“A sustainable city is a just city, a beautiful city, a creative city, a green city, a compact, polycentric city and a diverse city

The operation of an urban center, able to connect effectively with other centralities that make up the city, makes this marche correctly and smoothly, creating a better quality of life for its inhabitants. Catia, is considered a centrality in the city of Caracas. Which through a series of interventions and overrides the urban profile and uses, can be enhanced by being an area with high potential and connectivity. The idea is to integrate through the redefinition of existing tissue and use of underutilized land, the central town of Catia starring the boulevard and a new complex with multiple functions, pedestrian and vehicular flows that establish the communication and exchange between both sectors, as well as with adjacent centers.

The proposed park of about 33 hectares, is presented as an integrator ‘milestone’ in the new network of public spaces and new urbanism. From a compositional point of view, we expect to create a new sculptural form for the new Catia, able to act as an element of attraction for its inhabitants and metropolitan generate impact. The park is based on the use of land currently underutilized as industrial warehouses and informal housing. The result is a composition that is based on two hills become protagonists for its grandeur, while establishing a dialogue between them, the park and the city. One of them, defining deform and elongate the southern part of the EB Miguel Antonio Caro, creating a relief in “S” form, while the second is conical in shape and from your base, there are two paths that allow propeller arranged to climb the hill and then descend . Between the 2 elements a lower space where a new design circular lake , where the existing stream is integrated, considering it as an essential part of the proposal and defining a proposed new recreational space is defined. Thus, as the park becomes a quiet, recreation and protected from the noise and traffic .

The elements are integrated into the environment through a large hall / square that serves as a passage from Sucre Avenue and the new Park West, and vice versa, covered by a metal and polycarbonate roof trusses that keep protected and lit exhibition space open. Air bridges span the atrium at two points above interrupt the longitudinal axis and transversely connecting the galleries and halls. Public space is defined by pedestrian walkways that define the perimeter of the park and allow the connection between the museum, the new urban GREEN CATIA proposal and the existing context. Its large openings allow the museum to enjoy both far and near.

13 ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Starting from the idea to make Catia a Policentric City, the need to develop opportunities for culture and recreation at a metropolitan scale. That is the reason why I choose to generate a new proposal for expansion and integration of Jacobo Borges Museum based on the proposed strategies in the urban project CATIA GREEN. The building provides a new point of concentration of activities in the urban environment through a continuous volume through galleries that define a facade that emphasizes horizontality and transparency, and 3 huge translucid showrooms with large windows at strategic points that define from within a work of art inspired by the artist Jacobo Borges uses.

The main environmental condition is that the Pajaritos’ neighbourhood is built above the gorge, where its bed is embaulado by a concrete structure where homes , roads and common areas of the neighborhood. The infrastructure has not built the determinants of environmental and technical analysis required for buildings of this type so that this condition represents a high risk to the citizens and infrastructure. For this case study we pretend to generate sustainable solutions to housing and public space, taking into account the problems mentioned and immediate formal context .

17 ACADEMIC PROJECTS

The Pajarito’s canal, located in the Chacao’s municipality and currently busy with informal housing , is part of a set of streams that originate in the Avila mountain and crossing from north to south the northern sector of the Caracas valley before emptying into the river Guaire. Increases steady growth in recent years by the rains and cold fronts that have been developed in the country. Its channel is altered in different states from lowering unchanged in its natural course by the El Avila National Park, until it is inserted into the urban fabric. The retaining walls built by professionals are sometimes able to withstand any eventuality.

