In Manila supposedly for a vacation, Charm was booked for fashion shoots left and right as soon as she landed. Everyone missed her: from photographers to makeup artists and fashion stylists. She’s still the same simple girl we had come to love, except that she speaks and writes French now. But in the midst of her rising career, Charm decided to leave Manila in June 2008, backpack across Asia for six months and eventually go to Paris. “I wanted to do something else. I wanted to learn and see new things,” she shares. By “new” things, this eventually meant traveling to exotic places like Ghana, Gabon, Kuwait and Madagascar with husband and Le Figaro economic and political writer Nathaniel Aknine.

Charm started getting bookings from editorial to commercial shoots and runway shows. She would appear in two or more fashion magazine issues on the same month, and became the face of Bonia, an A-list bag line in Indonesia; and Romyda Keth, a Cambodian couture line. That is, until Viktor Felarca of Rated F took Charm under his wing and introduced her to agents and agencies. “I remember going to my very first casting,” muses Charm. “It was for a fashion show for a teen magazine and, surprisingly, I got it.”

Gratitude is more than just a restaurant. On the ground floor of the establishment is where the dining area is located. Here, they serve food using “healthier ingredients.” In the menu, the caloric count and other information are indicated, with the objective to let people know that they can still enjoy healthy food without sacrificing the taste and flavor. They serve vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. The mezzanine is the area for workshops, seminars, meditation and life coaching. Gratitude owner Analei Atienza believes in “energy” and positivity. Hence, their main wall decors are affirmations. They also give out positive affirmations before the food is served. A giant wall of affirmation welcomes customers, and they are encouraged to write a line or two on what they are grateful for. The whole thing is about energy. When one is truly grateful, he attracts more good things in his life. And the whole experience of dining in Gratitude helps people see that there are so many things to be thankful for. Gratitude is open Monday to Saturday, 11 AM to 10:30 PM.

For fashion, music, food, art and all things passion, The Collective is the place to be.

Adarna Food and Culture

There is shopping but it is not a mall. There is a gallery, a barber shop, vinyl toys and a former Multiply online clothes store. What most malls may not have is this community of people who have their individual passions, most of which are counterculture. “It feels good to be there. The owners (of the stores) are really passionate people… It’s a hub of different passions like art, and special interests like bikes and organic food,” writes Anton Diaz, blogger of Our Awesome Planet (www.ourawesomeplanet.com).

119 Kalayaan Avenue Diliman, Quezon City, T: 9268712, 0917-9618113, E: adarnafoodandculture@ yahoo.com, W: facebook.com/adarnafoodandculture Adarna Food and Culture is a restaurant that celebrates Filipino culinary heritage by serving historical, regional and heirloom recipes in a warm, elegant and homey setting. Adarna serves a selection of dishes based on the accounts of old family cooks, descendants of families with culinary traditions and existing records.

B-Side, the bar at The Collective, was the first place to open in the former car shop warehouse area. Race car driver Gabby de la Merced collaborated with makeup artist Pia Reyes, and JJ Coccin to share their passion for art and music in Vinyl on Vinyl. Be careful not to compare The Collective to Cubao X, though; because while they may seem the same, the actual difference would be felt once you personally visit the place.

Bestsellers include Sulu Piassok, Pancit 1913, Adobong Batangas, Pancit Musiko, Bicol Express, Kaldereta Antigo, Tagalog Pochero, Pamplina, Sigarillas Salad, Dinakdakan, Chicken Relleno with Salsa Monja, and Lumpiang Freska Kabitenya among other gastronomic finds. It also offers vegan options for many of its ala carte items and can accommodate requests for special dietary needs with prior arrangements.

Some places to check out at The Collective: New Old Bikes Wabi-Sabi Wingman Sundae Ritual Vinyl on Vinyl B- Side Bar Check out the following events at B-Side: July 2: Performances by Nyco Maca, Caliph 8. Segments include DJs, Cypher with Trio, Beatmaker’s Lounge July 3: The B-Side Experiment featuring Erwin Edralin and Mulan from the School of Hard Knocks and artists from Ateneo and La Salle/CSB

The restaurant commonly uses organic ingredients. It uses no MSG, artificial seasonings or preservatives. All ingredients that can be sourced locally and from their points of origin are used. Traditional cooking methods are applied in a modern kitchen that observes strict sanitary standards to ensure that the food served is safe and clean.

The Collective 7272 Malugay Street, San Antonio, Makati City Open from 2 p.m. for stores and from 11 a.m. for restaurants from Mondays to Saturdays. How to get there: Along Buendia from Ayala Ave., go towards South Super Highway or Osmeña Ave. Turn right at Osmeña Ave and then an immediate right for Malugay street. The Collective is on the left side, next to The Linear (under construction). Follow the music!

