Hello Fellow Opera Goers, Welcome to the 2015/16 season of Madison Opera. Opera is such a special art form, and no one has described it better than Madison Opera’s Studio Artist, tenor William Ottow, who wrote on the Madison Opera Blog: “Often I think I encourage people to go to the opera because I love it, but people should go to the opera because they love it. I see people fall in love with opera all the time; it’s easy to do. But in order to fall in love with opera, you have to go and experience it for the first time. Luckily Madison is a wonderful place to experience opera, as there are many more affordable opportunities than other communities of a similar size. La Bohème was the first opera I ever saw live, and it opened the door to a new world for me. Madison Opera has a wonderful season programmed this year and people owe it to themselves to open themselves up to this world I live in and love.” If you love solo singing, opera is for you; if you love ensemble singing, opera is for you; if you love choral singing, opera is for you; if you love orchestral music, opera is for you; if you love dance, opera is for you; if you love acting, opera is for you. Opera has it all. But as you can guess, none of this comes free, and so I thank you if you have made a financial contribution this year beyond your ticket price (which covers only one-third of the cost). If you have not yet done so, I invite you to become a contributor. It’s easy. Just go to our website www.madisonopera.org and look for the “Support Us” tag. We’d love to count you among our supporters. Enjoy the opera!

Celebrating 15 Years of a Madison Summer Tradition In 2002, Madison Opera took a risk on a free concert in Garner Park. 4,000 people attended and a new tradition was born. In 2016, Madison Opera will celebrate the 15th year of this magical performance, which has quadrupled in attendance and now has the highest per-capita attendance of any such event in the country. Mark July 23 on your calendar, invite your friends, start planning your picnic, and help us make the 15th Opera in the Park a true celebration of Madison Opera and our community.

Dear Friends, Welcome to the start of our 55th season and our fifth production of La Bohème, one of the most-performed operas in the world. Bohème was the first full opera produced by Madison Opera, and members of that 1963 cast are with us in the audience this weekend. What makes Bohème so popular? Like many now-classic operas, critics hated it when it premiered, but audiences quickly fell in love with it. There are many reasons for this success, but at heart I think it is due to the combination of Puccini’s sublime music with the timeless story of 20-somethings dealing with love, friendship, and illness. Puccini was a master of theatrical composition; there is not one note of this opera that could be removed without destroying its dramatic structure. I am proud that Madison Opera performs a range of work: not only classic operas, but also more unusual ones, from both modern and older repertoire. This season is no exception: it continues in February with Mark Adamo’s Little Women, based on the beloved Louisa May Alcott novel, followed in April by Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann, a literal fantasy that is a personal favorite opera of mine. All of these performances come with an array of activities, such as Opera Novice, Opera Up Close, the Student Matinees, and previews across our community. We could not possibly produce opera without the support of all of our donors. Ticket sales alone pay for only about a third of the costs of putting opera on the stage, and our myriad engagement programs would not be possible if generous supporters did not believe in the importance of music in our world. Now sit back and enjoy the same experience that millions of people around the world have enjoyed over the past century. I look forward to seeing you all season long. Cheers,

Kathryn Smith General Director

THE STORY OF THE OPERA Paris, 1830s Act I In their Latin Quarter garret, the near-destitute artist Marcello and poet Rodolfo try to keep warm on Christmas Eve by feeding the stove with pages from Rodolfo’s latest drama. They are soon joined by their roommates—Colline, a philosopher, and Schaunard, a musician, who brings food, fuel, and funds he has collected from a student. While they celebrate their unexpected fortune, the landlord, Benoit, comes to collect the rent. After making the older man drunk, they urge him to tell of his flirtations, then throw him out in mock indignation at his infidelity to his wife. As his friends depart to celebrate at the Café Momus, Rodolfo remains behind to finish an article, promising to join them later. There is a knock at the door—the visitor is Mimì, a pretty neighbor, whose candle has gone out. As she enters the room, she suddenly feels faint. Rodolfo gives her a sip of wine, then relights her candle. Mimì realizes she lost her key when she fainted, and as the two search for it, both candles are blown out. Rodolfo finds the key and slips it into his pocket. In the moonlight, he takes Mimì’s hand and tells her about his dreams. She recounts her life alone in her room, embroidering flowers and waiting for the spring. Rodolfo’s friends are heard outside, calling him to join them. He responds that he is not alone and will be along shortly. Happy to have found each other, Mimì and Rodolfo embrace and leave together for the café. Pause Act II Amid the shouts of street hawkers near the Café Momus, Rodolfo buys Mimì a bonnet and introduces her to his friends. They all sit down and order supper. The toy vendor Parpignol passes by, besieged by children. Marcello’s former sweetheart, Musetta, enters on the arm of the wealthy but elderly Alcindoro. The ensuing tumult reaches its peak when, trying to gain Marcello’s attention, she sings a waltz about her popularity. Complaining that her foot hurts, she sends Alcindoro off to fetch a new pair of shoes. The moment he is gone, she falls into Marcello’s arms and tells the waiter to charge everything to Alcindoro. Soldiers march by the café, and as the bohemians fall in behind, Alcindoro rushes back with Musetta’s shoes. Intermission

