THE RISE AND FALL
THANKS FOR THE MEME-RIES . . .
2 Feb, The original, in an Australian schoolkid's bedroom
It may look like an uncoordinated display of flailing arms and wriggling torsos, but that has not
25 stopped the Harlem Shake becoming an internet phenomenon, watched by more than 700 million people around the world in just one month. On 2 February, the first comedy video featuring five Australian teenagers dancing wildly around a room to a track called “Harlem Shake” was
Harlem as the “Al B”
uploaded to the video-sharing site YouTube.
Since then, the Norwegian army, Manchester City FC and TV’s The Simpsons and many others have produced their own versions. The moves have even been performed as a flashmob on a plane, thanks to an enterprising Colorado ultimate Frisbee team. But the globe-spanning internet meme would never have existed were it not for a drunk who wandered on to a New York basketball court in the 1980s.
The dance became known around
Al B – full name Albert Leopold Boyce – died of heart failure in 2006 aged 43, after years of drinking heavily, but, in his prime, he was known for creating the Harlem Shake dance move. He used to perform it as part of the half-time entertainment show in basketball tournaments at Rucker Park, New York.
His 69-year-old mother, Sandra Boyce, told a New York newspaper: “When Al was dancing, we told him try to put a patent on it.” Family friend Tony Arias, said: “He would be drunk, and when you went to get him off the court he would start laughing and performing the shake.”
The dance became known around Harlem as the “Al B”, but it was not long before local teenagers picked it up and it was renamed the Harlem Shake. Since then it has inspired a club track of the same name.

THE RISE AND FALL
Al B could never have predicted the spectacular style in which the dance might come back – courtesy of the five Australian teenagers, known on YouTube as the Sunny Coast Skate. Their comedy music video, like all its 30-second imitations, begins with the shout of “Con los terroristas!” – Spanish for “With the terrorists!” – and one person, dressed in a helmet, dances alone while others in the room sit around looking oblivious. When the beat drops, another voice says “Do the Harlem shake” and everyone starts wiggling their shoulders and gyrating in wild outfits.
It has spawned more than 100,000 imitations, and the boys from south-east Queensland have been amazed by its success. “I think it’s pretty crazy. I didn’t think anyone would care at all,” Corey Walsh, a 15-year-old high school student who appears in the video, told a local paper. “Some of the groups, like the US army doing it, it’s pretty crazy the way it’s taken off.”

Harry Rodrigues, recorded the track last year and released it on 22 May with little fanfare. It was initially free to download, but he was already charging when the Australian video using it first went viral. The song shot to No1 on the US Billboard charts for several weeks. As well as track sales, Baauer will have made money from imitations, thanks to a new YouTube feature that checks content for copies and ploughs some of the advertising revenue back to the maker of the original. Content ID is said to have contributed to the success of South Korean singer Psy, who shot to fame with his catchy video of the song “Gangnam Style”, making a reported £580,000 from YouTube advertising alone.
In an interview with the American online magazine The Daily Beast, Baauer said: “It’s gotten absolutely insane. All I did was make the song, so it’s kind of a weird place for me to be at. I birthed it, it was raised by others, and now it’s like my weird, teenage kid coming back to me.”
Then, In the wee hours of Feb. 13, 2013, the hosts of the Today show stuck a knife in the back of meme. The moment they aired their take on the so-called "Harlem Shake" was the moment the viral, trapsoundtracked dance craze began it's slow death. It was one week old.
The meme is survived by Baauer's song which remains one of the most popular tracks in the world. All those versions brought the Harlem Shake to online ubiquity, but apparently the Today show's version was what finally put one foot in the meme's grave. Now, new videos are being made, begging people to quit making Harlem Shake videos.

