Waupun City Hall
Welcome On behalf of the Waupun Area Chamber of Commerce, we invite you to swing by, stop in or stay for a while and explore everything Waupun has to offer - from our natural resources and recreational options to places of worship, history and our famous collection of art. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, we hope you find this guide book informative and beneficial. Natural Resources: The Rock River runs through Waupun and our boardwalk walking trail allows you to follow the river’s path. Looking to bike? Explore the bike trails through town or head east to the Horicon Marsh for biking, walking & auto tours. The Marsh is also great for sight seeing, spotting critters and logging a few unplugged hours in the outdoors.. Recreation: Enjoy one of our parks featuring a variety of athletic and child-friendly activities; or our Aquatic Center, Golf Course, Baseball Complex and Disc Golf Course. Want to camp under the stars? Check out the sites available at the Fond du Lac County Park. Arts: Waupun boasts one of the highest concentrations of public art per capita in the United State, thanks to a remarkable pioneer - Clarence Shaler - and the cultural inheritance he left to Waupun. Enjoy this wonderful collection of outdoor sculptures including the world-renown “End of the Trail” by James Earle Fraser and additional pieces: “Recording Angel”, “Dawn of Day”, The Citadel”, “The Pioneers”, “Doe and Fawn”, and “Who Sows Believes in God”. History: Waupun is also home to one of the first Carnegie libraries in the state and the first Wisconsin State Prison built in 1851. In addition there are several other properties around the city that are listed on the state and national registries of historic places. Local Attractions: A drive through downtown showcases historic buildings used for office and retail shops, including Gysbers Jewelry - a family-run business established in 1874. And don’t forget to visit fourth- and fifthgeneration candy makers at Guth’s Candy for gifts, popcorn, chocolates or coffee creations. We have a collection of local restaurants spanning the city and a variety of festivals throughout the year, including the Farmers Market, Truck-n-Show, Celebrate Waupun, Volksfest, Halloween on Main, Small Business Saturday, Concerts in the Park, Wine Walk and more! We’re excited you’re here! -Waupun Area Chamber of Commerce 2019 Waupun Visitors Guide

WAUPUN Naturally Inviting
Get lost and found in the natural wonder of Waupun. Nestled along the southern branch of the Rock River near the northern access points of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, Waupun’s small town charm, strong sense of community and a vast array of amenities welcome you, naturally.
NATURALLY ADVENTUROUS
Explore, relax, learn and become one with nature. Recently rated by Travel Wisconsin as one of the Wisconsin’s Top 5 Nature Preserves, you’ll not want to miss the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge located just east of Waupun. Whether birding or simply learning, nature lovers will delight in a stop at Marsh Haven Nature Center. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking, biking, and exploring Waupun’s extensive park and trail systems which are part of the 320 mile Rock River Trail Bike Trail. Waupun County Park is home to the Rock Golf Club – recently ranked as one of the top 25 courses to visit in Wisconsin by Golf Advisor – as well as Waupun Aquatic Center and Waupun Disc Golf – ranked nationally as one of the top three disc courses in the country.
NATURALLY ARTFUL
Big, bronze and bold, you’ll find the legacy of Clarence Shaler and his love of art on display in natural settings around the community. Shaler’s outdoor art collection has earned Waupun the designation of “City of Sculpture”. Plan to grab a photo at the world-renowned “End of the Trail” sculpture
by James Earle Fraser during your visit and participate in a walking or auto tour around the city to view the full gallery. There’s also opportunity for entertainment and outlets for creative expression throughout the year. Each Thursday in July, enjoy Concerts in the Park and don’t miss a stop by the Waupun Fine Arts Gallery, located on the second floor of the Waupun Public Library, for sponsored artist receptions and discussions. If theatre is your interest, Waupun Community Players produces an annual production at the Historic City Hall Auditorium that you’ll not want to miss.
NATURALLY FESTIVE
We’re a festive bunch and we invite you to join us to enjoy the numerous festivals and activities Waupun has to offer. Celebrate Waupun, a free family festival, kicks off our annual Festivals season in July. This celebration of community draws visitors both near and far to enjoy three days of fun and entertainment. The annual Waupun Truck ‘n Show, one of the largest truck shows in the country, salutes the trucking industry and features the Lights of Night Convoy. The season wraps up with Volksfest, a festival for all ages, featuring traditional German food and beverage, and live music and dancing. City of Sculpture A GALLERY OF OUTDOOR ART Those who visit the majestic End of the Trail statue often find the figure captivating, almost mirage-like in its poignant splendor. This world-famous statue is only one piece of the bronze legacy Clarence Shaler left to his beloved hometown. Born the son of Mackford Prairie farmers, Shaler was an inventive genius, always looking for better ways to do things. Perhaps that’s why he fostered such a love for sculpture, a kind of art that lends itself well to interpretation from a multitude of perspectives. Not only was Shaler instrumental in bringing two major works of American art to Waupun but he also began sculpting his own heritage in bronze at age 70, further expressing a lifelong love of art. One by one, he donated pieces to the city of Waupun and other institutions with which he felt a personal connection. Today, Waupun has one of the highest concentrations of public art per capita in the United States, thanks to one remarkable pioneer and the rich cultural inheritance he left behind.

