D&B Sternweis Farms truly a family affair Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

D&B Sternweis Farms – co-host of the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Wood County, Wisconsin, to be held from July 10-12 – is every bit a family farm. Owners Daryl and Brenda Sternweis of Marshfield, Wisconsin, own a new 40-cow rotary parlor and are primed for expansion. But their children, the fifth generation on the farm, participated in chores from early on. And Daryl’s dad, Jim Sternweis, at 85, still helps with field work. “It’s a really great way to raise a family,” Brenda Sternweis said, regarding farming. She said they keep close to their family-farm roots by participating in activities like 4-H, FFA and snowmobiling. They also enjoy simple pleasures like planting a garden and hanging clothes outdoors. When the oldest daughter, Heather, married Josh Heiman in 2016 their life-long friends and neighbors became “family.” Josh Heiman’s parents, Ken and Joellen Heiman, and other Heiman family members own Weber’s Farm Store and Heiman Holsteins. The Heimans are co-hosting the show with the Sternweises. Besides being milk producers and retailers the Heimans are cheese makers and owners of Nasonville Dairy near Marshfield. Daryl Sternweis, 53, is a life-long farmer. “I grew up with it and learned to love it,” he said. “I love the field work part of it. And now with the new freestall barn and rotary I’ve become a better ‘cow man’ than I ever thought I would be.” Brenda tends youngstock, a role she said is “rewarding.” “It’s kind of like raising kids,” she said. “We name our favorites. It’s fun to follow them through the stages and into the milking herd.” Heather (Sternweis) Heiman, 26, graduated from Mid-State Technical College’s two-year farm program in Marshfield. Many of the classes are taught by Mike Sabel, vicechair of the Farm Technology Days executive committee. With her mother she oversees fresh cows and herd health and is working toward farm ownership. The oldest son, 24-year-old Justin Sternweis, has worked full-time on the farm since high school graduation, where he does the feeding with his dad. “I really enjoy the work – the physical labor,” he said. “I especially like driving tractor.” Another brother, Aaron, 22, works off the See STERNWEIS, Page 6

farm as a diesel mechanic. The other Sternweis children are Brittney, 17; Autumn, 15; Brooke, 13; and Jonathon, 11. D&B Sternweis Farms also has full-time and part-time nonfamily employees. UPDATES ADDED IN 2017 The Sternweises flipped the switch on their 40-cow rotary parlor this past August. They anticipated milking about 450 Holstein cows three times per day by the time of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. The rotary is capable of milking as many as 1,300 cows. The milking system is computerized with automatic takeoffs. Other technologies include an automatic crowd gate, handheld teat scrubber and automated footbath that fills with the touch of a button for better chemical consistency and employee safety. A touch-screen operated sort gate can divert cows to a pen off the return alley that holds 30 head. Brenda said the cows look forward to riding the rotary and enter the holding area at a brisk pace. She said they chew their cuds and are so relaxed during milking. The new parlor complex has a viewing window into

the parlor and upstairs conference room and office. Cameras in the parlor and other locations on the farm are relied upon for employee safety and monitoring livestock, particularly to detect calves born at night. Heather Heiman said a quick check on the cell phone saves a lot of labor. The family’s freestall barn features tunnel ventilation with fully automated fans and vent adjustments. Daryl said that while it’s

more expensive up front than natural ventilation, tunnel ventilation provides more cow comfort, especially in summer. Cattle are divided into four groups — fresh and special-needs cows, a high-production cow group, a segregated heifer group and the rest of the milk cows. Freestalls in the six-row barn are bedded with sawdust over mattresses. The family also uses sawdust in other barns. “I know sand is king for cow comfort,” Daryl said. “But it’s labor intensive to take out of the pit.” Manure is transferred by gravity flow from barn to manure pit, which is emptied in fall, applied via dragline and knifed in. The farm utilizes sexed semen on highend cows. And they use beef semen on cows difficult to breed. Calves are hand-fed in individual pens for one week before moving to group pens with automated feeders. Once weaned, heifers move through a series of facilities. Daryl said they’re hoping in fall to move 600-pound heifers to a custom grower and have them return bred six months. During Wisconsin Farm Technology Days visitors can board buses for tours of the Sternweis rotary parlor and adjoining tunnel-ventilated barn. The farmstead is about