Of course, there's always those stragglers that are late to the game. Harlem Shake late-comers ranged widely
"The Backstreet Boys are back
from primetime cartoon television shows to disability advocacy groups. These performances were cringeworthy indeed, but the meme couldn't be officially prounounced dead until a washed up boy bandsgot in in on the mix. After several attempts to revive glory days as one of the hottest boy bands, the Backstreet Boys are back... And it's not alright.
The 90s boy band recently released their video rendition of the Harlem Shake, which features a bunny costume, Nick Carter in his underwear, AJ McLean adorning a Spiderman costume, and even a tutu.
All five founding members – BSB has been a quartet since 2006 when Kevin Richardson left to start a family – added some group choreography, which Mashable suggested was to prove that the Boys still have it. But it only proved that this internet craze cannot be revived. The Harlem Shake now rests in the meme cemetery right next to Planking and organized religion. RIP

You may have recently spotted some goofy-looking headgea gracing the brows of the
35 Google founders — and a few supermodels, too. While it may seem like a cyberpunk fashion statement that just got too literal, Google’s Project Glass, a wearable camera/display combo, may well be the possible future of a certain kind of human-machine interaction.
“One thing that we’re really excited about and working hard on is
HOW GOOGLE GLASS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD
transforming the way that people interact with Google,” said Scott Huffman, Google’s vice president of engineering for Search, showing off a video demonstrating the search engine giant’s new sensation. “From the stilted one-keyword-at-a-time conversation, to more of a natural conversation … like a human assistant.”
Make no mistake, Huffman isn’t talking about a virtual assistant along the lines of Apple’s Siri, which responds to your questions. He’s talking about a way to interact with a search engine — and all its associated products — that includes it gathering so much data about your life and habits, it will start anticipating your needs. Cool? Yes. Creepy? Maybe that, too.
“If you think about a good assistant,” Huffman told me, pausing to correct himself, “a great assistant … they don’t interrupt you every few minutes.” He described his own assistant, someone who doesn’t interrupt him often, but certainly knows when she should give him a gentle reminder or a sharp kick.

pointed out, referencing how disruptive our smartphones can be. Not only are they not capable of prioritizing our notifications, but they’re mostly incapable of anticipating how the priorities themselves change depending on where we are, or what time it is.
Additionally, Google has selected an exclusive group of 8,000 people to be among the company's “Glass Explorers,” who will get to buy and try Google Glass before anyone else. But being among the elite doesn’t come cheap; these explorers still have to shell out $1,500 in order to get their hands on a pair of Google’s “smartphone for your face.”
Developers who pre-ordered the first Google Glass models, called the Explorer Edition, will be receiving their headsets within the next month. Those who pre-ordered the Explorer Edition at last year's Google I/O should be the first to receive their headsets, while those who won the "If I had Glass" competition last month are lower on the list. For everyone else, Google Glass will be available to consumers sometime this year.
38
#IFIHADGLASS Recently Google has publicly unveiled new photos and the first video from the real view of their augmented reality glasses prototype. The images show what the wearer sees while reading a newspaper, catching a football in the backyard and helping a smiling child play on the jungle gym.
Such views don't necessarily represent anything people haven't seen before with head-mounted portable cameras. But they do hint at how Google Glasses could enable many people beyond geeky life-casters to capture a diverse array of moments in their lives — the video shows the bouncy viewpoint of the Google Glasses wearer doing flips on a trampoline.
Google Glass is supposed to perform many of the same tasks as smartphones, except the spectacles respond to voice commands instead of fingers touching a display screen. The glasses are equipped with a hidden camera and tiny display screen attached to a rim above the right eye. The engineers who have been building Google Glass tout the technology as a way to keep people connected to their email, online social networks and other crucial information without having to frequently gaze down at the small screen on a smartphone. The hidden camera is designed to make it easy for people to take hands-free photos or video of whatever they are doing, whether it be bicycling, running, skiing, skydiving or just playing with friends and enjoying time with family.

