Spanish drawings in the British Museum The collection of Spanish drawings in the British Museum is one of the best outside Spain and includes works of exceptional quality. It comprises around 200 works with sheets by artists from the mid-16th to the 20th century. The collection has grown in a sporadic manner. The first acquisitions in the mid-19th century reflect the growing interest in Spanish art in Britain. The exhibition opens with the oldest drawings by 16th-century Spanish artists working in Castile, including Alonso Berruguete., and concludes with the work of Francisco de Goya, who permanently changed the context of Spanish art and contributed to making the country one of the leading artistic centres in Europe

Hiperrealismo

A finales de los años 1960 surgió en Estados Unidos un grupo de artistas que pintaban con gran realismo objetos y escenas de la vida cotidiana utilizando la fotografía como base para la realización de sus obras. La exposición que presenta ahora el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza plantea, por primera vez, una antología del Hiperrealismo desde los grandes maestros norteamericanos de la primera generación, como Richard Estes, John Baeder, Robert Bechtle, Tom Blackwell, Chuck Close o Robert Cottingham, a su continuidad en Europa y al impacto en pintores de generaciones posteriores, hasta la actualidad. El Hiperrealismo no es un movimiento cerrado; hoy, más de cuarenta años después de su aparición continúan en activo muchos de los pioneros del grupo y nuevos artistas utilizan la técnica fotorrealista en sus creaciones. Herramientas y motivos han evolucionado o cambiado con el tiempo pero con su increíble definición y nitidez, las obras hiperrealistas continúan fascinando al público.

In the late 1960s a group of artists emerged in the United States who painted scenes and objects from daily life wit a high degree of realism, using photography as the basis for their works. For the first time, the exhibition now presented at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza offers a survey of Hyperrealism that starts with the great US masters of the first generation such as Richard Estes, John Baeder, Robert Bechtle, Tom Blackwell, Chuck Close and Robert Cottingham, continues in Europe with their influence on subsequent generations, and concludes in the present day. Hyperrealism is not a closed movement and today, more than forty years after it arose, many of the pioneering figures continue to be active while new artists deploy the photorealist technique in their creations.

FERIA DE SAN ISIDRO TOROS BULLFIGHTING Mayo se convierte en uno de los meses más esperados del calendario en Madrid puesto que es durante estas fechas cuando se celebran las fiestas patronales de la ciudad, en honor a su patrón, San Isidro, cuyo día se celebra el 15 de mayo. Entre los muchos eventos y actividades, destacan los eventos taurinos, la “Feria de San Isidro” que para los aficionados es el acontecimiento más esperado del año. Durante las tardes de mayo se esperan, en Las Ventas, grandes triunfos de los toreros más aclamados, que serán sacados a hombros de la plaza cruzando la puerta grande. Mayo es para Madrid el momento de encontrarse con las grandes figuras del toreo, retando a los astados procedentes de las mejores ganaderías del país. May is the busiest month here in Madrid, since the most important local fiestas of the year are celebrated around the 15th, the day of San Isidro, patron saint of the city. This “feria” is one of the most eagerly anticipated dates for aficionados and lovers of bullfighting, who look forward to enjoying some impressive performances and seeing triumphant bullfighters being carried out on the shoulders of the crowd through the main door. During May Madrid will welcome world-famous bullfighters and mounted bullfighters who will be facing bulls and young bulls from the best Spanish ranches.

