Integrated Management Strategies Why Choose Integrated Managment? If you are in the business of agriculture your ultimate goal is to produce a healthy, high yielding, marketable and profitable crop. In order to produce such a crop it is necessary to optimise your inputs while managing plant nutrition, pests, diseases and stress at an econmical level thus ensuring the sustainability of your business both from a financial and environemental perspective. Modern practices integrate a range of strategies to effectivly and economically manage various inputs including water, power, fertiliser and pest control.

Integrated Fertiliser Managment What is IFM?

Integrated Fertiliser Management (IFM) considers a holistic approach to plant nutrition and takes into account the synergies and benefits that exist when using fertilisers from a wide range of potential sources including: • Bulk synthetic fertilizers – base nutrition • Foliar feeding – macro- & micronutrients • Soil amendments – e.g. humates, compost, green manures etc. • Beneficial micro-organisms – e.g. N-fixing microbes, P-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizae etc. • Biostimulants – e.g. kelp, triacontanol etc

Benefits of IFM: • • • •

Increased efficiency – get more out of your fertilizer or get the same yields out of less fertilizer. Increased crop performance - yield, stress tolerance etc Improved quality of produce – better taste, shelf life, Brix, etc. Reduced impact on the environment – ground water pollution, Carbon footprint etc.

Products to try: • • • •

Madumbi Humate - Soil conditioning for improved fertiliser efficiency. Activate N - Beneficial Microbes designed to improve efficiency of N. RhizoVital - Beneficial microbe with P -solubilizing activity. V12 Range - A comprehensive range of Foliar Feeds for targeted nutrient supplementation.

Build | Supplement | Sustain

Integrated Management Strategies Integrated Pest Management What is IPM?

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices to achieve economical control of pest organisms with the least possible effect on human health, property and environment. IPM methods include: • Economic thresholds - determining the point where pest pressure becomes an economic threat requiring control. • Monitoring - by means of forecasting, trapping and in field scouting to accuratly identify pests and pest pressure. • Prevention - by means of cultural controls which can include sanitation, crop rotation, variety selection and crop health. • Control - only implemented when economical threshold is reached and preventative measures are no longer effective. Control methods should first include trapping, mating disruption and biological controls, when these methods are no longer effective low risk, targeted chemical control can be considered.

Benefits of IPM:

• Improved resistance management - extending the effictive life of pesticide products by using varied modes of action. • Better managment of MRL’s and withholding periods. • Reduced risk of chemical damage to crops i.e. phytotoxicity. • Reduced reliance on chemical controls. • Improved profitability through better management of required inputs. • Reduced negative effects on enviroment, workers and consumers.

Products to try: • • • •

AgriSil - Silica supplementation, a nutritional tool to help improve pest, disease and stress tolerance. Eco-T - Trichoderma harzianum, an excellent option for provention of root diseases. Eco-Bb - Beauveria Bassiana, an excellent preventative pest management product. Madumbi Virus Range - Highly targeted biological control products for Codliing Moth, False Codling Moth and Bollworm.

Information on caring for your Biological products Shelf Life and Storage

Live Organism Keep Cool

Care?

Madumbi’s microbial and virus products are based on live organisms and so require some extra care when handling and storing these products in order to ensure they maintain the viability and efficacy.

Shelf Life:

• In general microbial products based on bacteria and fungi have a shelf life of 6 months to 1 year, depending on the product. Be sure to check this expiry date when you recieve the product, especially if you do not intend to use it immediatly. • Virus products tend to be more resiliant and have a shelf life of up to two years, when stored correctly.

Storage: • • • •

In order to maintain the optimum shelf life of a live organism biological product it is important to take into account some storage recommendations. For optimum, long term storage and shelf life products should be at best refrigerated at 4C or if not possible stored in an airconditioned area where temperatures do not exceed 25C Products are resiliant enough to with stand short periods of higher temperatures, such as during transport however temperatures exceeding 35C should be avoided. It is important to maintain proper care up until the use of the product, this includes in field. Avoid standing the product in direct sunlight as this will expose the product to unnecessary heat and UV exposure.

Product Requireing Cold Storage Quick Reference Guide: • • • •

Activate N - Beneficial microbes designed to improve efficiency of N. RhizoVital - Beneficial microbe with P-solubilizing activity. Eco-Rhiz Soya - Rhizobium inoculant twin pack for soya BioManagement range - All products for pest and disease control currently require refrigeration.

Information on disposal of Biological products Returns Returns?

Madumbi has a no return policy on microbial and virus products. Once our products are delivered to you we entrust them into your care. As we no longer have control over the care of these products, should they be returned we would not be able to guarentee their efficacy and we cannot resell them. This is part of our quality guarentee to you, our customer.

Disposal Disposal Considerations:

Should you need to dispose of a product once it has exceeded its shelf life please take into account the following suggestions • A products shelf life is determined as the point where the remaining viable spores would drop to a level below what is listed on the label and efficacy cannot be guarenteed. This does not mean the product is useless it just means it is unlikey to perform the task it was registered for. • As a percentage of viable organisms would still remain in an expired product it is likely that it would still offer some benefit to the user. • Our products are not hazarous to the environment, unlike chemical products they can be dispased of via normal means. However as there may still be some viability we ask you to consider donating the product to local comunity projects who may be able to reap some benefit from them.

AgriSil K50 Application Instructions

A fully soluble, liquid formulation Potassium Silicate (K 33 g/kg; Si 96 g/kg) for use as a foliar or soil applied Silica supplement to improve general plant health and stress and disease tolerance. WARNINGS •

High alkalinity will irritate skin and eyes. Avoid all contact with skin and eyes and take necessary precautions when using the product. Keep out of reach of children, uninformed persons and animals. High alkalinity can cause compatibility problems with other chemicals, always conduct a jar test before mixing with chemical products or contact you distributor for queries.

