I believe everybody deserve to be inspired by their surroundings. That’s why the desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of my soul.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
PREFACE This portfolio represents a selection of professional work realised over the past five years. The projects were chosen to highlight the diverse scale and approaches encompassed in my design education and career. During this time, I have come to realise the immense potential of architecture and the responsibility I have as a professional to make a meaningful impact on society. In this sense, I constantly seek to design innovative solutions using a combination of logical thinking and free flowing creativity. Explorations of space, architectural detailing and interior design proposals driven by a love of simplicity, nuance, craftsmanship and the integrity of beautiful materials expressed through construction will be presented. I hope you enjoy my work,

FUNDEEH - GOVERNMENT OF VENEZUELA
DESCRIPTION The Oncological and Cardiological Hospital is located in the Southwest of the city of Caracas, in the urban nucleus of Montalbรกn. The plot is placed between a vehicular ring: to the north the Juan Pablo II Avenue, to the south the Tehran Avenue, to the west the 12th Street and to the east the 11th Street.

PROJECT ARCHITECT
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
The project of the Oncology and Cardiology Hospital has been adapted to an existing structure system developed within the land. Placing the building properly on site is determined by various conditions, such as topography, orientation, access, the uses to which the surrounding buildings are destined to, the views, noise levels of vehicle traffic, vegetation, etc.
12
GENERAL PLAN The Hospitals’ location and accessibility are ideal since they are placed between two main avenues and two secondary streets. Towards Tehran Avenue, the hospitals are opening a plaza and connection with the buildings and neighbouring context.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
14
FUNCTIONAL PLAN Both buildings are structured around a central axis ‘spine’ that goes in the North-South direction. This large axis is subdivided into a central public axis and lateral axes to it of a more restricted nature. These act as dividing lines between the most external and the most internal zones. On each side of these axis are connected perpendicularly ‘functional containers’ separated by a strip of the patio.
15
Architecture & Landscape
C I R C U L AT I O N A system formed by a bidirectional orthogonal mesh has been used, allowing differentiate the 3 main types of circulations. - Public: allow the free circulation of patients, relatives, visits, personnel, etc., without restrictions. - Staff: allows authorised circulation in the internal areas of the building for patient’s treatments. - Supplies: used to guarantee supplies to the different areas of the hospital: food, clothing, medicines, etc.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
16
17
Architecture & Landscape
S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y The use of energy is reduced by controlled natural ventilation through the facade to as many areas of free circulation as possible. These are thermally efficient facades and roofs. Besides, the orientation of the buildings and shading of windows help to control the degree of direct sunlight. The planned location of windows and gaps maximise the use of natural light particularly in public spaces.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos

The Screen Panel system provides an opportunity to design a cladding system that creates a visually crisp, clean and dynamic finish to a building’s facade.

DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
DESCRIPTION The centre is located about 445 km south of the capital. The area was occupied by agricultural land which was only recently overrun by dispersed residential development. The design strikes to become the innovation training centre for the National Institute of Rural Development of Venezuela (INDER) and provide opportunity for the local to learn new agriculture skills. Five buildings are designed to promote professional training and research. By virtue its open relationship with the immediate surroundings, the project becomes porous and permeable; allowing students to find new relationships from formal to informal education, luring the community inside while providing awareness on sustainable approach and more job opportunities to locals.
20
GENERAL PLAN The masterplan is conceived to include a series of interconnected natural, educational and leisure zones to enhance and promote agriculture, training and education through a fun and relaxing landscaped atmosphere where nature is respected and plays the primary role in highlighting the overall experience.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
22
FUNCTIONAL PLAN The centre is equipped with five isolated buildings (residences, auditorium, sports court, offices, library and public restrooms) that are connected by a central square, roofed and unroofed spaces that form the great heart of the project, with urban elements such as stairs, ramps , vestibule spaces, corridors, porches and balconies between the buildings that generate particular visuals about the landscape.
23
Architecture & Landscape
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
24
C I R C U L AT I O N A central square is the dominant conceptual driver of the project, which is an inspired urban landscape gesture within a rural environment that contributes a rich sectional dynamic to the Agricultural Training Centre. The design is interspersed with green pores gardens and local vegetation that serve as companion along the open corridors.
25
Architecture & Landscape
A U D I TO R I U M One of the most successful elements of the project is the open Auditorium, which has a capacity of more than 200 people and it is quite versatile in terms of distribution. The exaggerated linear space enables all occupants to appreciate the whole development when the main folded doors are open. Besides, two slippery doors are strategically located to divide the building into three smaller conference rooms as required, without interfering from one to another.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
The designed masterplan not just ensure an optimum internal articulation, but also a studied integration to the existing surrounding, with the aim of creating an adequate equilibrium with the different elements of the complex.
26
RESIDENCES The plan was to provide best Training Facilities to the farmers. So, a modern Residential building was proposed within the masterplan. This facility was not yet available in the region. One of the most relevant features of this new development is that it is evidenced and understood as an urban element that creates occasional steps to a different level of public space and as a stratum where it can be developed further social and educational activities.

