or somebody so very small, Lea Michele has a frankly gigantic supply of emotional strength. But as this week marks the three-month anniversary of her boyfriend Cory’s death, the actress seems to be quietly determined to use the occasion not only to celebrate the time that she spent with him, but also to focus on her future. While friends and family have formed a protective barrier around her for the last 12 weeks, Look has learnt that one person in particular has been spending more and more time with Lea. Theo Stockman, her pre-Cory ex-boyfriend, has been in constant

contact with her while she’s been in New York filming Glee. And it looks like he’s managing to help Lea look forward rather than back. “Theo got in touch with Lea as soon as he heard the news about Cory,” reveals our insider. “They’ve always been close, even after their break-up, so I imagine he wanted to do everything he could to help. After all, he knows how Lea’s mind works and how to keep her spirits up. Barely a day has gone by since Cory’s death when he hasn’t checked up on her.” The pair, who dated from 20102011, met while they were working together on the theatre production of Spring Awakening, and were actually together when Lea, 27, first met Cory on the set of Glee. But while Lea denied rumours that she and Theo broke up so she could be with her co-star, a few months later that’s just what happened. “I’d rather be in a longdistance relationship with him than not in a relationship at all,” she said of Theo, just weeks before they split. “I’m a relationship girl.” And she was keen to keep things amicable even after they went their separate ways, admitting that they would “always be friends”. “Of course, Lea is broken by Cory’s death,” explains the insider. “That isn’t going to change in the near future, and I think she’s accepted

that things will be tough for quite a long time. But Theo’s support is definitely helping her. The fact he got in contact wasn’t a surprise, but his unwavering optimism and ability to make her laugh really is helping. Lea’s emotional connection to Theo, 28, hasn’t just been developing over the phone. The actress has been filming series five of Glee in New York over the summer, and has been catching up with her Broadway-based ex in a series of Manhattan coffee shops – just around the corner from where they first met. “Theo is really understanding of everything Lea is coming to terms with,” says a friend of the actor. “He hasn’t had any serious relationships since they broke up, and he clearly still cares deeply about her. He even took a trip over to Los Angeles in September so they could spend a few days together while she was working there. I imagine Lea was really touched by that.” But despite Lea’s friends and family doing everything they can to help her stay strong, the more time that passes, the more pressure they’re under to return to day-to-day normality – something that Lea appears to be working on, too. She even tweeted a series of inspirational mantras to live by. “No matter how you feel… Get up, dress up, show up and never ever give up,” she posted last week, as the final verdict on Cory’s death broke. It confirmed that not only was his death accidental, but that – devastatingly – his recent periods of abstinence were likely to have actually contributed, as they could have reduced his tolerance to drugs and alcohol and caused the overdose. “Lea says that she’s really grateful

At the moment she’s surrounded by memories of Cory wherever she goes – whether she’s eating lunch in her trailer or wandering around on set, they’re all places they used to go together – and that’s got to be hard for her. She’s even been driving Cory’s car, so there really isn’t much opportunity for her to move on.” Lea’s friend adds: “I think Theo understands that Lea can’t move on while she’s reliving everything every day, so I imagine he’s been encouraging her to take a break and do something different. And she seems to be taking that on board. She’s even talking about taking a hiatus from acting so that she can volunteer in Peru, especially because it’s the kind of thing Cory would have loved to do. I think she’s beginning to realise that looking to the future doesn’t mean forgetting the past – it just means not dwelling on it.”