• •

• • • • • •

PRECAUTIONS •

Avoid direct contact with eyes. In case of accidental contact immediately flush eyes with clean water and seek medical advice.

Avoid contact with skin, wash hands with soap after application and before consuming food, drinking or smoking. In case of accidental contact wash area thoroughly with water. Do not inhale spray mist. Do not eat, drink or smoke whilst mixing or applying. Prevent contamination of food, foodstuffs, drinking water and eating utensils. Clean applicator before and after use. Store in original container in a dry area, away from food and feed stuffs. Rinse empty container three times with a volume of water equal to a minimum of 10% of that of the container. Add the rinsing water to the contents of the spray or mixing tank. Destroy the container, and do not use empty container for any other purpose. Use before expiry date.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE COMPATIBILITY

Potassium Silicate is highly Alkali (pH>11) and as such can cause compatibility problems related to this high alkalinity. Silica salts will also be reactive with Zinc and Aluminium salts and products containing these elements should be avoided. Effects are reduced when product is diluted. Always conduct a jar test before mixing product or consult your distributor.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS • • • •

Shake container well before use. Fill spray tank with half the required water volume and start agitator mechanism. Add required quantity of product and complete filling of the spray tank. Apply as a full cover film spray or as a soil drench as applicable. Conventional application equipment should be used.

• •

Foliar applications are more effective when applied in early morning or late evening and not during the heat of the day. AgriSil K50 is a salt product and any salt may cause leaf burn if it dries too quickly on the leaf surface. Although reports of Phyto-toxicity are rare evening applications will help to reduce the possibility of leaf burn. AgriSil K50 on its own, when applied at the correct dosage will not cause burn, however if applied in the incorrect conditions it can become a contributing factor and caution must be taken. Mixed product must be applied as soon as possible. AgriSil K50 has an SG of 1.25 and is sold on weight not volume. Keep this in mind when ordering your product.

Advanced virus technology for control of African Bollworm larvae Features • Highly concentrated SC formulation of Helicoverpa armigera Nucleopolyhedrovirus (HearNPV). • Manufactured to the highest standard by world renowned virus specialists Andermatt BioControl. • Offers highly effective control, and is a sustainable population management tool. • Alternative mode of action makes Bolldex an excellent resistance management tool and an ideal product for IPM programs. • Registered for use on all crops.

Above: The first instar larvae of African Bollworm emerging from the egg. The fact that this species consumes some of the egg shell while hatching provides a prime opportunity for virus particles to be ingested early in the pest lifecycle. Correct timing of application can offer as high as 99% control with minimal crop damage.

Above: A more advanced larval stage of the African Bollworm. The ability to prevent crop damage at this stage is reduced, therefore early application is critical for optimum control and damage prevention.

Above: A later instar larvae killed by Bolldex, unfortunately application in this instance was fairly late and some crop damage occurred. Late applications target population reduction and some crop damage is likely however if targeted at the first generation future pest populations and potential for damage are reduced.

Benefits • • • • • •

Natural product with no chemical additives, suitable for organic use. Highly specific target range and will not harm beneficial insect populations e.g. Bees. Compatible with most chemical products and can be tank mixed if pH is managed. Low volume application rate only 200ml required per Ha. Excellent shelf life of up to 24 months at 4oC and indefinite when frozen. Non-toxic, no MRL requirements and no with-holding period.

Above: The target, larvae of FCM. Surrounding it is debris scattered while is eats its way into the fruit where it causes significant damage. Though this burrowing process the larvae will ingest the Cryptex virus particles that will eventually kill it.

Above: Pomegranates are seriously affected by FCM. A female moth will lay multiple eggs on a single fruit as the above picture illustrates. FCM infestations on pomegranates in certain areas are high as orchard sanitation remains a challenge. Removal of dropped fruit is one of the key management strategies for effective population management of FCM.

Above: An adult False Codling Moth, monitoring counts of adult moth populations with the aid of pheromone traps is a critical aspect to the successful control of FCM using virus products.

Benefits • • • • • • • •

Highly specific target range and will not harm beneficial insect populations. Compatible with most chemical products provided that the pH of the mixing tank is correctly managed. Low volume application rate. Does not require the use of adjuvants or feeding stimulants such as Molasses. Natural product with no chemical additives and suitable for organic use. Excellent shelf life of up to 24 months at 4oC and indefinite when frozen. Non-toxic, no MRL requirements and no with-holding period. Advanced, rain fast formulation.

Preventative Control

1g / L water (300 - 600g depending on spray volume, crop and growth stage)

Apply weekly as a full cover spray to foliage. Ensure areas where pests are habitually found are covered. i.e. underside of leaf or leaf folds.

Curative Control

1g / L water (300 - 900g depending on spray volume, crop and growth stage)

Initial application of 900g / Ha followed up at least twice at 600g / Ha at 3-5 day intervals or until pest is under adequate control. Maintain control with preventative program especially when environmental conditions are favourable to pest outbreak.

Preventative Program with AgriSil

1g / L water (min 300g / Ha Eco-Bb) Plus 1-2 L AgriSil K50 / Ha

Apply weekly, alternating applications of Eco-Bb and AgriSil. This program allows for the application of broad spectrum fungicides which can be applied in the same week as AgriSil without negatively affecting the Eco-Bb or compromising disease and pest control. AgriSil will also aid plant disease resistance.
