Pucker Up with LipIce

But rumours aside, she takes her career very seriously and is proud that she’s where she’s at because of hard work and experience. The business-minded Digby writes all her music and 24/7 was lucky enough to pluck this international star out of her busy schedule for a shoot and interview. The 28-year-old Marie is even more stunning in person: fair, tall, with light eyes and dark brown hair. It is no wonder that this Catherine Zeta-Jones dead ringer was recently linked to a local heartthrob and a celebrity athlete, which generated fodder for the local showbiz tabloids. After winning a singing competition, Digby landed a recording contract with Hollywood Records, a Disney subsidiary. Her first single “Say It Again” became an astonishing success in the US and garnered many views on YouTube especially from this particular city her handlers never heard of—Makati. She told them, “I told you we have to visit the Philippines!” On the back of her popularity, she did make a promotional trip and held her first concert in the country in 2009, which led to a contract with Star Records of media giant ABS-CBN. With her busy schedule in Asia, she now splits her time between Manila, Tokyo and Los Angeles for recordings and appearances.

THE BEAUTIFUL MARIÉ (PRONOUNCED MAREE-YAY) DIGBY, famed Irish-American-Japanese singer, songwriter, musician and actress garnered worldwide fame with her acoustic cover version of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” in 2007. This video was subsequently featured on the highly-rated MTV show The Hills. It garnered millions of views worldwide on YouTube, and inspired many acoustic or rearranged covers of top hits that now dominate the airwaves. Since then, Digby has released three studio albums, including one Japanese cover album and three singles.

MARIÉ’S TOP PICKS is thankful that she has the opportunity to exercise creative control over her material in terms of songwriting and arrangements. “What I’ve learned in my career is quite a bitter pill to swallow. The more attention you get, the more negative reactions you will attract.” She has learned to take everything in stride so such obstacles will not stop her from pursuing her dreams. For this young lady, she won’t stop until she gets to the top.

Eastern Flavors in the South “Highly recommended for Southsiders: Good ol’ OMAKASE (T: 771-1443) in Casa Susana, Alabang Town Center. Their sushi rolls never fail with special mention of the American Dream (salmon/kani/cream cheese) and Jurassic Maki (ebi/kani/ebiko/salmon skin and unagi) in particular. Also worth the trip is URASHIMA (T: 825-3685) along President’s Avenue near BF Homes Paranaque. Their Bento Boxes are sure winners and a must-try. But my ultimate favorite is one of Alabang’s best-kept secrets: NISHIJIN (T: 771 7171) at the Palms Country Club. This is known for its ebi tempura, and of course for its weekend and weekday buffets. The chefs in Nishijin work non-stop so that they only prepare minimal amounts of food to be placed on the ubiquitous chafing dishes. That way, your food is always freshly prepared, as they should always be, as real good food should wait for no one.”

Ramen Heaven “Located at Tesoro Building, San Lorenzo Village, Makati, UKOKKEI RAMEN RON (T: 856 4588) has overtaken Shinjuku as my favorite place for ramen. Why do I consider this the best ramen in town? The noodles are perfectly al dente and the broth, except for the miso, is the best tasting. The menu is very simple. You can choose your soup: Shoyu (soy sauce based), Shio (salt based), or miso (which is a bit oily for my taste) and you can choose the amount of pork. In the case of Ukokkei, less is more.

StrikeThree!

Three events not to be missed this month By Janine Dario and Giancarla Espinosa Aritao

Creekside Building, Amorsolo Street corner V.A. Rufino Street (near Makati Cinema Square), Makati, T: 894-1553 With a homey atmosphere and a view of the kitchen from any of the three floors, this quaint restaurant tucked away near Japantown was a surprise discovery, but no secret to many Japanese who frequent this joint. Interesting dishes that are not found in many traditional restaurants of this cuisine include the chilled pureed okra soup, the Italian-influenced mozzarella cheese risotto and French-style shrimp rice gratin. The karaage (deep fried chicken) with three kinds of salt and fried ice cream are a must try.

Tajimaya

SM Mall of Asia, 2nd Level, North Veranda, Entertainment Mall, T: 5568929, E: info-moa@tajimaya.ph This authentic Yakiniku restaurant that started in Cebu and has expanded to Manila and Japan will surely delight those who enjoy good food and want value for money. Their promotion of P420 eat-all-you-can thinly sliced beef or chicken that you grill at your table and offer of Waguy beef has made this a popular destination. The clean and modern interiors and smokeless grill complete the experience.

“Aside from the excellent ramen, their gyoza is one of the best I’ve tasted. Very compact (siksik). It doesn’t come with sauce, so you’ll have to blend it soy sauce and vinegar. I like to add some spicy sesame oil to it.”

“You can spot a good Japanese restaurant if there are actually a lot of Japanese people eating in it. NIHONBASHITEI (T: 818-8893) along Arnaiz Ave., Pasay has been consistent at serving the freshest ingredients at very reasonable prices. My favorites are Gyoza, Unagidon, and Sukiyaki especially on a rainy day.”
