Rendering letter forms and creating creatures as a child while growing up in sunny California, provided me with hours of entertainment and joy. During my duration in the military, a pen and paper were my outlet of choice to escape the daily life of a submariner. Now my life revolves around branding and logotypes. In my opinion art has a way of changing every aspect of life.

TIM BURTON

Course Portfolio Building Instructor Sean Bacon Typefaces Trade Gothic LT Std

Task A collection of Tim Burton’s early cinematographic work is commissioned to be made into a DVD boxed set. Illustrations for the individual movies along with the packaging and DVD menu user interface will need to be created.

Strategy Individual movie covers were illustrated in a minimalist manner. The color scheme varied from cover to cover to match the feel of the movie it represents; Illustrations are basic and relevant to movie subject as well. “Trade Gothic” is the typeface used to identify the pertinent information for each movie, its clean condensed forms allowed the focus to be on the illustrations. The typeface “Trade Gothic” is used as the menu user interface; navigation and legibility are able to be read from across the room. The color scheme used in the DVD menu user interface takes the multiple forms of color blindness into consideration by separating colors that may blend together.

BIO TECH

Course Graphic Design Instructor Candice LĂľpez Typefaces Agenda

Task Bionuclie, a biotech company is starting up in the Carlsbad area and requires a corporate identity. Four key brand requirements must be followed when creating Bionuclie’s corporate identity: differentiation, relevance, coherence and esteem.

Strategy The logo needed to be conservative and reflect an ecoconscious look to connect with shareholders and the community. The font Agenda was selected for its wide stems and round shapes that communicate a friendly and approachable environment. The cool blue and green color scheme mimics nature and cleanliness as well as relating to life and biotechnology. A mass to mole converter application was created for Bionuclie employees to use on mobile devices and desktop computers when making DNA or RNA calculations.

LE BOUTON

Course Portfolio Building Instructor Candice LĂľpez Typefaces Rivanna / Nouveau FLF

Task Lebouton, a veganic plant nutrient line requires branding and packaging (veganic meaning no animal byproducts were used in the production of the product). The entire user experience needs to be fluid and informative, from start to finish.

Strategy Work was started by researching the plant nutrient business and outlining what is expected of every plant nutrient product in the current market. The information presented by Le Bouton’s printed and digital user interface covers what is needed for the novice grower and is in-depth enough for the professional grower. A wordmark was created to represent Lebouton and a natural green color scheme was selected to echo the natural process that is used in the production of Le Bouton.

SAN GIOVANNI

Course Portfolio Building Instructor Candice Lõpez Typefaces Knockout / AR Berkley / Scala Sans / P22 Cezanne Pro

Task Radicondoli is having their annual festival, “Festa di San Giovanni” and it requires marketing and promotional materials. Festa di San Giovanni is a historic and religious celebration that needs to bridge to the younger generations.

Strategy A set of three different style prints were created which depicted scenes of the festival while each print is consistent with the same color scheme. The limited palette is used to appeal to the younger generation; athletic cloth is branded with the same imagery as the prints to unify the marketing.

PLAYGROUND DAYZE

Course Typography Instructor Amy Becraft Typefaces Segoe Print

Task BZ Books, a children’s book publishing company requires illustrated book covers for “playground Dayze”. A third grade reading level chapter book series “Playground Dayze”, requires a book cover which is still unique while keeping a uniformity within the book series. Strategy Illustrations where started with pen and ink on paper and transferred to Photoshop for color and composition. The subject matter of the covers was limited to numbers, letters and world monuments. The color scheme is very basic using one background color with two object hi-light colors. The characters illustrated are comedic in nature to be appealing to the target audience of 7-10 year of age.

ARISTO HOTEL

Course Graphic Design Instructor Candice L천pez Typefaces Aviano Didone

Task Aristo, a high end Hotel in New York requires branding. The main goal with Aristo is to create a regal experience. Branding must be subdued to preserve the ambiance of excellence..

Strategy The Manhattan Municipal Building in New York City on the intersection of Chambers Street and Centre Street was selected to be repackaged into a luxurious hotel. There is a British undertone to the interior design with a modern touch. The Emblem created is combination of a modern crown that mimics the Aviano typeface along with the word Aristo in the Avino typeface. By using a uniform thin to thick set of lines a sleek and lasting identity is created for Aristo.

DIABLO SKIN

Course Graphic Design Instructor Lisa Starace Typefaces Diablo Rune / Helvetica

Task Diablo 4, the latest installment from the Diablo franchise is being released for the PlayStation 4 and a limited edition version is needed for the super fan. Diablo 4 must integrate with the PlayStation 4 by using there current system structure and providing the fan base with the ability to customize. Strategy A custom font, “Diablo Rune” was the first thing made. The Diablo font was inspired by ancient runes in it’s design. A 11’ vinyl sculpture of Diablo was created to be released simultaneously with the release of the Diablo 4 video game. Custom PlayStation 4 console covers illustrating Diablo, with custom blood stained PlayStation 4 controllers, PlayStation 4 vita’s, a strategy guide and game disk packaging were also included for collectors. An auction house application for mobile devices was created to supply players world wide with item buying and selling on the move. The ability to have a auction house on a mobile device increases the user experience and also works as a reminder to continue playing Diablo 4.

ALEXANDER CALDER

Course Travel by Design Instructor Sean Bacon Typefaces Calder Wire / Arial

Task There will be an exhibition at the San Diego Museum of art to commemorate the life work of Alexander Calder. The event will need to be advertised and marketed to the surrounding region.

Strategy The Calder exhibit was expected to draw a wide target audience of people in the San Diego community. Different strategies were taken to communicate with the various target markets. To capture a wide market the exhibit was advertised on pandora.com and youtube.com. Magazine articles are commissioned to raise awareness on Alexander Calder and the current exhibition. Street adversing was commissioned to bring awareness to the local community. A custom font “Calder Wire� is created to unify all aspects of the art exhibition advertising efforts.

CHARACTER CONCEPT

Course Portfolio Building Instructor Sean Bacon Typefaces Gill Sans

Task A personal character concept book and online portfolio are needed to allow for interviews with companies focusing on character design and concept art.

Strategy The book is combination of my curated illustrations I have worked for the past 3 years. Text and color are omitted to allow the viewer to really focus in on the content and illustrations themselves. The user experience of viewing my digital portfolio is easy to use and quick way to continue communication.
