Dear Friends, Don Giovanni’s journey from homicide to hell in Mozart’s take on Don Juan ends our “Season of Temptation.” This performance will be as much fun to watch as it is to hear. The cast and chorus are in glorious voice, the maestro nonpareil, the orchestra is skilled and exuberant. The music is deservedly legendary. It is the kind of performance which we hope you’ve come to expect of us. Though Don Giovanni is our final mainstage production this season, we’ve still more to give: Opera in the Park, this year on July 13; and in the fall, the opening of the Madison Opera Center. When our staff and trustees get together with our counterparts from other opera companies, we’re always asked about Opera in the Park and the questioners don’t attempt to hide their envy. It is, as Kathryn Smith has oft said, one of our most important performances of the year. We host 14,000 Madisonians and their neighbors in a joyful celebration of and with the community which has been so generous to us. Those who enjoy opera find the venue enchanting; and those who’ve never experienced opera leave with a sense of what they’ve missed, and all have a memorable time. Of course, it’s the ambiance and the music which make it so enjoyable, but in equal part it’s the sense of community which the event brings to us. 14,000 people and yet it feels intimate. We have succeeded through the years because you attend the performances and we have succeeded because you support us. Your gifts small and large have sustained us and have made us better. Those gifts have also allowed us to realize our dream of a permanent home. We’ve now broken ground on the Madison Opera Center to which we’ll move later this year. It will house our offices and music library, provide us rehearsal, costume and meeting space and it will be easily accessible to you. Through this increased presence downtown, near Overture Center, we hope to contribute even more to the thriving Madison arts community. So, thank you for your generosity. Please don’t stop. I’ll see you at Opera in the Park, and when we open the doors of the Opera Center this fall, stop in. We’ll have a cup of coffee for you.

Dear Friends,

production to life.

When people ask me what I love about my job, I sometimes say that it’s having Mozart as a co-worker. It’s a cliché to talk about his genius, and yet it says something that his operas are still as vital and important now as when they were composed. Don Giovanni is a stunning piece, but not a simple one. We have a vibrant young cast – many in their Madison Opera debuts or role debuts – and it’s been a true pleasure to bring this

This spring has also seen the start of construction of the Madison Opera Center. As I write this, the concrete has been poured, plumbing pipes are installed, and my desk is littered with paint samples. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, walls will have gone up and the shape of the space is coming into view. We will be moving into our new home this summer, and I look forward to inviting you all into the space next year. It is a distinct pleasure to announce our 2013/14 season, which is John DeMain’s 20th anniversary with Madison Opera. We open in Overture Hall with Tosca, Puccini’s dramatically thrilling masterpiece. We return to the Capitol Theater for the first time in five years with the Madison Opera premiere of Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment, a boy-meet-girl, boy-gets-girl comedy that is pure entertainment. The season closes in Overture Hall with Dead Man Walking, a modern masterpiece by Jake Heggie that one critic says has “the most concentrated impact of any piece of American music theatre since West Side Story.” Based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean and the movie of the same name, the story of the relationship between Sister Helen and a convict on death row is incredibly powerful, and I cannot wait to share it with our community. Enjoy tonight’s show – and I’ll see you on July 13 in Garner Park for Opera in the Park! Cheers,

