Welcome to Madison Opera’s 53rd season! Our 2013/14 season is a special one for several reasons, most notably that it is Maestro John DeMain’s 20th season as our Artistic Director. It is Madison’s great good fortune to have in this position a person with such talent, knowledge, and experience. Please join us in thanking Maestro DeMain for the joy he has brought our audiences for the last 19 years and for what he will continue to bring to us in the coming years. Maestro DeMain’s artistic leadership has helped Madison Opera to achieve higher levels of excellence every season. He has helped Madison Opera to bring a variety of opera styles to Madison audiences, and this season is no exception. This is also our first season in our new home, the Madison Opera Center, at 335 W. Mifflin Street in downtown Madison. We are excited at the possibilities offered by this beautiful space and especially pleased to be located only two blocks from the Overture Center, one block from the new Central Library, and close to many other cultural landmarks, allowing more and easier collaboration with other arts groups. The Madison Opera Center houses not only our offices, but two rehearsal halls, a costume shop, a music library, and more. As proud as we are of these achievements, we are humbled by the generosity of the many donors who have supported Madison Opera over the years and made this growth possible. We are grateful for the support of the donors of today who have helped to bring this remarkable season to you and who helped to make our vision of a home for Madison Opera a reality. For us to continue to bring this special art form to you, we need your help. Please tell your friends and neighbors about Madison Opera. And please consider a contribution, as each opera we produce is made possible by our donors. I hope that you enjoy Tosca and I will look forward to seeing you during the rest of the 2013/14 season.

Marie loves Tonio. Tonio loves Marie. Marie’s adoptive parents, the entire 21st Regiment, are a bit less happy about matters, and when her new-found aunt takes her away from both the regiment and Tonio, Marie despairs. Fortunately, because this is a comedy, all ends happily ever after. Sparkling melodies laced with thrilling high notes are sure to enchant, while the sweet love story makes this an opera for all ages. Dear Friends, Welcome to Tosca and the start of a season that promises so many things. It is John DeMain’s 20th anniversary season; it is the first season to be rehearsed in our new home, the Madison Opera Center; and it features a wide repertoire, including two Madison Opera premieres. Tosca is a favorite opera of many of us because it works so well on both musical and theatrical levels. There is not one excessive note in the music, not one lull in the proceedings, and all three leading performers have truly interesting characters to play. Plus everyone is dead by the final curtain. What more could you want in an Italian opera? When Tosca premiered in January 1900 – yes, this is a 20th century opera – it was greeted with horror by critics. Many said its subject was too violent and the music lacked melody; a New York critic opined that he hope the public would soon weary of this modern nonsense and return to more traditional operas. In 1912, the mayor of Boston even demanded that the staging of Act II be changed. It’s useful to remember that many works we now consider classic were once controversial. We are fortunate to have several centuries of operas to perform, and every generation produces a masterpiece or two. After a detour to comedy in February with Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment, our 13/14 season concludes with a masterpiece that premiered 100 years after Tosca – Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking. Based on the book and movie of the same name, it matches Tosca for its theatrical and musical brilliance. In the months preceding the opera, we have a series of events planned that explores the themes of social justice, religion and art, including a talk with Heggie and Sister Helen Prejean. You can read more about these events on page 17 of this playbill. We could not possibly do any of this without the support of all of our donors. Ticket sales alone pay for only about a third of the costs of putting opera on the stage, and our myriad education programs would not be possible if generous supporters did not believe that introducing school children to opera is important. I am truly grateful. Thank you for coming to the show. Enjoy these three acts of headlong drama, and I look forwarding to seeing you all season long. Cheers,

THE STORY OF THE OPERA Rome, June 17, 1800. ACT I — The Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle Cesare Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner, rushes into the church of Sant’ Andrea della Valle to hide in the Attavanti chapel. As he vanishes, a Sacristan enters, praying at the sound of the Angelus. Mario Cavaradossi enters to work on his portrait of Mary Magdalene - inspired by the Marchesa Attavanti (Angelotti’s sister), whom he has seen but does not know. Taking out a miniature of the singer Floria Tosca, he compares her raven beauty with that of the blonde Magdalene. The Sacristan grumbles disapproval and leaves. Angelotti ventures out and is recognized by his friend and fellow liberal Mario, who gives him food and hurries him back into the chapel as Tosca is heard calling outside. Forever suspicious, she jealously questions him, then prays, and reminds him of their rendezvous that evening at his villa. Suddenly recognizing the Marchesa Attavanti in the painting, she explodes with renewed suspicions, but he reassures her. When she has gone, Mario summons Angelotti from the chapel; a cannon signals that the police have discovered the escape, so the two flee to Mario’s villa. Meanwhile, the Sacristan returns with choirboys who are to sing in a Te Deum that day. Their excitement is silenced by the entrance of Baron Scarpia, chief of the secret police, in search of Angelotti. When Tosca comes back to her lover, Scarpia shows her a fan with the Attavanti crest, which he has just found. Thinking Mario faithless, Tosca tearfully vows vengeance and leaves as the church fills with worshipers. Scarpia, sending his men to follow her to Angelotti, schemes to get the diva in his power. INTERMISSION ACT II — The Palazzo Farnese Scarpia anticipates the sadistic pleasure of bending Tosca to his will. The spy Spoletta arrives, not having found Angelotti; to placate the baron he brings in Mario, who is interrogated while Tosca is heard singing a cantata at a royal gala downstairs. She enters just as her lover is being taken to an adjoining room: his arrogant silence is to be broken under torture. Unnerved by Scarpia’s questioning and the sound of Mario’s screams, she reveals Angelotti’s hiding place. Mario is carried in; realizing what has happened, he turns on Tosca, but the officer Sciarrone rushes in to announce that Napoleon has won the Battle of Marengo, a defeat for Scarpia’s side. Mario shouts his defiance of tyranny and is dragged to prison. Scarpia, resuming his supper, suggests that Tosca yield herself to him in exchange for her lover’s life. Fighting off his embraces, she protests her fate to God, having dedicated her life to art and love. Scarpia again insists, but Spoletta 9 • Madison Opera