THE STORY OF THE OPERA Act III At dawn on the snowy outskirts of Paris, a customs official admits sweepers and farm women to the city. Guests are heard drinking and singing within a tavern. Mimì arrives, searching for the place where Marcello and Musetta now live. When the painter appears, she tells him of her distress over Rodolfo’s incessant jealousy. She says she believes it is best that they part. Rodolfo, who has been asleep in the tavern, comes outside. Mimì hides nearby, although Marcello thinks she has left. Rodolfo tells his friend that he wants to separate from Mimì, blaming her flirtatiousness. Pressed for the real reason, he breaks down, saying that her coughing can only grow worse in the poverty they share. Overcome with emotion, Mimì comes forward to say goodbye to her lover. Marcello runs back into the tavern upon hearing Musetta’s laughter. While Mimì and Rodolfo recall past happiness, Marcello returns with Musetta, quarreling about her flirting with a customer. They hurl insults at each other and part, but Mimì and Rodolfo decide to remain together until spring. Intermission Act IV Months later in the garret, Rodolfo and Marcello, now separated from their girlfriends, lament their loneliness. Colline and Schaunard bring a meager meal. To lighten their spirits, the four stage a dance, which turns into a mock duel. At the height of the hilarity, Musetta bursts in with news that Mimì is outside, too weak to come upstairs. As Rodolfo runs to her aid, Musetta relates how Mimì begged to be taken to Rodolfo to die. She is made as comfortable as possible, while Musetta asks Marcello to sell her earrings for medicine and Colline goes off to pawn his overcoat. Left alone, Mimì and Rodolfo recall their meeting and their first happy days, but she is seized with violent coughing. When the others return, Musetta gives Mimì a muff to warm her hands and prays for her life. Mimì slowly drifts into unconsciousness. Schaunard realizes that she is dead, and Rodolfo is left despondent. ~Courtesy of The Metropolitan Opera

Recognized as an innovator in youth choral music education, Madison Youth Choirs (MYC) welcomes singers of all ability levels, challenging them to learn more than just notes and rhythms. Our singers explore the history, context, and heart of the music, becoming “expert noticers,” using music as a lens to discover the world. MYC serves more than 500 young people, ages 7-18, in 11 single-gender choirs. In summer 2014, 71 members of our boy choirs traveled to Scotland for their first appearance at the invitation-only Aberdeen International Youth Festival; the girl choirs will appear at the festival in summer 2016.

Play Your Part! Since 1961, Madison Opera has been working hard to bring the beauty and power of live professional opera to the stage. Won’t you help us continue the tradition as we begin our 2015/16 season? Eight Great Reasons to Give to Madison Opera 1. Support a world-class team of artists who create the performances you love, from beloved classics to provocative new works.

2. Give a deeper experience. We bring opera into our community via our education and

engagement programs that are largely free to attend, such as Opera Novice, Opera Up Close, previews in libraries and senior centers, and more. Our Student Matinees bring thousands of middle and high school students from across our state to a fully-staged opera, while our High School Apprenticeship program opens the doors to the world of opera both on the stage and off to a select group of students.

3. Opera in the Park. Our annual free concert, which celebrates its 15th year next summer, was attended by over 16,000 people last July, giving us the highest per capita attendance of any such event in the country!

4. Training for the next generation of artists. Our Studio Artists, young singers in

the transitional period between university and their professional careers, gain valuable experience and exposure, while serving as Madison Opera’s artistic ambassadors to our community.

5. We are a not-for-profit company. Without our generous donors, there would be

no Madison Opera, as ticket income pays for only one-third of the cost of bringing our operas to the stage.

6. Gifts of ALL sizes make a difference. Your donation, no matter the amount, is the driving force that helps to support our performances and community programs.

7. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. 8. Exclusive access to premium services. Each level of giving brings with it special

benefits, including complimentary reserved parking for productions, exclusive donor events, and more.

Thank you! Donations may be made at madisonopera.org, by mail, or simply call 608-238-8085.
