smells like teen spirit From high school social order, to teenage angst, the world of adolescence poses as a rather daunting period, filled with the ever-perplexing questions of “who am I?” and “where do I belong?”.
!
We dedicate Issue No. 6 to this strenuous journey of selfdiscovery, the hardships of academic pressures/ expectations, and the pains of being pure at heart.
We dedicate ‘Dropout’ to the non-comformists and ‘outcasters’ of our generation, who illustrate ideals that dare to question authority.
!
We dedicate this issue to the reckless and rebellious, the exiled and excluded, the mistreated and misunderstood.
!
Here’s to our fluorescent adolescents, here’s to us.

smells like teen spirit: youth in revolt TEENS LOVE TO REBEL, BECAUSE THEY LOVE TO QUESTION AUTHORITY. AND WHO DOESN’T LIKE PISSING OFF THEIR PARENTS?

Rebellion has always been a prominent theme in history--whether hiding in the shadows of an oppressive tyranny, or being screamed at the top of neonmasked Russian women lungs. Religiously, politically, and emotionally, rebellion has always been vital for survival. Bringing about change is a natural, yet a thorough and tasking process. Not everyone wants these alterations, and they will fight the insurgents. There isn’t always a clear “winner”, and some of these brawls will end in standstills, and usually a damaged, depleted relationship between people and rulers. Sometimes rebellion is loud and colorful, and other times it is more baroque and delicate.
!
Maria Antonia Josephina Johanna, or more commonly known as Marie Antoinette, is a prime example of a woman unhappy with her position in the French monarchy who unintentionally launches legitimate mutiny (the French Revolution) against social norms that were upheld in the court of France, circa the middle/late eighteenth century. Merely a young teenager when she was engaged to the heir of the French throne, people had no idea how she would do inside the lux walls of the palace of Versailles. Right away, all odds were against her, having little to no experience in court, and living on the eve of the French Rebellion. The Dauphine of France’s life was not solely decadent and lavish as many scenes from Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film portray, but Marie spent many years inside Versailles living unhappy and unloved. Because of her sulky, callous, and indifferent attitude inside the palace and towards the general population, many historians interpret her to be one of the causes of the French Revolution, possibly
even the eventual decline and fall of the French monarchy. King Louis XVI, the husband of Antoinette, was seen as ineffective, and Marie’s extravagant affairs only made the people even more vexed. As many people say, Marie was a product of her times, and ultimately a victim to them.
!
Although Marie Antoinette was unintentionally a victim to her situation, not all women let themselves be.
!
In recent Russian history, a group of girls dubbing themselves “Pussy Riot”, which transliterates into Russian as “Пусси Райот”. Stemming from an anarchist art collective called Voina, the courageous women making up Pussy Riot find a way to protest the extremely flawed Russian government through art and voice. Jail will not terminate them, Vladimir Putin will not terminate them, and nothing will
059
MAD SOUNDS editorial
!
terminate them. The only thing that will be terminated while they are well and good is the end of oppression in Russia. Behind technicolor ski masks and attention drawing apparel, they preach about feminism, LGBT rights, and oppose the policies of Putin. They do this throughout music and protest art, an outlet that has seemed to draw many rebels. These means of expression are not only creative, but passionate, and always seem to make a statement. From the underground feminist punk scene of the nineties, to the streets of dictatorial Moscow, protest art and music has been a key form of rebellion that does not seem to be willing to leave any time soon.
“THESE MEANS OF EXPRESSION ARE NOT O N LY C R E AT I V E , B U T PASSIONATE, AND ALWAYS SEEM TO MAKE A STATEMENT. “
Rebellion is a choice, and similar to all choices humans make, they can be ethical and good, or they can be deplorable and bad. Merely choosing to skip class to smoke marijuana in the nicotine scented parking lot of your school is an act of revolt, even though it is small. In a way, anything that can arise controversy
could be considered rebellion on some kind of level, because rebellion is a loose term. Rebellion in some people’s eyes could be different than in others. For instance, living in a Republican family, and choosing to vote for a democratic representative would be seen as an act of rebellion in the eyes of the conservative, but to democratic household, this Republican raised, democratic voter would be just viewed as “making the right decision”.
!
There is no right decision in rebellion; it is not black and white--it is abstract. In the terms of history, rebellion is a brilliant Picasso. There is only something that you feel is morally correct, and another side feels is morally incorrect. Factually, rebellion is neither right nor wrong. Teens love to rebel, because they love to question authority. Who doesn’t like pissing their parents off?