When faced with this project, we found a double opportunity. On the one hand there is the obvious need to provide the current inhabitants of the Pajaritos neighborhood adequate, safe and secure housing . On the other hand we have the opportunity to offer the city, specifically to the Los Palos Grandes zone, spaces for recreation, culture and recreación. In order to achieve that we set it in the first instance we release housing the course of the river, space that should be a protected area not only in theory, understanding why the existing zoning laws, but also in practice. Based on the above and based on previous analysis, we determine certain soft or vacant parcels in the vicinity that could be developed for the occupation of houses or public spaces linking with other existing buildings in 2 blocks currently occupied

by the neighborhood. With reference solutions from various countries regarding existing creeks or rivers in full centrality, it is decided to improve the situation generating a linear park ; a green corridor that runs along both apples and thought to be a future north-south connector in Los Palos Grandes zone, linking parks, green spaces, sports, cultural and other areas. That are scattered without connection between them , giving the sector a unique environmental infrastructure. The creative process led us to propose instead of housing on specific sites , a set that matched sequenced housing off the ground through which “reptile” piles that moves through the tree branches through space project in the same direction the quebrada. The housing project and urban promenade is reinforced by three major buil-

dings that act as nodes of attraction to the proposal, therefore Pajaritos neighborhood will become an active zone, integrating nearby urban developments. Similarly Gulch, descending from the north, the first building is a large square with cultural practices in which to cross it, the pedestrian discovers that keeps many uses for education and entertainment : galleries, screening rooms and a large theater or auditorium. Later passerby discovered a space finds a totally integrated building raised path, whose use is primarily sports advantage of the existence of a fairly crowded field for the community of Pajaritos neighborhood, reinforcing the activities carried out there. Considering that Pajaritos neighborhood broken as the linchpin of urban proposal, a number of sports and recreational pools is proposed adaptations of the

same river canal, drawing water, clean so far, from the hill Guaraira Repano. The stream is divided into several levels and forms ; thus waterfalls and variety of sensations are achieved depending of location. Following the path, we could found a spot to watch the course of the creek ; quite similar to a “beach where people can relax and interact with nature. At different points cafes and entertainment centers are located in this specific place. Along the way there are several access that permits the permeability of the park. The last building, offers an educational and cultural space in a pure forms esthetics with clear and functional spaces. The library at the end and the huge square as well, become this urban renovation at the right appetizer for those who decide to go Pajaritos Linear Park .

with a series of geometric interpretations of its plot, occupancy studies, site diagrams, photographs, etc.., where determined several fundamental aspects applicable to a new proposal for Carlota in despite of differents context. Based on this reference, urban planning and land managementdevelopstocreatenewnested, equipment and new homes public spaces as well as buildings that promote the area as a new commercial centrality, and special recreational, cultural and tourist attractions as is currently the case in the historic center of Barcelona City.

In a town the size and scale that has Caracas is essential to offer comprehensive and accessible spaces for recreation and enjoyment for its citizens, it is also essential to protect green areas for ecological and great environmental of the city. Thus the transformation of La Carlota offers a unique and necessary opportunity to assess , protect and ensure better social and sustainable future for the people of Caracas. The project arises from the need to create a new center in the city of Caracas by the urban planning area of La Carlota Air Base. The design process starts from the analysis of urban morphology Ciutat Vella in Barcelona (Spain),

maria fernanda olmos ACADEMIC PROJECTS

26

The proposal focuses on 3 main gestures. The first is to understand the city as an interconnected network of public spaces, recreational areas and green corridors ordering the city and ensure better pedestrian mobility. The second is the social and programmatic organization of public nodes in a System of Cultural Parks, La Carlota being a first catalyst in the conceptualization and implementation of these territories. Finally it is important to highlight the physical conformation of the 164 acres of La Carlota with a progressive approach that builds up over time at

certain stages, but that the proposal intends to develop only about 25% of the total area. The proposal consists of three distinct areas by the scale of the avenues of vehicular traffic, as opposed to the pedestrian streets, as well as in the case of analysis. The central zone is made up of tallest buildings and big squares, while the east and west areas are of a lower skyline, with elevated pedestrian boulevard that allows new connections with the surrounding developments and their low, parking part. New bridges over the Francisco Fajardo Highway and

Guaire river and input from the Los Ruices connect the park with the city are proposed. Finally two vehicular and publictransportnorth-southavenueswithoutinterrupting the spatial continuity on the surface, to improve mobility open. The project presented is intended to reinforce north-south connections that are deficient in the city today. The proposed uses for maintaining momentum in the new town are predominantly mixed. The East park and La Casona integrate the proposal through green pedestrian bridges, generating a large green area of great activity.