one quarter-mile from the heart of Tent City. Visitors will not be able to leave the buses during the tour. MANY HANDS EASE FIELD-WORK LOAD The family owns about 1,200 acres and rents no additional land to grow corn, alfalfa hay and soybeans. Second-crop haylage harvested during Wisconsin Farm Technology Days will be delivered to Sternweis bunkers. The family shares labor for field work with Heiman Holsteins. The Sternweis family also shares labor and co-owns equipment with a relative, Jerry Sternweis, who dairy farms nearby. Every six weeks the family meets with their farm-advisory group, which includes their nutritionist, veterinarian and lender. The team plots the future of the family farm. The immediate future is ultra-hectic with Wisconsin Farm Technology Days nearing. Brenda said her family is honored to be co-hosting the 2018 show for Wood County. They’re grateful for the opportunity to promote farming, which, for the co-hosts, is a mix of traditional family-farming values and practices and new technology that will move their farm into the future.

Heiman Holsteins a ‘dairy pioneer’ family Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

H

eiman Holsteins of Marshfield, Wisconsin, is the farm side of family-run dairy businesses operated by the Heiman family. The family are co-hosts of the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Wood County to be held from July 10-12. The Heimans are teaming up with D&B Sternweis Farms, a neighboring dairy, to host the event. The Heimans also operate Weber’s Farm Store, a dairy-retail enterprise that puts the farm’s milk in the hands of consumers. Overseeing Heiman Holsteins are Josh Heiman, 33, and his cousin, Andy Heiman, 24. Josh’s parents, Ken and Joellen Heiman, and Andy’s parents, Kelvin and Marilyn Heiman, also have ownership in the farm. Joellen is a familiar face at Weber’s Farm Store, which was originally her family’s on-farm enterprise. Marilyn is the farm’s human-resource specialist. Ken and Kelvin, with a third brother, Kim, also own Nasonville Dairy, a cheese operation with locations south of Marshfield and near Curtiss, Wisconsin. Milk from Heiman Holsteins

is also processed into cheese at Nasonville Dairy as well as sold as fluid milk by Weber’s Farm Store. Josh’s older brother Ryan Heiman helps with field work and works at Nasonville Dairy and Weber’s Farm Store. Andy’s brothers Kal Heiman and Adam Heiman help with farm work and work at the Nasonville plant. There are also 11 non-family members on the farm team. Kelvin stresses the importance of family in all three enterprises and the multiple roles many have. He earned his cheesemaker license when he was 15. While he works at the farm he makes cheese at Nasonville Dairy and is a cheese-grader and field representative. “Our employees also play a big part,” Josh said. The Heimans purchased and remodeled another farm nearby in 2015, where they currently milk 475 Holsteins three times per day in a 40-cow rotary parlor. A laborsaving robot post-sprays teats. The herd produces more than 32,000 pounds of milk annually. The Heimans had milked as many as 175 cows twice per day at the Weber’s

Kelvin Heiman, right, and his wife Marilyn Heiman of Heimans Holsteins believe in educating the public about agriculture. A fiberglass cow in their parlor complex is an attention-getter. The farm will be featured in virtual tours in tent city at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days to be held from July 10-12 in Wood County, Wisconsin.

Farm Store site, but moved the herd to their new farm. Josh said the cows love riding the carousel. He said it’s more difficult to get them off than on it. Family welcomes visitors to farm

The two-story rotary complex includes offices and an upstairs conference room, which has a large window for watching cows ride the carousel. The Heimans welcome visitors of all types to their farm including many school, 4-H and FFA groups. They’re intent on educating consumers about dairy farming. Marilyn said most youngsters don’t even have grandparents farming anymore. One generation ago some non-farmers at least had exposure to grandpa and grandma’s farm. “We want the public to see how well the animals are taken care of,” she said. Josh said he feels just as strongly about the need to share the real story about farming with the public. “Farmers have to promote the dairy industry and the technology we use today — and explain why we use it,” he said.