ith baby Nori’s name on a necklace and her chubby cheeks as her screensaver, there were more than a few signs Kim Kardashian may have been reluctant to leave her daughter behind and jet off to Paris with Kanye West. But friends have revealed this isn’t just any old city break for the pair – and that in between sitting on the Givenchy FROW and partying with fashion’s finest, Kim and Kanye were in France to hunt for a house and scope out wedding venues! “Kanye has been asking Kim to move to Paris with him for months,” confirms Look’s insider. “He’s spent loads of time there this year, finishing off his album Yeezus and working on his fashion line. He’s really fallen in love with the place.” Insiders say Kanye was doing all he could to keep Kim, 32, distracted from worrying about their new baby during their trip, including organising viewings for luxury

apartments in the 16th arrondissement (Paris’s version of Knightsbridge) and looking for places to get married. Kim and Kanye are renovating their new £7 million estate in LA but Kanye is still keen for them to be based in France for at least six months of the year, sources say. And it looks like Kim’s on board. “She has completely embraced the city so far, and I think she’s more or less said she will live there for some of the time. She’s also said she’ll seriously consider getting married there,” says our insider. “Kanye’s even asked her if he can just ‘book Versailles’ – after all, this will be his first wedding, so he’s determined to go all out for it.” Sources say that France’s strict regulations for photographers might be playing a big part in the couple’s decision. Even notorious paparazzihating Kanye, 36, has revealed that he feels comfortable with the French cameras on him. “I like how you guys move out here,” he told Parisian paps last week. “You’ve got total respect for yourselves [and] the people that you’re photographing.”

You may have to hold off on the hatbuying though, because although Kim is keen for a Paris base, she’s in no hurry to walk down the aisle. “Kim’s promised Kanye she’ll marry him, and that it can be as big an affair as he wants,” adds her pal. “But I think she needs a bit longer to settle into being a mum first. Kanye will wait, though. And when it does happen, it will be an amazing wedding.”

Fight Harassment By Joining Twitter’s #50stories Movement We’ve all heard obscene or threatening comments as we go about our day, but the call for it to stop just got louder

ou’ll know the feeling we’re talking about because every one of us has been there. You’re walking home alone and pass a group of men who make a comment or start walking with you. That trepidation, that fear, that threat of what could be next. Maybe it’s become the norm for you, maybe you don’t even notice anymore, or maybe you deliberately have your headphones in at all times, so you don’t have to hear it. But last week the subject of street harassment got too loud for anyone to avoid, as Twitter was set ablaze with women around the world tweeting their experiences. In just a few minutes, hundreds of women had used their 140 characters and the #50stories hashtag to describe encounters like: “Walking with my daughter on my way to a memorial service. Man took it personally I wasn’t smiling,” and “after being called an ungrateful bitch, had to explain to a harasser that I did not ask

What’s New for his ‘compliments’ or attention.” The conversation was started by Holly Kearl, 30, who works on a consultancy project with the UN but has spent her free time collating accounts from victims all around the world for a book, 50 Stories About Stopping Street Harassers. Holly, from Reston, Virginia, who also runs Stopstreetharassment.org, a website dedicated to supporting women, told Look she had no idea how much #50stories would resonate when she introduced it on Twitter. “I didn’t realise it would mean so much to women,” says Holly. “At one point #50stories was trending worldwide. We had people tweet

