//guest list

A NOTABLE FASHION MODEL IN NORWAY AND THE PHILIPPINES,

Kirby Ann Basken started out as a pageant girl, but had the rare chance of representing two different countries in different beauty contests--her father’s native Norway in Miss Universe and her mother’s homeland of the Philippines in Miss Intercontinental. The twenty-something Kirby has graced the covers of both the Philippine and Norwegian versions of Cosmopolitan Magazine and has been featured in many local magazines. She has appeared on numerous FHM issues--in a feature in its Australian edition, on the cover of its Norway edition and in its Special Collector’s Edition as one of the 33 sexiest and hottest women in the world. Not content to exploit only her looks, she is currently the editor for the Miss Norway website and a columnist for online magazine topp.no. She also hosted a game show in Norway and is exploring similar opportunities in the Philippines. Kirby may have spent most of her childhood in Norway, but she was raised in an unmistakably Filipino home, which is always full of life and host to friends and noisy gatherings. It is a home run by a strong-willed mother, who pushed Kirby to strive hard and hone her potential. It was her mother’s parenting ways, different from that of the Norwegians, that made her curious enough to discover more about her homeland. She came to the Philippines to learn more about the culture and learn its language, which she now speaks fluently. She immersed herself into these after graduating from Bjørknes College in Norway with a Masters degree in Journalism. Despite the industry’s acceptance of artificial beauty, and leading a “double life,” Kirby prefers natural beauty and dismisses any thoughts of getting any sort of plastic surgery, fearful of surgical procedures offered to her to alter her face and body. Why anyone would think that a beauty naturally blessed with gifts needed those cosmetic enhancements still leaves everyone perplexed and quite amused. A certified dance addict, Kirby confesses she enjoys ballroom dancing on her down time. Her favorite dances are the hot Latin dances salsa and pachanga, as well as the famed American dances of swing and jive. Armed with all these credentials, beauty, intelligence and talents, we won’t be surprised if Kirby would be a household word in the Philippines same time, next year. Does anyone want to wager a bet?

BACOLOD

Make your way to Bacolod, an underrated destination for food, architecture, history and warm and relaxed attitude of the people. We asked three friends who call Bacolod their hometown to guide us.

Bing Javelosa-Ongsiako,

a businesswoman, whose parents and grandparents and sister still reside in Bacolod, gives us five reasons to visit Bacolod and shares her list of must-dos and must-try in the Southern city. 1. Restaurants that serve very good food at low, low prices. Not to be missed are Calea for its cakes and pastries, Aboy’s for the freshest seafood and yummiest seafood and grilled dishes, Bob’s for sate babi with java rice and grilled burgers and Kaiseki for great Japanese restaurant (possibly head to head with Makati’s Sugi!) at ridiculously low prices, Bacolod Chicken House for the best chicken inasal in the country, Pendy’s, an all around good restaurant and Bar 21 for the best batchoy in town as well as very good steaks. Food delicacy to try is the “diwal” and the scallops deadly juicy and so very fresh, must be eaten with rice! 2. Cultural background, museums, mansions, architecture of a long gone era when Negros Occidental was the sugar capital of the country, living with gentility, graciousness, excess and tight family ties. Visit the Bacolod Cathedral and the plaza, Archbishops Palace for history and architecture.

3. Cocktails, night life, a peek into living the easy, worry-free, relaxed lifestyle characteristic of Bacolod’s people. 4. Good place for golf. Marapara Golf Club and Hacienda Binitin has great views as well. 5. Check out the beaches at La kawon and Punta Bulata as well as Hinigaran Falls. Others not to be missed in Bacolod: • Showroom to see a showcase of all Negros products on display, for sale and contacts to suppliers • Totong’s, Bong Bong’s, Sugarland to get the best piaya, barquillos and other native delicacies can be found • Virgie’s for yummy gooey mango tarts • Sugar centrals for interesting educational value • Holy Week procession of families and their carriages which depict the Passion of Christ. The carriages are lit and picturesque at dusk.

//wanderlust Teddy Montelibano,

writing and editing consultant and newspaper editor who hails from Bacolod and has family ties there, suggests important landmarks to visit. 1. The Italianate-designed Ruins, the remains of the grand mansion of the Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson, which became home to his unmarried children by his first wife, a Portuguese named Maria Braga. 2. The house of Capitana Dicang Lizares is a well preserved Balay na Bato in Talisay with a modern gallery on the ground floor. 3. Check out other historical sites such as: • The Gaston heritage house (house of the man who brought sugar to Negros) called Balay Negrense in Silay • The Negros Museum in Bacolod at the back of the Capitol • The Chapel of the Angry Christ in Victorias • The old ancestral house of Jomi Gaston’s family with an antique sugar mill • The Chapel of Cartwheels within Hacienda Rosalia in Manapla • The mountain resort called Buenos Aires, a 5-hectare property at the foot of Mt. Kanlaon in Barangay llijan.

Myra Monozca,

TV executive for Nickelodeon Asia, MTV Networks International lists the best of Bacolod. 1. The annual Masskara festival, a parade of costumes and dance is the highlight for the city of Bacolod. 2. For bars/nightlife/dancing, there’s only one place to go to - MUSHU. 3. Restaurant: I never fail to visit to Felicia’s every time I’m home. They recently opened a Steak Room that serves up exquisite meals with the finest cuts, delicious! There’s also Bacolod Chicken House for inasal and spareribs. 4. Lots of food to try! There is the bangus salad at Mushu, baked salmon, steaks, and desserts at Felicia’s, and other sweet treats at Calea, and the street food everywhere. 5. For lodging, there’s L’Fisher and Sugarland Hotel. All interior and building photographs by Bung Tiaoqui. Masskara photograph by Ramon Abasolo.