Besides local groups, visitors from throughout the United States and other countries tour Nasonville Dairy. The Heimans take them to the farm so they have a more complete understanding of what it takes to produce quality cheese. The Heimans wanted to share their farm’s story with the public. For that reason they advocated for Wood County to host Farm Technology Days. They then volunteered to co-host the event with D&B Sternweis Farm. The farm consists of 1,350 acres of which 85 percent is owned. The dairy is several miles from the site of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days but is contributing 215 acres to the show. Tent city, parking and field demonstrations are adjacent to the D&B Sternweis Farms, which show-goers can tour on buses during the event. Heiman Holsteins will be featured in virtual-tour presentations in the University of Wisconsin-Extension tent. The Heimans share manpower with D&B Sternweis Farms to jointly harvest corn silage and haylage, and combining. Each farm also contributes equipment to joint-harvest operations. Josh said the

arrangement reduces both farms’ input costs and need for more hired labor. Heiman Holsteins recently invested in dragline manure-application equipment, which enables both farms to apply manure in a more timely manner. Co-hosts long-time friends Daryl Sternweis of D&B Sternweis Farms of Marshfield said he and his family have been long-time neighbors and good friends with the Heimans. “I’ve known them my whole life,” he said. “And I’ve shipped milk to Nasonville Dairy ever since I’ve had the farm. And my dad did too for many years.” “It’s a very friendly neighborhood,” he said. Daryl is a life-long farmer. He said there’s a general willingness with farming neighbors to lend equipment and lend a hand to one another. It was a natural progression for the families to combine their chopping and combining operations. Josh Heiman married Daryl and Brenda Sternweis’ oldest daughter, Heather. Their marriage has strengthened the bond between the Wisconsin Farm Technology Days co-hosts, Daryl said. And it was recently announced the newly married couple are expecting their first child, which would be the sixth generation for both sides of the family to live on the farm. While Josh takes Heiman Holsteins into

the future, his wife continues to be an integral contributor on her home farm. He said they talk shop and bounce ideas off one another. Heimans adopt latest technologies In their fields Heimans have been planting brown mid-rib corn-silage varieties. And they’re exploring cover cropping for heifer and dry-cow feed. They’ve grid sampled to fine tune soil fertility and used DuPont Pioneer’s Encirca service to adjust nitrogen in-season. For the dairy herd the Heimans use sexed semen on heifers and higher-producing cows. Beef semen is used on poorer producers and cows requiring a third service. The family built a calf barn for 100 head. It features two automated calf feeders and four pens. Calves are fed milk replacer. Though an underground milk-supply line from the parlor complex would enable them to conveniently use pasteurized waste milk, they simply don’t have enough treated milk to make the switch, Josh Heiman said. The herd’s somatic cell count is between 90,000 and 110,000. Sand bedding and their DeLaval TSR teat-spray robot are credited with contributing to milk quality. Heimans are looking forward to Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in large part for the opportunity it presents to tell the farming story on a much grander scale.

Craftsman recreates relics and replicas Breanna Butler

JUDY HAAS

Bill Haas creates the “World’s Smallest World’s Largest Round Barn” in honor of this year’s Wisconsin Farm Technology Days held July 10-12 in Wood County, Wisconsin.

For more than six decades Bill Haas has been creating carpentry masterpieces. A retired carpenter and business owner, Haas enjoys re-creating history through his craft. Though he spent his professional career building homes and other constructions, and even many of his “for fun” buildings are life-size — including a church, covered bridge, log cabin and a replica of the oneroom pioneer schoolhouse he attended as a child — several of his creations are toscale tabletop models. He has recreated his family’s German-style barn, his wife Judy’s Dutch-style barn and other relics of the past. “I just love doing this,” Haas said. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do but bigger buildings. Now I can’t climb, so now I’ve got to make smaller. This has always been my dream — to preserve the history of the area.” Most recently Haas has constructed a

