SURVIVAL GUIDE NEW YORK CITY POST CIVILIZATION

“There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools, singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white, Robins will wear their feathery fire, Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone. - There Will Come Soft Rains, Sara Teasdale

DILEMMA

Humans have built a system of operating and maintaining their civilizations that depends heavily on the suppression or manipulation of the natural environment for human use. Habitat destruction is common for harvesting natural resources or urbanization but damages our ecosystem by displacing or destroying the organisms that lived there before. If we are unable to prevent the collapse of the society that has for centuries maintained this system, how can the new modern New Yorker survive the new feral landscape of the city?

PROPOSAL

This book aims to prepare the jaded urbanite for living without society’s conveniences by giving them the tools and skills to live off the land, through the narrative of the ecological landscape and increasingly complex biodiversity of a city without people.

THEMES

Survivalist Theory Ecological Apocalypse Biological Decay Zero-Impact Technology Return to Nature

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

To supply the skills and tools necessary to survive after the collapse of civilization in New York City. Secondary Objectives: To educate about the ecosystem of the New York Bay and discuss ways that ecological design can be integrated into redeveloping society.
