Norm Nixon, Athelete and Humanitarian by SARAH EMERSON edited by CARMEN CHAFFIN

B

orn to a small rural town in Georgia, Macon to be exact, Norm Nixon began his life filled with the same curiosity, leadership and tenacity he carries with him to this day. Long before he became the Two Time NBA champion receiving great accolades, notoriety and forever making him a written part of basketball history, he was a small town kid, growing up in the South, with all the Southern ways that came with it in the 1960’s. He was his mom’s sweetest, an usher at their church, played the trumpet and was class president, and of course a star athlete. Excelling in football, basketball and track, Norm was heavily recruited out of high school. Torn as to which sport to pursue, at only 6’2”, he decided to follow his dream to college and accepted his basketball scholarship. This moved him out of the South, and up North to Pennsylvania, to Duquesne University, the program best known for breaking racial boundaries and for spending more time in the AP Top 10 then any other Atlantic 10 school. In 1977, after capturing the conference title and receiving player of the year honors, Norm was drafted to the NBA. Norm graduated with a degree in Science with a focus on mathematics. His accomplishments haunt the university. He still holds the Duquesne Men’s Basketball records for: field goals made in a career, assists in a season, assists per game in a season, assists in a career and assists per game in a career, 30 years later and retired jersey #10, hanging from the gym rafters. Norm was drafted 22nd in the 1st round by the Los Angeles Lakers. His acquisition coincided with the beginning of the Jerry Buss era, as Jerry purchased the team in 1979. These were the foundation years for the Lakers Dynasty. Norm was named to the NBA Rookie team and by his third season in the league (1980) had earned his first championship ring. Along with the NBA title Norm also led the league in minutes played and steals. He received his second ring and All-Star selection in 1982 and followed that with a second All-Star appearance in 1985. A statistic which bears relevance on a person’s talent, tenacity, strength and mental fortitude is the minutes played and games played. Norm holds down both statistics. In his first nine seasons Norm played 715 of 725 games. These types of numbers mean your program relies on you, you play through injury and illness and even through adversarial situations, the coach knows this is the player who is imperative to being on the court at all times.

Tess Panzer

“I

A Rising Star by CARMEN CHAFFIN

have early memories of being eight years old and in a production of Peter Pan as a lost boy. What I remember most vividly are the moments after the big battle, where in a rather violent rendition of this childhood classic, I was lying slain at the back of the stage amongst a number of other casualties. Older cast members filed onto stage to pick up and remove their assigned child in a mournful procession, though it seemed that my ride was out back smoking a cigarette and completely oblivious to me lying on stage through the next several scenes. Dead and unmoving, refusing to break the illusion that, even at eight years old, I knew was so important. I wanted the audience to believe, and I still do. Tess began performing in the plays put on by the local community theater group where she grew up in Svendborg, Denmark, and continued to do so after arriving at the age of 10 at the Atlanta International School in Atlanta, GA. Although starting out in minor supporting roles in musicals such as Guys and Dolls and Oliver!, she soon began to take on the bigger leading roles through middle and high school. As the end of her senior year rolled around, the growing question was - do I pursue this?

MELROSE HEIGHTS Hair and beauty by CARMEN CHAFFIN

Natural Beauty California is known for its’ infinite natural beauty, including the people who live here. The Beach Boys said it best with their hit song California Girls that declared, “I wish they all could be California Girls.” Melrose Heights is happy to present one of the many beauties that live in the Melrose Heights area. Californian grown Blanca Sanchez, shared with us a glimpse of who she is and how she enjoys the Californian lifestyle. No need to dwell upon all of the stress that a top notch busy assistant manager can accumulate during the course of a busy day at the ever popular El Carmen Restaurant in Los Angeles. Blanca makes sure your experience is a great one. So how does she shake off a week’s worth of managing? She expressed her affinity for hiking in the hills of Silver Lake and spending quality time with her friends and family. Simply, going to a movie, or just spending time hanging out with her favorite peeps is enjoyment enough. Waking up and looking out a window at all of the opportunities that California has to offer, she gives thanks for what she sees’ in front of her…another day. Her genuine and candid approach to life and the appreciation for it has strengthened her to face adversities. With a degree in Psychology, Blanca expressed her desire to reach a personal goal of giving back to society, by giving her time to an organization that she feels passionate about. Blanca has a depth to her that exudes confidence and assuredness. Her enjoyments are simple. What makes Blanca a Melrose Heights Beauty? Her inner Self.

we sampled the “Rendang Chicken”. This is a dish slowly cooked

in coconut milk with spices such as ginger and chili. OMG.... Loved this one, and the Mee Goreng, an Indian panfried noodle served fresh and hot from the kitchen, was the perfect dish to bring it all together.  Michael said we must try the “Chendol” a dessert made from palm sugar, coconut, crushed ice and chendol bean. I loved this little court side restaurant with everything served on a banana leaf, giving off smells of far away places and exotic spices, but most of all I loved when Michael said “food like art is an expression of the person who makes it” When someone says something like that you know the food is going to be good!!!!