different countries. We have tales from the UK to Afghanistan, and from women aged 15-55,” she adds. “One of the most inspiring to me is from a woman living in Wales. She was on the train coming back from a day out with her son in Cardiff. There were some football fans hassling a group of women and saying nasty things, so she asked them to leave the women alone. Then when they turned on her, shouting abusive, sexist comments at her, she pulled the emergency stop cord. The conductor refused to help and ignored her, so when she got off at her stop she stood on the train tracks until the police arrived. Instead of arresting her, they reprimanded the conductor and carried out an investigation. She’d had enough and stood up for herself – and it paid off. As Madge instructs “strike a pose”, Tamera from Kent – one of the three girls to reach The X Factor’s live shows – obeys, throwing herself into model-perfect shapes. The teenager (she’s only 16, unbelievably) already looks like a star, minus any attitude. In hair and make-up, 17-year-old Hannah Barrett from Croydon is dabbing her eyes. “I’m always crying,” she smiles apologetically. “I can’t believe this is happening to me.” We offer a tissue, then show her the rails of clothes, which prompts a flurry of OMGs. Meanwhile, Abi Alton, 19, from Teeside, is in her element having her hair curled. The girls’ mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, picked her final three during the judges’ houses stage in Antigua last Sunday, and this Saturday the trio will brave their first live show. Hannah Barrett ‘I Was Bullied About My Weight… Now I Want To Inspire Other Girls’ You look amazing. Have you enjoyed today’s shoot? This is the biggest perk since starting The X Factor. But I’ve got really low confidence, so being next to two beautiful girls it’s like: “Urrrgggh cringe.” I’ve always been a big girl and when I went on the show I got comments on Twitter. They were saying: “She’s ugly, she’s fat, but she can sing.” It was horrible and really dented my confidence. Have you encountered abuse like that in your life before? Eddie Murphy was in a film called Norbit and his wife was a morbidly obese woman called Rasputia. I used to get called Rasputia all the time at school. I have eczema around my mouth and one girl put up pictures of me, saying: “Look at those horrible lips”. When I stuck up for myself, she tore out my hair and punched me. It was really bad and I ended up depressed. When I was 14 I stopped eating and started losing loads of weight. I went from a size 16 to an 8, but then I started comfort eating because of problems at home and went up to a size 18. I’m a size 14 now, and I still struggle with body confidence. But you’re curvaceous and beautiful, which is a great role model for girls... Yes, that’s what I’ve tried to tell myself, to get a grip. I look up to women my size like [Grammy-winning singer] Jill Scott. I came on the show to inspire young girls. I have eczema, I am bigger and I might not be the prettiest, but when you have talent there’s nothing that can stop you. Would you say The X Factor saved you? Yes, I definitely would. You moved into teenage sheltered accommodation at 16 after a rift with your mum. Are things improving? We’re talking now. She’s more supportive and more humble over my career choice. I was close to my dad, so when he passed away seven years ago and I got a new stepdad, I felt really betrayed and hurt. Will you ever move back home? No, I don’t want to. I like how I am now. Me and my mum have a better

relationship nowadays. How did your dad’s death affect you? I’m still not over it. I don’t think you ever get over a parent’s death. There are times I’ll sit in my room and have a cry. I talk to him through my music all the time. Is there a man in your life? I wish! I’m so focused on what I want to do, boys don’t even come into my head right now. A few exes got in touch when the show first aired. One said: “I want to see you.” It felt good!

I’d just finished school and thought it would be a great platform to get noticed. It’s definitely a dream come true. It’s kind of scary as well because it’s all happened so fast! What’s been your biggest pinch-me moment so far? Meeting Mary J Blige in Antigua. She’s been my idol ever since I can remember. Seeing her in the flesh was amazing. Her music’s got me through so much. She’s got a song for every single emotion. Do you have a boyfriend? Yes, he’s called Jashante and we haven’t been together very long. We’ve been friends for years though, and a few months ago he was like: “T, I really like you”. He’s 20 and a young entrepreneur – he’s so supportive. You’re 16 – do you still live at home with your parents? I live with my mum, sister Keira [11] and brother Regan [13] but I don’t know my dad. I met him on my first birthday and he left me a dress, a teddy bear and a pair of gold earrings. I never saw him again. My mum was 16 when she had me and he was young as well. He was there for the whole pregnancy, but after I was born he started to not show up. Do you want to meet him? What if he gets in touch now you’ve been on TV? I don’t think I’d want to talk to him. He had the chance to fix up his game. If he didn’t care to do that then or for the last 16 years then what’s his business coming back now? [But] I think it might happen. How will being on The X Factor and perhaps becoming a famous singer change your life? My brother and sister are mildly affected with autism so my mum cares for them. My family’s given so much to me and I want to give them something back. I’d like to buy my mum a house, I’ve promised my little baby cousin a car when he’s 17 and my little sister Keira wants a pony. My family are my motivation – I don’t just