DESCRIPTION The new integral security complex is located in the Major of Chacao in Caracas. The project, considered as a key building at a territorial political level, involves the new headquarters of the IATTC (Autonomous Institute of Traffic, Transportation and Circulation of the Mayor’s Office of Chacao), the new headquarters of TRANSCHACAO and, lastly, the new building for the Municipal Firemen. The building is separated from the street by a wide public space and square that give a chance to better appreciate all the architecture, being accessible and friendly. A compact, horizontal, abstract and introverted volume is proposed due to the requirements of high-security, use and flexibility of the program.
28
GENERAL PLAN The position of the building on the site pretends to optimise the chances that the form offers to create the necessary external parking area and differentiate police vehicles access to pedestrian public access. Such functional separation of circulation is essential for the suitable functioning of the whole.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
30
FUNCTIONAL PLAN The program –including parking, locker rooms, guardroom, storage and a shooting gallery in the underground floors- consists mainly in offices as well as a customer service area located in the ground floor. In order to make easier the internal organisation and the possible exchange of functions over time, a modular building, with lightweight and removable interior partition walls made of wood and glass, is constructed.
31
Architecture & Landscape
C I R C U L AT I O N The public entrance is defined by the main square in front, forming a large access porch. The staff entrance is placed at the opposite end of the main facade. A circulation and service block are integrated into a vertical strip of the plan and distinguish the needs of internal circulation between policemen, persons under arrest and public. It is clearly disposed at the southern side, allowing the access on each floor trough connection bridges.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
32
33
Architecture & Landscape
M AT E R I A L I T Y The external envelope appears as a double skin. The circulation box acts as an outer filter made of perforated screen panels that protect from sunlight. The concrete facade of the main building provides effective protection against sunshine and overheating. It also gives the privacy that a Security Centre requires. Once inside, a system of double height spaces and patios organise the private zones and flood the interior with light using glass panels.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
34
A longitudinal spine-like scheme orders the program in plan and establishes a clear transition between the programme and the circulation.

PROJECT ARCHITECT
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
DESCRIPTION The expansion project for a village in Terrazas de Tamanaco, Caracas, implanted on a hill that enjoys panoramic views to the west of the city, was designed in the 60s by the architect Jimmy Alcock and built in 1965. The commission arose from an extension project previously developed by Alcock, consisting of three intervention areas: pedestrian and vehicular access with parking, the main facade and landscaping in the garden that will be somehow incorporated to the living and dining spaces of the house.
36
GENERAL PLAN The present project started from the ideas put forward by the original architect, having as a premise the harmonic adaptation to the preexisting conditions of the house, without incorporating in any case forms or finishes differently from the existing ones.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
38
PERIMETER FENCE One of the owner’s requests was to design a perimeter fence in order to define the boundaries of the right side and the back of the house and give private enclosure. Thus, we proposed a modern and minimalistic design of repeated steel strips that create a pattern along the perimeter of the house. This was designed to be visually secure from outside, so the ground plain architecture could then be open and transparent without the owner’s privacy being compromised.
39
Architecture & Landscape
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
40
LANDSCAPE Due to the sheltered and sunny nature of much of the main garden, planting has been designed to offer a Tropical feel. Different levels define a wide space for hosting informal family gatherings and large social functions. Downstairs, the grass and exterior deck provide a seamless transition from the living room to the garden. Several existing trees were incorporated into the garden design. A minimal plant palette creates mass plantings used for large textural impact and screening for privacy.
41
Architecture & Landscape
FUNCTIONAL PLAN In the general plan, a pedestrian access was established next to the parking lot that paid homage to the scale of the house, accompanied by a marquee and a double roof made up of pergolas. The facade was projected as a landscape event that faces the street; defined by terraces where each step contains a little exotic tropical garden.