Adarna regularly offers new dishes on its menu to celebrate the diverse culinary traditions of the country for its guests to discover and enjoy. It is open Monday to Saturday, 11:30 AM to 2 PM for lunch, 3PM to 6 PM for light meals and snacks (except Sundays) and 6 PM to 10:30 PM for dinner (on Sundays, until 9:45 PM only).

Cebu-based hard rockers Urbandub headlined Rock N’ Rogue’s maiden show last month and delivered their best performance to date—with loads of audio pyrotechnics from music spanning a distinguished 10-year career. Just a few days later, it was the turn of hardcore punk rockers Betrayed and reggae masters Tropical Depression at Fly, another high-brow live venue.

July 9 to 25: Repertory Philippines’ play EQUUS by Peter Shaffer at On Stage Greenbelt, is about Alan Strang, a seemingly normal seventeen year-old whose life appears routine. Call Ticketworld at 891-9999. July 29 to August 1: On its second year and now in a bigger venue is Manilart10, Asia’s Contemporary Art Fair, which gathers the biggest and best collection of Philippine and international art work on a four-day run. The best place to watch the much-awaited 2010 World Cup Finals match live via satellite from Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa is on giant LCD projection screens and LCD widescreen TV monitors at the Boulvar Sports Bar, Manila Pavilion Hotel. Party and open bar starts at 10 PM, Sunday, July 11 till midnight. Game starts at 2:30 AM, Monday, July 12. Minimum consumable P300 nett from midnight onwards.

In Manila supposedly for a vacation, Charm was booked for fashion shoots left and right as soon as she landed. Everyone missed her: from photographers to makeup artists and fashion stylists. She’s still the same simple girl we had come to love, except that she speaks and writes French now.

See, while the closure of these places is not at all a pleasant development, there are still plenty of other venues to book everyone for gigs.

MAKATI’S NEW CREATIVE HOTSPOT

ABS-CBN’s Balls Sports Channel TV hosts Mia Cabalfin and Marco Benitez will raffle off prizes to lucky patrons before the live telecast. Bring your own vuvuzelas. Affirmations? Not just that. They are the names of different dishes, from appetizers to main course, at the new restaurant called Gratitude. Good vibes much? Let’s proceed.

For fashion, music, food, art and all things passion, The Collective is the place to be.

Charmagne de Guzman stumbled upon modeling at the age of 17. Her plans were simple: focus on school, do a couple of jobs a month.

Charm started getting bookings from editorial to commercial shoots and runway shows. She would appear in two or more fashion magazine issues on the same month, and became the face of Bonia, an A-list bag line in Indonesia; and Romyda Keth, a Cambodian couture line.

Another positive note is Rock N’ Rogue, a monthly concert series created by JB Music and Rogue magazine, where rock bands get to play not just at posh venues like Encore (among others) but also with high definition audio equipment that make them sound ten times as good as they usually do in rock clubs with a deliberate underground feel.

The real rationale behind these things may be far less romantic than we’d like to believe. For the most part, it’s really just plain economics. Clubs do eventually close down. Where new ones open or re-open is simply where their owners think people will go. In the final analysis, it is also demand that dictates where a particular sought after performer will play.

For fashion, music, food, art and all things passion, The Collective is the place to be.

Some places to check out at The Collective: New Old Bikes Wabi-Sabi Wingman Sundae Ritual Vinyl on Vinyl B- Side Bar Check out the following events at B-Side: July 2: Performances by Nyco Maca, Caliph 8. Segments include DJs, Cypher with Trio, Beatmaker’s Lounge July 3: The B-Side Experiment featuring Erwin Edralin and Mulan from the School of Hard Knocks and artists from Ateneo and La Salle/CSB The Collective 7272 Malugay Street, San Antonio, Makati City Open from 2 p.m. for stores and from 11 a.m. for restaurants from Mondays to Saturdays. How to get there: Along Buendia from Ayala Ave., go towards South Super Highway or Osmeña Ave. Turn right at Osmeña Ave and then an immediate right for Malugay street. The Collective is on the left side, next to The Linear (under construction). Follow the music! *All photos of The Collective courtesy of Anton Diaz.

The party remains far from over for institutions like 70’s Bistro, Club Dredd and Freedom Bar. All three are still around while comparatively newer joints like Saguijo, 19 East, Handlebar Bar, Obsidian, Ten 02, Dencio’s Riverbanks Marikina, Route 196, B-Side and Grub, among other new players, are also providing healthy competition.

Gratitude is open Monday to Saturday, 11 AM to 10:30 PM.

y l g n i r i Insp rming The real rationale behind these things may be far less romantic than we’d like to believe. For the most part, it’s really just plain economics. Clubs do eventually close down. Where new ones open or re-open is simply where their owners think people will go. In the final analysis, it is also demand that dictates where a particular sought after performer will play.

So it’s safe to say that the live band scene has not seen its demise. If the respective Facebook pages of the performers and numerous venues are any indication, this is only the beginning of a new wave.