to-scale model of the “World’s Largest Round Barn” in Marshfield, Wisconsin. The barn was created in honor of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, which is taking place this July in his native Wood County. “Bill, some years ago, had spent a Sunday afternoon at the Upham House in Marshfield,” Judy, his wife, said. “They had the original blueprints of the round barn from which he got some information and drew up some drawings of his own.” Inspired by Farm Technology Days coming this July to his home county, earlier this year Bill visited the barn to take photos and measurements inside. “If I just looked at a blueprint, I couldn’t fathom how they did this,” he said. “By going in there and measuring everything and looking at it is the way I could understand.” The original barn is 150 feet across by 70 feet high. The replica is 1/4 inch to the foot. See REPLICAS, Page 12

Round Barn recreation contest offered for youth Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

Wood County, this year’s host county for Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, is home to the World’s Largest Round Barn — located at the Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds in Marshfield, Wisconsin. The iconic structure was built in 1916 and recently celebrated its 100th birthday. As part of Farm Tech Days the Innovation Square committee is hosting a contest for youth to try their hand at building their own round barn. There will be three age brackets for participating students — 7 and younger, 8 to 12, and 13 to 18. Participants are urged to create a scaleddown replica of the infamous Round Barn, using any materials of their choice. The final project should be no longer than one square foot. To enter participants should attach a tag

on their project, including their full name, age, address and phone number. They should also list what materials were used, why they chose to use that material, disclose how long it took to complete the project and what their total cost was. Finished projects should be brought by noon on July 10 to Marshfield Clinic Health Systems Innovation Square. All participants will receive a small participation prize and one winner from each age group will be selected by the host families to win a $50 gift certificate. Winners will be announced at noon July 12. All projects should be picked up by 4 p.m. July 12. The Innovation Square committee will also display a walk-in small-scale round barn and a table-top exact replica of the round barn in the square. patience and dedication paid off with a beautiful recreation of Marshfield’s historic landmark. “It was a challenge,” Haas said. “It’s harder to make things round than it is square. I’m used to building things square.” Working from photos Judy had taken of the inside of the real round barn, Haas constructed his model barn in layers, starting with a plywood base and working his way up to the cupola. Using a “story pole,” a piece of lumber that worked as a guide, Haas knew how high each level of the barn needed to be and could track if he was meeting the right measurements. Throughout construction Haas marveled at the work of those who lived one century before him — those who designed and constructed the full-size round barn. “You gotta stand and study how they put this together because it’s unique how they did this,” he said. “It’s amazing. You gotta put it together to appreciate how they did it. This is put together exactly the way they did it. I can see how they would have done it. One piece at a time, working their way up.” Along with helping to keep the past alive and recognizing the importance of the local landmark, Haas hopes that his model helps residents relive fond memories of fairs gone by. “People have seen it who have memories of when they used to take cattle up there,” he said. “They appreciate it because they remember it from when they were kids.” He also hopes that by seeing the model barn and the complexity of it visitors to the full-size barn can experience a renewed appreciation for its construction. “It was a fun project,” he said. “It’s a miracle it turned out the way it did.” Calling it the “World’s Smallest World’s Largest Round Barn” Haas’ model will be on display at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days held July 10-12 in Wood County.

generation in her family’s farm-toretail milk business. A milking herd is no longer on-site at Weber’s Farm Store. Instead milk from Heiman Holsteins, southwest of Marshfield, is shipped to Weber’s where it’s processed on-site. Heiman Holsteins is operated by Ken and his brother, Kelvin, and their sons. The farm’s milk is also used to make cheese at Nasonville Dairy. The cheese operation, which has other farm patrons as well, is operated by Ken, Kelvin and their brother, Kim Heiman. Weber’s milk is sold on-site at the store, as well as area convenience stores, day-care centers, assisted-living facilities, coffee shops and Nasonville Dairy’s two locations, south of Marshfield and near Curtiss, Wisconsin. Ken and his brothers are long-time cheesemakers. Ken is past-president of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association and serving with Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, formerly the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. Ken, 64, was instrumental in bringing Wisconsin Farm Technology Days back to

