By Martina Gabrielle Dario PENSHOPPE, ONE OF THE TOP LOCAL brands in the country, has outdone itself again. With the launch of their Spring/Summer 2011 line at Philippine Fashion Week last October, the retail giant’s newest collection of clothes did not fail to impress, with the travel lifestyle as the source of inspiration. The Arrivalist, a line that takes cues from the French culture and all its finesse and grace, captures the essence of making a high-impact entrance in a tasteful manner. For PENSHOPPE, this issue’s cover girl Bea Soriano was the perfect fit. Being passionate about travel herself, her countless trips abroad gave her a deeper appreciation for other cultures. She goes beyond stylish as she’s recently developed an interest in many aspects of fashion business and even the less

glamorous side--production. She sees her current work in the family corporation as a stepping stone to reaching her dream of setting up her own fashion business. PENSHOPPE was Bea’s first endorsement deal and since then, her list of achievements has been getting a lot of mileage. PENSHOPPE took the road less traveled in promoting The Arrivalist line by creating a short film instead of the standard commercial. Critically acclaimed director Cholo Hidalgo Laurel was the man for the job, shooting the dramatic scenes at the National Museum and Paco Park some of the country’s most historic locations to stimulate old world charm and timeless elegance. With the coming of The Arrivalist line into the consciousness of Philippine fashion, we’re pretty sure that whatever’s next on PENSHOPPE’s itinerary will be an enjoyable journey. Très chic!

the dance clubs REPUBLIQ

ago, humongous caverns and warehouses then started mushrooming all over town and called themselves clubs only to close down faster than you can say “unceremoniously.”

MANOR

2/F, Resorts World, Newport Mall, Pasay City: A bigger sister of Embassy, in fact, with twice the real estate to shake your booty in. It’s Manila’s current rage according to the city’s tens of thousands of vampires. If dancing’s not your thing, then you can always hop next door to the sparklingly new and massive Resorts World Casino where the gambling and foreign-inspired shows will temptingly suck your wallet dry.

ENCORE

The Fort, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig: The original big club when it was known as Embassy until several untoward incidents forced it to be born again as Encore. When Embassy opened its doors more than 5 years

Eastwood City, Quezon City: From the same group that gave life to Embassy and Republiq, this club is a mini Encore located in the call center hub of Quezon City. This place is usually packed with residents of the surrounding northern communities and frequented by nightlife denizens who want a welcome change from the usual Makati/Fort Bonifacio scene. Best place to go to if you’ve got creditors hounding you or paparazzi staking out the more popular nightspots down south.

CLUB BUREAU

A Venue, Makati Avenue, Makati: Right smack dab in the middle of Makati’s famed red light district is this mid sized club. You might want to check this place out if you want to avoid the crush of LV and Hermes-toting ladies at the other better-known dance halls. Parking is definitely not a problem here; they’ve got hundreds for you to choose from. The big bonus is that you can always take a walk down the street and savor the sights of the more “exotic” and varied nightlife in the district before calling it a night.

manic mondays Mondays suddenly got very exciting with the launch of Manic Mondays at L’Incontro with Italian lounge music, wide spaces and a relaxing ambiance, 50% on orders of pizza and pasta all day, free select cocktails from 5 to 7PM, free valet, parking and wifi. Complimentary cocktails include: white and red wine sangrias, peach bellinis, Limoncello spritzer and Espresso martinis. Or even...make your own cocktail! The best things in life are free. L’Incontro Italian Ristorante 207 Nicanor Garcia St. (formerly Reposo St.), Makati, Philippines, T: 899-0638 to 39 or 899-0642.

Mall of Asia, Pasay City: The Philippine branch of the popular Los Angeles club, it has one of the best views in the city, the world-famous Manila Bay. Makes us wonder why there aren’t any more of these bay side clubs nowadays. The most famous discos of the 70’s to 80’s were all situated along Roxas (aka Dewey) Boulevard: Stargazer, Queue, Louie Y’s, On, and we’re not even mentioning the dozens of ubiquitous casinos and racy nightclubs that ran the length of the 7 kilometer boulevard from the 50’s until Martial Law authorities shut them down in 1972. Although the strip clubs made a comeback in the mid 70’s, maybe a bay side revival should be in order? Hotel Intercontinental Manila, Ayala Center, Makati: Rising out of the ashes of Manila’s legendary discotheques Where Else and Euphoria, this venue has the best sounding address like its high flying predecessors, 1 Ayala Avenue. Now who can beat that? It’s the only club with a 5-star hotel’s swimming pool right outside where you can drown your sorrows if you’re partner turns out to be a date from hell or if the DJ doesn’t make you pirouette like MJ or Justin Timberlake.

CHRISTMAS DOES NOT ALL HAVE TO BE waste and partying without a conscience. WWF-Philippines shows us how to be green minded this holiday season.

