ted Bachhuber and has been dedicated to his memory. The White Limestone School Building has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1976.

Horicon marsh explorium
This summer, beginning with the grand opening on August 22, guests will have a unique opportunity to travel through time as they explore some of the exciting new features on display at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center in Horicon, Wisconsin. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point arrowhead, that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time.
Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans. Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves. These exhibits are just a taste of the many educational themes the new Explorium will feature. Radke Memorial Take some time to read about Mr. Curley Radke, a local citizen who was instrumental in Horicon Marsh becoming the place that it is today.

gold star memorial trail
Proposed 15 Miles (Mayville to Beaver Dam) Connecting Communities and Remembering
The proposed Gold Star Memorial Trail (GSMT) is an exciting initiative progressing in Dodge County, Wisconsin that will provide an important recreational trail facility for the citizens of Dodge County and its visitors and serve as a memorial to fallen service members of Dodge County. The proposed trail will stretch from the City of Beaver Dam to the City of Mayville, traversing approximately 15 miles. The trail will be for nonmotorized use, primarily biking and hiking, and will provide opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months. The trail connection between the cities of Beaver Dam and Mayville would provide important non-motorized trail links to the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area and its world class Education and Visitor Center (opening in 2015), the City of Horicon, the Wild Goose State Trail and Nitschke Mounds County Park. Most of the trail is projected to be 10’ wide, asphalt paved and located within highway right of ways separated from vehicle travel lanes.
proposed trail development plan. Citizens, business leaders and Gold Star Families from Mayville to Beaver Dam and surrounding areas have formed a project committee and partnered with Dodge County and the Friends of Dodge County Parks, Inc. to lay the foundation for and carry out the funding, planning, development and future maintenance of the proposed trail.
Recent local grass roots support for this project has been the catalyst to jump start this long