feria de san isidro toros bullfighting Lo que se conoce como “el mundo del toro” comprende, además de las corridas, un conjunto de tradiciones y costumbres que pueden ser de enorme interés para el turista. En este contexto conviven además de los matadores, los ganaderos, los críticos taurinos y los aficionados. Aunque el espectador primerizo puede encontrar en la plaza un espectáculo de enorme plasticidad, para disfrutar plenamente de los toros es necesario conocer el código de la tauromaquia. Las corridas están regidas por unas reglas muy estrictas. En una tarde siempre actúan tres toreros, empezando por el que tiene más experiencia, y se lidian seis toros. La corrida comienza con el paseíllo, desfile de las cuadrillas hacia la tribuna del presidente de la plaza para pedirle la llave de los toriles. En la primera de las suertes o partes de la corrida, llamado tercio de varas, el matador recibe al toro con el capote y luego los picadores, a caballo y con la puya, frenan al toro sobre su morillo para que no embista levantando la cabeza. En la segunda de las suertes, los banderilleros clavan sobre el lomo del toro los rehiletes. En la última suerte, el tercio de la muerte, el matador pide permiso al presidente para dar muerte al animal, se quita la montera y brinda la faena. Finalmente se sirve de la muleta para lidiar al toro y matarlo con el estoque, en un tiempo mínimo de tres avisos marcados por el presidente de la plaza.

“Para disfrutar plenamente de los toros es necesario conocer el código de la tauromaquia” Durante la corrida la banda de música toca pasodobles especialmente compuestos para los espectáculos taurinos, como el famosísimo Suspiros de España o España Cañí. Una de las peculiaridades de la plaza de Toros de las Ventas de Madrid es el silencio que guarda la banda durante la tercera suerte, en honor a la antológica faena de Domingo Ortega en el año 1939, que por descuido no estuvo acompañada de música. El torero se pone el vestido de luces, llamado así debido a sus sedas de colores brillantes y a sus bordados de oro y plata. En Madrid existen varias sastrerías taurinas, como Fermín (Aduana, 27), que renovó la indumentaria de los matadores en los años sesenta con trajes que estilizaban la figura y eran mucho más cómodos y elásticos o Justo Algaba (La Paz, 4) que hoy cuenta con una tienda virtual de artículos para toreros.

Se dice que los toros son el único espectáculo democrático, pues el público es quien agitando un pañuelo blanco presiona al presidente para que premie al torero o no lo premie. Cuando le concede una oreja después de la corrida, el público ha quedado satisfecho con el espectáculo, cuando le concede dos orejas, ha quedado muy satisfecho, cuando le concede dos orejas y el rabo, la faena ha sido un éxito y cuando le saca en volandas por la puerta grande de la plaza, que el espectáculo ha hecho historia.

The “bull world” is not just about bullfights. There is a whole range of traditions and customs we would like to introduce tourists to, a world inhabited by bullfighters, stockbreeders, bullfighting critics and enthusiasts. First-time spectators are bound to enjoy their experience at a bullring simply for the impressiveness of the show. However, if you feel you would like to understand a bit more about this tradition then you need to familiarise yourself with the bullfighting code, for these fights abide by a very strict set of rules. There are three matadors each afternoon, starting with the most experienced, and each of them fights two bulls. The bullfight begins with the paseíllo, during which the bullfighters and their cuadrillas - or squads - parade towards the Chair of the bullring to request the keys to the toriles. In the first suerte or part of the bullfight, called the tercio de varas, the matador receives the bull with his capote and then the picadors on horse-back use their puya to stab the bull in the morrillo and prevent it from attacking with its horns. In the second suerte, the banderilleros stab the bull with their rehiletes. In the last part, the tercio de la muerte, the bullfighter asks the Chair for permission to kill the animal, takes off his hat and dedicates the kill. Finally, he uses the muleta to fight the bull and then kills it with the estoque, with a minimum of three warnings from the Chair of the bullring. During the bullfight, a music band plays pasodobles composed specifically for these events, such as the famous Suspiros de España or España Cañí. One of the peculiarities of bullfights in Las Ventas is the fact that the audience remains silent during the third part to pay tribute to Domingo Ortega’s memorable bullfight in 1939, when the band forgot to play.