These are desperate environmental times, and a big holiday bash can produce a serious amount of waste. Keeping the environment in mind will seriously reduce your party’s carbon footprint. Enjoy your party more knowing that you are minimizing ecological impact with these seven simple green party tips. 1. PLAN AHEAD. Knowing how many people to expect and agreeing on a theme is the first step in cutting down on waste. It saves you from rushing to the store and buying unnecessary items that eventually end up in the trash bin or closet. 2. GET TECHIE WITH ECO-INVITES. To minimize carbon emissions, why not email the invites and make use of text messaging? These are more hip and up-to-date as well – definitely better than sending over a messenger with a printed invite. For easy RSVP, followup with a call to make it more personal. 3. DECORATE WITH EARTH IN MIND. Holiday parties normally have one-time use decorations. If this is true for your small get-togethers, how about flowers and foliage to make it more sustainable instead of going for the usual plastic and foil trimmings? Poinsettias and pine cones make for a more festive and homey atmosphere.

4. RECYCLE WHAT YOU HAVE. For bigger celebrations, bring out past decors and leftover trimmings and make use of them. In need of refreshing? A little glitter and gold paint can go a long way. Also, why not gather everybody who can donate a few things for the party? This allows everybody to participate as well and spread the Christmas cheer. 5. PAPER PLATE VS. CHINA. Of course, avoiding the use of paper plates and plastic cups and cutlery is always preferable. But when it cannot be helped, look for products that are biodegradable. Remember, the goal is to avoid reckless consumption and having these materials end up in landfills. 6. GREEN PARTY FAVORS. Think of prizes from eco-friendly or sustainable stores instead of the usual corporate giveaways. Consider green travel packages as a big door prize. What better way to appreciate the environment than up close and personal? 7. PROPER CLEAN-UP. Make sure that there are bins and trash bags that are clearly marked with the right labels for proper disposal. Try forming a green ‘police team’ and announce to everyone that this is an earth-friendly Christmas party where their cooperation is needed.

Remember, all party animals have a duty to their environment. Make sure this is a message that comes across to your guests to get them onboard as well. By implementing these simple tips, we lessen our impacts on the planet. Learn more about how you can contribute to the environment. Visit WWF-Philippines at www.wwf.org.ph.

For PENSHOPPE, this issue’s cover girl Bea Soriano was the perfect fit. Being passionate about travel herself, her countless trips abroad gave her a deeper appreciation for other cultures. She goes beyond stylish as she’s recently developed an interest in many aspects of fashion business and even the less PENSHOPPE, ONE OF THE TOP LOCAL brands in the country, has outdone itself again.

Très chic!

It’s the only club with a 5-star hotel’s swimming pool right outside where you can drown your sorrows if you’re partner turns out to be a date from hell or if the DJ doesn’t make you pirouette like MJ or Justin Timberlake.

of watering holes or wormholes but a pretty good sampling of what kind of nightlife this raving mad city can offer. So go ahead, paint the town red and make your friends green with envy!

A Venue, Makati Avenue, Makati: Right smack dab in the middle of Makati’s famed red light district is this mid sized club. You might want to check this place out if you want to avoid the crush of LV and Hermes-toting ladies at the other better-known dance halls. Parking is definitely not a problem here; they’ve got hundreds for you to choose from. The big bonus is that you can always take a walk down the street and savor the sights of the more “exotic” and varied nightlife in the district before calling it a night.

ago, humongous caverns and warehouses then started mushrooming all over town and called themselves clubs only to close down faster than you can say “unceremoniously.”

Green Christmas

i’m dreaming of a

//logbook

Nov. 20 to 21: 12 hours of shopping madness is expected at Espirit de Noel Bazaar, from 10:30 AM to 10:30PM, at the cavernous A-Venue Events Hall, Makati Ave., Makati. Visit http://www.espritdenoelbazaar. com or e-mail bazaarista.group@ gmail.com.

2. GET TECHIE WITH ECO-INVITES. To minimize carbon emissions, why not email the invites and make use of text messaging? These are more hip and up-to-date as well – definitely better than sending over a messenger with a printed invite. For easy RSVP, followup with a call to make it more personal.

Nov. 21: Bring your own tote or shopping bags at the eco-friendly 2010 International Bazaar, on its 44th year, from 9AM to 7PM, at the PICC Forum, CCP Complex in Pasay City. The fund raising bazaar which benefits Philippine Christian Foundation, Handicap International Philippines, the Rizal Medical Center, and the Association for the Rights of Children in Southeast Asia, among others will showcase local entrepreneurs and the items sold by each Embassy. Aside from the finest products from around the world, there will also be special raffle prizes awarded to lucky winners. Tickets to the International Bazaar are priced at P100 and can be bought at the IBF office, 6th floor, 2330 Department of Foreign Affairs Building, Roxas Blvd, Pasay City, 8331320, Tesoro’s branches in Makati, Alabang and Ermita, and at the gate. For more information, email ibf.dfa@gmail. com.

Nov. 24 to 29 and Dec. 18 to 23: Noel Discovery Bazaar at the World Trade Center World Trade Center, Metro Manila Christmas Shop Expo. Call 687-0654, 687-7523 or email noelbazaars@gmail.com.