The construction of the park proposes strategies that will guide its development over time, not in final form. Structured around the natural processes and their times, from the staging and the expectation of change, park space from which change the city we have and how we relate to it rather than being a reflection of the problem is proposed existing. The main idea is to create a place that sees nature as energy and process rather than specific forms in the present, extending southward the current dynamism in the East park.

This project aims to show the potential for some type of folded forms with available resources procedure. At first I have been trying to perform experiments of analog models with a sheet of A4 paper using various techniques to generate bending supports and structures (such as the technique of triangulation). Taking into account the creation of hierarchies with different spaces and routes. The concept of this chapel of folding, ie folding, in the manner of a Chinese origami, but also deeply in fact collected, pray and generate new urban spaces. Again if we can fold the concrete , then the function for which it was designed delivers.

33 ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Folding is a creative and generative process, from abstraction, may result in the representation of figures, flat or three-dimensional, that evoke an idea or feeling in the minds of those who contemplate it . Essential in the experimentation process of architectural design for its qualities to represent the abstract, open to any adornment jewelry, figures available, infinite possibilities in the development of design objects. In architecture, specifically in the study of the folded forms is a topic widely discussed at different times that are still valued in large part because of the beauty that provides the do more with less, favored by the qualities as the ratio, order, rhythm, simplicity, regularity .

The project was based on the study of folded surfaces , attract spatialities and these in turn solve the structural part of the building. From this, the intervention of land with an existing chapel where it is proposed to replace it by a fold that generates said religious program as a series of primary and secondary programs as library, parish offices, plaza, etc. arise. The main idea in the design of a chapel for the community of San Antonio de los Altos, Edo. Miranda, was to generate a building which would stand and soon linked to a number of existing objects in the landscape: multi-family housing, educational and commercial facilities, etc. The folding of the geometric analysis and directional flows terrain where 4 points of relevance are determined 2 occupied public spaces (Roads with parking at different levels and steps), while to the north and south have 2 milestones elements, where the first known for its verticalidadpara accommodate secondary uses and the second by its horizontality to albergarun large number of people in religious acts. Both also differentiated by the characteristic shapes of the light input .

munity life. If we ask ourselves what conditions should respond to the conception of this scenario? the answer is obvious: it should suit all types of representation. Therefore, its intrinsic characteristic is versatility. This ability translates into an organization of space capable of holding various events. From this definition it is clear that the square can not be fully planned as green space and not as a sculptural space that refuses to normal use of the population. Therefore, the concept of space is redefined as a space of free appropriation, woodland, predominantly dry screed andversatileorganization, equippedtosupportephemeral activities of all kinds and sizes.

The main objective in this project is the construction of a continuous public space, by resizing the boundaries of the original square ‘Andrés Eloy Blanco’ in downtown Caracas. Although from the liberal culture, urban spaces were clarified as open spaces, from the approach that we are developing are part of collective facilities in the city. Places designed for group activities require a predominantly dry, organized and equipped apartment. The zero level is reserved for the use of the inhabitants with open spaces that connect with wooded courtyards. New programs (political party headquarters , local , gallery, etc.). Are incorporated , recognizing the different scales that appear on the site bounded by buildings of great national importance as the Central Bank of Venezuela. The object consists of a bulk part that connects to the main roads by unevenness of related platforms. A metal structure with fabric as possible plant ramps passage in response to the facades of the surrounding buildings that generate a ‘party wall’ condition of the ground is proposed.