In Madrid, there are several tailors, from Fermín, who modernised bullfighters’ costumes in the 70s, creating designs that streamlined the matadors’ figures and were much more comfortable and stretchable, to Justo Algaba, which has a virtual store selling items for bullfighters. The Toro de Lidia bull. Stockbreeders started to cross their bulls in the 18th century hoping to create a braver breed of animals, and that is how they eventually produced the toro de lidia. According to some biologists, they are direct descendants of the European uru, represented in the cave paintings in Altamira. Enthusiasts say bullfighting is the only democratic spectacle, since members of the audience wave white handkerchiefs to pressure the Chair into awarding the bullfighter for his feat. In Madrid, as in the rest of Spain, gastronomy is an art. You will notice if you visit any of the restaurants, bars, pubs and taverns to be found all over the city. There are endless delicacies to try. Madrid’s cuisine has received influences from other parts of Spain throughout its history, but it still has its own typical, traditional recipes. Be sure to try cocido (chickpea casserole), its most famous dish. If you have a sweet tooth, then order torrijas (fried bread with honey or sugar) for dessert: you are bound to go for seconds. Madrid is a hospitable, open city, and this characteristic is also reflected in the cooking. In the streets of Madrid you will find establishments specialising in regional cuisine from all over Spain. This is the case, for example, on the Paseo de la Gastronomía (Gastronomy Route). This is a large area at the Casa de Campo Exhibition Centre. The Casa de Campo is Madrid’s largest green area, with ten restaurants situated in buildings that are replicas of Spain’s traditional, emblematic regional architecture. Here you can enjoy the best Mediterranean cuisine, as well as typical dishes from Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country, surrounded by gardens, with a play area for the little ones. 32

In Madrid you’ll find dancing, singing and rhythm until the early hours. Chueca area, where all inhibitions have been cast aside to make way for fun and tolerance, and where you’ll find a whole host of wicked venues, techno discos and designer clubs. In fact this neighbourhood has always been a beacon of modernity, and was the birthplace of the famous “movida madrileña” (a countercultural movement of the 70s and 80s). And as well as being the favourite hangout of the gay and transsexual community, the streets in this area are becoming more and more popular with anyone looking for first-rate nightlife. In summer, it’s well worth visiting the outdoor terraces in the surroundings of the Plaza de Chueca square, where you’re always guaranteed to find a great atmosphere. And of course if you want to see for yourself everything that’s on offer in this most openly tolerant of cities, why not visit Madrid during Gay Pride Week (last week of June)? The event features open air concerts and shows, as well as a parade of floats and fancy dress, while the whole area is awash 44 with rainbow flags.

fiestas de san isidro San isidro fiestas FIESTAS DE SAN ISIDRO Desde el 10 y hasta el 19 de Mayo la ciudad se llena de música, teatro, danza, fiestas, etcétera en honor al patrón de la ciudad: San Isidro. El 10 de mayo, un pasacalles con gigantes y cabezudos animará la las calles del centro a partir de las 19.00. A las 20.00 el torero Alejandro Talavante dará el pregón de apertura en la Plaza de la Villa, y acto seguido, en la Plaza Mayor, la Banda Sinfónica Municipal ofrecerá a las 21.30 un concierto de música clásica. A partir de ese momento se ponen en marcha numerosas actividades en diferentes localizaciones y que abarcan todos los campos. Los devotos del Chotis y la música popular podrán concentrarse durante las noches en el parque de Las Vistillas. Otros lugares donde disfrutar de esta fiesta son la romería del patrón, el día 15 de mayo en la Pradera de San Isidro; la Feria de la Cacharrería, una tradicional muestra de cerámica artesanal en Plaza de las Comendadoras y no podemos olvidar el espectáculo de música y luz que tiene lugar a media noche entre el 14 y 15 de Mayo.