want bags and shoes out of this! What’s your relationship like with your mentor Nicole? She’s like a big sister and hanging out with her in Antigua was amazing! She threw us a carnival the day before we performed. We were all dancing around and having fun. I’m half Saint Lucian, so it felt really good to be in the Caribbean. I wanted to kiss the ground when I got there! You were in the news after tweeting about smoking cannabis. How did you get involved with drugs? I got in with the wrong crowd. It was a bad group and I had the worst mind set. I wasn’t doing other drugs, it was just cannabis. My mum found out and was obviously disappointed, angry and urged me to stop. A few weeks later I did. It was a big mistake. I’ve really changed myself and I’m a much more positive person. You were also in the press after attacking a teenage girl… I’m not an angry person anymore and the people who know me from before will know how much I’ve changed. For the last few months, since bootcamp, I’ve been doing meditation every morning. A lot can change when you’ve got a different perspective on life. Do you worry that what’s been said about you will affect your votes on the live shows? I hope people can see past it. Both those incidents were last year and hopefully people will see how I’ve become a better person.

Abi Alton What were you doing before The X Factor? I started a uni course last September. I was studying English at Newcastle and my heart wasn’t in it, so I made the decision to leave. James Arthur’s from the same area as me and we used to play in the same places. He makes my dream seem within reach. If I had to give you one reason, it’s him. We were both chewed up about it. The relationship was going through a rough patch but we realised the solution was to work on things. It’s worth a good try before you let something go. I’m quite a determined cookie when I want to be. When else have you been utterly tenacious? hile the rest of my school friends flitted between dreams of being astronauts, princesses and – five minutes later – popstars, I’ve known since I was 10 years old exactly what I wanted to do – make clothes. And 20 years on, I’m doing exactly that with my fashion line Ukulele, which already has a celeb following, with fans including Made In Chelsea’s Millie Mackintosh and Little Mix wearing my designs. And I’ve done it all from my own bedroom. But that doesn’t mean things have happened overnight. I was born in China, but when I was 16 I moved to the UK because I wanted to travel the world and experience living in a different country. It was an incredible opportunity and two years later I started a maths degree at Manchester University. I know it sounds like a funny subject to choose when I wanted to break into the fashion industry, but I also knew I wanted to run my own business, and for that I needed to have a wide range of skills. Designing garments is just a small part of what I do. The rest of the time I’m running the business and managing finances – and that’s where my degree comes in handy. After uni, I got a job working as

a production assistant for I London – a company that specialises in supplying designs to tailors. My job was to help choose the fabrics for the clothes. As they supplied to older and professional customers, they didn’t do much with younger fashion, which is what I was excited about. After two years, I managed to convince my boss to give me a small budget to travel to China and work on some ideas to expand the business. While walking through a market there, I spotted a stretchy demin fabric that I thought could be huge in the UK and would be really popular with young women. And that’s when I came up with the idea for jeggings. I was one of the first people to do that – no one had them over here yet – so my company started providing them to retailers all over the country. When they sold more than a million pairs within the first few months, I couldn’t believe it. I was jumping up and down (in my jeggings!) and couldn’t stop screaming. That rush I’d felt from creating something for myself and seeing it become a fashion trend made me realise I wanted to launch my own line. I was so scared by the idea of going it alone, but I also wanted it more than anything. After several late nights, talking it through with my family and friends, I handed in my notice. It was terrifying, but I was also buzzing with excitement. I didn’t want to be about serious fashion and I wanted to make people smile, so I called the line Ukulele. I play the instrument and it makes me happy, so I wanted to share that feeling with my customers. I had no money to employ anyone at the beginning, so everything I did came from my bedroom. I designed the different styles, sourced the fabric and cut out all the patterns I wanted – all while sat on my bed in my small flat in London. It was tough, and there were a lot of late nights and working weekends, but I’m lucky to have a lot of friends in the same industry who could help me out in their spare time. One of them even helped me set up my own website. That meant so much to me – that even though we’re all in the same business, they were still happy to help me out. I’m also lucky to come from Shenzhen in China, which is where most of the luxury factories are. I started travelling back and forth there and met a lot of people who’ve helped me source fabrics to use on my designs. It meant that by July 2012, I was ready to put all the 16 pieces from

