Dear Friends, It’s only fitting that, as Madison Opera enters its second 50 years, we bring you a Cinderella story. There are a few tweaks to the animated film version you grew up with: a bracelet for a slipper, a tutor for a fairy godmother, and Hollywood for a magic kingdom. Nonetheless, the girl will still captivate her prince, he will search for and find her, and all will live happily ever after. Like the film, this is an opera to be enjoyed by children and adults. But this version is ever more beautiful. Its performance was intended to be remembered rather than re-played. Madison Opera is, in a way, its own Cinderella story. As the heroine moves from servants’ quarters to the palace of the Prince, so have we moved from a church basement to Overture Hall. But as we’ve shed simple attire for more grand, like Cinderella we have never forgotten who we are or why we are here. We exist because of a deeply felt commitment to both the art of opera and to this community in which we live. Though small in size, we are recognized for the high quality of our performances and of our management. And we’re here because of you. Your patronage and your donations have enabled us to grow and to bring you more varied and vibrant works. Thank you. With your continued support, we’ll all live happily ever after. I’ll see you at Opera in the Park in July.

Dear Friends, Welcome to 1930s Hollywood and Rossini’s Cinderella (La Cenerentola), Madison Opera’s first production of this classic fairy tale. Hollywood in the 1930s was the place of dreams, with MGM itself called “The Dream Factory,” so it’s a perfect setting for a fairy tale. Indeed, Rossini’s buffo characters like Don Magnifico were the forerunners of comic performers like Groucho Marx, so it’s only fitting that the two should meet in this production, in the canteen of Palace Pictures Studios. Rossini’s sparkling music is some of his very best, and we have an amazing cast that does justice to both his music and his humanity. I hope you will join us on July 21 in Garner Park for our eleventh annual Opera in the Park. Dane Arts recently recognized this as a “Distinctly Dane” event, and it certainly is a magical evening. I will never forget my first sight of 14,000 people conducting with their light sticks, as our amazing singers treated us all to spectacular music from opera and Broadway. I am also delighted to formally announce our 2012/13 season, the first that John DeMain and I have planned together. A Masked Ball is one of my favorite Verdi operas – great story-telling combined with thrilling music, the very essence of what makes this art form so amazing. Our first-ever Handel opera, Acis and Galatea, will be presented in the Playhouse, the perfect venue for a charming work that premiered on the terrace of the Earl of Carnavon’s home, now better known as the set for Downton Abbey. The season closes with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, our first production of this still-scandalous work in eleven years. We’ve assembled some wonderful casts, so don’t delay in getting your subscriptions – you can purchase them in the lobby today, through our brochure, or online at www.madisonopera.org. Now enjoy your visit to the fairy-tale world of 1930s Hollywood, and I’ll see you in July in Garner Park. Cheers,

Kathryn Smith General Director

When we created this production for Lyric Opera of Kansas City in 2004, we

set our version of the Cinderella story in America, specifically in the hopes and dreams that Hollywood provided during the Great Depression. Ramiro’s palace becomes “Palace Pictures Studios” and Magnifico’s world is that of Vaudeville, which the public was quickly discarding in favor of the Silver Screen. 1933 seemed to mark a turning point in Hollywood, turning away from large production numbers to strongly focused human dramas and comedies. With the wealth of images and creativity within Hollywood’s movie magic, our designers embraced the energy of renewal and discovery behind the work at Paramount, MGM, and Warner Bros. as a backdrop to Rossini’s story. In many ways, our metaphor supports Rossini’s core intent, to show that it is our own human nature that provides the magic to make our dreams come true, not fairy godmothers (or dancing mice). Just as Angelina’s hopes and dreams know no bounds, so does the timeless need for goodness and integrity to triumph over deceit and selfishness. Garnett Bruce, stage director

All talking! All singing! All dancing! The Silver Screen in the 1930s Looking for more? Here are just a few classic films from the 1930s, some of which inspired this production, some of which are simply great movies: Grand Hotel (1932), starring Greta Garbo and John Barrymore 42nd Street (1933), starring Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, and Warner Baxter It Happened One Night (1933), starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert Dinner at Eight (1933), starring Jean Harlow, John Barrymore, and Billie Burke The Thin Man (1934), starring Myrna Loy and William Powell Top Hat (1935), starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers A Night at the Opera (1935), starring The Marx Brothers Captain Blood (1935) starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland

THE STORY OF THE OPERA SYNOPSIS 1933, Hollywood. Film director Ramiro seeks a new leading lady for his films, but is frustrated when he cannot find an actress of honesty and integrity. His trusted mentor, Alidoro, a producer at Palace Pictures, suggests that he launch a search for this mythical heroine. ACT I. The Magnifico sisters— Clorinda and Tisbe— enjoy a typical day, preening and devising new duties for their much-abused stepsister, “Cinderella.” The sisters have no time for Alidoro, who comes to their door disguised as a beggar; only Cinderella shows him any kindness. At Alidoro’s signal, members of Ramiro’s staff appear to invite the ladies to Palace Pictures, where Ramiro will choose the “fairest of them all” as his new leading lady. Magnifico, once a vaudeville entertainer but now nearly penniless, sees this as a way out of his mounting debt; he pushes his favored daughters to prepare themselves. Ramiro, disguised as a driver so as to better observe the candidates, arrives to find only the maid — Cinderella. Their brief encounter sparks a scene of “love at first sight” worthy of any film. Ramiro’s driver Dandini enters to play his part, impersonating his boss. The Magnificos make quite a display, fawning on the imposter, but it is Magnifico’s abusive denial of Cinderella’s request to go along that makes the biggest impression. When she is left alone in despair, Alidoro returns to comfort her and promises to arrange for her to go to Palace Pictures. At Palace Pictures, Dandini settles into his role, leading the persistent sisters on a merry chase. A movie is being filmed at Palace Pictures, and the Magnificos enter the studio to watch. The set is very busy, with the film crew, actors, and extras working hard. Partway through the evening, a mysterious veiled woman arrives, causing much speculation. When she removes her veil, the Magnificos are stunned to see how much she resembles their maid. The mysterious woman is invited to be an extra in the film, along with the Magnifico sisters. The filming is hindered by Magnifico’s attempts to be in the movie. In true Hollywood fashion, the filming and the festivities, heavily laced with romance and intrigue, continue well into the night. INTERMISSION 11 • Madison Opera

ACT II. The Magnificos redouble their efforts to win the prize. Dandini corners Cinderella and questions her, but she admits that she has fallen for his driver and prepares to leave. Ramiro tries to convince her to stay; instead she gives him a bracelet, challenging him to find the matching one she wears, proving that his feelings are sincere. Ramiro calls off the deception and orders his staff to search for the mysterious woman and her bracelet. Dandini, disappointed at his “demotion, finds a final pleasure in revealing to the Magnificos that they have spent all evening trying to impress a chauffeur. As Cinderella sits alone, dreaming of her beautiful evening, the Magnifico family storms in, furious at having been duped. Just as they begin to take out their frustrations on Cinderella, the group from Palace Pictures comes to the door, their car having broken down nearby. Confusion sets in as Ramiro, Dandini, and Alidoro reveal their true identities, but the real fireworks begin when Ramiro recognizes Cinderella and makes her the offer of a lifetime.