school time, my time THE KINGDOM OF HIGH SCHOOL IS NOTHING MORE THAN THE TINY THINGS YOU LEAVE BEHIND…
! !
editorial by ZOE GILLIGAN photography by SHERIDAN ELYSE DYCHES

NO. 6 - DROPOUT
!
I sometimes feel uncertain as to whether the occasional thoughts of school being completely irrelevant in my future slipping into my mind are part of my ‘teenage rebellious phase’, or simply because I can’t be bothered with pre-calculus and writing speeches about abolition and suffragists from the Victorian and Edwardian eras en Français. All I’ve ever been told my whole life is that the algebra I learned in freshman year will come in handy someday, and that the white teeth teens will lose their power and have nothing after high school.
! !
Since the time of Sixteen Candles, there’s been a vast cultural and social division amongst high school students. We live by an ethic based upon nerds being ‘unwonted’ but ‘going places’, and that the rest of the student body will go on to lead ordinary lives or roll off into the deep. This false, conventional image of high school creates an unforgivable hierarchy and impossibly pointless standards.
! !
For the better part, grade school is a colossus website where every student is labeled, and we all need a search engine to find mutually categorized people for friends. Everyone is too caught up in either separating themselves from the ‘in crowd’, or trying to get in. It’s this constant battle of the factions— to be stereotypical—the goths against the cheerleaders, the skater-dudes against the preps, the drama kids against the jocks, and so on so forth. And, if you’re neither of the above, then you’re against them all.
“THIS FALSE, CONVENTIONAL IMAGE OF HIGH SCHOOL CREATES AN UNFORGIVABLE HIERARCHY AND I M P O S S I B L Y P O I N T L E S S STANDARDS.” I’ve always been an unusual girl, and in correspondence to that, I have always been soothed and reassured that the lives of my school monarchs will go downhill once they throw those tacky tassels up in the air.
063
MAD SOUNDS editorial
! Truth is, whether you eat by the dumpsters, hang in the auditorium, throw a football around on the great lawn, or eat at the prime table in the cafeteria, it’s all irrelevant.
“THE KINGDOM OF HIGH SCHOOL IS NOTHING MORE THAN THE TINY THINGS YOU LEAVE BEHIND.” Monopolizing most of your time trying to find the right crowd for yourself is completely irrelevant. Whether you’re too school for cool, or vice versa, is ext rem el y ir re le v an t. Tarrying yourself with trying to brandish a certain look and be perceived in a specific manner is totally irrelevant. Everything surrounding the cliché of high school is of little depth and absolutely irrelevant. Being who you truly are and slowly slipping into where you belong naturally is exponentially relevant.
Where and who you were seen with wearing what clothes has no affect after you stuck that diploma under your mattress. There will always be thorns in your side looking back on the more bitter than sweet moments of high school, and there will always be stitches in your side from laughter looking back on the more sweet than bitter moments of high school. These four years of our lives are nothing but a blip in the grand scheme of things, and though they leave scars, you can’t let them define who you are and will be as a human. The kingdom of high school is nothing more than the tiny things you leave behind.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PHOTOS?

I find my inspiration everywhere. By looking out the car window on roadtrips, listening to music, drawing, reading, watching movies. Inspiration comes from everything you read, see and experience and I try to soak it all in.
!! !!
MAD SOUNDS: TO START OFF, WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHER FELLOW PHOTOGRAPHERS?
!
JULIA TROTTI: I use a Canon 5D mkiii with a series of prime lenses including the Canon 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, 35mm 1.4 and 135mm 2.0. I recommend photographers to find the right gear that suits the work they want to produce, by testing things out, borrowing gear from shop or other photographer friends and just experimenting. My camera equipment works for the fashion and portraiture work that I do.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT THAT YOU HAVE DONE THUS FAR? “Salt on Your Skin” is one of my favourite shoots ever. It was an amazing day to be a part of, everything came together so effortlessly and perfectly in a way that could have never happened if it was all meticulously planned out.

ALTHOUGH THE EQUIPMENT DOESN'T MAKE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, WHICH DO YOU FIND TO BE MORE IMPORTANT, A GOOD LENS OR A GOOD CAMERA?
!
A good lens is the way to go.
DO YOU PREFER INDOOR OR OUTDOOR SHOOTS?
!
My main love will always be outdoor, natural shoots. It's how I started photography, it's what made me fall in love with it and I think it's a feeling I will never be able to let go of! In saying that, studio shoots are also lots of fun and can be a whole challenge and learning experience in themselves, but outdoor shoots are my preference!