Wood County. The county had hosted in 1960 when it was called Wisconsin Farm Progress Days. He felt Wood County would benefit from the economic impact that returns to host counties. And he said he’s excited the show will put a spotlight on central Wisconsin’s dairy-industry powerhouse, which includes neighboring Clark and Marathon counties. Wood County is also the No. 1 cranberry county in the world. Cranberries will figure prominently in the 2018 show. The cheesemaker said both host families include younger generations with eyes to the future. Each farm has a 40-cow rotary parlor. And the next generation of the extended Heiman family is also focused on new dairy products such as Weber’s kefir, a drinkable yogurt, which attendees can try at Farm Technology Days. Weber’s milk and Nasonville Dairy cheese curds will also be served in food tents. And show-goers will be able to walk to Weber’s Farm Store from tent city. Heritage and pride in being a part of agriculture are reasons Joellen gives for wanting to host Farm Technology Days.

Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

The Wood County Farm Technology Days planning committee has announced several new additions to its speaker line-up for this summer’s farm show. Greg Peterson of Farm Journal Media and Green Bay Packer linebacker Vince Biegel will each make appearances during the event, being held from July 10-12 near Marshfield, Wisconsin. Peterson, who’s known as “Machinery Pete,” will give a presentation on the sales trends in the used farm-equipment market. His program is scheduled to take place July 12 in the Rural Mutual Insurance Family Living Tent. He will also be available to meet with farmers in person at the Cloverdale Equipment booth, which is sponsoring Machinery Pete’s trip to the show. A native of Wood County, Biegel grew up on a cranberry marsh near Wisconsin Rapids, where he and his siblings are the fifth generation to have worked the farm. He credits much of his success in sports to the marsh, saying it taught him the value of hard work. Biegel was drafted by the Packers in 2017 and is also a former standout for the Wisconsin Badgers. He will spend his time at the show meeting fans and signing autographs in the Land O’Lakes Future Generations area. Attendees will also be able to see “Grillologists” Mad Dog & Merrill, who will entertain and educate backyard enthusiasts with the finer points of grilling. And Wisconsin’s 71st Alice in Dairyland, Kaitlyn Riley, will meet show-goers during all three days of the event.

Farm Tech Days in the red … cranberries that is Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

Wood County, Wisconsin, is the No. 1 cranberry-growing county in the nation. As host county of the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days to be held from July 10-12, it’s only natural cranberries have a prominent place at the show. Wisconsin accounts for more than 60 percent of U.S. cranberry production. And the United States contributes a similar amount to world output. Wood County alone accounts Matt Lippert for about 9 percent of the world’s cranberry production, said Matt Lippert, University of Wisconsin-Extension Wood County agricultural agent and Farm Technology Days executive secretary. Lippert said there are about 5,400 acres of cranberries and approximately 100 growers in Wood County. And according to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, the farmgate value of Wood County cranberries is about $40 million or 40 percent of the county’s total agricultural value.

The role cranberries may play in helping to combat antimicrobial resistance is being studied by Ocean Spray Cranberries and research collaborators.

Cranmoor, west of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, is the heart of the county’s cranberry industry. Lippert said cranberries

have been harvested there for more than 150 years. But today the ruby-red crop grows in more than half of Wood County townships. Once called “crane berry” by settlers because its blossom resembles the sandhill crane, the little red berry is Wisconsin’s official state fruit — and the state’s No. 1

fruit crop in both size and economic value. Lippert said cranberries – traditionally a bog crop — have moved upland. Growers now have the ability to lift water with pumps and return it to reservoirs. See CRANBERRIES, Page 24

Cranberries Continued from Page 22

At Farm Technology Days cranberry growers intend to lay to rest cranberry misnomers, Lippert said. Contrary to popular belief cranberries don’t grow in water. Instead the perennial low-running vines are flooded with water to aid in harvest. When a bed is flooded berries float to the surface, where they’re corralled and harvested with equipment. The crop is also flooded in the winter and encased in ice for frost protection. Miniature marsh attention-getter In the Marshfield Clinic Health Systems Innovation Square, a miniature marsh will be constructed so show-goers can compare flooded and dry beds. Lippert said the miniature marsh is modeled after Walworth County’s miniature mock-up of Lake Geneva and Kewaunee County’s miniature replica of Lake Michigan. The two counties hosted shows in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The 10-foot by 20-foot dry-growing bog will include a mulched path around the perimeter so visitors can kneel for closer inspection. An equal-sized bog will be dug into the ground and flooded. Cranberries