47 The first thing you need to decide is what type of ticket you will purchase: a general admission or VIP ticket. VIP tickets, which are much more expensive, offer perks such as special entrances, reserved seating at the main concert stage and campsites much closer to Centeroo, the location of all stages, tents and vendors. Buy a general admission ticket as early as possible, because the longer you wait, the more expensive the ticket will become.
Know what to bring and what not to bring. The festival’s Web site lists recommended and banned items. Read these thoroughly before packing. All vehicles are searched upon entry for prohibited items such as drugs, glass bottles, pets, weapons and fireworks. Do not bring too many bottles of water. Drinking water is provided on site and you can refill your own water bottles.
Getting through security to enter the site can be a long process on day one. You may wait in your vehicle for a couple of hours before you make it to your camping site. Make sure you have plenty of gas before you approach the entrance gate.
Be prepared for all types of weather. It is often very hot during the festival, and sunscreen is essential. Thunderstorms are also frequent. Nights can be cool, so make sure you have a sweater and blankets for your tent. Sneakers are highly recommended because the site can become very muddy after rain.

#HILTON MAGIC HOW A DUNK TURNED INTO DEATH THREATS
I saw an open basket, and I attacked it.
51
@elijahjohnson15 I hope you break every bone in your body and never play basketball again.
The seconds were closing down, and Elijah Johnson didn’t care. He stuffed the ball in the basket like it was his last chance to breathe. On Monday night, Elijah Johnson delivered an apology that momentarily turned his celebratory postgame news conference into a Richard Nixon-like "mistakes were made" media event.
During the gap between the ferocious fast-break dunk that capped No. 6 Kansas' 108-96 overtime win at Iowa State and the time he entered the media room at Hilton Coliseum, wise public relations officials and coaches probably advised Johnson to right his wrong.
So that's what the senior did. Instead of commencing the Q&A with a discussion about his career-high 39-point effort, he said sorry.
"First, before I answer any questions or talk about the game, I want to apologize to the head coach at Iowa State for that last play of the game," he said. "I shouldn't have dunked that ball. Right now, I'm feeling that. I should have dribbled that ball out. I just got caught in the moment. I saw an open basket, and I attacked it. Kind of got tunnel vision. I guess it was rubbing off that whole end of the game. But I want to apologize to him."

ferent basketball seasons, was the second-
showdown with the No. 3 Missouri Tigers, the Cyclones conjured up the spirit of the Hilton crowd to produce a stunning 82-75 victory. The following day’s headline read Hilton Magic Spells ‘Upset’ One More Time. In the article, Turnbull called for more “Hilton Magic” in the Cyclones’ upcoming bout with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, which had pummeled ISU, 102-74, just three weeks earlier.
On cue, “Hilton Magic” displayed its powers, as the Cyclones defeated the Cowboys, 90-81, marking a 37-point reversal from the season’s prior meeting.
More than two decades old, the term “Hilton Magic” is still applicable today. This reality was never more apparent than ISU’s school-record 39-game homecourt winning streak that ended during the 2001-02 season. The streak, which spanned four dif-
longest in the nation at the time. And on on Feb. 25th, once again, the Magic was wreaking havoc in Ames against KU. After burying a school record seventeen three pointers, ISU held an 87-82 lead lead with 0:47 left to play.
53
Hilton Coliseum was specifically built to hold in sound with a solid concrete structure, steel doors, and a crowd that sits just a few feet from the court.
54
#HILTONMAGIC And that's when Elijah Johnson buried back to back three pointers and then drew a foul on the game's final possession, tying it up with the ensuing free throws and sending the game to overtime. The Jayhawks outscored ISU 18-6 in the extra period, ending the game on a fuck you dunk by Elijah Johnson as the clock winded down to zero. Johnson scored twenty-three points in the final eight minutes of the game (including twelve in OT) on his way to the best game of his life.
That play in the final seconds of the Jayhawks' second come-from-behind overtime win against the Cyclones this season hurt feelings. It offended people. Iowa State is getting absolutely screwed right now. Kansas is literally being handed this game. Officiating in college bball is a joke.

guard," following a loss to Oklahoma State earlier this month. Johnson expressed his emotions through that dunk and the mosh pit that ensued on the KU sideline. He'd been redeemed in a game that allowed Kansas to maintain its first-place tie in the Big 12 with Kansas State.
This season, Johnson has faced as much doubt and scrutiny as any player in the country. His naysayers suggest Kansas can make a serious run in March as long as Johnson doesn't screw things up (3.0 turnovers per game). A point guard, like any player, can handle that criticism. It's expected.
