My name is Maelle Egea and I am entering my fourth year as an architecture student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the fall of 2017. I am still in a discovery phase in my studies where I am exploring what kind of architecture I would like to focus on in my career. I am most interesed in community-based architecture. Outside of architecture, I love horses, travel and photography.

purpose
of
this
project
was
to
renovate
an
existing

proposed atrium The atrium holds its current dome form and clerestory windows that allow for natural lighting to illuminate the space. The glass and metal panels on the atrium floor are to be replaced with hardwood flooring to improve the museum’s maintenance efficiency. In reference to water being a prime mover of the valley’s landscape, a water screen is installed in the atrium, allowing for multimedia projection. Not only does this serve as a focal point upon entry, but it also provides an exceptional experience that embraces science and technology.
11
proposed suspended installation During our first client meeting, the existing floor panels were decided to already be too great of a maintenance issue to extend throughout the rest of the museum. To solve the issue, we proposed a glass feature taking the form of the Colorado river. It is suspended from the ceiling, which allows water to flow from the outdoor garden space to the atrium. This guides the eyes throughout the exhibit spaces for wayfinding, indirectly separating the permanent and traveling exhibit spaces, leading to the outdoor garden. The lights situated above the glass installation recreates a sense of being underwater, as it projects the refraction of flowing water onto the museum floor.

The total acrylic area is 45,615 ft sq. with a total water volume of 296 ft cubed. Acrylic weighs 2.879 lb/ft sq. and water weighs 62.43 lb/ft cu. Together, the suspended river component weighs 149,000 lbs. After analyzing available opportunities to connect suspension cables to the available structural beams, the required suspension cable diameter is .5”. The layers of stacked glass or acrylic is synonymous with a stratigraphic view of the Grand Canyon. The varied layers and transparency represent the many rock layers that make up the canyon walls.

cnc wall Past the permanent exhibit space, one will find an elevated CNC farming machine that is vertically situated against the wall. Through recent technology, an open sourced CNC machine was developed to automatically plant seeds controlled by computer devices and smartphones. Linked to a game-like interface, patrons will then have the full capacity of creating their own planting regimens, growing their own plants and vegetables, and monitoring them even after the conclusion of their visit. This technology extends to the outdoor garden, allowing for a different set of plants to be grown. The suspended river pours into an interactive splash pad feature.
14
cnc research FarmBot is an open-source CNC farming machine and software package designed for small-scale precision food production. Similar to 3D printers and CNC milling machines, FarmBot hardware employs linear guides in the X, Y, and Z directions. This allows for tooling such as seed injectors, watering nozzles, sensors, and weed removal tools to be precisely positioned and used on the plants and soil. Our proposal includes a take-home pot once the succulent is fully grown.

interrogating time based media second year- spring 2016 // adobe illustrator + line weight study Interrogating Time Based Media is about identifying spatial elements that are prevalent in cinematography, specifically in the Netflix series, “Chef’s Table. We were to depict such elements using line drawings. Appropriate line weights are the most fundamental aspect to any drawing. My scene was of Massimo Bottura cutting a piece of Parmesan, eating it, and then reacting to it. The first two drawings are cutting the cheese using gradual line weights and then with tonalities. The last two drawings have darker line weights at specific moments in the scene that I chose to accentuate.

INside/OUTside second year- spring 2016 // rhino + photoshop + model making The objective of this INside/Outside was to design a space that would allow for human interaction between interior and exterior spaces through their various daily activities. The main idea of this space is the continuity of the landscape and contains private, semi-private and public spaces. The basement floor is intended to be a separate entertainment

exterior spaces through their various daily activities. This required the usage of the acquired knowledge from the past two semesters including: point, line, plane, surface, volume, parts and system. The main idea of this space is the continuity of the landscape and contains private, semi-private and public spaces. The basement floor is intended to be a separate entertainment space that does not give direct access to the main house. The visitor must enter through the dramatic descending stairs into the interior courtyard and return up and out of the landscape to enter the main house, if invited. The first floor is semi-private with a kitchen, dining room and living space connecting to the top floor through a glass-incased interior staircase. The top floor is the private space containing the bedroom and office. The experience from this view is reversed from the basement floor where one can experience the landscape as though they were “above ground floor.

spatially and how light reacts within the variations. I went about exploring a weave pattern by creating variations according to the width of the bands, the compression length of the bands in the x and y-axis, the placement of the bands in the x-axis with accordance to over or under the spatial system, and skipping slits in the main bands. The control’s slits are based on Fibonacci with the widths of 5, 3, 2, 1,1, and 2.

swenson st. Las
Vegas,
third year- fall 2016 // inspiration photography + research + rhino + vray Nevada does not immediately emanate the
perception of an agricultural oasis yet, it is one of the world’s major culinary cities. Swenson and Colby is an ideal location for an aquaponic greenhouse catered to the Las Vegas strip. It is close to the strip, allowing the produce to be delivered at the freshest capacity. It is also the gateway to the city for the 42 million tourists per year. A greenhouse along that drive will get the attention of the many tourists and change their perception on the city.
28
inspiration images Arguably, the environment of a building site is just as important as the building itself. The site is located on Swenson, an incredibly vital road to the incoming tourists from around the world. The Las Vegas skies are constantly changing. In the last days of summer, 5:24 AM is still dark as night. 5:46 AM displays the earliest signs of daybreak. 5:53 AM begins to show the pink hues of a Vegas sunrise. 6:11 AM is when the sun finally fully emerges. Last, from 7 AM on, the skies display a clear blue sky until sunset.

optimal greenhouse environment research light waves Blue light encourages vegetative leaf growth. Red light combined with blue light allows plants to flower. Cool fluorescent light is used to cultivate indoor plant growth. sound waves Plant growth is accelerated by ultrasound from 20,000 CPS and more beneficial up to 50,000 CPS. Ultrasound is sound inaudible to the human ear at frequencies greater than 20,000 cycles per second (CPS) or 20kHz. These sounds can be produced by ultrasound generators. Noise pollution can benefit and harm plant life. This is not because of the actual sound waves, but from the external environmental impacts. For example with a flower called, Scarlet Gilia, pollinated by hummingbirds, are visited 5 times more likely at noisy sites. Hummingbirds like noisy sites because their predators, the Western Scrub Jay, flees from human noise. This plant then thrives more in noisy sites due to the attraction of the hummingbird. hours of light Short day plants: mimic spring and if exposed to 12+ hours of sunlight per day, will not flower ex: cauliflower, strawberries, etc. Long day plants: mimic summer and require 18 hours of sunlight per day ex: wheat, lettuce, potatoes, spinach, turnips, etc. Day neutral plants: the most flexible, around 14 hours of sunlight per day ex: rice, eggplant, roses, corn, etc. temperature Summer: Day: 75- 85 degrees Fahrenheit Night: 60- 75 degrees Fahrenheit Winter: Day: 65- 70 degrees Fahrenheit Night: 45 degrees Fahrenheit at the lowest
