THIS MONTH, WE PAY HOMAGE TO THE queen city and premier province of the south, Cebu, represented by the beautiful 23-year old Cebuana TV celebrity, Ellen Adarna, as she graces 24/7’s cover in the aptly titled “Cebu Ce-boom!” Ellen stars in GMA-7’s long-running weekly hit comedy show “Bubble Gang”, which she joined only late last year. Although she was born to a relatively upper class family, Ellen started working in the family’s real estate and other businesses as a young student in the 4th grade and hasn’t stopped working in various jobs since. Her father brought her to their various construction sites whenever they had new projects and in fact got down and dirty herself with the digging and making hollow blocks alongside the company’s workers. The outgoing Spanish-Chinese-Filipina mestiza’s ravishing features got so much attention that she became an internet sensation overnight. Her online fame prompted TV producers to waste no time in booking flights to Cebu just to convince her to sign up for a TV career. Upcoming projects include roles in “Captain Barbel” with Richard Gutierrez and “Under de Saya” with Cesar Montano. A long career in show business and entertainment certainly awaits Cebu’s latest talented and most valuable gem.

Midnight Mercato

10:00 PM to 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays Corner of 30th Avenue and 9th Street (across the Spa at Bonifacio High Street) Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, W: www.mercatocentrale.ph and www.midnightmercato.com, E: rache@diaz.ph From the organizers of Mercato Centrale, a weekend day food and produce market, comes Midnight Mercato, the late night food bazaar which is inspired by the hawker centers of our Asian neighbors. It is in the same location as its day market. There is an airconditioned tent with vendors and tables but in the outdoor tent you will find freshly grilled and cooked street food, mostly local fare like barbecue, isaw (grilled intestines), Cebu’s sinugba, Negros’ inasal. There are a few vendors that offer crepes, handmade ravioli, tempura, persian shawarma, European sausages and takoyaki. The offerings appeal to the young partygoers of Bonifacio Global City and call center agents which comprise many of the patrons. There is free taste especially from many stalls offering homemade desserts, many from home kitchens, to delight those with a sweet tooth. Photos from the websites. Thanks to RJ Ledesma.

//menu The advent of round-the-clock offices like that of the BPO industry also known as call centers, as well as restaurants and convenience stores have created a demand for midnight food bazaars.

Its first location at Emerald Avenue, Ortigas Center was established in 2006 as a project of Ortigas Center Association and the Ortigas Center Tourism Council. Aside from the late night office workers, it also attracts residents of the condominiums and villages in the area. Here you will find home specialty food, Filipino and Asian fare, fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood, many of which are freshly cooked before the customer. Make this the summer to visit Cebu, the Queen City of the South, the birthplace of Christianity in the country, and now the regional hub of arts and craftsmanship. CEBU CITY always had this special quality where there is always something for everyone. It’s the kind of place where random adventures turn into great memories, and the obvious attractions like going to the beach or eating the best lechon you’ve ever had, still leave you with the sense of wanting to come back. Even if you’ve been here before, there is always something new or old, that is definitely worth exploring.

assortment of fresh seafood, barbecue and other delicious local favorites, called a beach basket which you can order from Kaona Grill [T: (032) 343-9994 or 95]. Dive and see the fish sanctuary at Nalusuan or head out to Pandanon island for a swim. After a full day of being under the sun and under the sea, your first island-hopping experience will make you want to do it over and over again.

Sinulog Festival

This is one of the best activities you can do in Cebu because of the accessibility of different islands. Rent a pumpboat for a day from Mactan and hop from one nearby island to another. Have a kinamot meal (eaten with hands) in the middle of the ocean with pusô (rice cooked in coconut leaves weaved into a diamond shape similar to the heart) and an

Cebuanos and other devotees come together annually on the third Sunday of January to pay tribute to the miraculous Santo Niño de Cebu. The parade runs through the main streets of Cebu and is celebrated through dance, elaborate costumes, and incredibly detailed floats. With the loud drum beats pounding against your heart, Cebu turns into one big street party!

Quite similar to Manila’s Divisoria, this market located at the downtown area of the city, is without a doubt another world. You will literally find everything that you need at the most ridiculously cheapest prices. Whether you need freshly made chorizo, or that very special ukay dress hidden under a pile of clothes, or spotting that shop that specifically makes vintage stove oven tops that your grandmother used to bake her famous spare ribs. It’s got all that, even more than you can put in one paragraph. Generations of families have built their lives in this area that will probably be passed on to even more generations. Even just standing in the middle of this organized chaos, is being able to understand, that is where it all started, that is real old school Cebu.

Zipline Going for a scenic drive up to the mountains of Balamban, maybe you’d want to find a shady place for a nice picnic or even just stop by for some freshly picked maiz (corn). But if you’re in the mood for a little adventure, ziplining at K33 is something worth trying! Even if you’re afraid of heights, the rush of the rapelling from one point to another with the beautiful view around you, leaves you feeling proud that you were able to take that giant leap!

Night Life Having a night out is always essential in any place you visit. If you’re up for it, you can easily go from the beach to the mountains in just one day. If you feel like enjoying a drink with a breathtaking view of city lights, bring your own drinks and head up to places like Tops or Mountain View. Never seem to get old even for the Cebuanos. If you feel like drinking by the sea, Tiki Bar at the Bigfoot Film School in Mactan is a place to check out. With that comforting smell of the ocean air and a cold beer on hand, you suddenly realize that there is no place you would rather be, than here in Cebu. The author is a Cebu-born and raised massage therapist that has been trained in Bangkok, Thailand but now manages the restaurant Kaona Grill. She hopes to open her own spa one day.
