OUR CUTE CHARLOTTE
from MAEM MAGAZINE 6
by MAEM
Charlotte is a small koala bear. A representative of functionally extinct species we have adopted virtually through the Friends of the Koala organisation, moved by the enormity of the disaster caused by gigantic bushfires in Australia last year.
Koalas have been under absolute protection since 1927. Yet, their population is decreasing year by year. Destructive human activities such as successive reduction of the koala’s natural habitat and the enhanced greenhouse effect around the world are said to be the main reason for that. As a result of droughts, fires and cutting down of eucalyptus trees, koalas lose their natural habitat and are forced to wander into the unknown facing many dangers on the way. A lot of them die being hit by cars or being attacked by other animals, still others die due to illnesses.
The koala population f luc tuates . According to scientific data published 8 years ago, the population was between 50,000 to 300,000 then. WWF estimates for 2019 showed the wild koala population of around 200,000. This year, the population has dropped by yet another 5,000 due to droughts and fires. If the decrease is not stopped, the last representative of the species will die in 2050.
A perfect way to help ill or homeless koala bears is a virtual adoption through which funds needed for their treatment and reintroduction are collected. We have adopted our cute Charlotte. Unfortunately, she suffers from hip dysplasia and will have to spend the rest of her life being looked after by the Friends of the Koala carers. We know that she is well and that our support goes to her as well as to the other animals under the foundation’s care.