interrupts: faced with capture, Angelotti has killed himself. Tosca, forced to give in or lose her lover, agrees to Scarpia’s proposition. The baron orders a mock execution for the prisoner, after which he is to be freed; Spoletta leaves. No sooner has Scarpia written a safe-conduct for the lovers than Tosca snatches a knife from the table and kills him. Wrenching the document from his stiffening fingers and placing candles at his head and a crucifix on his chest, she slips from the room. INTERMISSION ACT III — The Roof of the Castel Sant’Angelo The voice of a shepherd is heard as church bells toll the dawn. Mario awaits execution at the Castel Sant’Angelo; he bribes the jailer to convey a farewell note to Tosca. Writing it, overcome with memories of love, he gives way to despair. Suddenly Tosca runs in, filled with the story of her recent adventures. Mario caresses the hands that committed murder for his sake, and the two hail their future. As the firing squad appears, the diva coaches Mario on how to fake his death convincingly; the soldiers fire and depart. Tosca urges Mario to hurry, but when he fails to move, she discovers that Scarpia’s treachery has transcended the grave: the bullets were real. When Spoletta rushes in to arrest Tosca for Scarpia’s murder, she cries to Scarpia to meet her before God, then leaps to her death. - Courtesy of Opera News

In addition to a public concert series, MYC conducts an annual spring tour of schools and retirement centers, performing for more than 7,000 students and senior citizens annually. MYC also collaborates with professional arts organizations including the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Madison Ballet, and Madison Opera, while continually supporting and recognizing the work of public schools and music educators throughout the area.

As the Director of Development for Madison Opera, one of the best parts of my job has become all the wonderful conversations I get to have with our patrons. Conversations that take place during intermissions at Overture Hall, on the grass during Opera in the Park, at our special events – just about anywhere. I have had lengthy and spirited talks about Madison Opera at the Farmer’s Market, in the grocery store, at the giftwrap table at Hilldale Mall, and even during a Bob Dylan concert! I very much enjoy these spontaneous conversations because I get to know some exceptional people and I am honored that they share their thoughts, opinions, and memories with me.

Through these conversations with people like you, I have heard many stories regarding the impact that opera has had on their lives. Heartwarming stories of Saturday afternoons spent with family listening to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on the radio. Stories of growing up eagerly anticipating the Christmas telecast treat of Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. From one appreciative patron, I learned how his lifelong love for opera and his attendance at our performances brought him great comfort during a time of personal loss. I’m sure there are many, many more stories out there and I would love to hear them. If opera is important you, won’t you not only share your story, but also consider having a conversation about how you can help ensure Madison Opera’s future? Through Madison Opera’s Encore Society, your legacy gift will help us bring the beauty of opera to our community for years to come, supporting our extensive outreach and education programs for the next generation of opera-goers. If you have already provided consideration for Madison Opera in your estate plans, you are a member of the Encore Society. Won’t you please let me know, so that we can thank you and acknowledge your generosity? When you’re ready to talk, I’m ready to listen. Let’s start a new conversation. Please call me anytime, email, or just stop by the new Madison Opera Center and say “hello”.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE MADISON OPERA CENTER On September 16, 2013, the Madison Opera Center officially opened. Located at 335 W. Mifflin Street, Madison Opera’s new home encompasses our administrative offices, a rehearsal hall and smaller rehearsal studio, a costume shop, a music library, and much more. Thanks to the generosity of over 180 donors, we now have this cost-effective way to consolidate our operations, meet future artistic needs, and reaffirm our commitment to participating in the development and vitality of the thriving Madison arts community. We are off to an exciting start in getting the Center up and running, but we still need your help to finish our work. If you would like to make a donation or discuss naming opportunities, or perhaps make a multi-year pledge, please contact Beth Tolles at 608-238-8085 or tolles@madisonopera.org. We thank the following individuals who have made gifts to the Madison Opera Center Building Fund as of October 19, 2013. Thank you for helping us to literally build for our future – and that of the arts in our community.