It was a natural progression. I started shooting because I loved it and I posted everything I created online. At first clients asked to license my images for book covers, and I was taking on similar small jobs here and there. Soon after, people started contacting me to shoot for them. At first it was a shoot every so often, and now I am shooting for clients almost every day. IN YOUR OPINION, PHOTOGRAPH?

! PATRICK GRAY IS A CALIFORNIA BASED F A S H I O N PHOTOGRAPHER, WHO FINDS INSPIRATION THROUGH MUSIC, DANCE, AND HUMAN EMOTION. AROUSING CURIOSITY AND INNOVATION, PATRICK PHOTOGRAPHS THE AUTHENTICITY OF ADOLESCENT EMOTION, AND CAPTURES MOMENTS S E E M I N G L Y IMMORTALIZED IN TIME. MAD SOUNDS: TO START OFF, WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHER FELLOW PHOTOGRAPHERS? My camera is a Sony A33. Ive had it for about a year and a half now and I am in love. Its such a convenient size so its super portable and easy to carry around. The controls and settings are easy to work with so thats a plus as well. Lens wise I always use my 50mm 1.4 because its a god. It takes amazing pictures and the clarity and sharpness in the picture is always so amazing. I definitely recommend both of these because this was my first camera and knowing nothing about cameras in the first place, this one was so self explanatory and simple. Basically I'm in love.
!! !
!
emotion the model is portraying. Why does she look this way? Is she angry or happy or sad? Can I relate to it in anyway? I think we get so caught up in how good we want the photo to be or how many people we think will like the picture and don't focus enough on the meaning of the photo and how it can affect someone in some way. Basically I want curiosity. I want people to question.
! !
DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTICULAR LOCATIONS IN WHICH YOU PREFER SHOOTING? Theres a trail right by my house thats about 4 miles and it is my favorite spot. It varies from large meadows with dead grass and tall trees to sewer ditches with weeds growing everywhere. Its so abnormal and different and I am so drawn and attracted to it.
! !
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PHOTOS? Mostly music or the way I've been feeling around the time of the shoot. I'm a dancer so a lot of my time is spent dancing or watching other people dance which gives me ideas for poses or just movement/placement in a picture whether thats the way someones hand looks or the way I can capture the movement of their hair. It all depends.

!
I don't really shoot indoors too much but I love the feel of it. Indoor shooting I think gives off more of a sense of intimacy and I love it. But I think I prefer outdoors a little more because there is so much more you can do and the use of light is so much more vast. Outdoor shooting shows the depth of field and gives me a sense of gratitude and appreciation for what I am surrounded by.
! !
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM EQUIPMENT? Oh gosh to be honest I am so camera dumb so I have no clue. I mean I like my camera right now but I want to buy a new one soon, maybe try a canon body with some sort of 50mm 1.2 lens.
!
ALTHOUGH THE EQUIPMENT DOESN'T MAKE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, WHICH DO YOU FIND TO BE MORE IMPORTANT, A GOOD LENS OR A GOOD CAMERA?
WHAT PARTICULAR MODELS DO YOU ENJOY UTILIZING IN YOUR PHOTOS? FOR WHAT REASONS?
!
I love all of my models for different reasons but lately I have been so infatuated with flaws and interesting looking girls. Crooked teeth, eyes that are far apart, lots of freckles, long arms, small lips, upturned noses whatever it is; I think instead of hiding these things and being ashamed of them, we should utilize them to the best of our abilities and be proud of them.
!! !
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT THAT YOU HAVE DONE THUS FAR? Ive had many but I think my favorite shoot so far has been one that I had in August with Cammy (Grace), Willow (Greene), Sheridan (Elyse) and Izzy (Mohr). We went to this abandoned house that was right down my street and to my favorite trail I mentioned above. The house is super 70s and was filled with cobwebs and dust that looked so cool in the sunlight that managed to stream through the cracked windows. We all had so much fun and I wish I could go back in time and relive it because I miss them all so much!

WHICH STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY FAVORITE? FOR WHAT REASONS?

I used to be a conceptual photographer but in the past year Ive become more of a fashion photographer. Although lately I have slowly been combining the two together. Conceptual gives you feeling and depth to where fashion gives you specifics and visually appealing aspects and the two together make a great team.

I personally think the lens. You could have an okay camera but put a great lens on there and I think that you could make some magic with enough work.

