WHO ARE THEY?
The Viking era started in 793 a.c., when they attacked the lindisfarne island in England. By about the 1100 a.c. the Viking age was over. During all those years they were fighting, conquering and trading in hole Europe, Russia and the Near East. 4
They lived in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. About the 800 a.c. they started to travel to the south of Europe searching for new lands.

THE LONG SHIPS
Vikings developed a ship capable of sailing both in the waters of the fjords where they lived and in the open sea. Its design allowed navigation in both directions without turning the ship. They were very light ships that could even be transported by land to overcome the accidents of the terrain. They were used them interchangeably for commerce and for war. 6

THE HOUSE The Viking house was an open and communal space, designed around a central home fire to cook and heat the space. The building elements were mainly wood, stone, wicker, straw and mud, which were used in order to isolate the house from the inclement weather.

RAIDERS OF THE NORTH
Vikings were fickle, made quick raids to be forcibly taken with the spoils of the areas they visited in their raids. They did not seek the open 10
confrontation and with their speed prevented an organized response of defense of the towns that they attacked.
Their favorite raids were the monasteries and churches that had no protection and which guarded valuable relics and treasures.

MARKET DAY
Trade is an integral part of their life. They facilitated many elements that were greatly appreciated in Medieval Europe. Furs, ivory, amber..., were changed by products that were scarce in the north: arms, slaves, cereals, wine, jewels... The commercial activity, farmer and livestock were very important in Viking life.

WALHALLA AWAIST ME
Vikings had a strong conviction in the supernatural feeling and their whole life was ordered according to their mythology. The Viking world (Midgard) was a small part of the universe in which everything turned to an end that would have as a prize to dwell forever in Walhalla. 14

HUNTING PARTY Hunting was a major activity in Vikings life. From deer to whale. Meat and furs were a fundamental sustenance to spend the harsh Arctic winter.

GREAT WARRIORS
Vikings were fierce warriors who lived primarily from their reputation as ruthless. Their enemies often relented before they fought for the fierce and brutal aspect of their warriors. They used the wall of shields as element of main attack, because in the short distance they asserted their strength and their dexterity with the arms.

NEW WORLD Being great sailors they were able to reach the ends of the known world with their ships. They were the first Europeans to reach the American coast, although they could not maintain a permanent colony. Iceland, Greenland, England, Ireland, France, Russia, Asia Minor ... were places until those who arrived with their ships and settled with more or less success.

HASTINGS in 1066 it is considered that the viking era ends, with the victory of the normans in the battle of hastings. his legacy still remains in the language and in many traditions of modern europe.