In front of Waupun Heritage Museum on the corner of Madison and Jefferson Streets
Shaler Park on Madison Street The most recognizable of the Waupun sculpture collection, “The End of the Trail”, was first viewed by Clarence Shaler at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Clarence Shaler later commissioned James Earle Fraser to cast the sculpture in bronze. The statue was named a registered Wisconsin landmark in 1975, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Shaler’s family say he may have been depicting the cataclysmic events taking place in Nazi Germany during World WarII, sculpting the devil to represent the Nazi Party and the downcast woman, the German people.

The 12-foot figure of a pioneer woman was completed a few years before Mr. Shaler’s death. This statue is a monument to the optimism of those who plant all kinds of seeds.

Lorado Taft completed “Recording Angel” at the request of his friend, Clarence Shaler. The sculpture is placed at the head of Clarence Shaler’s wife, Blanche’s, grave. The detail on this statue is exquisite, from the filaments of the angel’s wings to her detailed toes. Recording Angel is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Shaler created this sculpture, some say his finest, in memory of his twin sister, Clara, who at age 18, died in the morning of her life. The bronze statue, a life size young girl seated on a large rock, eyes gazing heavenward, stands in the quiet of Union Cemetery in Mackford Prairie, twelve miles northwest of Waupun.
The pair of deer are Shaler’s simple tribute to the pastoral scene at Waupun’s golf course, one of his favorite places. All kinds of wildlife roamed the grounds then as they do today.

Wilcox Park, corner of Watertown and Lincoln Streets Shaler created this young family out of respect for the optimism that helped his parents and other settlers to forge ahead in the untamed wilderness of America. The Pioneers is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Dawn of Day was Shaler’s first heroic bronze statue, sculpted using several different models to achieve the maiden’s perfection. “Like this Indian maiden who is casting off the old garments... who will ever look forward to the dawn of a day of greater prosperity and happiness,” Shaler said in his dedication speech. 2019 Waupun Visitors Guide

Marsh Haven Nature Center where nature is appreciated, conserved, and celebrated! The seasons of spring, summer, and fall all offer unique opportunities to visit Marsh Haven Nature Center, located on the north end of the famous Horicon Marsh. This non-profit, volunteer-supported nature center is located just three miles east of Waupun on Highway 49. The organization was founded in 1984 and the center was built through the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers and supporters. Marsh Haven offers hiking trails, an observation tower, overnight bunkhouse, educational programs, and special events on its 46 acres. The Vine/Griffith Main Building houses museum displays depicting the history and wildlife of the Horicon Marsh area. The Respect Our Earth theater has been the location for many raptor programs, wolf presentations, and other programs aimed at nature and wildlife education. The classroom at Marsh Haven has been utilized over the years for EARTHcamp programs, trainings, scout and 4-H gatherings, and nature exhibits.
Wildlife feeding stations are located on either side of the gift shop and visitors often see a variety of birds up close. Marsh Haven has a large Purple Martin colony and will be the location for MartinFest 2018 on June 30. In addition, there is an art gallery with a diverse collection of displays and photography. The Nature Nook Children’s Area offers young visitors an area to learn and explore, and visitors can learn more about the furry, feathered, and scaly creatures that live in the Critter Corner. Visitors from all 50 states and over 90 different counties have stopped at Marsh Haven Nature Center over the years. Nature education and enjoyment is a focus at Marsh Haven Nature Center and there is a wide variety of nature education programs offered for adults and youth. Many families, day cares, public and private schools, homeschool families, 4-H clubs, scouting troops, church groups, nursing homes, veterans groups, and individuals utilize the nature center for education and a place to connect with nature.
Marsh Haven opens on April 14 for the 2018 season and closes on December 9 for the winter months. Hours are weekdays noon to 4 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a small admission fee for the museum displays. The 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit will allow people to hear firsthand from FDNY firefighters of their experiences that day. The high-tech, 53-foot trailer, which transforms into an 1,100 square foot exhibit, is a tool to further educate citizens about the events of that tragic day.