It’s an exciting industry.” Fourth-generation grower fired up Heidi Slinkman is a fourth-generation cranberry grower and business manager at Gaynor Cranberry Co. in Wisconsin Rapids. Her family has been growing cranberries since 1876 in Cranmoor. She’s chairing the cranberry exhibit that’s part of Innovation Square. She said she’s excited about the depth and breadth of the show’s cranberry emphasis. Slinkman said cranberryfood and -beverage manufacturers are donating samples, which can be tasted during Farm Technology Days. There’ll also be special guests to greet visitors, such as the industry’s cran- Heidi berry mascot, cranberry Slinkman royalty, and Vince Biegel, a former Wisconsin Badger now Green Bay Packer linebacker. Beigel grew up on a cranberry marsh in Wood County. S li nk m an sai d th e re ’ ll a lso b e

cranberry-related educational presentations in the UW-Extension tent. And food tents on the grounds will feature driedand-sweetened cranberries, cranberry juice and a cranberry-mustard condiment to showcase the fruit’s versatility. Conservation another component Cranberry growers rely on additional acres of support land, much of which serves as a sanctuary for wildlife including many birds. Sandhill cranes, whooping cranes and other wildlife found on cranberry marshes will be featured in the industry’s learning area, Slinkman said. There’ll also be hands-on activities for children, including one that explores the technique of sanding cranberries to promote upright growth and vine vitality. Wood County cranberry growers have a lot to talk about, Slinkman said. For instance 2017 was the 23rd consecutive year Wisconsin led the country in cranberry production. And the industry supports about 4,000 jobs in Wisconsin. There’s synergy in the cranberry focus, with visitors tasting cranberries in the food tents, seeing how they grow in the miniature marsh and delving deeper with handson education, Slinkman said.

Ben Tilberg is a member of the Wood County Farm Technology Days executive committee. He’s an agricultural scientist with Ocean Spray in Babcock, Wisconsin. Tilberg conducts cranberry research and works with Ocean Spray growercooperators in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. Tilberg said high school students from Auburndale, Marshfield and Pittsville were bused in 2017 to Evergreen Nursery in Sturgeon Bay to learn how cranberries are started. The nursery is growing potted cran- Ben Tilberg berries, which will be used to construct the miniature marsh. The vines were donated by Cutler Cranberry near City Point. Tilberg said there’ll be a small army of cranberry-grower volunteers ready to answer the public’s questions about their crop-production methods and uses of ultra-healthy berry. There’ll also be many pieces of cranberry equipment to

Miniature cranberry marsh among the attractions at Innovation Square Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

The Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Cranberry Exhibit, located within the Marshfield Clinic Health Systems Innovation Square, will showcase multi-generational heritage, family-farm pride, and the American spirit of farmers and growers alike. The interactive miniature cranberrymarsh exhibit will consist of a flooded 10-foot by 20-foot bed of floating cranberries, a 10-foot by 20-foot dry bed of cranberry vines, an information booth with product sampling, agricultural- and nature-education tent, and a cranberryequipment display area. Visitors will be able to learn how cranberries are grown, enjoy the versatility of the cranberry and walk through history by observing cranberry-farming technology advances. The flooded bed of floating cranberries will be open to the public for an interactive tour in hip boots from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wisconsin boasts a thriving agribusiness economy and Wood County is the No. 1 cranberry-producing county in the state.

