Sexual Assault Awareness Month aims to educate, eliminate violence Phoenix Center at Auraria displays T-shirts in honor of victims, survivors and loved ones in April DENVER (Mar. 31, 2010) – The tri-institutional Phoenix Center at Auraria and campus partners are a day away from launching Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The month of April will be devoted to raising student and public awareness of sexual assault by educating communities and individuals on what sexual violence is and how to prevent it. The Auraria Campus, which includes the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver and the Community College of Denver, will have opportunities for interested individuals to participate in SAAM activities. WHAT: SAAM will kick off with the Clothesline Project (CLP). CLP, a national program, is a symbolic activity created to address the issue of violence against women. Participants of CLP decorate T-shirts to depict their experience with sexual violence. These shirts are then hung on a clothesline as a testimony to the problem of sexual violence. On the Auraria Campus, T-shirt decorating took place through March and was open to all genders. Any survivor, friend and/or family of a survivor, or even those who wanted to voice their opinion about sexual violence, were encouraged to decorate a T-shirt. The time has now come to display them.