SAN ISIDRO FIESTAs From 10 to 19 May, the city will be filled with music, theatre, dance, festivities, etcetera, all in honour of San Isidro, the patron saint of Madrid. May 10th, 7pm: the parade of giants and bigheads will once again mark the beginning of the San Isidro celebrations in the city centre. This passacaglia is the prelude to the opening speech at 8pm in Plaza de la Villa, by Alejandro Talavante (bullfighter). It will be followed by a classic music concert at Plaza Mayor (9.30pm). Thereafter, a range of activities and events will be held at locations across the city to suit all tastes. Chotis (Madrid’s traditional dance) devotees, are to gather at Las Vistillas Park, where popular tunes will be playing during the night. Other highlights of these festivities include: the traditional pilgrimage, celebrated on May 15th at Pradera de San Isidro Park; Feria de la Cacharrería a pottery fair from the 11th to the 15th in Plaza de las Comendadoras, or the spectacular light and sound show at Retiro Park (midnight between May 14th and 15th). La Casa de Campo es una enorme extensión verde -1.722 hectáreas- situada a las puertas de Madrid. Felipe II adquirió hacia 1560 ó 1561 las propiedades -casa-palacio y tierras- situadas frente a la cornisa sobre el río Manzanares que pertenecían a la nobiliaria familia de los Vargas. Posteriormente las reconvirtió en una villa renacentista sin pretensiones de representatividad pero, acorde con su sensibilidad, enmarcada por bellos jardines. Descripciones documentadas y restos de construcciones permiten recrear un conjunto que identifica su carácter manierista a través de sus elementos clásicos: grutas, laberintos, burlas de agua, etc., situados en un auténtico vergel rodeado de densos arbolados que fueron plantados en aquel tiempo.

Más alejado se encuentra el Parque El Capricho (solo abierto los festivos y fines de semana), creado a finales del siglo XVIII por la condesa-duquesa de Benavente. Este parque es uno de los ejemplares más sobresalientes y singulares de jardín paisajístico español. La visita es particularmente aconsejable en primavera, cuando el paseo se realiza entre el perfume de los bosquetes de lilas y las cascadas de rosas.

In Madrid there are many natural spaces with varied landscapes from the Sierra de Madrid mountains, which is full of beautiful locations for practising snow and mountain sports, to the Aranjuez plain or the landscape of La Mancha in the area surrounding Alcalá de Henares. The people from Madrid also like to look after their many urban parks and gardens, some of them wellknown historically like the Royal Residence of Aranjuez gardens, the Retiro Park in Madrid or the Casa de Campo park. Others were created recently, like the Juan Carlos I Park or the Tierno Galván Park. They can be found in different urban areas and are very beautiful green spaces. El Retiro Park is part of the city´s historical heritage and botanical patrimony inherited from past centuries. Once a recreation area for the Royal Family, it has become a very popular park and is central to the city´s image. A play area fit for kings: the first mention ever of this park goes back to the era of the Catholic Kings (‘Reyes Católicos’, who were Spain’s first kings after the Reconquest’s unification of all Spanish Provinces). Founders of the Jerónimos Monastery (Monasterio de los Jerónimos), a part of them were used as royal lodgings, called ‘the Quarters’, which made this area into the temporary royal household. Under Felipe II it became a place for taking a break from the court life, as well as to enjoy religious retreat in, which it owes the present name to. Near the Retiro Park, the Real Jardín Botánico (Royal Botanical Garden) gives visitors the chance to enjoy the peace and quiet of being immersed in nature. While the garden has species dating back more than two centuries for visitors to enjoy, it is also the home to both researchers and botanists.

“El Retiro Park is part of the city´s historical heritage and botanical patrimony inherited from pastcenturies.” Casa de Campo park is an enormous green area covering 1,722 hectares, located just outside of Madrid. The property, located opposite a projection over the Manzanares River, had belonged to the noble Vargas family. Philip II acquired it, including a mansion and the land, in around 1560 or 1561. He later converted it into a Renaissance villa for private rather than official use, and surrounded it with beautiful gardens, a reflection of his tastes. Documented descriptions and remnants of structures have made it possible to recreate a place whose Mannerist style can be identified through its typical elements: grottoes, mazes, giochi d’acqua (concealed jets of water to spray unsuspecting visitors), etc., located in a veritable oasis surrounded by dense trees, which were planted at that time. Far from the city center, you can also visit the Parque El Capricho (only open on weekends and public holidays) It was created in the late 18th century by the Countess-Duchess of Benavente. This park is one of the most outstanding and unique examples of the landscape garden in Spain. Spring is a particularly good time to visit, when your stroll will be accompanied by the perfume from the groves of lilacs and the cascading roses.

NIÑOS KIDS M adrid ofrece una gran oferta de ocio destinada al público infantil.