There are about 5,000 acres of cranberries in Wood County. • Dry-growing bog — 10-foot by 20-foot vines were donated by Cutler Cranberry and grown in Evergreen Nursery Co. The display will have a mulched path around the perimeter of the bog so guests can kneel down for observation. Walking on vines will be discouraged. • Wet-harvest bog — 10-foot by 20-foot bog dug into the ground to model an authentic cranberry bog at time of harvest. Bog will be flooded with cranberries donated by Gardner Cran. They will be boomed into one end with Harvest Equipment set up to illustrate a harvest operation. Guests will be invited to walk into the bog with bog boots available. • Sampling and information tent — We’re inviting cranberry manufacturers to donate bite-size and single-serve samples to represent the versatility of the cranberry. Companies such as Ocean Spray, Gardner/ Badger State Fruit Processing, Mariani and Honestly Cranberry will be featured.

Farm Tech Days planning a multi-year commitment for chairman Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Committee

CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

Dennis Bangart, chairman of the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days executive committee in Wood County, Wisconsin, is busy coordinating work of about 20 planning committees for the show.

Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Dennis Bangart’s bride, Sarah (Siegel) Bangart, has been sharing her new husband with Wisconsin agriculture since they married in 2017. Dennis Bangart’s evenings are booked with planning meetings for the Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, being held from July 10-12 in Wood County. As executive-committee chair, Bangart is the point person at the top of a pyramid of volunteers working diligently to ensure the show near Marshfield is a success. Bangart is assistant vice-president and loan officer of AgCountry Farm Credit Services. From his Marshfield office he oversees Wood County and part of Marathon County. He’s worked 14 years for the financial cooperative, which covers parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. Bangart earned a dairy-science degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2004. He maintains dairy ties, being part of his family’s farm near Greenwood. The dairy, Viaduct Holsteins, consists of about 400 registered Holstein cows and 1,000 crop acres. “I have a strong passion for cattle and the registered-Holstein part of the business,” Bangart said. “It’s very hard to replace that or let go. The Central Wisconsin State Fair at Marshfield is our primary family weekend. Most people have Christmas. We have the fair.” Bangart is on the fair’s market-sale committee and is also involved with the junior dairy sale. He’s active with the Clark County Dairy Promotion Committee and FFA Alumni. And he chaired the state Holstein show in 2012 when it was held in Wood County. He’s been honored as Wood County Friend of 4-H and the 2017 Outstanding Young Farmer Member of Wood County Farm Bureau in 2017. But leading into Bangart’s role as Wisconsin Farm Technology Days executive chair is his chairmanship of the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s agribusiness committee. “Marshfield is one of the few cities that include agriculture as part of its chamber of commerce,” Bangart said of the community’s recognition of the industry’s importance.

Dennis and Sarah Bangart — in the barn at his family farm, Viaduct Holsteins, near Greenwood, Wisconsin — were married in 2017. His duties as executive-committee chairman for the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days are accelerating as the show nears. Sarah frequently accompanies her husband to meetings he attends.

From cheese plants to stainless-steel manufacturing for the dairy industry, farm-equipment manufacturing to food and veterinary labs, agriculture impacts the community’s economy. The fairgrounds in Marshfield feature the world’s largest roundbarn. Marshfield is also home to the National Farm Medicine Center, part of the Marshfield Clinic Health System. The latter will host a major farm-safety and ruralhealth emphasis at the 2018 farm show. Wood County is also a powerhouse in the world’s cranberry industry. Along with dairy, cranberries will have top billing at the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. Bangart has been serving as executivecommittee chair since 2015, when it was formally announced that the show would be held in Wood County in 2018. He said 20 committees – consisting of 300 some planning volunteers – have been established. There are 18 members on the executive committee. The vice-chairman is Mike Sabel, agricultural instructor at Mid-State Technical College in Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids. Bangart estimates he and Sabel each attend six to 12 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days committee meetings per month. Bangart said a county benefits in innumerable ways from hosting the massive farm show, as do individuals who volunteer. See CHAIRMAN, Page 36

“Relationships are built that were never expected,” he said. Police, fire departments and emergency services throughout the county have become more familiar with its agriculture. City councils in Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids – the county seat – and the Wood County Board of Supervisors are also engaging with agriculture. Bangart said rural-urban connections have been forged that he’d never have imagined, making for a stronger community going forward into the future. “Farm Forward” is the theme of the 2018 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. Bangart said it relates to Wisconsin’s “Forward” motto.