my first collection online. They were mostly dresses costing £75-£140. I get my inspiration from everything around me, from music to the artwork of my favourite photographer, Ryan McGinley. Even Taylor Swift inspires me! I use a lot of dolly silhouettes, lace and mesh, and I like materials that are cute, but also sexy. I combine a lot of see-through feminine fabric with body suits to keep things looking fresh, elegant and playful. As well as my website, Ukulelefashion. com, I set up a Facebook and Twitter

No one had jeggings over here, so I helped bring them to the UK! account, and I noticed people were talking about me and sharing my website. Business was starting to really take off, and then in May I was shocked to hear from Millie Mackintosh’s stylist. She said she’d seen my website and thought Millie would look great in my clothes on her blog. She ordered five pieces from my collection in the space of two months and I later saw that Millie had worn my ‘Betty’ dress to Glastonbury in June. It’s amazing! Shortly afterwards, Little Mix bought our denim jackets from the spring/ summer collection and then Diana Vickers wore my summer dress for her birthday in July. It’s crazy and I still can’t believe it. Every time I open the paper and see someone else in one of my designs, I get excited – that rush never really goes away. Things haven’t stopped in the past few months and I’ve finally moved from my bedroom into my own showroom in London and have an office in Asia, where six people work for me. I sell my clothes on my website and from November they will be available on Asos Outlet. Also, thanks to bloggers from all over the world who’ve bought online, my clothes are stocked in stores in Paris, Italy, Japan and Australia. t’s a week today!’ I announce to my captive audience, which consists of four men, all vying for my attention and firing questions at me about my big day. “He’s a lucky man,” says Daniel*, who has commandeered my flashing tiara with its attached veil. “Can I get you another drink?” offers Lee, who is removing my pink garter belt with his teeth. It’s a shame I’m getting married because I haven’t had this much attention in, well, ever. Oh, except I’m not getting married – I don’t even have a boyfriend. The tiara, the sash, the loving fiancé (‘Benjamin Marks’ – we met through friends and he proposed to me after a summer romance) is all part of my fake hen do. It was my best friend, Melissa, who first suggested it. She was listening to the radio when they started talking about an “emerging trend” of women throwing “fake hen parties” to attract men on nights out. It sounded like

a great theme for a party, and seeing as most of my girlfriends are single (I’ve been single for a year and a half), we thought: ‘Why not?’ Which is how we found ourselves a week later, along with two other friends, in an Irish bar discussing the location of my wedding and the “delicate, sweetheart neckline” of the lavender silk bridesmaids’ dresses. The hen effect was astonishing. Four of us took it in turns to be the ‘hen’ throughout the evening at different bars, but whichever one of us took the (literal) crown, men flooded to the woman of the hour wanting to talk about relationships, asking advice on how to get over their exes and how I knew my faux beau was the one. Clinical psychologist Dr Jessamy Hibberd tells me she’s not surprised by the reaction. “Being ‘unavailable’ can be appealing to men for several reasons,” she says. “It represents a challenge to some and the ‘hen’ is also

seen as desirable by others – enough to marry – which can make a person more attractive. There’s also the idea that a woman on her hen do is unlikely to want anything more than a ‘no strings attached’ encounter.” But Dr Hibberd adds that for other men – like I definitely found – the engaged woman is simply a symbol of ‘safety’. “Some men would be drawn to a woman who is so overtly unavailable to them,” she says. “They can ask questions they might normally be too afraid to ask of a potential partner. Men suffer the same doubts and insecurities as we do – they’re often just better at hiding it…” There was certainly no hiding it during my night out. I ended up talking to about 10 different men during my time as a hen, including one – Lee – who I actually liked. And there’s the problem – what if you really like someone? Do I call off my wedding? ‘Benjamin’ will be devastated…