The new corridors were planned to blend the indoor and the outdoor, soft-scape and hard-scape.

DESCRIPTION Four of the social areas that make up the requirements of this home were designed so that they could be openly integrated or privatised at certain times of daily life. The kitchen, the living room, the dining room, and the television room are dynamic spaces. They can be arranged in a single space or can be independent through the manipulation of sliding doors with MDF coating, lacquered in white and with reliefs of graphic patterns similar to bar codes. The sliding panels are assembled with the furniture and the surfaces of similar finishing, granting certain material continuity, of tones and textures in all the surfaces.
46
GENERAL PLAN The access to the original apartment had: the main entrance, a reception, a hallway, a closed kitchen, the service entrance, a laundry space and a service room. In this new proposal, we decided to demolish some strategic walls in order to create a wide open plan that, when required, will be able to become more private in certain areas.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
48
GENERAL PLAN Despite Beckhoff’s design, some mutilation had to be done. The access to the original apartment had: main entrance, receipt, hallway, closed kitchen, service entrance, laundry space and service room. Almost, 25 square meters of partition walls were demolished in order to achieve a decent kitchen. The kitchen of this apartment in the lobby of the house for any of its two entrances. It is green, cabinets, drawers and handmade ceramic floor are green. A large central, white and comfortable workstation contains a fire at one end and in the middle a collective source of inspiration in the form of a beer syphon.
49
Interior Design & Home Styling
HOME STYLING The style of this apartment embraces diversity and it is reflected by mixing and matching antiques, textiles, fine arts and custom design respecting the integrity of each one. The decoration is defined by a clean eclectic aesthetic that pursues brightness, freshness and uniqueness. DESCRIPTION Arqui-Constructores is Caracas based contemporary Interior Design firm and retailer of design products that wished to open a new shop in the new and biggest mall of the city: Cerro Verde Shopping Centre. This interior design project was intended for creating a minimalist and modern design where the products of the exhibition were the protagonists: wallpapers, 3D laminates, porcelain, etc. The idea arises from the need to generate a new concept of the brand using neutral tones and clean furniture in order to exhibit in an elegant and interactive way; inviting the client to appreciate and discover the products that will be showcased.
54
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
56
GENERAL CONCEPT The intention was to generate an accessible, dynamic and comfortable atmosphere in which the client can visualise the variety of existing products and feel them before buying them. On the other hand, we have created a more private space for meetings and presentation of projects to clients and suppliers. Generally speaking, the proposal results in a clean, modern and well-distributed space that manages to give you a fresh and peaceful sensation.
57
Interior Design & Home Styling
GENERAL PLAN In this design, functionality is a priority, since it is a space of reduced dimensions, the furniture is practical, interactive and useful both for displaying and storing. Everything is distributed in a way that defines a clear axis of circulation on its right side from the access entrance to the premises to the back of the meeting room, helping to organise the space.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 | Maria Fernanda Olmos
58
FUNCTIONAL PLAN The wallpaper store is distributed as follows: access to a large rectangular room with a large observation table of catalogues and wallpaper storage bounded within the perimeter of a large artificial ‘Tensoflex’ skylight. On its left side wall, we designed the main furniture for the storage of products and catalogues. Along the right side wall, there is display furniture with sliding panels that allows placing rotating porcelain expositions and other materials. After that, there is a space for reception and customer service. At the back of the premises, we have designed a functional furniture for storage of materials, which in turn serves in its upper part as a kind of ‘platform’ where the meeting room will be located.