HAVE FUN.” DESCRIBE SOME OF YOUR EDITING PROCESSES. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PROGRAMS TO UTILIZE AND HOW DO YOU EDIT YOUR PHOTOS?
!
As soon as I am done with a shoot I shut myself in my room, download everything straight to my computer and blast some music by Soley (my favorite artist of all time) or some Thomas Newman music (my favorite composer). I use Lightroom and Vsco and lately I have been desaturating my photos because I believe it brings out the true emotion in the subject and rather than focusing on all of the bright colors surrounding, you are focused more on the subject.
December of last year and it has been so incredibly humbling and fun working with them. They are such a friendly team that has always been so kind and considerate. I wish them all the best of luck and success.
! !
DO YOU HOPE TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF PHOTOGRAPHY? I most definitely want to make a career out of this. I discovered photography my freshman year and (I don't mean this as an understatement) it has taken over my life. It is such a an escape for me and gives me the freedom to express who I am and what I feel. I cannot imagine who I would be if I didn't pick up my moms camera that one day and start taking pictures of flowers.

Good lighting, good location, good purpose. Thats it. You don't need a good camera to take an amazing picture, you just need a good mindset.

FOR
Be the photographer you want to be. Do not let other people make you think otherwise. Take pictures of what you want to take pictures of. Edit how you want to edit a picture. Have fun. DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTICULAR LOCATIONS IN WHICH YOU PREFER SHOOTING? I love shooting in downtown San Francisco. The city with all it's cracks and decay, has a personality within itself that adds feelings of euphoria and adventure to the photographs.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR PHOTOS? I usually find inspiration in fashion magazines, books, songs, and just people in general.
! !
DO YOU PREFER INDOOR OR OUTDOOR SHOOTS? I definitely prefer outdoors. I think being able to roam around everywhere taking pictures is one of the best feelings in the world. I also love the unpredictability of shooting outdoors.
!
!
I use a Nikon D200 and a 50mm 1.8. I think both are excellent for beginners to use and are also fairly inexpensive. Since the D200 came out in 2005, it's a lot cheaper than a lot of new cameras, however it is a very trusty, quality camera. The 50mm 1.8 is an amazing prime lens, and great for portraits.
! !
WHAT DIFFERENT MESSAGES/FEELINGS DO YOU HOPE TO PORTRAY WITH YOUR PHOTOS? My aim is to portray youth culture, as well as an ethereal and dreamlike aura to my photos. I think that a models eyes are one of the most important parts of a photo because of this raw emotion that they convey...as they say, although cliché sounding, ”the eyes are the window to the soul"

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SHOOT THAT YOU HAVE DONE THUS FAR?
!
My favorite shoots have probably been the one at Sutro Bath houses and one at Golden Gate Park in SF. These were both shoots with a small group of my photography friends and we just walked around taking pictures, talking about life, and ending the day with sushi and boba tea. At both of these shoots, I also met some photographers from other parts of the US, which was also really amazing.

I love fashion photography, mainly because I love fashion and being able to plan what the model is wearing and configuring it with the location I have in mind. I also love simple portraits (especially candids), that truly capture the raw emotions of a person.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM EQUIPMENT?
! !!
The Nikon d810 and an 85mm 1.2 lens ALTHOUGH THE EQUIPMENT DOESN'T MAKE THE PHOTOGRAPHER, WHICH DO YOU FIND TO BE MORE IMPORTANT, A GOOD LENS OR A GOOD CAMERA?
!!
I think a good lens is definitely more important. The lens and way the photographer configures it, can help set the mood of the photo. I also think that having a lens with a low aperture is important, because the depth of field is really essential in bringing the viewers attention to the subject.
!!
WHAT PARTICULAR MODELS DO YOU ENJOY UTILIZING IN YOUR PHOTOS? FOR WHAT REASONS?
!
I love models who have some sort of distinct and unique characteristic to them. I think that when captured well, a models personality shines through the photo and really helps create the mood.

DO YOU HOPE TO MAKE A CAREER OUT OF PHOTOGRAPHY?

My dream job would be to be a fashion photographer for a magazine or a photojournalist, traveling around the world capturing people lives through my camera. Unfortunately, it’s one of the toughest industries to become successful in, so it's more of a dream, not something that I see as my main career. Although It will definitely be a lifelong hobby.

I think that a good photograph really shows emotions or even tells a story. I also think that the colors in the photograph are extremely important, as well as the photo being aesthetically pleasing.

DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST ASPIRING PHOTOGRAPHERS?
ADVICE
FOR
Take pictures all the time, and bring your camera with you everywhere. The more you shoot, the sooner you’ll discover your own “style” and from there, you can only get better.
!
!
I use Adobe Photoshop first and fix blemishes, colors, lighting, and other minor details...and then I process my photos with VSCO.
!! !
IF YOU COULD CREATE YOUR DREAM SHOOT, OF WHAT WOULD IT CONSIST? Well, my models would be Ali Michael, Matt Hitt, and Archy Marshall. We would shoot all around NYC or maybe London and just hang out and I’d take pictures of whatever the events of the day brought along. I’d also probably take lots of 35mm film photos, disposables, and polaroids.

Saintseneca is not your average soft indie/folk band. Their songs are exceedingly catchy, but not generic in the slightest. Their thought-provoking lyrics will never bore you. By metaphorically referencing certain subjects like religion in songs such as 'Beasts' and 'James' , they never fail to spark the interest of their listeners. Not only are they talented vocalists and lyricists, but they are one of the most humble bands I've met. I had the chance to meet Zac and Maryn after their show at the Rickshaw Stop in April, 2014, and I was not at all disappointed. Saintseneca is just one of those bands that no matter where you are in the world, when you listen to their music, you feel at home.

After discovering Modern Baseball a couple of months ago, I have found myself to be simply addicted to their music. Their wide variety of sounds never fail to fit any mood. Modern Baseball has the unique ability to relate to pretty much anyone. For example, their most well-recognized song, 'Your Graduation.' I hold a strong belief that everyone has a time or person in their life that they think of when they hear that song. It's quite a hard decision deciding whether Modern Baseball's genre can be labeled as alternative or punk-pop, so I decided not to question it and let it be. I highly recommend their songs 'Apartment' and 'Rock Bottom.' You'll never regret listening to this band, because their music is simply amazing.

Jake Bugg is one of my all-time favorite folk-style solo artists. His catchier songs like 'Two Fingers' never seem to find their way out of my head. Unlike your average punk band, the Garden consists of two identical twin boys, Fletcher and Wyatt Shears. These two not only have phenomenal musical abilities, but they never fail to be extremely entertaining to watch. The two often dress in outrageous costumes as fletcher is seen in the 'I'm a Woman' music video. Most would label their music style as punk rock, but the two have created their own music style called "Vada Vada." When asked to describe what the phrase means, their only explanation is that "It's just the way our music is." Any time these two come in to your area on tour, I would highly recommend going because they put on one of the most energetic and alive shows ever.

Grimes (Claire Boucher) has one of the most unique and experimental music styles i have ever heard. Her soft-electric sounds and methodically layered tracks never fail to keep you spellbound. Grimes herself has labeled her style, "ADD Music" because of her music's frequent and dramatic shifts. Although there's a lot going on in almost all of her songs, she never fails to make them exceedingly catchy, whimsical, and fun to listen to.

Swim Deep is an Indie-pop band from Birmingham. Many refer to their music style as "Dream Pop" because of their ability to make their songs make you feel nostalgic, or dreamy. Their soft production style will never fail to keep you mesmerized by the singer's phenomenal voice. Swim Deep's melodic tunes are the perfect fit for drives on summer nights or a road trip with friends. These boys have the impeccable ability to lighten any situation. I would recommend all of their music, but my personal favorites are 'Honey' and 'She Changes the Weather.'

Mac Demarco is a soft, alternative, indie-rock artist from Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. Along with The Garden, he is currently signed by Burger Records. He is well-known for his outrageous music videos such as his 'Passing out Pieces' video where Mac is scene going about town and murdering people, also bathing in a tub filled with lettuce heads. Mac's unique vocal and production style create the perfect combination of insane and genius. Not only does Mac sell his music, but he sells his character, which people are immediately drawn to.

The Violent Femmes aren't the newest of bands, the Violent Femmes' essence of teen angst will never expire. Listening to their music will give pretty much anyone a "hell yea" attitude. Cherub is an electro-pop band from Nashville that is just allout fun to listen to. Their energetic yet soft tracks will always put you in a better mood. To finish off my list of recommendations, I will conclude with my all time favorite band, Neutral Milk Hotel. I have listened to thousands and thousands of bands in my lifetime and none of them acquire their lyrical genius. The lead singer, Jeff Mangum's voice has a sincerity that emits more emotion than any other vocalist I've heard. Their most popular album, 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea' has a unique perspective. Every song metaphorically references Anne Frank. Some believe that Jeff wrote the album to be from Peter (the boy who lived in the house with Anne)'s perspective. Every song has extremely complex lyrics, but they all seem to have simple chord combinations, causing their songs to be easy to learn and very catchy. I highly recommend every single one of their songs because they are all absolutely genius.