eventeen years ago Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes acted out a Baz Luhrmann modern-day movie adaptation of the Shakespearean classic Romeo And Juliet. Now, Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes is treating us to a whole different approach with Brit actor Douglas Booth, 21, slipping into Romeo’s 15th-century clobber. That pout, those cheekbones, plus hair that would make David Beckham jealous – Douglas Booth has got the lot, so it’s no exaggeration to say that when Romeo And Juliet opens in the UK on 11 October, he’ll be topping everyone’s most-wanted lists. We’ve had our eye on him ever since he smouldered next to Emma Watson in that 2009 Burberry campaign. Born to a half-Spanish, half-Dutch mum and British dad, Douglas turned his attentions to acting when dyslexia affected his progress at school in Kent. Aged 16 and mid-GCSEs, he starred with Downton’s Maggie Smith in From Time To Time, then abandoned college plans altogether to play an ’80s Boy George in the BBC’s Worried About The Boy. Later came the part of Pip in Christmas 2011’s must-see TV drama Great Expectations, and Douglas is now rumoured to be dating on-the-up British actress Vanessa Kirby, who played Estella. The

romance allegedly caused problems on the Romeo And Juliet set between Douglas and co-star Christian Cooke (Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio). Vanessa dated Christian for three years before she met Douglas, and now the boys barely exchange hellos. Hardly ideal. But there is chemistry between Douglas and 16-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, who was just 14 when she was cast as Juliet along with Ed Westwick (who plays Juliet’s cousin Tybalt) and Damian Lewis (her father, Lord Capulet). Here, Douglas, who lives with his sister Abigail in south London, reveals all about his fears of playing such an iconic role, an embarrassing wardrobe dilemma and tears on set. When did you first encounter the story of Romeo And Juliet? I grew up with Shakespeare. But not until I sort of threw all the work into this film did I truly fall in love with his text. Since doing it, I’ve seen so many more of Shakespeare’s plays on stage and they are brilliant. Was it exciting or scary to play Romeo? A bit of both. You’re sort of terrified, but I live for challenges and this was something I hadn’t really done before – [although] I played Boy George so I’m not scared of iconic characters! But no, I think it’s definitely more excitement than fear. When did you first meet Hailee? At the Met Ball [in 2011]. We saw each

other across the ballroom, so there was some symmetry between the play and our story in that sense. What was the most challenging part of your role? The text, to start with, but once you embrace that it becomes really exciting. We don’t remember Romeo being such a sociopath… A sociopath? He’s in love, then he kills three people! He very much lives in the moment to the most extreme degrees and falls in love very quickly. He thought he was in love with Rosaline, then he sees Juliet and totally drops her. He’ll to do anything to be with Juliet. Nothing will stop him – nothing.