Kathryn Smith General Director

THE STORY OF THE OPERA Spain, 1780s

Don Giovanni

ACT I Leporello, servant to the nobleman Don Giovanni, keeps watch outside the Commendatore’s home at night. Suddenly, the Commendatore’s daughter, Donna Anna, rushes out, struggling with the masked Giovanni and followed by her father. The Commendatore challenges Giovanni to a duel and is killed. Giovanni and Leporello escape. Anna asks her fiancé, Don Ottavio, to avenge her father’s death. Giovanni and Leporello encounter one of Giovanni’s former conquests, Donna Elvira, who is devastated by his betrayal. Leporello tells her she is neither the first nor the last woman to fall victim to Giovanni and shows her his catalogue with the names of every woman Giovanni has seduced. Peasants celebrate the marriage of Masetto and Zerlina. Giovanni flirts with the bride, telling her she is destined for a better life, but Elvira tells Zerlina to flee from him. She also warns Anna, who is still unaware of the identity of her father’s murderer and has asked Giovanni for help in finding the man. Giovanni, for his part, insists that Elvira is mad, and Anna and Ottavio wonder what to believe. As Giovanni leaves, Anna suddenly recognizes his voice as that of the murderer. Devastated but determined, she once more asks Ottavio to avenge her. Giovanni, who has invited the entire wedding party to his palace, looks forward to an evening of drinking and carousing. Outside Giovanni’s home, Zerlina asks Masetto to forgive her. Giovanni enters and leads them both inside. Anna, Elvira, and

Ottavio appear masked and are invited in by Leporello. In the ballroom, Giovanni flirts with Zerlina, then drags her into the adjoining room. When she cries for help, Giovanni blames Leporello. Anna, Elvira, and Ottavio take off their masks and, along with Zerlina and Masetto, accuse Giovanni, who is momentarily surprised but manages to slip away. INTERMISSION ACT II Having exchanged clothes with Giovanni, Leporello takes Elvira on a nighttime walk, leaving his master free to serenade her maid. When Masetto arrives with friends to hunt down Giovanni, the disguised Don beats up Masetto. Zerlina finds her bruised fiancé and comforts him. Later that night, Leporello—still believed by Elvira to be Giovanni—is surprised by Anna, Ottavio, Zerlina, and Masetto, who all denounce the supposed Don. Fearing for his life, Leporello reveals his true identity before making his escape. Ottavio proclaims that he will take revenge on Giovanni and asks the others to look after Anna. Elvira thinks about Giovanni, whom she still loves in spite of everything. In a cemetery, Giovanni and Leporello meet the statue of the Commendatore, who warns Giovanni that by morning he will laugh no longer. Giovanni forces the terrified Leporello to invite the statue to dinner. The statue accepts. Once again, Ottavio asks Anna to marry him, but she replies that she will not until her father’s death has been avenged. Elvira arrives at Giovanni’s palace and makes a last desperate attempt to persuade him to change his life, but he only laughs at her. The spirit of the Commendatore enters and insists Giovanni repent. When he boldly refuses, he is consumed by flames. Elvira, Anna, Ottavio, Zerlina, Masetto, and Leporello contemplate their futures and the fate of an immoral man. - Courtesy of Opera News

G ive V oice to Y our L egacy Since 1961, Madison Opera has been sharing the excitement of opera with the citizens

of Madison, Dane County and beyond. Planned giving through your estate will help ensure this tradition of artistic excellence for future generations, both on stage and through our education and outreach programs. Your gift will touch thousands of people in meaningful ways, for years to come. Taking the first step is easy... Just include Madison Opera as part of your estate plan. Here is some simple language for an unrestricted bequest: “I hereby give $____ or a percentage of my residual estate (or specific assets) to Madison Opera Inc. to be used at the discretion of the Madison Opera management and/or Board of Trustees.” Please contact your attorney or financial advisor to discuss how you can include Madison Opera in your estate plan. Madison Opera is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our Encore Society honors individuals who have expressed their support of the Opera through a bequest or other planned gifts. If you plan to include or have already included Madison Opera in your estate plan, please let us know. When updating your plans, please be sure we are referenced as Madison Opera Inc. We are proud to recognize you as an Encore Society member!

“I believe that there are many ways of contributing to something you believe in. I have been a member of the Opera’s Encore Legacy Society since the beginning because Madison Opera is important to me. Contributing to the arts is an investment in the health and well being of the community, benefiting adults and children alike. For today and tomorrow, I am proud to include Madison Opera in my estate plans.” -Helen Wineke Madison Opera Encore Legacy Society Retired Nurse