‘IHadGreat ChemistryWith Douglas’ Did you do a lot of training for the sword-fighting scenes? Yes, we had to get them right – those swords can really do some damage. But it was great fun. What 21-year-old wouldn’t want to run around sword fighting at the weekend? Were there any accidents? A few cut knuckles, maybe. How uncomfortable were the outfits? It was freezing cold. Hailee’s dresses, I mean, they’re not going to keep you warm. I had a bit more padding, which made it harder to go to the toilet, so it was uncomfortable in that sense! What was it like working with Paul Giamatti, who plays Friar Laurence and is soon to be in Downton Abbey? He’s one of my favourite actors. When we were filming the funeral he started crying while watching us, and when they said “cut” he just couldn’t stop. He had to go inside the church and someone had to console him. Paul invests a lot – he’s just a genius. What do your non-actor mates make of your stardom? They’ll say: “Mate, last night we went out in Leeds and got so messed up!” And I’m like: “Yeah, last night I was in New York with Hillary Clinton.” Brit actors, like Robert Pattinson, get so much adulation – are you ready for that attention? Right now that’s not what I feel like [but] the other day, I stopped in Piccadilly and sat on the Eros statue and thought: ‘One day this is going to be impossible.’ Finally, what’s the most romantic thing someone’s done for you? Oh Romeo, Romeo! Wherefor art thou Romeo? In the language of love they’re probably the most famous words ever and, let’s face it, form a question we’ve all pondered at some point in our lives. Just imagine then if your ‘Romeo’ was pillow-lipped Burberry model Douglas Booth. For Hailee Steinfeld, that’s reality as the 16-year-old actress bagged the teen dream role of Juliet. She’s admitted the kissing scenes were “awkward” because she’s never been in love but, frankly, we can’t think of anyone better to practise with. The star of 2011’s True Grit gives us the lowdown on all things Romeo And Juliet.

ON… JULIET “What I love so much about Juliet is how youthful and innocent she is, and it really was interesting exploring her emotions myself at that age. She is very strong and independent, and I think what’s beautiful about this story is that she doesn’t really know what she wants until she doesn’t have it – that’s like most of us in some situations.”

ON… SHAKESPEARE “I read the book in school around the same time we were filming the movie, so that was very convenient! I was so beyond honoured to even be considered.”

ON… JULIAN FELLOWES “Julian said this generation deserves their own Romeo and Juliet. I really think that’s true. Everybody deserves to discover and rediscover this story.”

ON… DOUGLAS “We had great chemistry and I think that was really important in order for the story to be impactful and believable.”

ON… HER COSTUMES “The only reason I would say they were uncomfortable is because they never really co-operated with the weather. They are so beautiful and, even if they are comfortable, the way they’re structured really has an impact on how you carry yourself, which is so helpful.”

ith thousands of us joining the Stoptober campaign this month – where smokers are invited to put down their cigarettes for 31 days in the hope of kicking the habit for good – many will be turning to celebrities’ and models’ favourite quitting aid, the e-cigarette. But as a study highlights some alarming aspects to the battery-powered device, are they really a good alternative? E-cigarettes, whose sales have soared 30% in the last year and boast A-list fans like Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry and Vanessa Hudgens, are designed to replicate the look and feel of normal cigarettes. They give off a vapour inhaled like smoke, but without the tar, ash, smoke and other toxins. Research by the University Of Auckland, New Zealand, found that

57% of e-cigarette users had halved the number of cigarettes smoked each day, compared with 41% of those using nicotine patches. And it was this that appealed to Kate Rune, 28, an engineer from London, who says she turned to e-cigarettes to help her stop smoking. “I hoped smoking them would help me cut back and then quit altogether,” says Kate. “But, if anything, it had the opposite effect. If I wasn’t puffing on the vapour I was lighting up a real cigarette – and in the end I was smoking more than ever.” And new concerns have now been raised about how safe the electronic devices really are, after a study in France showed they contain as many potentially cancer-causing chemicals as normal tobacco. The scientists tested 10 different rechargeable and disposable models for “carcinogenic

and toxic properties” and detected a “significant quantity of carcinogenic molecules in the vapour of these cigarettes”, which had previously gone undetected. “Most people assume e-cigarettes are much better, as they’re just delivering nicotine, which isn’t harmful,” explains Dr Martin Edwards. “But not enough is yet known about their effects, and these new studies are worrying. But the fact remains that there are hundreds of dangerous chemicals in real cigarette smoke. It’s not just the cancer risk with smoking, the big problem is heart disease – and I’m not aware that there’s a problem with the vapour from e-cigarettes. Whether it’s effective at helping people quit or not, I’m sure an e-cigarette is still going to be safer than smoking a real cigarette.”
